Special roses for Valentine's

Eilen Kiinassa, niin kuin myös muualla, vietettiin Valentine’s Daytä, eli ystäväpäivää. CC oli ajoissa hankkinut lahjan. Paketista löytyi nalle, ja ihania ruusuja. Ruusut ovat saippuaa, eli voi aina irrottaa yhden lehden kerralla. Paketti tuoksuu todella hyvältä, mutta en ole vielä päässyt kokeilemaan ruusuja. Shanghaissa oli tarjolla vaikka mitä Valentine’s päivää varten, mutta emme me ylihinnoitetuille brunsseille tai illallisille menneet, vaan kokkasin pizzaa ja omenapiirakkaa kotona.

Yesterday we celebrated Valentine’s Day here in China, just like everywhere else. CC had prepared a gift for me. Inside the box were a teddy bear and a set of roses. The roses are actually soap, and I can use one leaf at a time. The roses smell wonderfully, but I haven’t tried them out yet. We didn’t go out to celebrate by eating brunch or dinner in some over expensive restaurant, but rather cooked at home and had some homemade pizza and apple pie.

Menimme kuun alussa Bengbu nimisen kaupungin lähettyvillä olevaan kaupunkiin seuraamaan CCn ystävän häitä. CC sai niin kuin aina hoitaa paljon kuljetuksia aamulla, ja itse osallistuin menoihin vasta siinä kymmenen aikaan aamulla. Tuttuun tapaan, sulhasen pitää hake morsian tämän kotoota, tai tässä tapauksessa hotellihuoneesta. Sulhanen ystävineen pyytää morsianta avaamaan oven ja hänen ystävänsä eivät salli tätä, mikäli heille ei ensin anneta punaisia kuoria, jotka sisältävät rahaa. Kovan työn tuloksena ja monen kuoren jälkeen ovi vattiin ja kappas vaan, morsian ei ollutkaan huoneessa. Jännä käänne olikin se, että hän oli mennyt piiloon toiseen kerrokseen, ystävän huoneeseen. No uudestaan koputtamaan, ja lisään rahaa hänen kavereilleen. Leikkien jälkeen, juhlakulkue hyppäsivät autoihinsa, ja noin kahdeksan auton letkassa ajoimme jokunen kortteli, kunnes saavuimme pariskunnan uuteen asuntoon. Saimme pienen lahjakassin saapuessamme perille, josta löytyi tupakkaa, karkkia, ja pyyhe, eli normaalit lahjat.

Asunnolla emme kauan olleet, vaan ajoimme lähistön ravintolaan, jossa olimme jo edellispäivänä syöneet illallisen. Juhlasalissa oli lähemmäs sata vierasta istumassa pöydissä. Länsimaalaiseen tapaan, morsian ja sulhanen kävelivät lavalle, sytyttivät kynttilöitä, kaatoivat samppanjaa laseihin, sormukset käteen ja pussailua jne. Tämän aikana kovalla äänellä ”speakeri” selosti miten he ovat täydellisiä toisilleen ja sen sellaista. Suurin ero suomalaisten ja kiinalaisten häiden välillä on se, että suomessa tunnelmä on rauhallisempi ja kiinassa taas huudetaan mikrofooniin täysillä ”tahdon” ja monesti jos ei huuda tarpeeksi kovaan, speakeri pyytää toistamaan. Vähän valoshowta ja musiikkia, ja loppuun vielä pariskunnan vanhemmat lavalle pitämään puheet. Tämän jälkeen meidät vietiin omaan yksityiseen huoneeseen, jossa sulhasen lähimmät ystävät olivat syömässä. Meitä oli huoneessa noin kymmenen henkeä, ja tarjolla oli suurimmaksi osaa samaa ruokaa kun päivä aikaisemmin. Toisin sanonen ymmärrän nyt ”rehearsal dinnerin” tarkoituksen, sillä olimme jo maistaneet ruoat päivän aikaisemmin. Pariskunta perheineen oli itsekin omassa, yksityishuoneessaan syömässä, mikä vaikutti jotenkin oudolta, sillä kuka ei omissa häissään halua nähdä vieraitaan? Jatkoimme ruokailun jälkeen kohti CCn kotikaupunkia, joten enpä tiedä mitä luvassa oli sen jälkeen. Ajomatka oli taas aivan kauheata, ja mikä olisi pitänyt olla noin 5h matka, olikin 8h tukkeutuneilla motareilla.

