Tailored for Me

I had planned that on the first week in Shanghai, I would go and make some clothes at Lujiabang tailor market. This didn’t happen, however, until this rainy weekend. I went first the jeans tailor that I know from before, but the seller that I used to talk to wasn’t there. Regardless, I still managed to keep the price down as it normally is, even though he tried to say that it is more expensive since the fabric is better.. I ended up making three pair of pants; black, rose and beige. I had two pairs of jeans that I wanted to copy, since I like having things made out of my own clothes. That way I can be more certain that the style will fit me.

Next I looked for a place to copy my Zara jersey dress. The dress in itself was never expensive, but the style is great. Here again I ended up making two copies of the dress at an older Chinese ladies jersey store. She asked me first how much I have paid for the dress before saying how much I should pay for the copies. The copies and the real one ended up costing about the same amount, meaning some 150rmb. The lady told me not to tell my friends about the price, as she was not willing to make more jersey dresses for a price this low. I seem to be quite lucky with the prices, since this time I didn’t even start by haggling the price down, instead she gave me the exact price I was willing to pay. She told me dresses would be ready in ten days, which is quite long, as they usually make simple clothes in seven days. I said eight days, she said ok and wanted me to come in the afternoon. It will be interesting picking up the dresses, as I have no idea how well this place makes their clothes.

Heti alussa, kun tulin Shanghaihin, oli tarkoitus mennä teettämään vaatteita. Se jostain syystä jäi tekemättä, kunnes nyt sateisena viikonloppuna lähdimme autolla keskustaan. Menin ensiksi tutulle farkku-räätälille, mutta myyjänä ei tällä kertaa ollut sama kuin aikaisempina kertoina. Tästä huolimatta sain hinnan pidettyä samana, vaikka myyjä yrittikin nostaa hintaa sanomalla, että valitsin hyvän kankaan. Nyt sitä odotellaan kolmea farkkua: Mustat, roosat ja beiget. Malleina oli kaksi omaa housuani, sillä siten takaa, että malli istuu.

Toiseksi halusin kopioida Zaran trikoo mekon. Mekko jo itessään ei maksanut paljoa, mutta malli on sen verran hyvä, että pakko sellainenkin kahtena kappaleena teettää. Trikoo-kaupassa en ole aikaisemmin käynyt, joten lopputuloksesta ei ole hajuakaan. Myyjänä oli vanhempi kiinalainen rouva, joka uteli mitä olin mekosta alun perin maksanut, ennen kun hän halusi antaa minulle hinnan. Eiköhän aito ja kopiot aika samanhintaisia tule olemaan, eli vähän yli parikymmentä euroa. Myyjä korosti vielä lopussa, että älä kerro tätä hintaa kavereilleni, sillä hän ei jatkossa aio tehdä näin halvalla hinnalla mekkoja. No kävipäs minulla sitten hyvä tuuri. Tässä liikkeessä oli kuulema ruuhka, joten hän yritti, että tulisin vasta kymmenen päivän päästä hakemaan. Normaalisti kaikki ei niin erikoiset vaatteet ovat viikon kuluessa valmiita. Sain hänet suostumaan kahdeksaan päivään, jos tulen vasta iltapäivällä ne noutamassa. Tekisi mieli teettää vaikka mitä vaatteita, mutta kun en tiedä miten hyvän tuotteen saa, jos valitsee mallin vain kuvien perusteella. Siksi käynkin mielummin lähiseudun kaupat läpi, jossa heti kokeillessa tietää, toimiiko vaate vai ei.

Viime vuonna kävimme Anqingissa teettämässä taulut parille käsityölle. Tänä vuonna päätimme käydä samassa paikassa teettämässä raamit valokuville. Valokuvat printattiin Shanghain kameramarkkinoilla. Liikkeessä oli ennen meitä eläkeläisnainen, joka vinkkasi meille, ettei kalliimpi valokuva paperi ole paljon parempi, joten tyydyimme halvempaan. Kuvat mukana suuntasimme Anqingiin uutena vuotena. Kävimme päivän ennen uutta vuotta meidän käsityö liikkeessä, jossa on tullut käytyä aina kun käymme kaupungissa. Nainen, joka yksin vastaa liikkeestä, ja samalla tekee raamit käsin, oli niin kiireinen, että ei olisi ottanut tilaustamme vastaan, mikäli emme olisi käyneet liikkeessä niin usein. Hän ei kuulemma ollut nukkunut pitkään aikaan, ja hän oli jo saanut meitä ennen 50 tilausta. Hän ei ehtinyt saada taulujamme valmiiksi ennen kun palasimme Shanghaihin, joten odotamme, että CCn setä tuo ne mukanaan ensi kuussa. Raamit neljälle valokuvalle maksoi hänen liikkeessään vain 15 euroa, ja saimme itse valita millaiset halusimme.

