Makeup Academy Palette

Shanghaissa kesäalennuksien aikana ostin aivan loistavan meikkisetin Sephoran liikkeestä. En ollut suunnitellut ostavani tätä settiä, mutta koska myyjä nyt kehu sitä sen verran paljon ja kertoi, että edellispäivä asiakas oli ostanut seitsemän kappaletta, niin olihan pakko itsekin ostaa. Pakkaus oli kai seitsemänkymmen- prosentin alennuksessa ja maksoi noin kolmekymmentä euroa. Ostaessa jopa vain yhden Sephoran luomivärin, joutuu maksamaan yli kymmenen euroa, joten eihän hinta ole edes verrattavissa kun setistä löytyi yhteensä 130 väriä. Paletti on jaettu kolmeen eri osaan, josta suurimmassa on 72 eri luomiväriä. Vasemmalla on yksi pohjustusväri, 18 eye-lineria, 7 poskipunaa ja 3 peiteväriä. Oikealla on myös yksi pohjustusväri ja 28 huuliväriä ja kiiltoa. Keskikonsolin avatessa esiin tulee peili. Toisin sanoen tämä on varmasti kannattavin ja paras tekemäni meikki ostos ikinä. Melkein jo harmittaa, etten ostanut toisen kappaleen.

During the summer sales in Shanghai I found this great makeup palette at Sephoras. I wasn’t planning on buying anything like this, but the sales person insisted it was a great deal after letting me know that a women had bought seven of there the day before. To get a hold of this deal I paid something around 260rmb, which meant that it was on sale for up to seventy percent. When buying one eye shadow at Sephoras it costs about 100 rmb, compared to the palette with 130 shades foe eyes, face and lips! The central panel has 72 waterproof eye shadows, in other words I will never get bored with this one. The left hand side has one primer, 18 cream eyeliners, 7 cream and powder blushes and 3 concealers. The right hand side also has a colorless primer and 28 lip colors. The set comes complete with some small brushes but the sales person also gave some more, which was nice. When opening the palettes middle part a mirror can be found. After getting this one there won’t be any make up in the future that can compare to the awesomeness of this one! 

I Love Me -messut

Äitini oli voittanut Ellen arvonnassa kaksi pääsylippua I Love Me –messuille, jotka ovat toisin sanoen jokavuotiset kauneus, terveys ja muoti messut, jotka pidetään messukeskuksessa. Saimme siellä vietettyä huimat viisi tuntia kierrellen ja katsellen mitä oli tarjolla. Kävimme mm. hiuspohjan analyysissä, jossa selvisi jonkin verran hiuspohjani laadusta ja miten sitä hoitaa. Paras osuus oli kyllä puolentunnin kestävät meikkaus ja hius –kurssit, jotka serkkuni järjesti messuilla. Päivän aikana pystyi valitsemaan yhden viidestä eri ilmaiskokeilukurssista, johon osallistua, mutta mikäli paikat eivät olleet täyttyneet sai osallistua muihinkin. Menimme ensiksi oppimaan miten tehdään smoky eyes look. Kaksitoista henkeä sai tehdä meikkauksen itse omien pöytien ääressä, kun muu messu-yleisö pystyi seuraamaan sivusta. Kun nyt kerran itse sai tehdä, samalla kun meitä opastettiin, päätin kokeilla jotain värikkäämpää lookia, enkä päätynyt normaaliin ruskeaan tai mustaan, vaan otin kirkkaan sinisen päävärikseni. Väri toimi hyvin, ohjeet olivat selvät ja lopputulos loistava. Parin tunnin jälkeen kävimme seuraavalle oppitunnille, jossa opimme tupeeraamaan oikeaoppisesti. Tämäkin homma meni ihan hyvin ja jatkossa sitten itse osaa kun kerran on saanut seurata ammattilaista sivusta.

My mother won two tickets for the I Love Me –fair. Last weekend we went there and spent almost five hours by just walking around the different sections that included beauty, health, fashion and fitness. The fair is held every year and I have been there a couple of times before. This time there were a lot of great brands and products to see and test. The best part of the fair was the beauty school lessons held by my cousin that we attended. On the first one we learnt how to do a smoky eyes look. Instead of trying out the basic brown or black styles I went for the blue color and the end result was great. Twelve lucky ones were able to attend each lesson and do the makeup their selves as my cousin was giving directions from the stage on how to do it. People who couldn’t attend the class themselves were able to follow the process around the stage. The second class we attended taught us on how to put volume in our hair styles. The instructions were simple, but the amount of products used was and stages to take is a bit overwhelming to do on your own. In the end it was great to follow a professional and go it on your own.