In the beginning of February, CCs good friend got married. That is the reason why we had to drive some 14 hours. The wedding was quite similar to the two weddings I had attended before in China. In the morning, or around ten o’clock, the groom goes and picks up the bride from her home, or in this case from the hotel room. The groom, with his friends, needs to bribe the bride’s friends to let him in. In my opinion, they had planned it quite cleverly, and the bride was actually in another room, on another floor. When they finally found her, they had some games before they could take her with them and drive to the couple’s new home. About eight cars drove after each other to the nearby condo. We didn’t spend much time there, but the couple seemed to have some traditional meal before we all left for the wedding banquet.

There were already some 100 people in the wedding reception. We followed the bride and groom do some westernized customs, such as light a candle, exchange rings etc. There was a speaker, who talked so loud my ears hurt. After some music and light effects the couple’s parent entered the stage and gave a speech. The thing I like the least is the shouting the couple has to do. When they say “I do”, it isn’t peaceful or romantic, it is more like a competition on who’s louder. After this we were ushered into a private room to have dinner. We had actually been to the same place the day before when we arrived in the evening, and had the exact same food. Now I know what rehearsal dinner stands for.. We didn’t stay after the dinner, but rather leave straight away and drive 8h to get to CCs hometown. Once again we got stuck in traffic for ages and it was one of the worst drives in my life! 

Räjähtävä apinan vuosi

Hyvää Kiinalaista Uutta Vuotta! Tänä vuonna vietetään apinan vuotta. Täällä maalla tuntuu kun olisi keskellä sotaa, sillä raketit ja muut räjähteet ovat sen verran voimakkaita. En usko, että Suomessa tälläisiä räjähteitä voisi lajillisesta myydä. Mitä kovempi ääni, sitä parempi kiinalaisten mielestä. Syy tähän on se, että kovilla räjähdyksillä yritetään saada onnen ja rahan jumalan huomion. Kadulla ei tähän aikaan, tai itse asiassa seuraavan viikon aikana uskalla kulkea, sillä räjähteitä ja raketteja sytytetään missä milloinkin. Ihmiset eivät millään suojaudu, joten eipä ole ihmeellistä, mikäli täällä paljon tapaturmia sattuu. Esim. raketteja sytytetään kerrostalojen keskellä, joten tulipaloja on vaikea välttää. Tulipalosta uutena vuotena parempi esimerkki toisessa blogi postissa kiinalaisesta uudesta vuodesta maalla. Loppuun vielä voisin lisätä, että Shanghaissa rakettien käyttö uutena vuotena on kielletty ja poliisi jakaa sakkoja käyttäjille ja myyjille. Monet kiinalaiset ovat tästä harmissaan, mutta omasta mielestäni tämä vaikuttaa suuresti ilmanlaatuun kaupungissa. Shanghaissa ilmalaatu on ollut paljon parempi nyt kun edellisinä vuosina, ja luulen syyn olevan mm. nämä rajoitteet.

Lisäys: Kuvat ovat seuraavalta päivältä, josta näkyy kuinka paljon raketteja ja muita räjähteitä sytytettiin kello kahdentoista aikaan pihallamme. Tätä roskaa ja paperia ei saa siivota pois, sillä se on symboli rahalle, ja siivoaminen veisi raha onnen. Sama koskee peseytymistä ja siivoamista ylipäänsä tänä päivänä, sitä ei voi vahingossakaan tehdä, sillä hyvä onni, jonka on tänä päivänä saanut, ei saa heittää pois.