We framed some of my handwork last year and during the New Year in Anqing we did it again. This time I had some pictures from Paris that I wanted to frame. In Shanghai, we got the Photography equipment market, where we printed out five four large pictures and about double the amount of smaller ones. The small ones we put into Ikea frames, but the larger ones needs something nicer. We took the pictures with us to Anqing, where we have a shop with handwork that we visit every time we go to the city. There is a nice lady that recognizes us, mainly since I’m her only foreign customer. Even though we came with the pictures for framing one day before New Year, she was willing to take them. She told us she was so busy that she didn’t even have time to sleep. She works by herself and during the holiday she had some fifty frames to make. She didn’t have time to finish them, but an uncle will bring them to Shanghai when he gets here next month. Framing four pictures, during a busy season, set us back by only 100rmb.

Kuten monena viikonloppuna on tullut kirjoitettua, päätin teettää mekon räätälimarkkinoilla. Ensimmäistä kertaa asiat eivät menneet niin kuin oli sovittu. Olin löytänyt netistä kivan kuvan ja näytin sen yhdelle räätälimarkkinoiden myyjälle. Hän sanoi, että ei ihan samaa voi saada, mutta samantapaisen kyllä. Yläosa piti tehdä pitsistä, ja kuulemma Suzhou kaupungissa saisi ostettua hienoa pitsiä. Myyjä sanoi, että hänen kaverinsa voi sieltä käydä ostamassa ja hän lähettää minulle kuvia eri vaihtoehdoista. Maksoin 60 euroa etukäteen, ja loput, noin. 40 euroa, maksetaan kun mekko on valmis.

Kuvista ei kuulunut mitään, vaikka kyselin niiden perään. Viikko tilauksen jälkeen kävimme markkinoilla uudestaan hakeaksemme CCn puvun, ja ajattelimme, että minullakin olisi mekko valmiina ensimmäistä kokeilua varten. Eipä ollutkaan mekkoa kokeiltavana, vaikka myyjä oli sanonut, että mekkon alaosa valmistuisi nopeasti.

No seuraavalla kerralla kuulemma mekon alaosa olisi valmis. Kävimme seuraavalla reissulla myös toisella räätälimarkkinoilla noutamassa CCn siskon ja hänen poikaystävänsä hääasut. Saapuessamme kokeilemaan mekkoa, nainen ei ollutkaan paikalla, vaikka kello olikin jo lähemmäs 10. Soittelimme hänen perään ja hän kuulemaa avaa shopin vasta yhdeltätoista. No onneksi hän kiiruhti paikalle, ja sain kokeilla alaosan. Hame ei sinänsä ollut mikään erikoinen, ja hameen alaosasta puuttui tilaamani pitsi osat. No kuulemma sen hän pystyi lisäämään seuraavalle kerralle. Mekon tärkein osa, eli pitsitoppista ei vieläkään kuulunut mitään. Vasta sen jälkeen kun sanoimme, että tehkää työnne vähän nopeammin, aloin saamaan kuvia eri pitsivaihtoehdoista. Mikään kuvista ei ollut läheskään samanlainen kun mitä olin halunnut alun perin.

No jälleen kerran räätälimarkkinoille katsomaan mitä he olivat saaneet aikaisekseen. Nyt toppi oli tehty, mutta se ei ollut lähelläkään sitä mitä olin tilannut. Se ei ollut pitsistä tehty, vaan jostain halvasta, läpikuultavasta kankaasta. Pitsiä oli ainoastaan lisätty helmaan. Lisäksi olin halunnut paljon helmikirjailua, mutta sitä he eivät olleet tehneet ollenkaan. Kaiken lisäksi toppi oli liian pieni, eli en olisi sitä voinut käyttää. Meillä oli vain noin pari viikkoa jäljellä ennen kun tarvitsisin mekon, ja sen tekemiseen oli jo tarvittu kuukausi, joten emme enää jaksaneet odottaa kaikkia korjauksia. Vaadimme rahamme takaisin, ja ihme kyllä saimme ne takaisin. Nainen yritti totta kai sanoa, että heillä on ollut kuluja tehdessään mekkoa, ja että voisin saada hameosan halvemmalla. Sanoin etten hameella tee mitään ilman toppia, joten onneksi en sitä hetken väittelyn jälkeen tarvinnut ostaa. Usein räätälit eivät anna takasin maksua, mutta luulen, että kiinaksi väittely toimii paremmin. Lisäksi väittely shopin edessä häätää kaikki asiakkaat pois ja antaa paikalle huonon maineen, joten luulen, että hän halusi maksamalla päästä meistä nopeasti eroon.

