Eslite bookstore

CC keksi, että menisimme jonnekin, jossa emme aikaisemmin ole olleet. Suuntasimme siis kohti Suzhoun kaupunkia, jossa minulle entuudestaan tuntematon kohde sijaitsi. Matka sinne kesti noin pari tuntia, ja suuntasimme Suzhoun teollisuusalueelle. Päädyimme Expo-alueelle, ja luulin jo että menemme katsomaan jotain messuja. Selvisikin, että pääkohteena oli Eslite niminen kirjakauppa. CC tiesi, että tykkään katsella ja ostella kirjoja, joten hän päätti yllättää viemällä minut suuren kirjakauppaan. Eslite kirjakauppa on aivan omaa luokkaansa, kun vertaa Kiinan kirjakauppoihin. Todella suuri, siististi sisustettu ja paljon kiinnostavia kirjoja. Englanninkielisiä kirjoja oli aseteltu vähän mihin sattuu, mutta minua kiinnostivat halvemmat kiinankieliset ruokakirjat enemmän. Monet kirjat maksavat vain viitisen euroa, kun vertaa länsimaalaisiin kirjoihin, jotka olivat halvimmillaan yli kymmenen euroa. Monet design kirjat olivat lähemmäs 70euroa, mikäli ne olivat englanniksi. Kirjakaupassa oli myös paljon muita tarvikkeita myynnissä ja jopa design tuotteita. Suurin yllätys oli kyllä ruokatarvikkeet, jotka olivat esillä ruoka-kirja osastolla. Olin myös innoissani löytäessäni pohjoismaisia dekkareita kiinaksi. Olisin mielelläni antanut Liza Marlundin kirjan CClle, mutta se oli vain kantoninkiinaksi, eli toisin sanonen vaikeammilla merkeillä, ja teksti luetaan oikealta vasemmalle. Onneksi vastaan tuli Stieg Larssonin kaksi ensimmäistä teosta, joten saapa nähdä mitä CC sanoo pohjoismaisesta kirjallisuudesta.

CC came up with the idea to take me to some place I have never been to before. Therefore we drove to Suzhou during the week to a destination I had no clue about. We arrived in a large shopping mall with a book store named Eslite. It is a famous bookstore chain from Taiwan, and it was much better than any of the stores I have been to before in China. It was modern, clean, and there was a lot of room. It is also funny how people are allowed to sit down and read the books, so need to buy them, just like a library. However, a large part of the books are in plastic, to prevent people from destroying them while reading them without buying. There were some English books here and there, but I was more interested in Chinese cook books. We actually got one for making salads and one for baking, both cost just some 30rmb. The prices are so low when comparing to what western books usually cost. I was also fascinated by the Nordic detective books section. I found a Liza Marklund book I wanted CC to read, but it was in Cantonese.. Instead I bought Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series first two books, as they were written in the more simple Mandarin Chinese. I also had to add that the bookstore was in a way quite interesting, as they had placed food items next to the cookbook section!

Viime kesänä käydessämme M on the Bund ravintolassa syömässä, huomasin heidän myyvän omaa kalenteriaan. Ajattelin, että onpas jännä kirja täynnä kaikkea erikoista, vähän niin kuin aikuisten aarrekirja. Olimme jo kesäkuussa, joten viime vuoden kalenteri jäi sitten ostamatta. Kävin vasta eilen Madame Mao’s Dowry –kaupasta kalenterin viimeinkin ostamassa. Kalenteri on aivan omaa luokkaansa ja sen myötä maksaa myös huikeat viisikymmentä euroa. Kalenteri on iso ja painaa ihan kauheasti, mutta jaksoin silti se paperikasissa shoppailla vielä tunnin lisään. Koko sen ajan ollessani ulkona, pelkäsin kassin repeävän jossain keskellä suojatietä, mutta onnekseni se pysyi ehjänä.