Happy Chinese New Year! This year will be the year of the monkey and it will start on the 8^th of February. The new year has started with what sounds like war. The fireworks and firecrackers that they use here have really loud explosion sounds. I really wonder how this common practice of setting of these explosions is really liked by everyone. Of course the reason behind this is to attract the fortune gods attention and so on, but some of the firecrackers they use are so loud that your ears hurt if you accidentally walk too nearby. In addition I have heard that there are lots of accidents in China, as nothing is done to prevent fires etc. Fireworks are set of straight next to high rise building, so don’t wonder at all when one of the fireworks crashes into an apartment and sets it on fire. Regarding fire safety I will have another interesting moment I will share more about in another post about New Year’s celebration here in Anqing. Another thing good mentioning is that in Shanghai it is forbidden to set off fireworks and firecrackers in the city. The police will fine people some 500rmb as well as sellers of fireworks will get really high fines. Many Chinese citizens are not happy they restrict their traditions, but it is one of the best ways to prevent pollutions, as the air in Shanghai has been better this winter than it has been the past two years. 

Update: I added the picture from the day after New Year’s Eve with all the paper and trash left behind from the fireworks and firecrackers. The paper cannot be cleaned on the day of New Year, because that means that all the money you will earn during the year will swept away as well! The same thing regarding cleaning and washing during the first day of New Year, it is strictly forbidden.

Vuosipäivä kukkia

Vuosipäivänämme CC toi kukkia, jossa oli kiva sammakkokortti. Kukat eivät oikein pysy hengissä täällä yhtä kauan kuin Suomessa, mutta toisaalla hintakin paljon alempi Kiinassa ja kukkakauppoja löytyy jokaiselta kadulta.

On our anniversary CC brought some flowers with a cute frog card. Flowers don’t survive that long in the harsh weather conditions here in Shanghai, especially my orchid died within a month as orchids in Finland live for years.  

Yhden hengen hotpot

Kävimme viikko sitten lähiostarin ravintolassa syömässä hotpottia. Oli vähän toisen lainen kun mihin olen tottunut, sillä täällä kaikki sai oman kattilan, jonne lihat ja vihannekset pistetään kiehumaan. Mietimme, että tästä ehkä saisi hyvän business idean suomeen, mutta toisaalla en tiedä kuinka moni olisi valmis itse keittämään ruokansa, kun saman voi tehdä kotona. Moni kiinalainen vaikutti pitävän ravintolasta, sillä se oli melkein täynnä. Istuimme baaritiskimaisen pöydän päädyssä ja molemmille annettiin kattilat, vihanneksia ja lihaa, nuudelia ja kokista. Ainakin kun itse tekee ruokansa, näkee, että kaikki on tuoretta. Keittiökin oli avonainen painottaakseen raaka-aineiden laatuun ja puhtauteen. Annos maksoi noin 7 euroa, eli vähemmän kuin mitä normaalit monen hengen hotpotit maksaa.

A week ago we went to a restaurant in the mall nearby us that we haven’t been to before. It was crowded, but we managed to get two seats at the end of a long bar desk table. We both got our own pots, compared to normal hotpot restaurants were you share one pot. In this case we could have different meat and vegetables and also different spiciness and flavor in our hotpots when you don’t need to share. The food in these kind of places are much cleaner and fresher when you see everything before it is put into the pot. One pot including a drink cost some 50rmb. 

Viimeinen työpäivä illallisineen

Viimeinen työpäivä tuli ja meni viime torstaina. Perjantain piti olla viimeinen virallinen päivä, mutta sillä sinä päivänä sähköt eivät olisi toimineet, sain yhden vapaapäivän ennen kotimatkaa. Luulin, että viimeisenä päivänä ei tapahtuisi paljon, mutta se olikin todella kiireinen. Minulla oli kahdeksan 30-minuutin tuntia, kirjoitusopetustunti ja lisäksi piti siivota kone ja pöytä, käydä hakemassa nimikirjoituksia jokaiselta osastolta ja palauttaa tavarat oikeille henkilöille. Onneksi selvisin ja töitten jälkeen ajoimme Jinkelu ostoskeskukseen syömään. Valitsimme tällä kertaa Singaporelaisen keittiön. Tilasimme snack-lautasen, jossa oli kananvartaita, kevätrullia ja muita pieniä herkkuja. Satay-possu ei ollut hyvää, mutta laksa keitto oli maukas. Saimme itse kiehuvaan keittoon lisätä vihanneksia ja mereneläviä.