                                                                                                                                                           

As I have written in many of my weekend posts during the previous month, I had ordered a dress to be tailor made. I found a picture on the internet and showed it to one tailor shop that told me that they could do it. The dress is two pieces and the top is made out of lace and pearls or other applications. The woman told me the lace part could be bought in the city of Suzhou, since Shanghai apparently didn’t this type of lace. I was supposed to get some pictures of different lace later in the week. I paid 400rmb upfront.

I didn’t receive the lace pictures even after I asked for them. During the next weekend we picked up CCs suit from the market and at the same time we visited my dress tailor. They hadn’t even made the skirt part, which was said to be the simple one. So we had to come back the following weekend again. This time she wasn’t at the market when we came before ten and after calling her she showed up some 20 minutes later with the first part of the dress.  I tried it on and some alterations needed to be done, but the top was still not done.

After we let them know that they need to start working faster, we got some pictures of lace that didn’t match the picture at all. The fourth weekend in a row we showed up in the tailor market and the top was done, but it didn’t look like it was supposed to. The fabric was not lace and there were no pearl applications. The top was also too small and we didn’t have more time to wait for them to fix all their problems, so we demanded my money back. Good that CC could argue with her in Chinese, because tailor shops don’t usually give the money back as they already have some expenses. She tried to offer the skirt part for a lower price, but I didn’t have any use for it without the top. Luckily I got my money back, but we wasted so much time on making this dress. 

Mekko-räätälit

Kävimme jälleen kerran räätälimarkkinoilla, taitaa olla jopa neljäs viikonloppu putkeen. Ajoimme autolla keskustaan, ja mukana oli CCn sisko, hänen poikaystävä ja poikaystävän isä. Kävimme ensin isommilla räätälimarkkinoilla hakemassa heidän puvut ja mekon. Olimme paikalla jo ennen yhdeksää, joten kaikki paikat eivät olleet avanneet. Sillä aikaa kun odotimme, ehdin käydä ostamassa kaksi huivia ja kaksi koristetyynyliinaa. Ajoimme vielä pienimille markkinoille, jossa minun mekkoni oli. Liike ei kuitenkaan ollut yhdeksän jälkeen vielä avannut. Soitimme myyjälle, joka siihen aikaan oi vielä nukkumassa. Hän saapui 20-minuutissa paikalle, mutta pääsin vain kokeilemaan ensimmäistä osaa. Mekkoon kuuluu myös pitsi toppi, jota he eivät varmaan ole edes aloittaneet tekemään. On Saturday we went for the fourth time to the tailor market. We drove to the city and had CCs sister, her boyfriend and the boyfriend’s father with us. First we went to the bigger tailor market to pick up their suits and dresses, but as we arrived so early, before nine o’clock, most places hadn’t even opened up. During the wait I bought some pillowcases and scarfs. After this we drove off to the smaller market, where I had ordered a dress to be made. This place was also closed, but when we called, the seller came after twenty minutes and I could try on the dress. It wasn’t finished, so next week I have to go back for the fifth time..

Viikonloppuna kävimme räätälimarkkinoilla, jotka sijaitsevat Yu Yuan Gardenin lähistöllä. Minun oli tarkoitus teettää kahdet shortsit, mutta matkalla katselimme myös muita vaatteita. Olemme osallistumassa kahteen tai kolmeen häihin tänä vuonna, ja CClle ja minulle pitäisi teettää juhla-asut. Katsoimme pukuja kahdessa paikassa, ja toisessa tilasimme jo puvun. Puku maksaa 75 euroa, ja se tehdään melko hyvästä Kashmir – puuvilla kankaasta. Kymmenen päivän päästä on ensimmäinen sovituspäivä, joten saapa nähdä mitä siitä tulee. Kävimme parissa paikassa kysymässä paljon kahden puuvilla shortsien hinta on, mutta ne olivat liian kalliit mielestäni. Lopuksi muutin mieleni, ja menimme samaan paikkaan, jossa aikaisemmin olen teettänyt shortsit, ja tilasin yhdet shortsit ja yhdet pitkät housut. Shortsit tehdään samalla tavalla kun edelliset, mutta fuksian-punaisella kankaalla. Pitkät housut taas tehdään vaalean-punaisella kankaalla. Hinnaksi tuli 37 euroa kahdesta parista. Lisäksi ostin kangasta kahdesta paikasta, josta voin sitten itse ommella jotain kivaa.

