Viimeinen työpäivä illallisineen

Viimeinen työpäivä tuli ja meni viime torstaina. Perjantain piti olla viimeinen virallinen päivä, mutta sillä sinä päivänä sähköt eivät olisi toimineet, sain yhden vapaapäivän ennen kotimatkaa. Luulin, että viimeisenä päivänä ei tapahtuisi paljon, mutta se olikin todella kiireinen. Minulla oli kahdeksan 30-minuutin tuntia, kirjoitusopetustunti ja lisäksi piti siivota kone ja pöytä, käydä hakemassa nimikirjoituksia jokaiselta osastolta ja palauttaa tavarat oikeille henkilöille. Onneksi selvisin ja töitten jälkeen ajoimme Jinkelu ostoskeskukseen syömään. Valitsimme tällä kertaa Singaporelaisen keittiön. Tilasimme snack-lautasen, jossa oli kananvartaita, kevätrullia ja muita pieniä herkkuja. Satay-possu ei ollut hyvää, mutta laksa keitto oli maukas. Saimme itse kiehuvaan keittoon lisätä vihanneksia ja mereneläviä.

                                                                                                                                                                   

My last day at work was finally on Thursday. Actually, I was supposed to work on Friday, but to my big relief the building would turn of the power for that day, so my last day was moved up. I thought it would be a boring last day, but I was busier than I had expected. Lots if short classes and writing class in addition to cleaning my computer and workspace and doing some administration tasks before I could leave. After the hectic day we drove to Jinkelu, where we had some great Singaporean food. We ordered a snack platter, with ribs, chicken on spear, spring rolls and so on. The satay pork skin was not good but the laksa soup was tasty. We could add the seafood and vegetables in the soup on our own. The restaurant was packed when we arrived and quite big, but still comfortable. I’m happy it is easy to try out different food from different countries in this city. 

Singapore-ruokaa

Tässä vielä pari kuvaa siitä mitä Singaporessa tuli syötyä, ja sitten kaikki Singaporesta pitäisi olla jo mainittuna ennen kun jatkan Indonesian Baliin täällä blogissa. Ensimmäisenä päivänä teki mieli syödä intialaista ruokaa Little Indiassa. Enpä sitä tehnytkään, vaan päädyin syömään intialaista riisiä eri kastikkeiden ja naan leivän kanssa ION ostoskeskuksessa, sillä löysin intialaisen ravintolan alakerran ruokapuolelta. Orchard Centralissa minä kokeilin Laksa keittoa. Kalaliemeltä maistuvassa sopassa oli kananmunaa, katkarapuja ja jotain ituja ja leivän palasia. Vaikka täälläkin ruokakerroksessa olisi ollut vaikka kuinka paljon valinnan varaa pastoista dimsumeihin ja korealaisesta japanilaiseen, halusin kokeilla jotain Singaporelle ominaista ruokaa. Iltapäivällä kävimme vielä kolmannessa ravintolaosastossa, mennessäni syömään iltapalaa the Shoppes ostoskeskuksessa. Viimeinen paikka oli erikoisin, sillä keskellä oli luistelurata.

Here is still some pictures from what I ate in Singapore and then I can start working on my posts about Bali after this. On the first day I wanted to eat Indian food, so I ended up doing it in ION Orchard shopping mall food court. They had an Indian restaurant from which I got some rice with four different sauces and naan bread. It wasn’t the best Indian food I tasted, but it was easy and fast to order food in the food court. I even tried some Laksa soup in the afternoon in Orchard Centrals food court. I think they had the same selection of different food stalls, but I rather ate something Singaporean, than taking pasta or dimsum, or even Korean or Japanese dishes I could easily find anywhere else. In the evening we went for the third time to eat to a food court, as we went to the Shoppes mall. There I only had some fish and chips. This food court was the most special, with an ice-skating rink in the middle of the floor.