                                                                                                                                                                   

My last day at work was finally on Thursday. Actually, I was supposed to work on Friday, but to my big relief the building would turn of the power for that day, so my last day was moved up. I thought it would be a boring last day, but I was busier than I had expected. Lots if short classes and writing class in addition to cleaning my computer and workspace and doing some administration tasks before I could leave. After the hectic day we drove to Jinkelu, where we had some great Singaporean food. We ordered a snack platter, with ribs, chicken on spear, spring rolls and so on. The satay pork skin was not good but the laksa soup was tasty. We could add the seafood and vegetables in the soup on our own. The restaurant was packed when we arrived and quite big, but still comfortable. I’m happy it is easy to try out different food from different countries in this city. 

Harrastuksena Ikea

Olemme viimeisen kuukauden aikana käyneet kolmesti Ikeassa. Ruoka on hyvää ja halpaa, jos haluaa syödä lohta ja muita länsimaalaisia ruokia Kiinassa. Toiseksi täältä löytää hyviä ja ei niin kalliita huonekaluja. Cckin on nyt tottunut siihen, että huonekalut ja keittiötarvikkeet ostetaan Ikeasta, ja hän innoissaan kiertelee paikkoja. Kerran otimme hänen äitinsä ja isäpuolensa mukaan ostoksille.

Olemme kahdesti olleet viikonloppuna, jolloin paikalla on aivan liikaa porukkaa. Ruokajonossa voi olla jopa sata ihmistä edessä. Kävimme viimeksi tiistaina töitten jälkeen, ja silloin oli melkeinpä tyhjää. Jonossa ei ollut paljon ihmisiä ja ruoka oli kello kuuden jälkeen puoleen hintaan. Tiistaina ruokaosaston ruoat ovat -15%, joten keksejä ja muita herkkuja tuli ostettua. Myöhemmin sitten lisään siitä, mitä on tullut ostettua.

                                                                                                                                                                

We have been to Ikea three times during the last month. Twice during weekend and once during the week. It is extremely crowded during the weekend, and almost empty in the evening on Tuesday. We go there both because of the good and cheap food, but also because we need new furniture. Cc had got used to the idea that we buy furniture and kitchenware from Ikea. It is quite nice to walk around and look at the display rooms to give an insight on what Nordic homes look like.  

On Tuesday the food was -50% after 18 o’clock, so we had quite a feast! The food in the shop was also on sale during that day, so I stocked up some cookies and other sweets. It is nice to have a car, so we can easily buy furniture without having to pay for delivery. Ikea is just some 20 minutes away, so it is quite convenient to drive there. I will later post what I have bought from Ikea during the last shopping trips.

CCn sisko meni naimiisin itsenäisyysviikolla. Päivää ennen häitä kävimme noutamassa pari CCn ystävää, jotka tulivat Shanghain ulkopuolelta häitä varten. Iltapäivällä menimme ns. harjoittelu illalliselle, jossa vieraat kokoontuivat juhlasaliin ja söimme yhdessä. Illallisen jälkeen menimme CCn ja hänen ystävien kanssa hänen isänsä hotelliin, jossa me kaikki myös yövyimme, sisko mukaan lukien. Illalla pelasimme korttia ja mahjongia.

Seuraavana päivänä heräsimme kahdeksan aikaan ja menimme syömään hotelli aamupalan. Aamupalan jälkeen CC oli kiireinen, sillä hänen piti järjestellä paljon. Yhdeksän aikaan menin siskon, eli morsiamen huoneeseen, jossa häntä meikattiin ja tehtiin hiukset. Vähän ajan kuluttua suuri määrä morsiamen sukulaisia ja ystäviä kerääntyi huoneeseen. Minä, morsian ja kolme hänen ystävää, siirryimme makuhuoneeseen. Asiaan kuuluu, että sulhanen tulee morsiamen aamulla noutamassa kotoaan. Ovi pistetään lukkoon, ja sulhanen pitää lahjoa ystävät avaamaan ohi antamalla punaisia kirjekuoria, jossa on rahaa. Ei ollut paljon lahjomista, sillä jo parin minuutin jälkeen ovi avautui, ja sulhanen pääsi sisään huoneeseen.