                                                                                                                                                               

During the weekend we visited the tailor market near Yu Yaun Garden.  We were supposed to order only two pairs of shorts for me, but we ended getting a suit for CC as well. We are going to attend two or three weddings this year, so we both need to make some better outfits. We visited two tailors who made suits and decided to make on at the second place. The suit cost 500rmb, and we chose a model from a one of the booklets. The fabric should be pretty good cashmere – wool. It will be ten days until the first fitting. I also checked out some places making dresses, but didn’t order anything, as it will be cheaper to get many dresses from one place. Before next time I will look up some pictures with dresses that I would like to have. We also asked a couple of tailors how much linen shorts cost, but most of the places were too expensive. We ended up going to the same place, that we last time ordered my shorts and pants at, but we had had a bad experience with them.  Hopefully this time everything goes smoothly and I will get a pair of shorts and pair of pants. Together the pans will cost 250rmb, which was 50rmb less than if I would have liked two pairs of shorts.

Lauantaina kävimme räätälimarkkinoilta hakemassa valmiit vaatteet, jotka tilasimme viikko sitten. Kaikki olivat onneksi valmiit ja ainoastaan CCn housut piti korjauttaa. Ensin menimme South Bundin räätälimarkkinoille. Toisessa kerroksessa olin teettänyt kaksi teepaitaa. Paikan myyjä ei kuitenkaan löytänyt paitojani hetken etsiskelyn jälkeen ja pyysi minua tulemaan takaisin kymmenen minuutin jälkeen. Kävimme sillä aikaa kolmannesta kerroksesta halemassa farkkuni. Farkkuliikkeessä oli toinen länsimaalainen väittelemässä myyjän kanssa siitä, että hänen farkut eivät olleet valmiit, vaikka niiden olisi pitänyt olla valmiina sinä päivänä. Lopulta asiakas lähti tyhjin käsin, sillä lupauksella, että hän voisi farkut parin tunnin päästä noutaa. Minun farkkuni olivat myös jossain ihan muualla, sillä myyjä hävisi jonnekin vähäksi aikaa. Hän palasi minun mallifarkkujen kanssa, jotka olin viime kerralla jättänyt kopioitavaksi, ja teetetyt farkut löytyivät liikkeestä. Pystyin ahtaassa sovituskopissa vetää farkut jalkaan ja ne olivat todella hyvin kopioitu. Harmi vain, ettei kangas ollut yhtä hyvä kuin alkuperäisissä. Pitää siis jatkossa pitää silmät auki mikäli vastaan tulee pehmeätä farkku kangasta. Ainoa asia mikä farkuissa ei ollut hyvä oli nappi, jonka he olivat käyttäneet, sillä se on ehkä turhan pieni. Mutta onneksi sen voi vaihtaa ja samalla voisin lisätä muita metalli osia farkkuihin. Alakerran teepaita paikka oli löytänyt vaatteeni. Musta paita oli melko täydellinen, mutta beige oli ehkä parisen senttiä lyhyempi, kuin mitä olin tilannut. En myöskään voi sanoa, että kaikki saumat olisivat hyvin tehtyjä, tai edes suoria, mutta käyttökelpoiset teepaidat ainakin sain!

Kävellen lähdimme Shi Liu Pu markkinoita kohti, ja matkalla oli paljon myyjiä, jotka olivat levittäneet kankaita kadulle. Arvelen, että heiltä saisi kangasta todella halvalla, mutta en nyt tiedä kannattaako kadulta sitä nyt mennä ostamaan kun markkinoiltakin halvalla saa. Toisella räätäli markkinoilla sentään housumme löytyi ihan liikkeestä. En ollut selittänyt tarpeeksi hyvin viime kerralla, ja shortsit jäivät ilman vyötä. Muuten olen lopputulokseen tyytyväinen. Vähän pidemmät lahkeetkin olisi voinut olla, mutta näilläkin kelpaa mennä ulos kesällä. Voisin jopa teettä toisen väriset ensi kerralla, sillä pellava shortsit toimivat aina kaikkien vaatteiden kanssa. Niin kun olin jo arvannut, CCn housut eivät olleet niin kuin hän oli kuvitellut. Ongelma oli helposti korjattavissa, ja saimme housut postissa jo maanantaina. Ongelmana oli se, että housuja ei voinut kokonaan avata, vaikka niissä oli vetskari. Räätäli oli tehnyt vyötärön kuminauhalla koko vyötärön ympäri ja vielä ommellut joustovyötärön päälle napin, jonka olimme hänelle antaneet tilauksen tehdessä. Siis haloo, totta kai housut pitää voida kokonaan avata, eihän me muuten nappia oltais annettu? Ihan toinen asia olisi, mikäli me olisimme halunneet nimenomaan verkkarit, jossa ei ole vetskaria tai nappia. Jonkin ajan väittelyn jälkeen housut saatiin korjattua. Lopuksi kävin ostamassa kolmea eriväristä mokkakangasta, josta sitten joskus teettä takit.

