Even though it hasn’t been widely marketed, the observatory of Shanghai Tower has been open for a while. Shanghai Tower is the newest and highest skyscraper in Lujiazui, and on top of that the second tallest in the world. Regardless, the observatory is the highest in the world, so that has to count for something, right? I thought we had picked the perfect day; sunny weather. It turned out sunny weather at 546 meters isn’t that ideal. The observatory was quite hot and the air wasn’t clear enough to see to the other side of the river even. In other words the visibility was poor and we could only see the skyscrapers next to us.

Compared to the SWFC, which is the second tallest tower next door, the Shanghai Tower observatory felt safer for people like me, who are afraid of heights, since it doesn’t have any glass floor. In addition, the building has a 360 degree view, while from the SWFC you can only look two ways. Overall the experience of going to the observatory is quite similar in both skyscrapers. Both start from the cellar, where there is some sort of exhibition. Then there is an elevator that speeds up to the top without making any stops in less than a minute. This means that the Shanghai Tower elevator’s fastest speed was 18 m/s. You don’t feel the speed in any other way than the pressure building in your ears.

I have to say that the Shanghai Tower was in that way much more boring, since it only offered a small shop and café, and only had one floor of access at the top. The SWFC had two or three floors that you could access and quite a large shop upstairs. Shanghai Tower did have a gift shop at the bottom, but it didn’t offer anything interesting. In the end a good reminder for anyone interested in going to the tower; take your passport or ID, since they will check it before letting you buy tickets. We had a Chinese woman in front who barely made it in, because she didn’t take any valid ID with her. 

Nyt on maailman korkein näköalapaikka koettu. Näköalapaikka sijaitsee 118. kerroksessa uudessa Shanghai Towerissa. Pilvenpiirtäjä on kuulemma todella ekologisesti rakennettu, sillä se mm. kerää sadevettä ja tuplalasien takia ei tuhlaa lämmitystä. Kyttäsin pitkään, että milloin meillä olisi aurinkoinen päivä täällä Shanghaissa. Sää ei kuitenkaan loppujenlopuksi ollut se paras, sillä yli 500 metrin korkeudessa oli melko pilvistä. Emme siis nähneet paljon muuta kuin viereiset pilvenpiirtäjät.

Näköalakerrokseen pääsi huippunopealla hissillä, joka kulkee nopeimmillaan 18 m/s. Matka huipulle kestää alle minuutin! Hissi on sen verran vakaa, ettei muuten kuin korvien ilmanpaineessa eroa huomaa. Shanghai Tower on SWFC verrattuna turvallisemman oloinen, sillä täällä ei ollut lasitettua lattiaa. Lisäksi tornissa oli 360-asteen näkymät, kun taas SWFCssä näki vain kahteen suuntaan. Muuten siellä ei oikeastaan ollut mitään sen kummallisempaa. Vähän kyllä harmitti näkyvyyden puute, mutta eipäs sille oikeastaan mitään voi tehdä. 

From Jingan to Peoples Square

Kävimme viime viikolla CCn kanssa keskustassa ihan vain muuten vaan viettämässä päivää. Otimme metron Jingan temppelille. Olen aikaisemmin halunnut käydä Jinganin puistossa, mutta siellä tuli käytyä ensimäistä kertaa vasta nyt. Puisto on suhteellisen pieni, mutta paljon hienoja patsaita ja värikkäitä kukkia teki siitä mielenkiintoisen. Puistokävelyn jälkeen suuntasimme kohti French Concessions aluetta, jossa kävelimme pitkin katuja, joilla en kovin usein aikaisemmin ole käynyt. Alkoi olemaan jo lounasaika, ja onneksi kiinalainen nuudelipaikka oli niin täynnä, että jatkoimme matkaan, sillä vastaan tuli Saksalaisen suosittelema vietnamilainen pikkuravintola. Saksalainen halusi viedä minut sinne syömään, mutta paikka oli kiinni viimeksi. Ravintolassa on tilaa alle kymmenelle hengelle, mutta onneksi heillä oli yksi pöytä ulkopuolella. Istuimme siis ihanassa kevät auringossa syömässä alueeseen verrattuna melko halpaa vietnamilaista riisiä ja nuudelia, sekä kupillinen inkivääriteetä.