Sulhanen ja morsian antoivat morsiamen vanhemmille teetä, ja he saivat vastineeksi punaisia kirjekuoria. CC otti morsiamen reppuselkään ja kantoi hänet ulos hotellista. Ulkona kuusi hienompaa autoa oli odottamassa. Minä ja CC saimme mennä kolmanteen autoon. Monet vieraat joutuivat itse löytää kyydin juhlapaikkaan, sillä kaikki eivät voi autoihin mennä. Autot ajoivat letkassa ympäri kotipaikkamme keskustaa.

Lopulta saavuimme sulhasen kodille, jossa morsian itse asiassa on asunut parisen vuotta. Heidän uusi kotinsa oli koristeltu valokuvilla, ja sielläkin sama rituaali, jossa teetä annettiin sulhasen vanhemmille, toistettiin. Tämän jälkeen menimme sulhasen kotiin, joka sijaitsee heidän kotinsa vastapäätä, ja söimme makeisia. Sulhasen äiti jakeli punaisia kirjekuoria ja minäkin sain yhden. Sisällä oli 100rmb, eli noin 15euroa.

Täältä ajoimme letkassa hääsaliin, jossa söimme lounaaksi dumplingeja. Lounaan jälkeen ajoimme letkassa puistoon ottamaan valokuvia. Korkeat korot olivat minulle liikaa, ja puistokävelyllä oli pakko ottaa ne pois. Puistossa oli meidän lisäksi ainakin kaksi muuta hääseuruetta. Ihme kyllä sulhasen tai morsiamen vanhemmat eivät olleet kuvauksissa mukana.

Ajoimme takaisin juhlapaikkaan, jossa pelasin vieraiden kanssa mahjongia parisen tuntia ennen kuin illallinen alkoi. Illalliseen tuli noin kaksisataa vierasta ja ruokaa oli yllin kyllin tarjolla. Illallisen aikana pari sai sormuksena, heitti kukkakimpun valituille henkilöille, leikkasivat kakun jne. Koko ajan mukana oli juontaja joka puhui ja kyseli heiltä kysymyksiä. CCn täti lauloi lavalla, ja myös morsian esiintyi. Morsian vaihtoi kolmesti asunsa, ja sulhanen kahdesti.

Pari seurueineen kävi jokaisessa pöydässä skoolaamassa, ja ennen kuin ruokailu loppui, kävimme CCn kanssa skoolaamassa sukulaisten kanssa. Istuimme CCn ja hänen ystäviensä kanssa samassa pöydässä, kun taas sukulaiset ja pari istui salin toisella puolella. Kaikki antoivat pariskunnalle punaisia kirjekuoria, mutta minä Suomalaiseen tapaan olin paketoinut heille Pentikin maljakon. Illallisen loputtua suurin osa vieraista lähti kotiin, niin kuin minäkin, ja loput lähtivät karaokeen.

                                                                                                                                                            

CCs sister got married during the Golden Week. A day before the wedding we picked up some of CCs friends that came out of town. Together with them we went to the rehearsal dinner, where we just ate together with some of the guests, but there was no program. After dinner we took them back to their hotel, where we spent the evening in the bride’s room playing cards and mahjong.

The next day we got up at about eight and had breakfast together. CC was quite busy as he had to arrange a lot of things in the morning. At nine I went to the bride’s room where she was getting ready. After a while the room was full of friends and relatives. It is a Chinese tradition for the groom to come and pick up the bride in the morning. I, the bride, and some of her friends locked us inside the bedroom. The groom should bribe the girls to open the door. Unfortunately, he didn’t need to bribe too much as they got the door open.