                                                                                                                                                               

Last Saturday, we went back to the fabric markets to pick up our tailor made clothes. All of them were finished and only one pair of pants needed to be altered. The alteration was quick, since we received the pants in the post two days later. We started off by going to the South Bund tailor market. I went first to the shop that made my t-shirts, but after not finding them in the shop, the seller asked me to return in ten minutes. I headed to the third floor were my jeans were. There was another person in the shop arguing over some jeans that should have been ready today, but the tailor hadn’t finished them. After the customer left empty handed, I also had to wait for the seller to run and fetch my jeans from an unknown location. I was able to try the new jeans on in a small dressing room. The jeans were great copies of my original ones, but the fabric wasn’t as super soft. I should also change the button and add some metal pieces to make them even better. When I went back down stairs, the seller had managed to find my t-shirts. The black one was pretty good, but the beige one was maybe 2cm shorter than I had asked for. The seam isn’t the straightest one, but both shirts are wearable and super soft as I had bought the fabric from another store.

Next we headed over to the Shi Liu Pu market where we had two linen pants. My shorts were great, even though the belt I had asked for was missing. No big deal, since they had provided my shorts with some strings to tighten them up if needed. On the other hand the pants CC wanted had a problem. Instead of making the front of the pants normal with a button and a zipper, the zipper had been used, but not all the way up and an elastic band waist made opening up the pants completely impossible. To finish of the tailor had sewn the button on top of the elastic waist line. After some five minutes of arguing, with the seller saying that this is what you ordered and us saying why would we provide you with a button if you don’t use it. In the end we won and the changes were made without any extra payments. From the same market I bought three different colored suede fabrics to make some jackets in the future. Over all I’m happy with all of my tailor made items and this was kind of a soft start to see what they make and how much it costs. 

Räätälimarkkinoilla

Olen viettänyt pari viimeistä päivää googlaamalla, että mitä räätälimarkkinoilla kannattaa tehdä, ja mitä ei, ja paljon eri tuotteet maksavat. Lauantain aikana tuli käytyä kahdessa eri räätälimarkkinoilla. Ensin kävin hiljaisemmassa ja vähemmän tunnetussa Shi Liu Pu markkinoilla, jotka olivat kävelymatkan päässä Yuyuan Gardenista. En ole aikaisemmin käynyt näillä markkinoilla, ja heti huomasi, että täällä on paljon vähemmän ihmisiä kuin mitä muilla markkinoilla on. Kellarikerroksessa oli melkein ainoastaan kankaita, ja harmittaa, että jätin ostamatta mokkakangasta, joka maksoi metriltään kuusi euroa. No ensi kerralla sitten sitä ostamaan. Kankaita löytyi joka lähtöön ja erityisen paljon (teko)nahkaa oli tarjolla. Kolmessa ylemmässä kerroksessa oli enemmän räätäliliikkeitä.

Kävimme yhdessä liikkeessä kysymässä, paljonko maksaa pellava housujen ja shortsien teko. Olin kotona piirtänyt shortseista kuvan, jotta heillä olisi jonkinlainen käsitys minkä malliset halusin, mutta CClle tarkoitetut housut, niillä ei ollut mallia. Shortsit maksoivat tässä paikassa 30 euroa ja housut 37 euroa. Kaupat jäivät tekemättä ja jatkoimme matkaan. Kiertelimme ja katselimme mitä oli tarjolla ja ostin matkan varrella puuvillakangasta kahta teepaitaa varten. Samalla tuli käytyä juttusilla kahden farkkuliikkeen myyjän kanssa, etsiessäni minun super pehmeiden farkkujen vastaavaa kangasta. Pehmeätä farkkukangasta ei kuitenkaan tältä markkinoilta löytynyt.