Viimeisenä ilta Singaporessa lähdimme ulos syömään perinteiseen Hawker centeriin. Eli ruokapaikkaan, jossa voi tilata eri annoksia eri kojuista ja syödä tuodut ruoat samassa pöydässä. Kävimme ensin katsomassa mitä ruokia löytyy, ennen kun menimme varaamaan pöydän pistämällä suomalaisen emänämme sukat pöydälle. Ruoat tuodaan numeroituihin pöytiin, eli pöytä pitää olla ennen kun menee tilaamaan. Tilasimme yhdestä kojusta lihaa riisin kanssa ja toisesta paikkaa nuudeliannoksen, joka oli niin tulinen, että puolet jäi syömättä. Menimme lisäksi ostamaan satay tikkuja ja mehuja toisesta paikkaa. Paikka oli sinänsä erikoinen, että paikka ei ollut katettu, vaan istuimme ulkona. Meren äärellä olevasta centeristä pystyi hyvin näkemään satamaan pääsyä odottavien laivojen valot.

On the last night in Singapore we went out to eat to a hawker center. It is a place where people can order from food from different places, but eat them together at one table. Fist we looked around what kind of food there was, but before we could order we had to have a table, so reserved one of the tables by putting the host’s socks on the table. We ordered a rice and noodle dish from two different places as well as some different satay sticks and juices. The place was pretty special, as it didn’t have a roof over the tables, instead we were eating outside. We could also see in the distance lights from ships waiting to board the harbor. 

Singapore Flyer

Koska emme menneetkään Marina Bay Sand hotellin ylimpään kerrokseen päätimme mennä kierroksen Singapore Flyer maailman isoimmassa maailmanpyörässä nähdäkseen kaupungin ylle. Ajatus oli hyvä, mikäli emme olisi niin korkeanpaikankammoisia. Pääsimme tyhjään koppiin, mikä oli ihan hyvä sillä ei kolmenkymmenen minuutin matkaa haluisi tehdä tuntemattoman kanssa. Kopista pitäisi kuulemma nähdä Malesian ja Indonesian puolelle asti, mutta me enimmäkseen katselimme alapuolella olevaa formularataa, Sands hotellia, Gardens by the Bay –puutarhaa ja merellä odottelevia rahtilaivoja. Kun olimme korkeimmilla, eli 165 metrin korkeudessa, uskalsin viimein mennä lasiseinän viereen ottamaan kuvia. Sitä ennen olin istunut penkin luona yrittäen kurkottaa kännykkää lähemmäs ikkunaa :D Peruslipun sijaan Singapore Flyeriin voi ostaa liput teema-koppeihin, eli siellä voi juoda Singapore Slingin tai viettää illallista. Koska paikan päällä ei ollut jonoa, otimme ihan peruslipun, vaikka olin aikaisemmin jo ajatellut juoma-ajelun olevan nopeampi tapa jonon ohi maksaessa lipustaan enemmän kun muut.

Since we didn’t go all the way up to the observation deck of Marina Bay Sands hotel, we decided to take a ride in the world’s largest observation wheel: Singapore Flyer. We got an own capsule, which was great, since it was nicer to be alone than share the space with somebody unknown 165 meters in the air. At first I didn’t dare go to the edge of the glass wall, but as we reached the top point I had to look around and see if Malaysia and Indonesia could been seen. From the flyer we could see pretty far away but the Gardens by the Bay, Sands hotel, formula track and ships on the sea where the most interesting to look at.  

Rennoissa tunnelmissa

Aikaisin aamulla kirjauduimme hotellista ulos ja lähdimme matkalaukun kanssa metsästämään taxia. Emme kuitenkaan aamuruuhkan aikana sellaista saaneet, joten jouduimme palamaan hotelille tilaamaan. Saimme oikein hienomman auton meitä hakemaan ja kymmenen minuutin ajomatkan jälkeen saavuimme hienolle kerrostalo kompleksi alueelle. Meitä vastassa oli ihana aamupala suomalaisen ystävän asunnossa. Aamupalan jälkeen siirryimme uima-altaan puolelle, kun isäntäpari lähti töihin. Löhöilimme aurinkotuoleissa jonkin aikaa kunnes menin vesikuntosalia kokeilemaan. Eli uima-altaasta löytyi kuntopyörä, juoksumatto, sekä muita kuntolaitteita. Uinnin jälkeen kävin vielä ihan normaalissa kuntosalissa käymässä ennen kun lähdimme taas kaupungille päin.

