Avoiding the Kitchen

Almost nothing has changed since I’ve last been in Shanghai, except for the fact that I haven’t bought any food that I have to cook by myself. This means that I haven’t visited Metro, City shop and other ridiculously expensive foreign food stores. I do have some pesto and other import products in the cupboard, but I’m quite sure they will be left untouched. I even brought a 1kg cheese from Finland that I haven’t opened. In the past cheese was used in so many dishes that I started bringing cheese from Finland instead of buying it here from a store, but now there hasn’t been any pizza or other cheesy dishes.

Why I haven’t made any food is because of two reasons. One is that it is easy to eat outside or then our uncle makes the food. The second is that I dislike the kitchen quite a lot. In the past making dinner was quite a headache. The kitchen is not really that dirty, but from a western viewpoint it is somewhat disgusting. This is because the family might leave uncooked meat like chicken on the table, or have fish that are still alive in the sink. I’m also afraid of the gas stove, since it is unstable and unreliable. On top of this we don’t have any hot or even warm water, except for in the shower, that I could use to wash the dishes with. This means that I feel that most cups and plates and all other kitchen ware isn’t as clean as I would like it to be. This and some more reasons make me avoid the kitchen for now.

Koen, että mikään ei oikeastaan ole muuttunut elämässäni, kun se asia, että en ole laittanut kertaakaan ruokaa Shanghaissa ollessani. Hyvä puoli on se, että samalla ei ole tarvinnut käydä super kalliissa ulkomaisissa ruokakaupoissa. Olin valmistunut tekemään ruokaa Kiinassa, joten toin Suomesta juustoa ja leipomistarvikkeita, mutta niihin en ole koskenutkaan. Ennen vanhaan minulla kului sen verran paljon juustoa tehdessäni ruokaa, että oli pakko tuoda Suomesta kun Kiinan hinnat ovat sen verran korkeat.

Syy, miksi en ole laittanut ruokaa, taita olla ensinnäkin se, että täällä on helppoa ja halpaa syödä ulkona. Jos ulkona ei jaksa käydä, niin kotona on melkein joka päivä isäpuolen tekemää ruokaa. Toiseksi syyksi voisi syyttää keittiötä. Aina kuin laitoin ruokaa, hermostuin jostain. Oli se sitten siisteyden puute, ongelmat hellan kanssa tai sitten piiloon laitetut tarvikkeet tai roskiin heitetyt tuotteet. Hygieniasta täällä ei taida olla mitään tietoa, sillä raakaa kanaa voi pistää suoraan keittiön pöydälle ja eläviä kaloja pitää tiskialtaassa. Lisäksi meillä ei ole ollenkaan kuumaa vettä, oikeastaan voisin sanoa, että hanasta tulee vain kylmää vettä vuoden ajasta riippumatta, ja tämän takia tiskiä ei aina saa niin puhtaaksi kun itse haluisi. Tästä, ja monesta muista syistä olen siis vältellyt keittiötä, jossa nyt on ainoastaan tullut käytyä hakemassa juomavettä.

One of my favorite food in China are dishes from Yunnan. The flavor is great and they look much more appealing that most other food in China. I’m always on a hunt to find a cheap Yunnan restaurant; so far I have only tried three restaurants: Lost Heaven, Beyond the Clouds and the newest Legend Taste in Jing’an. Lost Heaven is without doubt the best, but as it is the most expensive one, it is quite hard to visit it many times. The two other ones are quite reasonably priced. I need to buy a Yunnan cooking book, so that I could make the dishes by myself in the future.

Tällä hetkellä yksi lempiruoistani Kiinassa on Yunnanin maakunnasta peräisin oleva ruoka. Ruoat maustetaan juuri minun makuuni sopiviksi ja ruoat myös näyttävät paljon kivemmilta kuin miltä Kiinassa muuten usein on. Olen tähän saakka käynyt kolmessa eri ravintolassa; yhdessä kalliissa ja kahdessa halvemmassa. Aion jatkossakin etsiä halpoja Yunnan ravintoloita, sillä niiden ruokaan ei koskaan pety, vaikka mitä listalta tilaisikaan. Voisipa jossain vaiheessa ostaa reseptikirja, jotta saisin itsekin alkaa näitä annoksia valmistamaan. 

No Break from Bread

I was told that bread is bad for me and I was supposed to try to live without it in China. However, me being without bread lasted for one and a half day and then I had to give into it. Not the carving of the bread, but for the simplicity. I have over the years taught my Chinese parents-in-law that western people eat bread, and of course they buy bread for me to have for breakfast. Also, when there is no other food that I fancy to eat as a snack outside, I will go for some bread. The bread has either gotten better since last time I was in China, or then I’ve just gotten used to the somewhat sweet taste. Getting rid of white flour would be even more impossible, as almost all staple food, except for rice, is made of it in China.