The bride and groom took part in a ceremony where they handed some tea to the bride’s parents and the parents handed them some red envelops with money. After this, CC carried the sister on his back, out from the hotel. Six expensive cars were waiting outside, and I was seated in the third one. Those that were not as close to the couple, had to take themselves to the wedding reception. The cars drove around the small center until they reached the home of the groom.

The sister has been living with the groom’s family for some years already. Inside their new home, the ceremony of handing tea and envelops was repeated with the groom’s parents. After this we went to the groom’s parents’ home and ate some sweets. The groom’s mother handed out red envelops to the guests and I got one with 100rmb.

After this we took the cars back to the reception. There we had some dumplings for lunch before we drove off to a park to take pictures. Weirdly enough non of the parents took part in the pictures. The park had at least two other groups of people from weddings. After the pictures we drove back and played mahjong for a couple of hours with some of the guests.

The dinner started at five and some two hundred guests attended the ceremony. Lots of food was served and there was some entertainment while we were eating. The couple exchanged the rings, threw the bouquet, cut the cake and did some other western things. An aunt of CC sang and the sister as well preformed with some singing and acting. There was a speaker all the time talking and asking questions.

We were sitting with CCs friends in a separate table from the couple and the rest of the family. The couple went on a round and toasted with each table. Before the dinner ended I went together with CC and toasted with some relatives. In the end most people, like me, went home, as other continued to go to a KTV bar. 

Perinteinen hääsaattue

Suzhoussa, pikkukatua pitkin kävellessämme, vastaan tuli perinteinen hääsaattue. Tapaan kuuluu pukea punaiseen, mutta nykyään monet eivät seuraa näitä perinteitä. Samaan aikaan kun hääpari ajoi veneellä ohi, katua pitkin kävelivät jonkin sortin papeilta näyttäviä henkilöitä ja ryhmä soittamassa musiikkia. Jännä nähdä miten häät vaihtelevat perheiden, kylien ja kaupunkien välillä.

                                                                                                                                                              

In Suzhou we witnessed a traditional wedding. The couple was standing in the boat and some priests and musicians walked along the road beside the river. They were all wearing red, which is the traditional color for a wedding.  

Kiireiset viikot

Tuntuu, ettei minulla ole moneen viikkoon ollut aikaa kirjoitella blogissa. En itse asiassa ole avannut koko tietokonetta moneen päivään. Töissä on ollut kiire, ja vaikka en muitten työntekijöiden tapaan joudu tekemään ylitöitä, minulla ei kumminkaan ole paljon aikaa illalla. Iltasin kokkaan, käyn salilla tai muuten vain laiskottelen. Viime sunnuntaina täällä Kiinassa vietettiin keski-syksy-päivää, eli Mid-Autumn Day juhlaa. Sinä päivänä syödään kuu-kakkuja, mutta en itse kokeillut ainuttakaan sinä päivänä. Ajoimme yli puolituntia päästäkseen Haagen-Dazsin kahvilaan ostaakseen jäätelö kuu-kakun, mutta heillä ei ihme kyllä niitä ollut, vaikka menussa oli kyllä kuvat ja kaikki! Tänään olen istunut kotosalla, sillä meillä on viikon mittainen loma. Lokakuun ensimmäinen viikko on kansallisviikko, eli silloin kiinalaiset matkustavat jne. Mekin voisimme jonnekin matkustaa, mutta nyt ei vain ole fiilistä lähteä mihinkään. Ensi viikon puolella CCn sisko menee naimisiin, joten häitä vietetään kolmisen päivää ja siihen vielä päälle kaikki valmistelut.

                                                                                                                                                                

I feel like I haven’t had the time to write in my blog in weeks. Work has been stressful and when coming home late in the evening, I never feel like opening up my computer. I usually cook or go to the gym, and after this there is not much time to do anything else. Last Sunday, China celebrated Mid-Autumn Holiday with come moon cakes. Unfortunately, I didn’t eat any moon cakes, as Haagen-Dazs didn’t have any ice cream ones in their shop, even though they have them on the menu! Today I have been just at home, as I have a week long holiday. In the beginning of October is the National Holiday or Golden Week, when Chinese people travel around the country. We should also go somewhere, but I don’t know where exactly. Next week CCs sister will get married, so half of the holiday will be spent at the wedding, which takes up some three days.

