Papercutting

Kiinan kulttuuri tunneilla opimme leikkaamaan paperista kuvioita, jotain jota kiinalaiset harrastavat etenkin uuden vuoden aikaan. Monessa paikka olin nähnyt hienoja paperikuvioita, jotka olivat joko kehystetty tai sitten ne kiinnitettiin ikkunaan. Itse asiassa en monella kiinalaisella nähnyt paperista leikattuja kuvia kotonaan, vaikka ne vaikuttavat olevan suosittuja. Ensimmäiset ostin Hangzhoussa ollessani ilta-markkinoilta. Illaksi pystytetystä kojusta löysin sekä hienon panda-aiheisen kuvan että suuremman kuvan, jossa oli riikinkukkoja. Hinta ei ollut mikään halvin riikinkukkojen kohdalla, mutta tykkäsin kuvasta sen verran, että oli pakko sekin ostaa. Kuvilla olisi ollut kehykset, mutta ostin ne ilman niitä, sillä kuljetus olisi ollut hankalaa. Toisen kerran, kun paperikuvia kävin ostamassa, oli Pekingissä ollessani. Pekingin oopperan jälkeen käväisin hotellin lahjatavara kaupasta ostamassa kaksi pinkistä paperista leikattua pandaa, joista yksi nostaa painoja ja toinen heittää seivästä. Vaikka pandoilla ei ollut mitään tekemistä oopperan kanssa, niin ne olivat sen verran hauskan näköiset, että halusin nekin omakseni. En toisin ole saanut kehystettyä näitä kuvia vielä.

During my Chinese Culture class we were taught about Chinese traditional paper cutting. We were also given the chance to try it during class. Paper cutting is especially important during Spring Festival, but to be honest I haven’t seen any being used by locals. Shops use to have both pictures in frames as well as those that are meant to be put up in windows. The first ones I bought in Hangzhou at the night market. I was drawn to the stand by a big picture of two peacocks. The price was a bit high, but since I didn’t take the frame I got it cheaper. I also ended up getting pandas gut from paper and I was impressed by both of the pictures detailed work and framed them back in Finland. I also got two pictures when I visited Beijing. After the Beijing opera act I bought two panda pictures from the gift shop. One was lifting weights and the other throwing a spear. The bright pink color and the funny characters has yet to be framed before I can put them up on display.

Kävelimme Leifeng Pagodan jälkeen koko matkan takasin hotelille. Tämä siis tarkoitti, että kiersimme järven eteläisestäpäästä pohjoisimpaan kohtaan asti. Matka meni mukavasti, vaikka tuuli oli aika kova. Oli onni, että olimme ottaneet veneen aamulla, eikä iltapäivällä, sillä minä en olisi enään näin tuulisessä säässä sen kyytiin mennyt.

From Leifeng Pagoda we walked from the south end of West Lake all the way to the north end. The walk was nice with so much to see, but it was really windy, and we were happy we had taken the boat in the morning as wind made some pretty large waves on the lake.

Vene vei meidät Yingzhou saareen, joka oli siis tullessamme aivan täynnä turisteja. Paikka on siis turistinähtävyys, sillä keskellä saarta on kolme järveä. Saari on todella hienosti tehty, ja keskiosaan pääse sekä kahta polkua pitkin että kahta siltaa pitkin. Sillat olivat kiinalaisittain sik-sak muotoisia, eli etteivät pahat henget jotka liikkuvat vain suoraan, pääse perille. Saaren keskiosassa olevasta turisti kaupasta tuli perinteinen kiinalainen sateenvarjo ostettua, että saisi jotain rekvisiittaa kuviin. Hinta oli merkitty tuotteisiin, mutta normaaliin tapaan tuli tingittyä ja puolet hinnasta tuli tiputettua. Syy tähän oli, että olimme varjon hintaa kysyneet muualta ja saimme sen siksi noin kolmella eurolla ostettua kun maksavat yli kuusi euroa. Kuljimme saaren polkuja pitkin tuhannen muun kiinalaisen kanssa kunnes saavuimme kolmen tunnetun pagodan luo. Nämä päärynänä muotoiset kaksimetriset veistokset, jotka ovat keskellä järveä, ovat kuvitettuna 1rmb seteleissä. Ne olivat kuitenkin niin kaukana rannasta, ettei hyvää kuvaa saanut otettua. Vietimme noin parisen tuntia saaressa kunnes menimme jonottamaan saaresta pois pääsyä eteläiseen rantaan menevään veneeseen. Tämä taisi olla se ruuhkaisin vene, mutta sillä veneitä saapui melko tiuhaan tahtiin ja kyytiin mahtui enemmän kuin kolmekymmentä henkeä, emme kovin pitkään onneksi odottaneet.