Chopping board that also rinse? This is what first caught my eye back in Shanghai

Shanghaissa kävin Japanilaisessa tavaratalossa, josta löysin ensimmäistä kertaa Joseph Josephin tuotteita. Leikkuulauta, jonka saa muutettua siiviläksi, oli sen verran hyvä keksintö, että pakko sarjaa alkaa seurata. Aloin googlettaa, mistä näitä tuotteita saa ja netistähän niitä löytyykin, jos ei kaupasta halpaa löydy. Onnekseni Hullut Päivät tulivat, ja löysin sieltä kaksi Joseph Joseph tuotetta, jotka ovat halvempia Stockalla kun mitä ne olivat netti-sivuilla. Voisin huomauttaa, että sarjan yksi leikkuulauta oli kymmenen euroa kalliimpi hulluila päivillä, kun mitä se muualla olisi. Päädyin siis ostamaan kuusiosaisen keittiövälinesetin. Settiin kuuluu erilaisia lastoja ja kauhoja. Varteen on lisätty pidike, joka takaa ettei kauhaosa kosketa työtasoon. Tarkoitus on, että sekä kauha että työtaso pysyy hygieenisinä. Setti maksoi hulluila se kolmekymmentä euroa, kun taas ostaessa erikseen vain yhden, hinta on jo yli kymmenen euroa. Toisena päivänä menin vielä hakemaan Chop 2 pot –taittuvan leikkuulaudan. Eli ei niin hyvä kuin Shanghaissa näkemäni, mutta kyllä tälläkin kelpaa leikata sienet ja vihannekset ja sitten kipata kaikki paistinpannuun, ilman että puolet valuu ohi pannun. Ostokset sain melko rauhassa tehtyä keskellä päivää Itiksessä, kun ei siellä onnekseni paljon ihmisiä ollut.

During my time in Shanghai, I visited a Japanese apartment store where I first stumbled on the Joseph Joseph kitchenware series. I looked at a chopping board that was formed so that it could be folded and food can be rinsed without having to switch to another bowl. I just found this so genius that I started looking up all the products Joseph Joseph had. Luckily I found some of the series products from Hullut Päivät, or the crazy shopping days that one of the apartment stores have twice a year. During the five day sales I went first and bought a six-part utensils gift box set. The series includes turners, skimmers, spoons and others. The handle is weighted, which means that head is always raised when put onto the work surfaces. This will minimize mess and now we got a hygienic solution! On the third day of the sales I bought a Chop 2 pot shopping board. What is so great about this is that the chopping board’s sides can be folded up by squeezing the handle. This means that next time I chop some vegetables or mushrooms they won’t fall all over the place, instead they are neatly guided into the pan. There are still a few items that I’m looking at that would be so useful when cooking. 

Fat Girl Slim -tuotteet

Kiinassa ollessani treenasin melko paljon, mutta kesän aikana salilla kävin todella harvoin. Alkaessani taas Suomessa käymään salilla päätin kokeilla vähän lisäapua kiinteytymisessä ja ostin Bliss –spasarjan Fat Girl Slim tuotteita. Löysin Body Scrub tuotteen Kicksin alennuspöydältä puoleen hintaan. Myyjältä tiedustelin, että voiko tuotetta käyttää yksin, vai pitäisikö jotain muutakin käyttää. Myyjä näytti minulle sarjan kaikki tuotteet ja päädyin ostamaan myös kiinteyttävän päivä voiteen. Tuotteet lupaavat, että ongelmakohdat kiinteytyvät, mutta tuotetta pitäisi käyttää päivittäin, jotain mitä minä en ole tehnyt. Tuotteet ovat kumminkin saaneet paljon kehuja internetissä, joten uskon niiden vaikuttavan. Kalliitahan nämä ovat, mutta mikäli ne oikeasti toimivat liikunnan ja oikean ruokavalion ohella jää vielä nähtäväksi.