Just pure tasting heaven for a chocoholic like me

The chocolate had always a picture displaying which one it is in case you would like to buy it in the shop

So many different flavors were available

Olin jo lataamassa yli 30 kuvaa, mutta vähän pitää edes itseään rajoittaa. Eli sunnuntaina CCllä oli taas syntymäpäivät, vaikka viime syntymäpäivistä kului noin pari viikkoa, taas niitä tuli vietettyä. Kiinassa ei vietetä virallisia syntymäpäiviä, vaan syntymäpäivä on joka vuosi eri päivänä kuukalenterin mukaan. Tämän systeemin mukaan CC olisi vuoden vanhempi, kuin mitä hän oikeasti länsimaalaisen laskelman mukaan olisi. No jaa, päästäänpä asiaan. Kävimme siis CCn synttäreiden kunniaksi Zotter suklaatehtaalla. Se oli CClle yllätys ja suklaatehtaan kierroksen lisäksi hän sai itse valmistaa oman suklaansa.

Tulimme juuri sopivasti paikalle, sillä kierros alkoi viisi minuuttia tulomme jälkeen. Yksi henkilö maksoi alle 30 euroa, mutta rahan arvoinen suklaa kokemus se kylää olikin! Kierroksen alussa menimme auditorioon katsomaan intro videota Zotterista ja suklaan alkuperästä. Meidän lisäksi ryhmässä oli vain neljä muuta henkilöä. Videossa puhuttiin saksaa, ja nopealla englannin kielen tekstityksellä CC ei ymmärtänyt mitään. No enpäs minäkään paljon muista koko videosta, sillä olin jo valmis maistelemaan! Olin siis etukäteen lukenut, että paikan päällä saa syödä niin paljon kun vain jaksaa kaiken maailman suklaita, että alkaa jopa oksettaa! Challange accepted!

Kierroksen veti kiinalainen ja saksalainen, ja kumpikin puhuivat englantia. CC siis oli ainut ryhmässä, joka oli kiinalainen. Otimme omat maistiaislusikat, jotka saimme kierroksen jälkeen itse pitää. Kierroksen alussa maistelimme kolmea eri kaakaopapua, jotka olivat todella kitkeriä, mutta eri maista tuodut pavut maistuvat erilaisilta. Papujen jälkeen maistoimme suklaamassaa, joka ei siis ollut sekoitettu maidolla tai sokerilla. Samalla kiinalainen opas kertoi vähän faktaa miten suklaata valmistetaan jne. Maistomme myös jossain kohtaa suklaa nibsejä.

Saavuimme käytävän päähän, josta löytyi suklaalähteitä, ja vetämällä hanasta suklaata valui lusikalle. Tässä kohtaa taisi olla viittä eri suklaata maistettavana. Siirryimme huoneeseen, jossa oli mm. mansikka, vadelma, passion hedelmä ja muita marja suklaita. Tämä oli yksi parhaimmista makukokemuksista, sillä maku oli erittäin raikas! Jatkoimme huoneeseen, jossa pystyi haistella eri aineksia, kuten kanelia, pippuria jne.

Ohjatun kierroksen viimeinen etappi oli DIY huone. Siellä maistelimme yli kymmentä eri suklaa fondueta ja paljon pähkinöitä, marjoja ja suklaapaloja oli tarjolla. Olisin syönyt itseni kylläiseksi täällä, mikäli opas ei olisi sanonut, että edessä on vielä 70% maistettavaa. CC valitsi kaksi eri suklaata, 60% tummaa suklaata ja mansikkasuklaata, jotka pistettiin vuohi muottiin. CC sai sitten puu tikulla sekoitella suklaita ja tehdä kuvioita. Tämän jälkeen siirryttiin koristeluun ja siihen sai käyttää aivan kaikkia aineksia, eli mahdollisuudet ovat aivan mielettömät.