Sain tietää, että minun pitäisi jättää leipä kokonaan pois. Ajattelin, että voisin kokeilla Kiinassa olla ilman leipää. Tämä "tauko" kesti vain puolitoista päivää, ja sitten sorruin. En siihen, että leipä olisi mahdottoman hyvää, vaan siihen, että sitä on niin helppo syödä. Muutenkin, kiinalaiset appivanhemmat ovat tottuneet siihen, että syön leipää, joten he olivat jo valmiiksi ostaneet minulle paljon paahtoleipää aamupalaksi. Pakkohan sitä loppujen lopuksi on syödä, ja kiinassa on muutenkin niin helppo ostaa leipää näistä leipomoista, joita löytyy yllättävän paljon kaikkialta. Olen itsekin huomannut, että leipä ei maistu niin pahalle tai oudolle, kun se ennen maistui, mutta tämä voi johtua siitä, että olen tottunut heidän makeahkoon leipään tai ehkä he ovat viimeinkin saaneet käsiinsä eurooppalaiset ohjeet. 

Spending time in Suzhou

Samassa ostoskeskuksessa kirjakaupan kanssa oli paljon ravintoloita, kappoja ja kahviloita. Koko ostoskeskus miellytti minua paljon enemmän kuin yksikään Shanghain ostareista tai tavarataloista. Paikka oli siis jotenkin niin epäkiinalainen, melkein ranskalaistyylinen. Kävimme syömässä lounaan kiinalaisravintolassa, jossa söimme kalaa, vihanneksia curry kastikkeessa, lihaa riisikuorilla ja perunoita. Viereisestä kahvilasta tuli myös kahdesti ostettua kaksi erikoista teetä. Ensimmäisenä kokeilin valkosuklaa-sakura teetä, ja toisena kertana vadelmaa ja oolongia. Kävimme myös vähän ulkona kävelemässä, sekä viereisissä ostoskeskuksessa kurkkaamassa. Ihme kyllä vastaan tuli kauppa, jossa myytiin Muumi-tuotteita! Suzhou on kyllä designin suhteen Shanghaista paljon edellä jossain merkityksissä.

In the same mall with the bookstore, we visited some other shops, cafes and restaurants. The mall overall was really nice, better than anywhere else in Shanghai, as it was more westernized. We ate lunch at a Chinese place, enjoying some vegetable curry, potatoes, fish, and meat wrapped in rice covers. I also bought twice some tea with interesting tastes such as white-chocolate sakura tea and peach-raspberry oolong tea. We did go outside as well and walk along the lake. We also stopped by some other malls nearby. 

From Jingan to Peoples Square

Kävimme viime viikolla CCn kanssa keskustassa ihan vain muuten vaan viettämässä päivää. Otimme metron Jingan temppelille. Olen aikaisemmin halunnut käydä Jinganin puistossa, mutta siellä tuli käytyä ensimäistä kertaa vasta nyt. Puisto on suhteellisen pieni, mutta paljon hienoja patsaita ja värikkäitä kukkia teki siitä mielenkiintoisen. Puistokävelyn jälkeen suuntasimme kohti French Concessions aluetta, jossa kävelimme pitkin katuja, joilla en kovin usein aikaisemmin ole käynyt. Alkoi olemaan jo lounasaika, ja onneksi kiinalainen nuudelipaikka oli niin täynnä, että jatkoimme matkaan, sillä vastaan tuli Saksalaisen suosittelema vietnamilainen pikkuravintola. Saksalainen halusi viedä minut sinne syömään, mutta paikka oli kiinni viimeksi. Ravintolassa on tilaa alle kymmenelle hengelle, mutta onneksi heillä oli yksi pöytä ulkopuolella. Istuimme siis ihanassa kevät auringossa syömässä alueeseen verrattuna melko halpaa vietnamilaista riisiä ja nuudelia, sekä kupillinen inkivääriteetä.

Kävelimme K11 ostoskeskukseen asti, jossa en ollut aikaisemmin käynyt. Vaikka paikka näyttää erittäin kalliilta, niin kuin se onkin, niin löysimme paljon nähtävää. Aulassa oli paljon kukkia ja lintuhäkkejä, jossa papukaijat ja muut linnut istuivat laulamassa. Löysimme myös ravintolan, jolla oli oma kasvimaa sisällä. Jäimme odottamaan CCn ystävää Baker and Spice kahvilassa, jossa söimme palaset kakkua. Ystävän saavuttua, lähdimme yhdessä ostamaan samanlaisen Oneplus X puhelimen, joka CCllä jo on, hänen äidilleen. Olisimme samalla ostaneet kolmannen kännykän, mutta Euroopalla on oma versionsa, joten se pitää sitten netistä tilata. Kävelimme siis Jingan temppelin metrolta aina Peoples Squarille asti, ja matka ei tuntunut pitkältä, sillä matkalla oli aina jotain nähtävää. Vaikka sää oli loistava sinä päivänä, ilma taisi ollakin melko epäpuhdas, sillä saimme molemmat kurkut kipeiksi.