Kävelimme K11 ostoskeskukseen asti, jossa en ollut aikaisemmin käynyt. Vaikka paikka näyttää erittäin kalliilta, niin kuin se onkin, niin löysimme paljon nähtävää. Aulassa oli paljon kukkia ja lintuhäkkejä, jossa papukaijat ja muut linnut istuivat laulamassa. Löysimme myös ravintolan, jolla oli oma kasvimaa sisällä. Jäimme odottamaan CCn ystävää Baker and Spice kahvilassa, jossa söimme palaset kakkua. Ystävän saavuttua, lähdimme yhdessä ostamaan samanlaisen Oneplus X puhelimen, joka CCllä jo on, hänen äidilleen. Olisimme samalla ostaneet kolmannen kännykän, mutta Euroopalla on oma versionsa, joten se pitää sitten netistä tilata. Kävelimme siis Jingan temppelin metrolta aina Peoples Squarille asti, ja matka ei tuntunut pitkältä, sillä matkalla oli aina jotain nähtävää. Vaikka sää oli loistava sinä päivänä, ilma taisi ollakin melko epäpuhdas, sillä saimme molemmat kurkut kipeiksi.

Last week we went to the city center to just wander around. We took the metro to Jingan temple, where we visited the nearby park. I have wanted to go there before, but never made it until now. The park is quite small, but makes up for it with statues and colorful flowers. From here we walked towards French Concessions. It was lunch time, and luckily a cheap noodle place was so full that we had to look for another place to eat. We then stumbled upon a Vietnamese place, that my German friend had wanted us to go to earlier, but at that time it was closed. The place can only hold less than ten people, but we were lucky and could sit outside at the only vacant table. We had some good fried rice, noodles and ginger tea in Vietnamese style.

From there we walked along some roads I haven’t walked on that much and ended up in the artsy and expensive K11 mall. The lobby had lots of flowers and birds in cages that made quite beautiful sounds. Upstairs we also found a restaurant with their own vegetable garden inside. We had some cake at Baker and Spice while waiting for one of CCs friends. When he arrived, we went and bought a new Oneplus X phone for CCs mother. I was supposed to buy one for my mother as well, but they have different systems for China and Europe, so it might be better to get it online. During the day we walked from Jingan temple all the way to Peoples Square. The weather was great, sunny and warm, but the air was probably quite dirty, as both of us got sore throats in the end of the day.

Monet länsimaalaiset, jotka Shanghaissa asuvat, asuvat joko keskustassa, tai sitten länsimaalaisella alueella. Monet saavatkin sen takia kuvan ”hienommasta” elämästä Shanghaissa. Itse olen yksi harvoja, etenkin nyt kuin saksalaispariskuntakin muutti pois, joka asuu ihan kiinalaisten asuttamalla alueella. Kyllä tämäkin paikka ajan kuluessa muuttuu, varmasti jo ennen kesäkuuta, kun Disneyn ovet avataan, tästäkin paikasta tulee länsimaalaisempi. Yhtenä päivänä lähdimme CCn kanssa kävelylle ja otin samalla joitain kuvia matkan varrelta, jotta saisi jonkinlaisen käsityksen, millaisessa ympäristössä asun. Ajattelin jatkaa kuvaamista, sillä tämä on yksi harvoja paikkoja, josta löytyy vielä autenttista kiinalaista elämää Shanghaissa.

I live quite far away from the city center of Shanghai were you can eat and buy western food almost everywhere. Most western people have therefore settled in either in the city center or some community with lost of westerners. The only western people visiting this area are those staying the night to be close to airport. But this will change as soon as Disney opens. Until then the neighborhood is one of the few places in Shanghai were you can find really local and authentic Chinese living. The nearby areas have changed already quite a lot during the past two years, and I try to capture those places that are still typical Chinese.