I had been on the lazier side of exercising when I got back to Finland. I needed some extra boost for my effort to tone my muscles so I bought some products from the Bliss Fat Girl Slim series. I found the body scrub from the sales section (probably because the package was damaged) and asked the sales person in case I needed some other products. She insured me that only by using a firming day cream, could I get the best result, so I bought that one also. Fat Girl Slim promises what the name says, meaning problem places will get toned. To get the best result I should have been using this daily, but I’m not the type that remembers this, so I have just occasionally applied the product. It was pretty pricy, but comments found on the internet say that it’s the real deal and really works. If this is true, I still need to find out by myself. 

Maalattu paikalliseen tapaan

Ollessani ryhmämatkalla Fengjingissä amerikkalaisten opiskelijoiden kanssa kävimme kylässä, joka oli tunnettu Peasant painting maalaustyylistään. Paikan päällä saimme itsekin kokeilla maalaamista, yhdessä paikallisen taiteilijan kanssa. Meille kaikille annettiin paperi, johon valmiiksi oli piirretty lyijykynällä hahmot. Meillä oli mallina valmis taulu, mutta monet tekivät kuvasta oman version. Itse pidättelin aika samoissa väri maailmassa kun alkuperäisessä maalauksessa, mutta jotkut vaikeammat yksityiskohdat jätin tekemättä. Parilla eurolla valmis kuva kehystettiin, mikä mielestäni teki siitä paremman näköisen. Maalaaminen oli todella helppoa ja kuvat ja aiheet olivat simppeleitä, mutta värit ovat sen verran kirkkaat, että ne ainakin minun mielestä ovat kiinnostavia. Paikan päältä sai tauluja ostaa, ja vaikka monet olivat todella kiinnostavia tai muuten vain värikkäitä, niin päädyin panda-tauluun. Taulu maksoi jotain viidestä kymmeneen euroa. Peasant painting on sen verran simppeliä puuhaa, että otin joistain hienommista maalauksista kuvia, joita voin sitten käyttää malleina jos joskus jaksan mennä ostamaan sellaista maaliväriä, jotka sopivat kuvien tekoon.

When I did a daytrip to Fengjing together with some American students, we also visited a village nearby known for their unique style of painting. Peasant painting incorporates simple motives about the local life and most paintings are brightly colored. I was drawn by the simplicity but still detailed work, and we were able to make a painting ourselves.  A local artist had made the base for us so we only needed to paint, not draw the characters. We had a finished picture to us as guidance, but most people did another version. I tried to follow the original one as much as possible, but I left out some more detailed work from the umbrellas. Painting was easy and in the end I paid some 20rmb to get a frame to my picture. The house we painted at had lots of finished paintings on the wall made by the artist and her husband. I ended up buying one with pandas on it. There were lots of nice paintings that I took pictures of, and when I get the paint I need, I will be able to make some more paintings on my own. 

Papercutting

Kiinan kulttuuri tunneilla opimme leikkaamaan paperista kuvioita, jotain jota kiinalaiset harrastavat etenkin uuden vuoden aikaan. Monessa paikka olin nähnyt hienoja paperikuvioita, jotka olivat joko kehystetty tai sitten ne kiinnitettiin ikkunaan. Itse asiassa en monella kiinalaisella nähnyt paperista leikattuja kuvia kotonaan, vaikka ne vaikuttavat olevan suosittuja. Ensimmäiset ostin Hangzhoussa ollessani ilta-markkinoilta. Illaksi pystytetystä kojusta löysin sekä hienon panda-aiheisen kuvan että suuremman kuvan, jossa oli riikinkukkoja. Hinta ei ollut mikään halvin riikinkukkojen kohdalla, mutta tykkäsin kuvasta sen verran, että oli pakko sekin ostaa. Kuvilla olisi ollut kehykset, mutta ostin ne ilman niitä, sillä kuljetus olisi ollut hankalaa. Toisen kerran, kun paperikuvia kävin ostamassa, oli Pekingissä ollessani. Pekingin oopperan jälkeen käväisin hotellin lahjatavara kaupasta ostamassa kaksi pinkistä paperista leikattua pandaa, joista yksi nostaa painoja ja toinen heittää seivästä. Vaikka pandoilla ei ollut mitään tekemistä oopperan kanssa, niin ne olivat sen verran hauskan näköiset, että halusin nekin omakseni. En toisin ole saanut kehystettyä näitä kuvia vielä.