Early in the morning of our second day in Singapore we checked out from the hotel. With our suitcase we went out to look for a taxi, but it was an impossible mission in the morning rush. We returned to the hotel and got a nice car to drive us to our Finnish friend’s apartment. After a ten minute ride we arrived to a fantastic apartment complex. We were greeted by a wonderful breakfast and as the hosts went to work we went to take some sun by their pool. There was an aqua-gym that I tried out as well as the real gym before we went to the city for the last time.

Vesi- ja valoshown jälkeen kävelimme ostoskeskuksen läpi Marina Bay Sands hotelille. Emme oikein löytänyt millä hissillä pääse ylös Sky Park näköalatasanneelle, joten otimme yhden hisseistä ylös viiteenkymmeen-jotain kerrokseen. Tietenkin tämä oli vain hotellivieraiden aluetta, joten lähdimme takasin alas. Saimme jopa kuulla, että vain hotelli vieraat edes näkevät infinity uima-altaan, eli ihan turhaan olisimme maksaneet päästäkseen ylimmälle tasanteelle kun allasta ei saa nähdä. Löysimme tiemme toiselle puolelle hotellia, josta oli hyvät näkymät Gardens by the Bayn ylle. Tulimme juuri sopivaan aikaan, sillä Avatar-tapaisessa puutarhassa oli myös meneillään ilta-valoshow. Shown loputtua menimme vielä Shoppes –ostoskeskuksessa syömässä iltapalaa ennen kun otimme metron hotelille päin. Ajattelin, että menemme Stadium asemalle, mikä olikin huono valinta. Emme sieltä mitään taxia saaneet, ja onneksi parin kymmenen minuutin odottelun jälkeen mukava nainen tuli apuun ja tilasi meille taxin.

After the water and light show we walked through the Shoppes mall to Marina Bay Sands hotel. We didn’t find the elevator to take up to the Sky Park observation deck to see the infinity pool and views, so we took a random elevator up to the fifty-something floor. This was the floor from which hotel guest could get up to the pool, so we had to get back down. We were anyways told that only hotel guest could see the pool, so why pay for the view when we already had seen it. We got to the other side of the hotel were the Gardens by the Bay is located. If we would have had more time we could have visited the gardens, but luckily we at least saw the light show from afar. The avatar-like garden looks really special. As the show ended we went to the Shoppes to eat something before we headed back to the hotel. I thought it would be smart to get off on the Stadium metro station. But we ended up being the only people there and no taxis could be found. After looking for a taxi for almost thirty minutes a kind woman came to our rescue and called a taxi for us.

Olin etukäteen lukenut Etelä-Aasian isoimmasta ilmaisvesi- ja valoshow’sta, joka esitetään joka ilta kello kahdeksalta Marina Bayssa. Puolituntia aikaisemmin menimme puolityhjään ulkoilma katsomoon istumaan. Mikäli ei showsta tietäisi mitään, katsomoa ei varmaankaan huomaisi. Pikkuhiljaa katsomo alkoi täyttymään ja juuri ennen kello kahdeksaa paikka oli aivan täynnä. Show kestää noin kolmetoista minuuttia. Vettä ja valoa käyttäen lahdelle ilmestyi vesiseinämä jonka pinnalle heijastui kuvia. Musiikin tahtiin show oli todella taitavasti tehty, ja jopa tulta käytettiin tehosteina. Valo-vesi-show oli mahtava kokemus, ja koska se oli ilmeinen, ei ainakaan kaduta sinne meneminen.