Kotona pääsin viimein selailemaan kalenteria. Vaikka se on nimeltään päiväkirja, se muistuttaa enemmän kalenteria. Vuoden jokaiset viikot on jaettu erillisille aukeamille. Paljon tilaa kirjoittaa mitä päivän aikana on tullut tehtyä ja tulevista tapahtumista. Jokaisella kuulla on myös erilliset sivut jonne mm. numeroita ja nimiä voi listata. Mikä tekee tästä kalenterista erikoisen, on se, että joka kuu eri ihminen on suunnitellut kuun ensimmäisen sivun. Jokainen sivu on aivan uniikki, ja siellä voi avata luukkuja, kuunnella ääniä, silittää pintoja, vaikka mitä. Tammikuussa aukeaa maalaus. Helmikuussa on lampaan vuosi, ja voin kuunnella lampaan ääniä ja lukea hauskan version tutusta lammas laulusta. Huhtikuussa oli mukana tee-se-itse essu, eli muovisesta paperista voi leikata itselleen essun. Kaiken kaikkiaan kalenterissa oli mukana kolme cd levyä, paljon reseptejä, runoja ja laulun sanoja, esiin viikattavia osia, pieniä kirjoja, postikortteja jne. Mielestäni tämä on siis ihan huikea pöytäkalenteri, josta joka kuu löytyy jotain uutta ja hauskaa. Materiaaleja on käytetty runsaasti ja sen myötä jokainen sivu näyttää ja tuntuu erilaiselta.

                                                                                                                                                                  

Last summer, when we were dining at M on the Bund, I saw them having on sale their own calendar. Since it was already summer, I decided not to buy it, but wait for next year. Next year came and I still didn’t find the time to go and get it, until yesterday. Luckily they sell the calendar elsewhere than just at their restaurant, so I could get it from Madame Mao’s Dowry. The calendar cost 350rmb, but it was worth it since it is just one of a kind. It weighs a lot and I was afraid the paper bag it was in would break at any moment, but to my relief it managed through a couple of hours until I reached home.

As the pictures show, the calendar is full of all kinds of fun and crazy stuff. Every month has been designed by a different person and it shows. Some are more into art, showing a painting, as others have music as their team, including three CDs. There are some recipes, lyrics to songs, poems, pictures of different places, small books, lots of things to fold up etc. It is like a treasure book for adults. All weeks of the year have separate sides and lots of space to write down what is happening. All in all, the M diary is just a lot of fun and a great table calendar.

Näin tämän kirjan ensimmäistä kertaa Garden Book Storessa, mutta sillä se maksoi noin 40 euroa, niin se sai jäädä kauppaan. Se tuli myös vastaan toisessa kirjakaupassa, mutta sielläkin se oli vain muutamia euroja halvempi. Tämä siis tarkoitti, että etsin kirjan käsiini taobaosta, eli suurimmasta nettikaupasta, ja sieltä se löytyikin postikuluineen noin kahdellakymmenellä eurolla. Kirja opettaa hauskalla tavalla muistamaan kiinalaisia merkkejä. Merkkien alkuperästä kerrotaan ja näytetään miten ne yhdistetään muihin merkkeihin. Tunnistan melko hyvin merkkejä, mutta toisaalla niiden kirjoittaminen muistista on melko hankalaa.

                                                                                                                                                                  

I saw this book for the first time in the Garden Book Store, but as it cost about 280rmb, I decided to look for it somewhere else. Another book store wasn’t much cheaper so I ended up searching for it on Taobao, where I found it for 120rmb in Chongqing. The book teaches Chinese characters in a funny way that hopefully makes me remember them more easily. On the other hand my problem isn’t recognizing characters, but writing them out of memory. The book tells about the origin of the characters, as most of them are pictograms and how the character can be combined to make another word.

Neljä päivää meni siihen, että kirjoittelin koulutehtävää. Tehtävänä oli kirjoittaa aineesta ” Chinese Stock Market – Structure and Developments 2000 – 2015”. Yhteensä viisitoista sivua tuli tehtyä, mutta ennen kun siihen vaiheeseen pääsin, ajattelin, että voisin kiertää kaupungin kirjakaupoissa katsomassa, mikäli löytäisin kirjan tällä aiheella. Kirjan haku ei tuottanut tulosta tälle tehtävälle, sillä englanninkielistä kirjaa löytynyt mistään. Toisaalle kävimme ensimmäistä kertaa Garden Book nimisessä kaupassa, jossa oli paljon kirjoja, mutta myös mukava kahvila. Tämä kauppa oli minun suosimaani Foreign Book Storea paljon kalliimpi. Esim. kiinan kieltä hauskalla tavalla opettava kirja maksoi Garden Book storessa 250rmb ja toisessa paikassa 175rmb. Englanninkielisiä kirjakauppoja ei kaupungissa paljon ole, joten ymmärrän, että he voivat nostaa hintoja ihan miten itse haluavat. Kerroin poikaystävälle ennen kuin lähdimme, että käväisemme kahdessa kirjakaupassa ja lähdemme sitten kotiin. Hän arveli, että tämä kestäisi varmasti vain noin kolmekymmentä minuuttia, mutta hänpä ei tiennyt, että kirjakaupat olivat noin kolmen ja puolen kilometrin päässä toisistaan. Eli keskustassa tuli käveltyä noin nelisen tuntia, kun emme ottaneet sitä suorinta tietä, vaan kävimme matkalla muissakin kaupoissa.   

