Financial Markets
tunnilla kaikkien on osaallisttutava ryhmäesitelmään. Ryhmän tehtävä on valita pörssissä
oleva yhtiö ja esitellä tämä luokalle. Kerran viikossa yksi ryhmä pitää
esitelmänsä, ja koska olin kiinalais-saksalaisen kanssa ainoat vaihto-oppilaat,
meillä ei aluksi ollut ryhmää. Opettaja kumminkin löysi meille ryhmän ja
kerroin ryhmän johtajalle, että olisi parempi jos hän valitsee jonkun maailmalla
tunnetun yhtiön, sillä muuten minulla olisi vaikeuksia etsiä tietoa
kiinalaisesta yhtiöstä. Koska olimme seitsemäs ryhmä vuorossa pitää esitelmä,
meillä olisi ollut todella paljon aikaa valmistua, mutta niin ei kyllä
toimita kiinalaisryhmän kanssa.
Viikon ennen kun meidän
oli tarkoitus pitää esitys, en ollut ryhmän johtajalta kuullut mitään, joten aloin
lähetellä hänelle viestejä. Lopulta sain selville, että yhtiö josta teemme
esityksen on Hollantilainen DSM, josta en aikaisemmin ollut kuullut mitään.
Ainakaan ei mikään kiinalainen yhtiö. Ryhmä, joka piti esityksen viikkoa meitä
aikaisemmin, teki sen niin huonosti opettajan mukaan, että heidän piti pitää esitelmä uusiksi. Tämähän johti siihen, että meidän esitystilaisuus siirtyi
viikolla eteenpäin. Tämä kylläkään ei saanut ryhmääni tekemään mitään
nopeammin, vaan kaksi päivää ennen kun meidän piti pitää esitys, sain ryhmän
johtajalta valmiin PP-esitelmän. Hän sanoi minulle, että voinhan esittää kaikki
yrityksen rahoitus asiat. Tietenkin sanoin voivani tehdä sen, ennen kun
huomasin, että minulla oli kuusi sivua esiteltävänä kun ryhmän viidellä muulla
jäsenellä on vain kaksi sivua per henkilö.
Siinä minä sitten kirosin
ryhmääni saksalaiselle, joka valitti kun oli saanut vaan yhden sivun, jossa oli
vain pari riviä tekstiä. Koska minulla oli vain päivä etsiä yhtiön rahoitusta
koskevaa tietoa, ajattelin jo jättää kaiken tekemättä, vaan jotta ryhmäni ei
pääsisi esitelmästä läpi. Osioni oli ryhmän tärkein ja pisin, joten siksi he varmaan pistivät sen minulle, koska hei eivät halunnut puhua niin paljon englanniksi. Lopulta kävin PP-osioni läpi edellisenä iltana ja
huomasin, että minulla olikin vielä yksi sivu lisää esitettävänä. Onneksi
kumminkin tein osani, sillä opettaja kehui minun esitelmääni lopulta hyväksi. Myös
kiinalaiset ryhmässäni tuli kiittämään minua jälkeenpäin.
Esityksen jälkeen
yleisö sai esittää kysymyksiä, ja tietenkin suurin osa halusi kysyy minulta
jotain kuten esim. miksi osinkojen hinta
on nousussa? Enhän minä mitään yhtiöstä muuta tiennyt kun sen mitä olin
kertonut, joten onneksi kiinalaiset vastasivat puolestani. Muutenkaan en loppupuolella
paljon kuunnellut kun ryhmäni alkoi vastamaan kiinaksi ja opettajakin antoi
suurimman osan palautteesta kiinaksi. Esityksen jälkeen minusta taisi tulla osa
”luokkaa”, sillä yksi pojista tuli kysymään jos haluan pelata shakkia. Olihan
se ihan kivaa, mutta heti alussa tiesin jo häviäväni, sillä en nyt mitään kiinalaista
shakissa voi voittaa. Meidän pelatessa ympärillämme oli noin kymmenen oppilasta
seuraamassa pelin kulkua. Onneksi peli oli melko tasainen joten kauheasti ei
tarvitse häviötä hävetä :D

In my Financial Markets class everybody had
to be part of a group that would present a company to the rest of the class. Since
I and the Chinese-German guy are the only exchange students in that class we
were put into a group with some Chinese boys. We were group number seven and
there was only one presentation per week so we would have had lots of time to prepare
for the presentation, but no. Not with a Chinese group. Already in the
beginning I told the group leader to choose an International company and not a
Chinese, so that it would be easier for me to look up information about it. The
group leader told me he would inform me when they had decided on which company
to present.
All the groups that presented before us
were bluntly said terrible. All the group members always red their text
straight from paper and the rest of the group would usually be texting or doing
something else on their phone. Some PP-presentations were so badly made that
you couldn’t see anything since there was too much text or it was otherwise
just messy. For example in one PP they showed the balance sheet. To “underline”
what he was talking about he started circling or underlining numbers on the
computer, so in the end you couldn’t see the actual numbers anymore.
One week before we should have presented I
was informed that the company we would present is DSM. I had never heard about
it before, since it was a Dutch-based
multinational life sciences and materials sciences company. The group
before us had such a bad presentation according to the teacher so she gave them
a second chance to prepare it again. This meant that our presentation was pushed
forward with a week. After not hearing anything from my group during the next
week I started sending messages to the group leader asking when we would start
working on the presentation. He always just replied that he is too busy and he
will let me know later. We were supposed to have the presentation on Friday and
on Wednesday eve he sent me the PP-file with a finished presentation. I had
thought that we would work on it together but apparently I was wrong.
The group leader also told me that I should
present the whole financial part. I thought it would be ok, until I realized
that my part was six slides and the rest of the groups’ five members only had
two slides each. Also my part was the hardest since I only had numbers to
explain, no text, just a balance sheet, financial statements and share prices
etc. This meant that I had one day to go through all the numbers so I would be
able to explain them to the class. I also realized late on Thursday eve that I
had one more slide that I hadn’t looked at before. In the end I was so mad at
my group that I told one of them that if I mess up my part, which was the most
important, the whole group would fail.
But luckily I didn’t do that. My part went
fine and my group members even came and thanked me afterwards. After the presentation
part was finished the class could ask us questions. Since I didn’t know
anything else about the company than the numbers I had talked about some of the
boys had to answer questions given to me such as “why is the stock price rising”.
But in the end it was the Chinese who had made the presentation so of course
they had a better view of the company than I had. Since the teacher gave most
of the feedback in Chinese I only understood “great work” and nothing else. But
it seemed like the teacher had liked my part the most, which was a great
feeling since I didn’t think I had had enough time to prepare my part. During
the break I seemed to have become a part of the class since one of the Chinese
students came and asked if I wanted to play chess. It was great fun to play
with a Chinese, but I already knew I would never beat a Chinese guy in chess.
The game was still pretty even and we had about ten students around us
following the game. Really intense :D