Valmis suklaa jätettiin asettumaan, ja siirryimme kierroksen toiseen osaan, jossa sai ihan itsekseen maistella rauhassa. Edessä oli ainakin sata eri suklaamaistiaista kipoissa, leikattavana ja juotavana. Juoma puolelta maistoin vain viittä eri makua, vaikka niitä olisi ollut viisitoista. Saimme valita yhden ja tehdä oman kuuman kaakaojuoman. Tämän jälkeen vähän suklaasnackejä päälle ja vähän pahan makuista likööri ja alkoholi suklaata, ja sitten kierros olikin jo ohi! Parisen tuntia meillä kesti, ja jo juomapuolella CC oli kuolla suklaa-koomaan. Itse selvisin hyvin, veikkaanpa, että kokonaisen Fazerin vetäminen yhdessä istunnossa on auttanut minua jaksamaan tällaiset koetulemukset. Kierroksen jälkeen olisi vielä voinut ostaa suklaata mukaan kotiin, mutta ne olivat todella kalliita, joten olen iloinen, että CC sentään sai oman suklaansa mukaansa kotiin. Todella kiva päivä ja muutenkin mielenkiintoinen ja maukas kokemus!

                                                                                                                                                                         

On Sunday we celebrated CCs birthday, yes, I know the second time in just two weeks, since in China they actually do not celebrate the official one, but in fact, the birthday changes every year depending on the moon calendar. So back to the point… I had found a chocolate factory tour in Shanghai, and I decided to go there with CC on his birthday. He had no idea where we were going, as the factory is in one of the outlets cities we have visited many times.

The Zotter chocolate factory is of Austrian origin, but they have one other location, and that is Shanghai. The tour costs 180rmb per person, but the amount of chocolate you can eat makes up for the price. Luckily, we arrived just some five minutes before the English guided tour began, so together with four other Western guys we went on the tour. We were first shown a video introducing Zotter. The video was mostly in German with English subtitles, so CC was as confused as one not speaking English might be in this situation. After this an introduction to cacao farming in Nicaragua was shown. I didn’t pay too much attention as I was just waiting for the tasting of chocolate to begin!

After the video, two guys, one German and one Chinese showed us around. The tour started by all of us taking one tasting spoon that we could take home after the tour ended. We started by tasting some very bitter cacao beans. They had different tastes depending on from what part of the world they were. After this we got to the cacao butter and cacao nibs part. During the whole time the guides explained how chocolate is made. In the end of the first corridor we came to a space with maybe six different chocolate fondues to taste.

After this we tasted some berry chocolate, including the best raspberry chocolate I have ever tasted. We went through a corridor were we could smell different ingredients used in making flavored chocolate such as cinnamon, pepper, etc. This preceded the DIY room. I was the only one in the group that had paid for making your own chocolate. I let CC design his own one as his birthday present. First we were able to taste some ten different varieties of chocolate fondues. After this CC could decide what chocolate to use, so he took 60% dark chocolate and strawberry chocolate. He chose a goat as his form and the chocolate was added to the form for him. He could use a stick to make different patterns in the chocolate by mixing the colors and after this he could decorate it with nuts, berries, other chocolate etc. There were so many options I was waiting and tasting all the snacks they had. I would have eaten more if the guide wouldn’t have said that 70% of the tasting is still ahead of us!

After he had finished his chocolate we went to the second part of the tour, were we could walk freely and take our time. On the second floor there were closer to 100 different chocolates to taste. Some were put into small bowls, as others needed to be cut with a machine. As we entered the chocolate drinking area CC was getting into a chocolate coma, and didn’t want to try anything more. I tasted maybe five of their fifteen different hot chocolate flavors. We were even given the chance to make your own cup of chocolate which was nice. There were still two tasting areas with some chocolate snacks and some alcohol filled chocolate. It took us some two hours to go through the tasting and it was awesome. Unfortunately, the chocolate they have on sale is quite expensive, so we went home only with CCs very unique piece of chocolate.