During my Chinese Culture class we were taught about Chinese traditional paper cutting. We were also given the chance to try it during class. Paper cutting is especially important during Spring Festival, but to be honest I haven’t seen any being used by locals. Shops use to have both pictures in frames as well as those that are meant to be put up in windows. The first ones I bought in Hangzhou at the night market. I was drawn to the stand by a big picture of two peacocks. The price was a bit high, but since I didn’t take the frame I got it cheaper. I also ended up getting pandas gut from paper and I was impressed by both of the pictures detailed work and framed them back in Finland. I also got two pictures when I visited Beijing. After the Beijing opera act I bought two panda pictures from the gift shop. One was lifting weights and the other throwing a spear. The bright pink color and the funny characters has yet to be framed before I can put them up on display. 

Väliaika

Kiirettä on ollut syksyn aikana, ja blogin säännöllinen ylläpitäminen  on ollut haasteellista. Syy tähän on ollut, ettei ole tullut mieleen mistä kirjoittaa, kun ei Kiinassa enää ole. Suomessa taas ei tapahdu mitään erikoista, tai ei ainakaan mitään sellaista, josta blogissa kirjoittaa. Tavoitteena olisi päästä ensi vuoden puolella takasin Kiinaan tehdäkseni työharjoittelun siellä. Harjoittelupaikan löytäminen ei ole helppoa, ja mistään en ole vielä saanut vastausta. Heti kun vain paikka löytyisi, pääsisin aloittamaan viisumihakemus-prosessin ja sen jälkeen lentoliput voisi hankkia. Toinen hankala prosessi on saada kiinalaiselle poikaystävälle viisumi Suomeen. Koska syy matkaan ei ole loma, vaan vierailu, viisumin haussa pitää todistaa kenelle on lähdössä, mistä toisemme tunnemme ja paljonko rahaa pankista löytyy ym. Vaikka hakemuksen mukaisesti tein kutsu kirjeen, jäljellä on vielä todistettava, että oikeasti tunnemme toisemme. Se tehdään nähtävästi sillä, että poikaystävän pitäisi viedä kuvia minusta konsulaattiin, mikä vaikuttaa oudolta. Vaikka hänenkin viisuminhaku-prosessi on ollut hankala, vaikuttaa siltä, että se selviäisi pikku hiljaa. Blogin puolesta minulla ei paljon ole jäljellä Shanghaissa kokemistani asioista ja paikoista. Toisin sanoen lisäilen tänne muuta, ei niin paljon kiinaan liittyen, kunnes pääsen taas takaisin Shanghaihin!

I haven’t been too inspired lately to write in my blog. The reasons are that I have been busy with school and work, but also because there isn’t much to write about when I’m currently back in Helsinki. The plan is that I want to go back to Shanghai in the beginning of next year to complete my internship. I have applied for some places, but no answer had been given, so I’m struggling to find a place for the moment. As I said, I don’t have too much left to write about things that happened in China, so I will post something in the future about what I’m up to back home, even though it isn’t as exiting as what I wrote about in Shanghai.

Kiinalainen ruoka on outoa, mutta ei aina huonolla tavalla. Ruoka kiinassa ei ole samanlaista kun mitä se länsimaalaisista kiina-ravintoloista löytää. Kiinalaisten tapa ruokaillakin on niin oma-alueensa, että kirjoitan siitä ehkä joskus toiste. Ehkä oudoimmat ruoat, joita tiedän itse, mitä ne olivat, oli ankan kurkkua ja nivel-pala. Vaikka se ei miltään namilta näyttänyt, se ei myöskään ollut pahaa, vaan ainoastaan vaikeaa syödä, kun lihaa oli niin vähän ja luuta niin paljon. Kalaakin myytiin monessa paikkaa, mutta välttelin sitä paljon, sillä esim. kalanpäätä ei pois heitetä ja luita on niin vaikea erotella. Toisaalla söin Xianin kaupungissa todella hyvää kalaa. Kyllä sitten lopulta osasin jo syömäpuikoilla ne luut poistaa. Moni kysy, tuliko koiraa tai käärmettä kokeiltua, ja vastaus on ei. Käärmettä ei ollut tarjolla siellä missä kävin, ja koiraa taas en halunnutkaan kokeilla. Omasta mielestäni koiraa olisi löytänyt koulun lähellä olevasta ravintolalasta, mutta monet kiinalaiset kiistivät tämän, kysyessäni, jos sitä löytyy Shanghaista.