I had read in advance about Southeast Asia’s biggest lightning water curtain show shown every night at eight pm in Marina Bay. Half an hour before the show we went to sit in the audience, even though there were almost no people there. At eight o’clock the audience was completely full, and people had to stand in the back to see it. The show is only thirteen minutes long. Only water and light is used to mirror pictures on a curtain of water out on the bay. The show is accompanied by music and fire. It was a great experience and since it was free, it was even better. 

Marina Bay

Orchard Roadilta otimme metron Marina Bayhin. Tulimme ulos metroasemalta tasan kello kuudelta, mikä oli onni, sillä vastaamme tuli mieletön määrä ihmisiä matkalla töistä kotiin. Metroasema on juuri ison businessalueen vieressä, joten vaikutti siltä kun kaikki lopettavat työnsä kuudelta. Olimme matkalla katsomaan kello kahdeksalta alkavaan vesishowta, mutta sillä olimme niin ajoissa Marina Bayssa, pidimme pienen lepotauon rantakävelyn vieressä olevissa aurinkotuoleissa.

From Orchard Road we took a metro to Marina Bay. We came out from the metro station at exactly six o’clock. I’m glad we didn’t come any later as a huge amount of people walked towards the metro. It seems like all the people working in the finance district ends their work at six and all of them wants to take that metro line back home. In other words we barely avoided the Singapore rush hour. We were on our way to the Marina Bays water show, but as we were so early we could take a break in one of the sun beds on the side of the boardwalk. 

Orchard Road

Little Indiasta jatkoimme kuuluisalle Orchard Road ostoskadulle. Kadun varrella on noin kaksikymmentä ostoskeskusta, joista noin viidessä ehdimme käväistä. Aloitimme ION Orchardista, jossa söimme ostoskeskuksen alimmassa kerroksessa olevassa ravintolakerroksessa. Ruokailun jälkeen kävimme ostoksilla mm. Forever21, Topshop ja Watson liikkeissä. IONista jatkoimme katua pitkin Ngee Ann City –ostoskeskukseen. Ulkona oli yli kolmekymmentä astetta mutta katua pitkin oli mukava kävellä kun kaikki oli niin puhdasta ja valtavat puut, jotka reunustivat ajotietä, antoi vähän auringon suojaa. Olin lukenut, että Japanilaisessa ostoskeskuksessa on iso kirjakauppa, jossa olisi hyvä valikoima lehtiä ja kirjoja englanniksi. Kirjakauppa oli niin iso, ettei päätyseinääkään näkynyt. Mikäli meillä ei olisi ollut edessä vielä neljä lentoa, olisin ostanut suuren määrän lehtiä ja kirjoja, mutta matkalaukku olisi samalla tullut liian painavaksi. Päädyin ostamaan kaksi LUX matkaopasta Singaporesta, sillä ne sentään eivät painaneet mitään. Kävimme vielä parissa ostoskeskuksessa, kunnes päädyimme Orchard Centraliin, jonka ylimmässä kerroksessa kävimme taas syömässä. Tiukkaa aikatauluani seuraten jouduimme siirtymään metrolla seuraavan nähtävyyden pariin.

From Little India we moved on with the metro to Orchard Road. It is a famous shopping street with around twenty malls. We started off in ION Orchard, where we ate in the food court. After lunch we bought some things from Forever21, Topshop and Watson. After ION we walked outside to Ngee Ann City. Outside was over thirty degrees Celsius, so it was always a relief to go inside one of the malls. I had red in advance that the Japanese mall would have a great bookstore, with lots of magazines and books in English. The bookstore was huge and the variety was great. Sadly I couldn’t buy too much from there as we still had four flights a head of us, and packing the suitcase full with books wouldn’t have been smart. We made it to some other malls as well until we reached the metro station. We ate in the nearby Orchard Centrals food court, before we headed for our last stop for the day.   