                                                                                                                                                                 

I needed to write an essay on the topic Chinese Stock Market - Structure and Developments 2000 - 2015, so I figured I could find a book in one of the book stores in the city about the topic. After four hours walking and stops at two English speaking book stores, I still hadn't found a book. Instead we had a nice walk from Jing An metro to Garden Book store. Garden Book store had a nice cafe and a great selection of books, even though most of them where more expensive than at foreign book store. From there we continued walking along Huaihai Lu until we reached some shops that we wanted to look around in. From there we crisscrossed some roads until we arrived at Foreign Book Store, that also nowadays have a cafe inside. We had to leave pretty quickly and go home as the four hour walk was a bit too much for my boyfriend who assumed the trip would last about thirty minutes.

Torstaiaamuna lähtiessäni tunnille vastaan tulivat tanskalaiset, jotka olivat juuri palanneet baarista. Juuri kun International Accounting tunnin piti loppua, opettaja jakoi meille yllätys pistokokeen. Minähän en ole edes avannut kirjaani.  Kaikkialla oli lukenut, että ei tunneilla saa koskaan kotitehtäviä, joten päättelin siitä, ettei pistokokeitakaan tule olemaan. Saa nähdä saanko edes yhden tehtävän oikein.. Kerrankin olisi pitänyt mennä baariin keskellä viikkoa, joten olisi tarvinnut osallistua kokeeseen.

Koulun jälkeen otin bussin Century Avenuelle ja sieltä jatkoi kaupunkiin metrolla. Kävelin Nanjing Roadilta kolme korttelia Fuzhuo Roadille, jossa sijaitsee noin viisi isoa kirjakauppaa. Ainoastaan yhdessä kaupassa on vain englanninkielisiä kirjoja, joten ostin sieltä pokkareita luettavaksi. Olisin halunnut ostaa myös lehtiä, mutta Ellet ja Marie Clair –lehdet maksavat enemmän kun Suomessa ostaessani. Ostin lopulta kaupasta kaksi Liza Marklundin kirjaa, sekä Lauren Weisbergerin Revenge wears Prada että Kevin Kwanin Crazy Rich Asians. Kirjakaupan nimi on Foreign Language Bookstore, ja olin jo aikaisemmin ostanut sieltä Shanghai matkaoppaan. Kaupassa on ainakin neljä kerrosta ja heillä on laajavalikoima matkaoppaita ja taiteeseen liittyviä kirjoja. Kiinassa on normaalia, että ihmiset istuvat käytävillä lukemassa kirjoja. Vaikka jokaisessa kaupassa on paljon vartioita, vartijat eivät hätistä heitä ulos. Monet kirjat ovat sen takia melko kuluneita, koska moni on ehtinyt lukea tai selailla ne läpi. Varmasti monen paikallisen mielestä kirjakauppa on sama kuin kirjasto.

As I walked to my International Accounting lecture in the morning I met the Danish students who were coming back from the bar. Now afterwards I feel like I also should have gone to the bar, since during the lesson of that day the teacher handed out a surprise quiz. I don’t think it went well at all since I hadn't even opened my book. I was also really surprised since I had red that you don’t get almost any homework in the school, so why would they have quizzes in that case either.

After the lecture I took a bus to Century Avenue, from where I continued by metro into the city center. From Nanjing road I walked to Fuzhou road, where at least five major bookstores are located. I went through them all but I finally chose to buy some pocketbooks from the Foreign Language Bookstore. I bought two Liza Marklund books, as well as a book called Revenge wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger, she also wrote the devil wears Prada book, and a book called Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. I was also looking for magazines, but the cost more than back in Finland, and I think the prices in Finland is already outrages.