Last week we went to the city center to just wander around. We took the metro to Jingan temple, where we visited the nearby park. I have wanted to go there before, but never made it until now. The park is quite small, but makes up for it with statues and colorful flowers. From here we walked towards French Concessions. It was lunch time, and luckily a cheap noodle place was so full that we had to look for another place to eat. We then stumbled upon a Vietnamese place, that my German friend had wanted us to go to earlier, but at that time it was closed. The place can only hold less than ten people, but we were lucky and could sit outside at the only vacant table. We had some good fried rice, noodles and ginger tea in Vietnamese style.

From there we walked along some roads I haven’t walked on that much and ended up in the artsy and expensive K11 mall. The lobby had lots of flowers and birds in cages that made quite beautiful sounds. Upstairs we also found a restaurant with their own vegetable garden inside. We had some cake at Baker and Spice while waiting for one of CCs friends. When he arrived, we went and bought a new Oneplus X phone for CCs mother. I was supposed to buy one for my mother as well, but they have different systems for China and Europe, so it might be better to get it online. During the day we walked from Jingan temple all the way to Peoples Square. The weather was great, sunny and warm, but the air was probably quite dirty, as both of us got sore throats in the end of the day. 

Beyond the Clouds

Siitä asti kun kävimme saksalaisten kanssa Lost Heaven ravintolassa syömässä, olen halunnut käydä Yunnan maakunnan ravintolassa. Onneksi halvempi ravintola löytyi netistä, kun selasin listaa, jossa Shanghain parhaimmat ruoat oli listattu. Beyond the Clouds sijaitsee Nanjing Roadin Forever 21 kaupan yläpuolella. Olen käynyt kaupassa useasti tietämättä, mitä ylimmässä kerroksessa löytyy. Paikka on melko samantapainen kun Lost Heaven, mutta hinnat paljon alemmat. Täällä sai kuusi annosta noin 20 eurolla. Kokeilimme kanaa, kalaa, perunasosetta, tofua, vihanneskeksejä ja ananas riisiä. Kala ja muusi oli todella hyvää, kun taas riisi ei ollut niin onnistunut kun muualla. Aina välillä on mukava löytää jokin uusi paikka, sillä olen saman kadun varrella monesti tyytynyt Wagas kahvilaan, jossa olen käyttänyt suunnilleen saman verran rahaa yhteen pastaan ja smootiin.

I found a Yunnanese place while looking at a list over the food in Shanghai at different price ranges. The mashed potato was recommended in the cheapest category, and since the Lost Heaven is a bit too pricey, this seemed perfect. Beyond the Clouds was located on Nanjing Road in the same building as Forever 21. I never even knew there were shops and restaurants above the five story shop. The atmosphere in the restaurant was quite similar to Lost Heaven on the Bund, but the prices much cheaper. We ordered six dishes: fish, chicken, tofu, mashed potato, vegetable crackers and pineapple rice. The pineapple rice was the most expensive and not as good as in some Thai places. On the other hand the mashed potatoes, as well as the fish were quite delicious. The two Yunnanese places I have been to so far where both good but on different levels. Lost Heaven had some of the best dishes ever, but at a high price tag, and at Beyond the Clouds I could try out more dishes without having to pay more than around 150rmb.  

Latina -brasililaisravintola

Viikonloppuna oli tarkoitus mennä keskustaan kävelemään French Concessions alueelle, mutta emme päässeet edes metrolle asti kun päätimme, että tässä tuulessa emme mene niin pitkälle. Ulkona oli siis aurinkoista, mutta mittarin mukaisen -1 pakkasessa ja kovassa tuulessa ei edes toppatakilla pärjännyt. Varmasti yhtä kylmää kuin siellä Suomen -25 astetta. Päätimme siis ajaa Jinke lu ostarille. Emme nähtävästi oikein muistaneet miten sinne ajetaan (olemme siis sinne ajanet ainakin viitisen kertaa), joten pistäessämme navigaattorin päälle olimme kumma kyllä ajaneet noin 25min paikan ohi..