The boat took us to the largest island in the middle of West Lake named Yingzhou. It was full of tourists even though we arrived around ten o'clock. The man made island had three pools in it and the middle part could be reached by two paths and two bridges. The bridges were quite Chinese as they were zig-zaging their way to the middle island. This is done since evil spirits can only go straight, or so I have heard. From the shop in the middle I bought and umbrella to use in my pictures to have some props available. The price was 48rmb, but as usually we bargained and got it for 25rmb. This only worked since we knew other shops sold the same umbrella for the lower price. On the south side of the island is the biggest attraction, namely the three pagodas shaped like pears. They are set up in the water and are about two meters high. The reason for why they are known is that they are on the 1rmb note. After walking around the island for a couple of hours we went queuing for the boat going to the south shore. The queue was long, but it didn't take too long as the boats arrived quickly and over thirty people could go at once.

Olimme edellisiltana katselleet miten yksi veneistä ajoi Länsi Järvellä todella kovaan tahtiin kohti pieniä saaria, joten seuraavana aamuna päätimme mennä vene ajelulle. Lipun hinta oli noin kuusi euroa, ja ehdimme mennä veneeseen juuri ennen kun se lähti. Tämä siis tarkoitti, että kaikki ulkopaikat oli varattuja ja jouduimme sisällä änkeämään itsemme kahdelle vapaalle tuolille kiinalaisten joukkoon. Nähtävästi suurin osa oli turisteja, kun pieni poika tuli eteeni ja huusi isälle ” että kato valkoinen ihminen”, isä yritti hyssytellä poikaansa, ja luuli varmasti etten ymmärtänyt mitä poika yritti minulle sanoa. Laiva matka kesti noin 15 – 20 minuuttia, kunnes saavuimme yhteen kolmesta järvellä olevista saarista. Emme kahteen pienempään saareen päässeet, mutta enpä usko, että niiden temppelitkään mitään erikoisia olleet. Saaressa sai vierailla niin pitkään kun halusi, jonka jälkeen ottaa jokin saman yrityksen vene takaisin manterelle. Veneet lähtivät siis kolmeen eri paikkaan; pohjoiseen, itään ja etelään.

We the previous night we had been looking at some bigger leisure-boats going really fast towards some of the islands in the middle of the West Lake. Therefore the next morning we went to the north dock and bought two tickets for 55rmb each. The boat left almost straight away, which meant that it was already full. The other seats were taken, so we had to sit inside, cramped between Chinese tourists having their lunch on the tables and seats inside. The lake has three islands, and we visited only the one the cruise-boat went to, which also was the largest island. The ticket included both the boat ride to and from the island, so after we had finished exploring the island we could take any time a boat back to the shore. Three routs could be chosen from and as we had taken the boat from the north shore we ended up living the island with the boat going to the south shore.

Kävelimme Beili järven ympäri noin kolmessa tunnissa, eli päästessämme kävelytieltä saarelle oli jo pimeä. Saaressa sijaitsi paljon kahviloita ja muita liikkeitä perinteisissä kiinalaisissa rakennuksissa. Olihan se vähän outoa kun menee perinteisestä portista sisään ja joutuu Haagen Dazsin sisäpihalle… Matkalla oli jokin palatsi tai muu perinteinen rakennus, jonne olisi päässyt rappuja ylös kiiveten. Emme kumminkaan sinne menneet sillä pimeällä alueella kuulemma kummittelee.. Järven pohjoispuolelle saavuttuamme olimme jo ottamassa taxin hotelille, mutta päätimme jatkaa loppuun asti. Kävelytie järven ääressä oli kaunis, sillä sekä sillat oli valaistuttu toisella puolella järveä, että koko ranta pohjoispuolella. Valo antoi hienon hehkun järven ylle, jossa oli paljon kukkia.