Ruokakaupat olivat melko samoja, kuin mitä muista maista löytyy, mutta valikoima oli erilainen. Ruoka-öljyä löytyi satoja ja riisiä pystyi ostamaan kiloittain. Kala ja liha osastot kiersin, sillä haju oli niin paha, mutta olisi ollut jännä mennä katsomaan mitä outoja kaloja sieltä löytyy. Esim. kilpikonnat ovat suurta herkkua kiinassa. Hedelmät ostin katu-kaupoista, sillä supermarkettien hinnat olivat kalliimpia. Valikoima oli laaja ja sain kokeiltua paljon uusia hedelmiä.

Food in China is weird, but not always in a bad way. It isn’t anything like the Chinese food you get in restaurants in Western countries. The behavior of Chinese people during dinner is completely another chapter that I might take up in another blog post, so let’s get back to the food. Some of the weirder things I tried out were a throat piece and a knee part of a duck. It wasn’t disgusting, even though it didn’t look like something I wanted to try, but on the other hand it was just meat, that was hard to eat, as there was mostly just bone. Most fish were prepared whole so the head and bones weren’t removed. Even though this bothered me a lot I still had some of the best fish in the city of Xian. Most people ask if I tried snake or dog, but no, there wasn’t any chance to try those kinds of things. I’m pretty sure that they sold dog meat in one of the places, but most people I asked told me no dog could be found in the nearby district. Dogs are pets for most people, to make it clear to some people :)

Food stores and supermarkets were the same is many other countries, but only the selection varied. There whole aisles with only cooking oil and rice could be bought by kilo. The meat and fish selection where parts of the store that I tried not to enter as the smell was bad, but they had some weird stuff there that I should have gone exploring and seeing what it was. Most of the time I bought my fruit from the street shops as the fruit in supermarkets was expensive. My boyfriend used to buy me fruit and I got to try lots of new ones I don’t even know the name of.

Ei niin tyypillinen kuva kauppareissustani, kun lapsi ajaa ohi mini-autollaan. Näitä autoja satuin näkemään ehkä kolmisen kappaletta, josta tämä yksi tuli vastaan kaupassa, ja kaksi ajeli puistossa. Lapsi varmaankin luulee ohjaavansa autoa, mutta itse asiassa vanhemmat tulevat perässä kaukosäädin kädessä. Eli varmasti koko perheellä on hauskaa kun lapsi pääsee ajamaan, ja vanhemmat saavat ohjata lapsen autoa minne sattuu.

This wasn’t my typical shopping experience, when a toddler drove past me inside a clothing store. I had seen a couple of these small cars before, but they had been outside. The toddlers probably believes that they his driving the car, but in fact their parents are right behind steering the mini-sized car with a control. I have seen shops selling these cars, so I assume they can’t be that expensive. But at least they seem like fun for the whole family and more high-tech than a regular stroller.