Olimme jo nälissämme päästessämme perille, ja nopean valinnan jälkeen menimme Latina nimiseen brasilialais-paikkaan syömään. Buffetlounaan lisäksi pöytiin tarjoiltiin eri lihoja. Salaattipöytä oli kattava, ja hamstrasin etenkin uusia perunoita, joita en aikaisemmin kiinassa ole syönyt. Ruoka oli hyvää, mutta paikka ei kumminkaan ollut niin erikoinen, että sinne uusiksi menisi.

We were supposed to go to the French Concession and walk among the streets, but the freezing wind made a stop to our plans. It feels almost like -20, even though it is only -1 degrees Celsius. Instead of taking the metro we took the car and drove to Jinke lu. Or we thought we did.. After driving to the wrong place, we looked at the GPS and found out we had driven some 25 minutes the wrong way.

When we finally arrived we were so hungry that we quickly had to find a place to eat.  This time we opted for a place called Latina, as they had buffet and we would not have been in the mood to wait for our meal. In addition to the delicious salad, warm course and desert tables, some Brazilian style meats were served to the table. The food was good, but the place wasn’t that special that we would go there again.  

Yhden hengen hotpot

Kävimme viikko sitten lähiostarin ravintolassa syömässä hotpottia. Oli vähän toisen lainen kun mihin olen tottunut, sillä täällä kaikki sai oman kattilan, jonne lihat ja vihannekset pistetään kiehumaan. Mietimme, että tästä ehkä saisi hyvän business idean suomeen, mutta toisaalla en tiedä kuinka moni olisi valmis itse keittämään ruokansa, kun saman voi tehdä kotona. Moni kiinalainen vaikutti pitävän ravintolasta, sillä se oli melkein täynnä. Istuimme baaritiskimaisen pöydän päädyssä ja molemmille annettiin kattilat, vihanneksia ja lihaa, nuudelia ja kokista. Ainakin kun itse tekee ruokansa, näkee, että kaikki on tuoretta. Keittiökin oli avonainen painottaakseen raaka-aineiden laatuun ja puhtauteen. Annos maksoi noin 7 euroa, eli vähemmän kuin mitä normaalit monen hengen hotpotit maksaa.

A week ago we went to a restaurant in the mall nearby us that we haven’t been to before. It was crowded, but we managed to get two seats at the end of a long bar desk table. We both got our own pots, compared to normal hotpot restaurants were you share one pot. In this case we could have different meat and vegetables and also different spiciness and flavor in our hotpots when you don’t need to share. The food in these kind of places are much cleaner and fresher when you see everything before it is put into the pot. One pot including a drink cost some 50rmb.

Shanghain lähettyvillä on usea vanhanajan vesikaupunkia. Olen käynyt kahdessa, mutta päätimme ajaa Zhujiajiao-kaupunkiin, sillä se on tunnetuin. Vaikka kaupunki sijaitsee vain noin puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä, matka kesti ruuhkien takia paljon pidempään. Sisäänpääsy kaupunkiin on kuulemma parisen euroa, mutta sillä emme tulleet portin kautta, vaan parkkipaikalta, emme tarvinneet maksaa mitään. Kaupunki visiitti ei oikein mennyt niin kuin olin ajatellut, sillä itse käyn mielelläni katsomassa pari turistinähtävyyttä, vähän ostoksilla ja ehkä vielä syömässä jotain paikallista, tai vain nauttimassa teen. Reissu tehtiin CCn, hänen siskonsa ja siskon miehen kanssa, ja he eivät jaa samaa näkemystä hyvästä kaupunkikierroksesta. Toisin sanonen kävelimme vain kaupungin päästä päähän, ja siihen kului noin tunti. Eli käytimme tulo- ja paluumatkaan yli kolme tuntia ja kaupunki käytiin läpi tunnissa. Onneksi sentään yhtä ohutta leipää tuli sentään maistettua. Minua erityisesti viehätti talot, jotka oli maalattu värikkäästi tai muokattu uudemmaksi pilaamatta vanhaa tunnelmaa. Myös kukka asetelmat kaduilla ja pienten liikkeiden sisustukset olivat hienot.

There are quite a few ancient water towns nearby Shanghai. I have been to two of them, and now we chose Zhujiajiao, the most famous one as our next destination. The town was an hour and half away by car, but the trip lasted somewhat longer due to horrific traffic jams along the way. As we finally arrived the town was not crowded as winter and middle of the week is not the high season. The perfect city trip for me would be to see some sights, do some shopping and have lunch or a drink. But not with these people.. I made the trip together with CC, his sister, and the sister’s husband. They preferred just walking through the town as quickly as possible and that was it. The town was quite nice, especially the houses that were painted in some cool colors or in other ways had been made modern without losing the traditional Chinese style.