Sen sijaan löysimme pellavaräätälin, joka suostui tekemään shortsit ja housut hintaan 45 euroa. Valitsimme ensin kankaan, ja molemmat halusivat mustan ohuen pellavakankaan. Sitten otettiin mitat. Viimeiseksi annoin vielä ostamani napit ja vetskarit myyjälle ja sitten piti selittää vielä kiinaksi soperrellen, että haluan vyön shortseille. Hetken tuli selitettyä, ennen kuin toivottavasti sekä myyjä että CC ymmärsi mistä oli kyse. Saapa nähdä tuleeko vyö tehtyä vai ei. Vaatteet ovat valmiit viikon kuluttua, sillä menen mieluimmin kokeilemaan niitä paikan päällä, kuin että ne tulisi postissa, ja joutuisin uudestaan käymään markkinoilla, mikäli niissä olisi jotain korjattavaa. Pitäisi vielä lisätä, että pellava liikkeellä ei ollut liiketilaa, vaan sijaitsi keskellä käytävää. Onneksi mitat sai suht nopeasti siinä mitattua, mutta mitä tapahtuu ensi kerralla kun shortsit pitää kokeilla keskellä käytävää ihmisten pyrkiessä ohi?

Kävelimme jonkin aikaa kunnes saavuimme South Bundin räätälimarkkinoille. Paikka oli aivan täynnä ihmisiä, suurin osa oli ulkomaalaisia, ja arvaisin heidän olevan turisteja. Olen käynyt täällä kerran aikaisemmin, mutta silloin en saanut mitään tilattua, sillä kolmessa kerroksessa on aivan liike tarjolla ja minua ahdisti käydä tilaamassa, kun en tiennyt mitä halusin. Tällä kertaa laukussa oli mukana farkut ja teepaita, jotka halusin kopioitavaksi, joten nyt oli tarkoituksena ainoastaan löytää räätäli, joka osasi ommella puuvilla tai farkkua. Kävin monessa liikkeessä, jossa valmistettiin stretch materiaalista vaatteita, mutta harva oli ommellut mallivaatteet hyvin. Ne jotka olivat tehneet mallikappaleet hyvin, sanoivat kopioivansa noin viiden euron maksavan teepaitani hintaa 27 euroa. Aivan järjetön hinta. Lopulta jätin puhumatta englantia ja puhuin ainoastaan kiinaa, ja yksi paikka lupasi tehdä kaksi teepaitaa ostamallani kankailla hintaan 15 euroa. Tämäkin oli paljon kalliimpi, kuin mitä olin kuvitellut, mutta mikäli lopputulos on hyvä, ei se hinta kovin paha ole.

Lopuksi löysin vielä hyvän farkkuräätälin, jolla ei ollut super pehmeätä kangasta, mutta melko lähellä. Hänellä kuulemma on ollut samanlaista aikaisemmin käytössä, mutta kaikki haluavat sitä, ja kangas loppui heti. Valitsin mustan kankaan. Täälläkin mitat otettiin, vaikka hänelle sentään jätin vanhat farkut malliksi. Hinnaksi tuli 24 euroa ja maksoin puolet hinnasta ennakkoon, niin kuin myös muissa liikkeissä. Myyjä oli todella ystävällinen ja mikäli lopputulos miellyttää, käyn mielelläni jatkossakin hänellä teettämässä farkut. Kaikki vaatteet ovat viikon päästä valmiit, joten saapa nähdä mitä he ovat saaneet aikaisekseen. 

                                                                                                                                                                    

I have spent the last few days looking up on google what to make in the tailor markets, what to avoid and how much it costs. Saturday was spent going from one tailor market to another one and ordering five pieces of clothing. We started off by going to the less known Shi Liu Pu Cloth Market that is nearby Yuyuan Garden. The market wasn’t crowded, which suited me just fine. The basement floor had lots of fabric and I regret not buying a great suede fabric that cost only 40rmb per meter. The basement also had some great leather, mostly faux leather on sale, that I should take closer look at next time. 

The upper floors had tailors but also fabrics could be found and I bought some cotton for two t-shirts.

We were looking for a tailor that made clothes out of linen. I had made a sketch of a pair of shorts that I wanted that would help the tailor understand what I wanted, but CC wanted to order pants without any picture. The first shops would have done the shorts and the pants for 450rmb, even though you can haggle here, I didn’t feel satisfied with the price, so we moved on. We found another place that took our order for 300rmb. We chose the fabric, a black thin linen fabric for both bottoms. The shopkeeper took our measurements and I provided her with the buttons and zippers I had bought earlier that day from the material market. I paid 200rmb first and 100rmb will be paid next time. The clothes we ordered should be finished next week and I will rather go there and try them on and see if they fit, than just ask them to send them in the post.