Ajattelin vielä lisätä tänne blogiin vähän kuvia koulustani ja kampusalueesta. Alue oli suuri ja rakennuksia sen verran paljon, että vasta loppu puolella tiesin mihin rakennukset oli tarkoitettu. Luokka-rakennuksia oli kuusi eripuolilla kampusta, joista kaksi oli aivan hotellini vieressä. Yhdessä rakennuksessa oli pieni ruokakauppa, mehubaari, liittymäkauppa, kirjakauppa ja kopiointikauppa. Myös kampusalueen toisessa päässä oli samantapainen ruokakauppa ja länsimaalainen 7/11 tapainen kauppa avattiin toisen lukukauden alettua. Kahden ruokalan lisäksi paikalla oli yksi länsimaalinen ravintola ja kiinalainen ravintola hotellin alakerrassa. Mehubaareja oli vähän kaikkialla ja juuri talviloman jälkeen paljon uusia paikkoja avattiin. Kampuksella oli paljon urheiluun liittyviä paikkoja, kuten suuri kisahalli, jossa oli kuntosali, ja miekkailusali. Lisäksi paikalla oli kolmessa paikkaa isot koripallo kentät, kahdessa paikkaa tenniskentät, pesisharjoituspaikka, juoksurata ja jalkapallokenttä. Koululla oli myös oma terveysasema, jossa kävin pari kertaa. Kirjastoja oli kaksi, josta yksi oli enemmän tarkoitettu opiskeluun, ei niinkään kirjojen lukemiseen. Yhdessä rakennuksessa pidettiin juhlatilaisuuksia ja toisessa oli auditorio, jossa avajaispuheet pidettiin. Toisin sanoen rakennuksia oli alueella noin kaksikymmentä kun myös opettajien työrakennus ja oppilaiden asuntolat lasketaan mukaan. Muutenkin kampusalue oli todella mukava. Nurmikoita ja ns. puistomaisia alueita oli paljon, ja alueet pidettiin siisteinä ja viihtyisinä.

Even though last time I was at school was three or four months ago I still wanted to post some pictures taken at campus. The campus sight was large and there were about twenty buildings. I knew what all the buildings were for only after spending a year there. There were about seven all around campus and two of them were right next to the hotel I stayed in. There were lots of places to buy food and the one closest to the hotel was s small convenience store located together with other shops such as a bookstore, coffee shop, print shop etc. Another small food store was located on the other side of campus nearer to the Chinese students’ dorms. Also a small Family Mart was opened during the second semester with more western style food such as salads. Additionally there were two canteens and one western styled restaurant with pizza and one Chinese styled located on the first floor of the hotel. Lots of places were for sports and other activities such as a large gym building and a fencing hall. There were also three basketball courts, four tennis fields, football field, running track and baseball training ground. The school even had their own healthcare and I visited the building a couple of times. The campus had one library and one place where students could study. In one building the opening ceremony was held in the auditory and in another the Christmas party. The teachers had also their own building which had moved from one building to another during the holidays. 

Urban Planning Exhibition Center

Olin jo kauan sitten suunnitellut meneväni UPEC katsomaan Shanghain pienoismallia, mutta museo oli maanantaisin suljettu, joten kävin sinä päivänä kansallismuseossa. Museo sijaitsee Peoples’ Squarillä, ja sen lähistöllä on monia muita suuria museoita. En alun perin tiennyt museosta muuta kuin, että siellä on suuri pienoismalli Shanghain keskustasta. Pienoismalli oli kohokohta, sillä se peitti kokonaisen kerroksen. Pienoismallin ympäri pystyi kävelemään ja nähdä myös rakennuksia, joita on suunniteltu tulvaisuudessa rakennettavan. Muuten museo ei ollut mikään kiinnostavin paikka ja paljon alueita oli esillä, jonne uusia rakennuksia oli suunniteltu. Museo oli myös omistettu Shanghain historialle ja sen muutoksille, eli esillä oli vanhoja kuvia uusien vieressä, jotta näkisi miten kaupunki on muuttunut.

The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center was the museum I had intended to go to previously, but as it is closed on Mondays I ended up going to the National Museum on the other side of the road. The Urban Planning Hall is located on the Peoples’ Park area and has a great view from the top floors. The high point of the museum is the large scale model of the city center of Shanghai. It displays some future buildings that are planned to be built. You can walk around the model that covers the whole third floor. The museum wasn’t otherwise that exciting. There were some nice pictures showcasing some major landmarks and what they looked like back in the days as well as some newer pictures of the same place. Most of the exhibits were related to Shanghai’s history and other planned developments.