We walked around Beili Lake in about three hours. As we arrived to one of the islands separating Westlake from Beili it had already become dark outside. The island had some cafes and shops located in traditional Chinese buildings and it was weird to walk into a traditional yard just to find a Hagen-Dazs located there. When we came to the north side of the lake we were about to take a taxi home, but decided against it and continued. The shore on the north side was beautifully lit so that the flowers in the lake could be seen in the dark. Also the two bridges we crossed on the way were nicely lit on the other side of the lake.

Kuuden aikaan lähdimme kävelemään Bai Causewayta pitkin, joka erottaa Länsi Järven Beili järvestä. Länsijärvellä liikkui paljon veneitä kun taas Beilin puolella ei ollut yhtään venettä. Moni kiinalainen tuli Hangzhouhun viettämään lomaansa, ja sen huomasi kyllä kävellessä. Kävely tie oli täynnä kiinalaisia jotka poseerasivat kuviin ja jalankulkijoiden seassa pyörät suhisivat ohi. Monikohan pyöräilijä on lentänyt kun eteen on yllättäen tullut joku joka haluaa ottaa kuvia katsomatta sivuille? Monet turistit olivat kävelykatua pitkin pystytetyistä kiskoista ostaneet tekokukkia, jotka he hiuksissa pitivät. Nämä olivat todella nättejä, mutta en koskaan itse löytänyt mitään todella hyvää asetelmaa, joten ne jäivät ostamatta. Mutta ajatuksena ne olisivat kuvissa olleet hyvät, sillä on se aika tylsää katsoa kuvia jossa on aina perus vaatteet päällä ilman mitään ekstra koristeita.

Around six o’clock we started our walk from the Broken Bridge and crossed the Bai Causeway that separates West Lake from Beili Lake. West Lake was full of all kinds of boats as Beili was completely empty but peaceful. The walkway was full with Chinese tourists coming to Hangzhou for the holiday. People walked all over the place taking pictures with cyclists trying to avoid crashing into the mass of people. In the north of Hangzhou is where the Baochu Pagoda is located on top of a hill. It makes a really nice packground for the Beili Lake landscape.

Hotelimme sijaitsi noin kymmenen minuutin kävelymatkan päästä Xihu, eli Länsi järven pohjoisrannasta. Iltapäivällä päätimme mennä katselemaan järveä, mutta menimme ensiksi syömään. Lähistöllä ei ollut tarjolla paljon ravintoloita, joten menimme ei niin halpaan, mutta hienoon ravintolaan. Tilasimme kolme annosta, joista yksi oli vihannes annos, jossa oli brokkolia, toisessa oli liha annos marinoitu hunajassa ja viimeinen oli perunamuusi sitruunakastikkeessa. Ensimmäistä kertaa olen muusin kiinalaisesta ravintolasta löytänyt, ja se oli pakko kokeilla. Annos oli kylmä ja melko makea sitruuna kastikkeen takia, mutta jälkiruokana melko hyvää. Ruokailun jälkeen ajattelin käydä vessassa ennen kun lähdemme kävelemään järveä katsomaan. Tuttuun tapaan, eli jos länsimaalaisia ei ole, ovet ja seinät vähenevät. Kahden kopin välissä oli siis onneksi seinä, mutta niin matalat ovet, että niistä hyvin pystyi kurkkaamaan yli nähdäkseen onko se varattu vai ei.. Näin siis melko hienoissa ravintoiloissa jopa..

Our hotel was located a ten-minute walk from the north shore of West Lake. In the evening we decided to go on a walk and visit the lake. Before we continued we stopped at one of the restaurants to have a meal. There weren’t too many places to choose from, but the one we went to was comfy and had a good range of food. It was maybe a bit more expensive as three dishes cost about 100rmb, when I’m used to pay 10-20rmb for one dish. We ordered broccoli, as the vegetable dish, a plate with meat marinated in honey and mashed potato with some kind of lemon dressing. This was the first time I stumbled across mashed potato in a Chinese restaurant, so I had to try it out. The dish was cold and a bit sweet, so it was more like a dessert. After we had finished the meal I went to the toilet that surprisingly followed the rule that the less westerns in the area, the less walls the toilet has. There were walls separating the two toilets from each other, but the door was so low that anybody could just peak over the edge of the door to see if it was empty or not.. Not the most comfortable place to go to.