Shanghain lähettyvillä on usea vanhanajan vesikaupunkia. Olen käynyt kahdessa, mutta päätimme ajaa Zhujiajiao-kaupunkiin, sillä se on tunnetuin. Vaikka kaupunki sijaitsee vain noin puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä, matka kesti ruuhkien takia paljon pidempään. Sisäänpääsy kaupunkiin on kuulemma parisen euroa, mutta sillä emme tulleet portin kautta, vaan parkkipaikalta, emme tarvinneet maksaa mitään. Kaupunki visiitti ei oikein mennyt niin kuin olin ajatellut, sillä itse käyn mielelläni katsomassa pari turistinähtävyyttä, vähän ostoksilla ja ehkä vielä syömässä jotain paikallista, tai vain nauttimassa teen. Reissu tehtiin CCn, hänen siskonsa ja siskon miehen kanssa, ja he eivät jaa samaa näkemystä hyvästä kaupunkikierroksesta. Toisin sanonen kävelimme vain kaupungin päästä päähän, ja siihen kului noin tunti. Eli käytimme tulo- ja paluumatkaan yli kolme tuntia ja kaupunki käytiin läpi tunnissa. Onneksi sentään yhtä ohutta leipää tuli sentään maistettua. Minua erityisesti viehätti talot, jotka oli maalattu värikkäästi tai muokattu uudemmaksi pilaamatta vanhaa tunnelmaa. Myös kukka asetelmat kaduilla ja pienten liikkeiden sisustukset olivat hienot.

There are quite a few ancient water towns nearby Shanghai. I have been to two of them, and now we chose Zhujiajiao, the most famous one as our next destination. The town was an hour and half away by car, but the trip lasted somewhat longer due to horrific traffic jams along the way. As we finally arrived the town was not crowded as winter and middle of the week is not the high season. The perfect city trip for me would be to see some sights, do some shopping and have lunch or a drink. But not with these people.. I made the trip together with CC, his sister, and the sister’s husband. They preferred just walking through the town as quickly as possible and that was it. The town was quite nice, especially the houses that were painted in some cool colors or in other ways had been made modern without losing the traditional Chinese style.

CCn piti lauantaiaamuna ajaa äitinsä ja pari hänen ystävää Hongkouhun, eli keskustan lähettyville alueelle. Kun nyt sinne asti ajettiin, päätimme käydä paikassa nimeltä 1933. Paikka on tuttu Running Man nimisestä tv-sarjasta, mutta muuta en paikasta tiennytkään. Rakennus on vanha teurastamo, joka on muutettu ostos-ja ruokailu-kohteeksi. Suurimmaksi osaa ihmiset siellä vaan kuvasivat erikoista rakennusta. Söimme lounaan Ferrari omistajien klubi nimisessä paikassa, jossa oli sisustettu formula 1 teeman mukaan. Paikan päällä ei ollut montaa ravintolaa, mutta ainakin yksi muu ravintola tarjosi melkein saman menun, eli heillä oli yhteinen keittiö. Tilasimme Macaolaisen hampurilaisen, spagetti bolognesia, sipulirenkaita ja sienikeittoa hintaan kolmetoista euroa. Lounaan jälkeen kiertelimme rakennusta ja ihmettelimme sen erikoista tyyliä. Rakennuksen ulkopuolelle oli kerääntynyt iso määrä Ferrareja, Lamborgineja ja muita erikoisia ja kalliita merkkejä.

                                                                                                                                                               

On Saturday morning CC had to drive his mother with some friends to Hongkou, so we seized the moment and went to a place called 1933 during the same trip. 1933 is a former slaughter house that has been transformed into a shopping, dining and entertainment complex. The building is most famous for its unique style and lots of people wandered around taking pictures. We were quite hungry so we looked what some of the restaurants had to offer. Two places had almost the same menu, but the Ferrari owners’ club was more interesting, so I chose to eat there. The restaurant followed the Formula 1 theme with a car in the middle of the space and some other car related stuff on display and for sale. We had some spaghetti, hamburger, onion rings and mushroom soup for 90rmb. After lunch we walked around the place. Actually there was not much to see, but still it is an interesting place, when all the other major sights have been seen too many times. Outside the building lots of Ferraris and Lamborghinis, and other expensive cars were parked, so maybe there really was a club devoted to the owners, or then they were just there for display?