After this we walked for a while until we reached South Bund Fabric Market. This market had a lot of people, especially western tourists. I have been to this market once before, but that time I didn’t order anything as there were too much to choose from. Three floors provide a tailor for any material. This time I had with me the t-shirt and jeans that I wanted to copy, so I just needed to find a jersey and jeans tailor to make my orders.  Finding a stall that could make good seems on stretch material was hard to find and those that I eventually did find told me that copying my not-so-expensive and not-so-hard-to-make shirt would cost 180rmb. Unbelievable. Finally I found a place that would copy the t-shirt and make two shirts out of the material I provided for 100rmb. A lot more expensive than I had imagined, but hopefully the result is good.

I also found a tailor specialized in jeans, that didn’t have the super soft jeans material that I was looking for, but pretty close. The seller was nice and after choosing a black jeans fabric she took my measurements. I provided her with my old jeans that the tailor would copy. She didn’t start off with some really expensive start price, but instead gave me direct the price of 160rmb, that I accepted. Also this one would take a week before I could come and pick it up. I hope the result is great, because I would really like to continue doing business with this seller. Next weekend I can go and pickup my items and I hope they are even somewhat near the original one. 

Uudenvuoden mekko

Pari viikkoa sitten käydessäni Science & Technology markkinoilla, kävin tanskalaisen tytön kanssa teettämässä mekot. Räätäliosasto ei ole kovin iso, paikalla on ehkä noin kaksi - kolmekymmentä räätäliä. Kävimme parissa liikkeessä katsomassa heidän kuvastot läpi. Vaikka löysimme, jotain kuvissa hyvältä näyttäviä pukuja, päätimme silti jatkaa etsimistä. Yhdessä räätäli-liikkeessä olisi ollut paljon mekkoja minun makuuni, mutta niiden teettäminen olisi kestänyt kymmenen päivää, ja uuteen vuoteen oli silloin viisi päivää. Harva paikka teettää mekkoja, vaan miesten pukuja saa kaikkialta. Löysimme lopulta paikan, joka saisi mekot tehtyä ajoissa. Menimme heidän kuvastot läpi, eli kuvissa voi olla ihan tunnettujen merkkien vaatteita tai sitten kuvat ovat jostain kopioituja. Harvalla oli kuvissa heidän omia mekkoja, eli periaatteessa heillä ei varmaan ole kaavoja näyttämistään mekoista, ja ainoastaan kuvan perusteella he mekot teettävät.

Oli vaikea päättä minkä mallisen mekon haluan, sillä niitä ei voi kokeilla mitenkään, ja miten mallit sitten lopulta istuu, on vaikea ennalta tietää. Koska emme olleet muutenkaan mitään räätälillä aikaisemmin teettänyt, emme tienneet miten hyvän laatuisia mekoistamme tulee. Meillä oli niin paljon huolia ja koska hinta oli alussa lähemmäs sataa euroa, päätimme jatkaa matkaan. Liikkeen nainen kumminkin juoksi peräämme ja saimme lopulta sovittua hinnaksi noin 65€. Ensin mekkooni valittiin kankaat. Mietin ensin ottavani harmaan tai sinisen, mutta jostain syystä päädyin beige-kulta sävyyn. Kangaspalanäytteitä oli melko paljon, mutta ajattelin, että nude-mekko sopii melko hyvin kaiken kanssa. Tämän jälkeen otettiin mitat ja lopuksi sovittiin mitä kristalleja ja timanttisomistuksia käytetään. Maksoimme vielä 1,30€, jotta mekot tuotaisiin hotellillemme. Tarkoituksena oli, että mekot tuodaan maanantai-aamuna.

Minulla oli tietenkin sinä aamuna koe, joten vähän stressasi miten mekkojen noudossa käy. Vasta yhden jälkeen kiinalainen soitti kertoakseen jotain mekkojen vastaanotosta, mutta hän ei pystynyt englanniksi selventämään mitä haluisi ja lopulta hän sanoi soittavansa kohta uusiksi. Ei sitä soittoa tullut ja neljän aikaan menimme hotellimme respaan, jotta respasta joku voisi soittaa ja kysyä missä mekot viipyvät. Tämäkään ei auttanut ja emme vieläkään tienneet missä mekot olivat tai milloin ne olivat tulossa. Tietenkin heti kuin päätin meneväni suihkuun, minulle soitettiin ja sanottiin, että mekot olivat nyt koululla, mutta ne piti hakea kolmannen portin luota, eli ihan väärästä paikkaa. Yritin soittaa tanskalaiselle tytölle, mutta hän ei vastannut ja toinen tanskalainen ei ollut koululla. Sain lopulta tytön kiinni, ja selitin, että hänen pitää mennä mekot itse hakemaan.