Little India

Olimme Singaporessa kaksi kokonaista päivää kun ei tulo- ja lähtöpäivää lasketa mukaan. Olin ensimmäiselle päivälle suunnitellut melko paljon tekemistä, ja aloitimme päivämme lähtemällä Little India –kaupunginosaan. Singaporessa asuu pääosin Kiinalaisia, Intialaisia, Malesialaisia ja Länsimaalaisia, ja kaupunki on jaettu eri osiin riippuen siitä minkä maalaisia alueella oleskelee.  Singaporesta löytyy siis myös esim. Chinatown. Päätimme mennä Little Indiaan, sillä Shanghaissa näen tarpeeksi kiinalaista kulttuuria. Saapuessamme alueelle en kyllä yhtään rakennuksista sanoisi aluetta Intialaiseksi, olin ehkä odottanut jotain enemmän. Alueen Intialaiset ravintolat ja liikkeet eivät olleet kovin erikoisia, mutta toisaalla liikuimme vain päätien lähistöllä. Olisin halunnut käydä syömässä intialaista ruokaa, mutta huomatessani, että ruoka syödään käsin ja paikat eivät olleet parhaimmasta päästä, päätin pidätellä nälkääni kunnes menimme metrolla paremmalle alueelle.

We had two whole days in Singapore. Therefore I had made for the first day a schedule, so that we would make it to three major sights during the day. We started our day by going to Little India, a district with lots of Indian restaurants and shops. As we walked along the main road, the buildings didn’t look at all Indian, as I had hoped for a more genuine environment. We could have also gone to Chinatown, but I assumed it wouldn’t look any different from Shanghai’s streets. At first I had planned on eating in one of the restaurants, but as I realized that hands were used instead of knife and fork, I decided to eat on our next stop. 

Fragrance Hotel Emerald

Saavuimme Singaporeen myöhään illalla, joten päätimme ottaa taxin hotelille. Taxikuski tiedusteli, mikäli tiesimme miltä alueelta olimme valinneet hotellin. Olimme kyllä tietoisia, että suurin punaisten lyhtyjen alue oli juuri hotellin lähistöllä, mutta halpoja hotelleja ei kylläkään Singaporesta muutenkaan löydä. Kuski ei edes oikein löytänyt oikealle kadulle, joten ilta hämärässä saimme nähdä lähikorttelit taxin sisältä. Eipä alue mitenkään pahalta vaikuttanut, vaan näimme enimmäkseen vaan halpoja ruokapaikkoja lähistöllä. Hotelimme Emerald kuului Fragrance Hotels ketjuun, joten lähistöllä oli melkein kymmenen samantapaista hotellia. Huone oli todella pieni, mutta tarkoituksena oli alun perinkin vaan kahden yön yöpyminen siellä, ja emmehän me Singaporessa ollessa vietä huoneessa paljon aikaa.

Hotelli oli noin kymmenen minuutin kävelymatkan päässä metroasemasta, joten pääsimme helposti kaupunkiin. Takaisin tulo hotelille oli taas vaikeampaa illalla päättäessäni kokeilla toista metroasemaa hotellin lähistöllä. Emme missään nähneet takseja, ja lopulta Singaporelainen tuli apuun ja tilasi meille taxin, kun emme pimeitä katuja pitkin halunneet kävellä hotelille.

We arrived in Singapore late in the evening by air, so we decided to take a taxi to the hotel. The trip didn't take too long, but on the way the driver wanted to make sure we knew to what district we were going to, as he didn't think the red light light district was suitable for us. We were aware of this, but as I had looked through hotels in Singapore in advance, the price and location of Fragrance Hotel Emerald was good for our purpose, which was only to sleep for two nights. The taxi driver didn't find the right road at first so we got a nice sightseeing of the neighborhood. The hotel surroundings consisted mostly of cheap restaurants, but we didn't visit any of them. It was only a ten minute walk from the hotel to the nearest metro station, so we could easily get to the city.