Shanghaissa ollessani tuli paljon erilaisia ruoka-annoksia kokeiltua. Ajattelin tässä näyttää kuvia ja samalla näyttää miten paljon erilaisia ruokia, ja miten paljon muut maat ovat vaikuttaneet siihen, mitä ruokaa kaupungin ravintoloista löytyy. Kiinalaista ruoka söin useimmiten koulun lähistöllä, kadulta tai ruokalasta. Paistettu riisi oli suosikkini, ja söin sitä eri lisukkeiden kanssa usein. Ruokakadulla minulla oli selvät suosikki paikat ja ns. turvaruokaa, jonka tiesin aina olevan hyvää. Menin siis useasti samoihin paikkoihin missä olin jo aikaisemmin hyvää ruokaa saanut, vaikka usein yritin käydä uusissa paikoissa. Alussa tilasin pitsaa kadun ravintolasta, mutta loppupuolella en sieltä enää mitään tilannut, vaan kävin toisesta paikkaa hakemassa pihvipurilaisen. Minulla oli suosikki paikka mistä hain aina friteerattuja ruokia tikuilla. Näissäkin yritin kokeilla uusia tikkuja, mutta enimmäkseen päädyin aina samoihin. Lähistöllä oli myös länsimaalaisia ravintoloita, kun Bao Long ostoskeskus oli avattu. Sieltä löytyi mm. Pizza Hut, KFC ja italialainen paikka, jossa kävin joka viikko.

Muuten kävin länsimaalaisissa ravintoloissa enimmäkseen ollessani keskustassa, sillä sieltä harvemmin löytyi halpaa ja hyvää paikallista ruokaa. Länsimaalaisia paikkoja oli kaikkialla, suurin osa amerikkalaisia pizza tai hampurilaispaikkoja tai sitten ranskalaisia. Länsimaalainen ruoka oli kylläkin kalliimpaa, mutta välillä ei jaksanut syödä vain kiinalaista. Muutin loppupuolella Chuansha alueelle, josta löytyi paljon ketjuravintoloita ja esim. McDonalds. Koulussa käydessäni hain usein ruokaa mukaani huoneeseen, mutta joskus kävin myös isomman porukan kanssa ulkona syömässä. Usein tuli käytyä illalla syömässä ulkona pystytettyihin telttoihin. Teltan ulkopuolella kokki valmisti ruoan, mutta usein meidän pöytään tuli niin ihmeellisen näköisiä annoksia, että paljon ei tullut syötyä. Ei ruoassa usein ollut mitään vikaa, vaan tapa, jolla niitä syötiin, oli niin erikoinen, että monesti jätin väliin simpukat, josta mehut imettiin, ja kalat ja lihat, jossa oli vielä luun palasia. Pitää vielä mainita, että kaikkihan sylkivät luunpalaset ja sen sellaiset suoraan pöydälle, tai maahan, ollessamme ulkona.

I have tried lots of different kinds of food during my time in Shanghai, so I decided to do a post about some of the food that I tried there.  This post will showcase how much variety can be found in a city with a long history with western countries such as France. Most of the time, I ate Chinese food that I bought from the street vendors or from the canteen at school. When I visited the city I usually went for western food, since I never found really cheap local food in the center. Western food in Caolu, where I stayed for the longest period of time, was limited to only a few places such as Pizza Hut and an Italian restaurant I visited almost every week. Pizza could also be bought from one of the locals at the food street and it was brought to the hotel I stayed in for no extra charges. Even though I got stuck and only ate some dishes I knew were good for a while, I still managed to try new things when eating with a bigger group or with somebody who ordered for me.

Most days when I ate alone I brought the food with me to my room. Lots of people want take-away, so it was easy and convenient. On the food street I had one place with deep fired, one with spaghetti, one with hamburgers, one with rice dishes and one with noodles. I tried other places a couple of times, but never had the urge to go back to them like I did with the places named above. When the Bao Long shopping mall was opened I had more western food places nearby such as KFC and Pizza Hut. In the end when I moved to Chuansha for a while, I had a McDonalds and other Western restaurants nearby.

Sometimes I met up with friends and went out to eat to one of the many tents that are brought up in the evening when people get home from work. You tell the chef what you want and the food is prepared outside on a grill. Most of the time they ordered some weird stuff such as some kind of mussels, meat and fish with bones and other things I didn’t dare eating. On the other hand I went some occasions where other people paid the bill, which meant I could try lots of dishes I wouldn’t try on my own. In the evening a lot of places set up tables and chairs on the pavement and grilled or cooked the food on sight. In these places I ate mostly chicken and mushrooms when grilled or cabbage and broccoli when cooked. One of the weirdest dishes I liked the most was corn with sugar made into a kind of pancake with sweet mayonnaise on it.