Tästä seurasi kauheat sähläykset, kun ensiksi tanskalasinen ei lähettiä löytänyt. Saadessani hänet uusiksi kiinni hän kertoi olevansa sisällä yhdessä kampuksen rakennuksissa. Tanskalainen, joka seisoi rakennuksen edessä ei tiennyt missä se oli… Löytäessään rakennuksen hän ei löytänyt sisään.. Ai että kun alkoi hermostuttaa, joten soitettuani edes takasin kolmisen kertaa päätin mennä hänelle näyttämään missä sisäänkäynti on, vaikka hiukseni olikin läpimärät ja olin sairastelun jälkeen melko huonossa kunnossa. Tanskalainen oli lopulta saanut mekot haltuunsa ja tapasimme puolivälissä. Huoneissamme kokeilimme mekkojamme ensimmäistä kertaa. Minun mekkoni istui ihan hyvin, ja koska en ollut odottanut mitään ihmeitä mekko oli ihan hyvän näköinen, mutta ei oikein hintansa arvoinen. Tanskalainen oli valinnut melko haastavan mallin ja hänellä oli melko paljon toiveita miltä sen pitäisi näyttää ja istua. Lopputuloksena oli liian iso mekko ja muutenkin malli oli ”väärin” tehty kuvaan verraten. Minulla oli siis melko onni mekkoni suhteen, mutta mikäli siinä virheitä olisi ollut, helposti sen voi mennä korjauttamaan.

A couple of weeks ago I went together with a Danish girl to get dresses tailor made for new year's eve at Science and technology market. The tailoring section isn't that big and since most of the shops only makes suits we didn't have lots of places to look for dresses in. We stopped by some stores and looked through their catalogs. One place had really nice dresses, but it would have taken ten days for them to make them and we only had five days on us before New Year. We found a place that could make the dresses in the right amount of time, so we looked through the pictures they had.  Most places didn't have pictures of what they actually had made, but instead pictures of designer dresses. So I wasn't too sure they would be able to execute the dresses they way the looked in the pictures. 

I found a couple of dresses I liked, but since you can't try on anything I didn't know what model would fit me. We had never even before made anything tailor made, so the quality of their work was also questionable. We didn't agree on the price so we decided to go to another place. In the end the seller came after us and agreed on the 500RMB we were willing to pay. I still think it was pretty expensive, since the other Danes got suits for 400RMB. I chose a dress that was long in the picture, but I wanted it to be shorter. After this I had to choose which color of fabrics I wanted it to be made of. At first I thought about making it in gray or navy blue, but I ended up choosing a nude-gold color combo of two fabrics. After the fabrics were chosen the tailors took my measurements and the last thing was to agree on what kind of rime-stones they could use on the dress. We paid an 10RMB extra, so that they would bring the finished dresses to our school. They assured the dresses would arrive on Monday morning.

I had a exam that day, so I was a bit nervous about how we were supposed to get the dresses since they only had my phone- and room number. At one o'clock a Chinese girl called and said something about the dresses. She couldn't explain what she meant and told me she would call back later. She never called so at four we asked our hotel receptionist to call them and ask when our dresses are coming. This didn't help either. Of course the second I decided to take a shower, a man called and told me he had the dresses and was waiting at gate three, which wasn't even the right place. I couldn't do much at that point so I tried to call the Danish girl, but she didn't pick up. I called another Dane, who wasn't at the hotel. I got so stressed out, but finally got hold of the girl and I sent her to pick up the dresses. 

The Dane couldn't find anybody at the gate, so I had to call the guy again to ask where he was. Turned out he was in one of the buildings nearby, but the Dane couldn't find the building. When the building was found she didn't find the room he was in. After calling both om them back and forth for twenty minutes I had to go out without drying my hair, even though I was pretty sick still. During the time I got there the Dane had got the dresses and I could return back to the hotel. I hadn't expected to much, so the dress actually looked pretty nice. It even fit somehow, but the Danes dress was too big and the cuts were terribly wrong. I'm actually not surprised since the tailors can't make a perfect dress based on a small picture of only the front of the dress.
