Shaolin Kungfu

 

Olimme kaksi päivää Luoyangissa, joten toisena päivänä lähdimme aikaisin matkaan kohti Shaolin Temppeliä. Temppeli sijaitsee toisessa kaupungissa, joten jouduimme ensin ottamaan bussin keskustan bussiasemalle, jossa vaihdoimme suurempaan bussiin, joka vei meidät Dengfeng kylään. Matka kokonaisuudessaan kesti noin kaksi ja puoli tuntia. Matkalla näimme kung fu kouluja, jossa pienet lapset harjoittelivat pihalla. Shaolin temppeli oli kauhea turistirysä. Paljon ihmisiä ja munkit möivät turistikrääsää kojuissaan. En nähnyt melkein yhtään aitoa munkkia treenaamassa, vain ainoastaan etukäteen tehdyt esitykset. Esitykset eivät sinänsä olleet huonoja, vaikka olin lukenut, että ne olisivat. Esityksissä näytettiin kung fun eri tyylilajeja ja myös yleisöstä kolme pääsi lavalle näyttämään taitonsa. Esitysten jälkeen menimme temppeliin, jossa oli niin paljon ihmisiä, ettei kunnon kuvia saanut oikein otettua. Temppeli oli samanlainen kun kaikki muutkin jossa olin käynyt, joten ei mikään erikoinen. Temppelistä jatkoimme matkaan vielä Pagoda metsään, missä kuolleet munkit on haudattu. Paikka oli ihan kiva nähdä, sillä se on niin tunnettu, mutta menisin mieluimmin autenttiseen kouluun katsomaan heidän harjoituksia.

We spent two days in the city of Luoyang, so on the last one we decided to go Shaolin Temple in the nearby city of Dengfeng. We took a bus to the main station where the transferred into a bigger bus. The trip all in all took two and a half hour. On the way there we saw some authentic kung fu schools and the children training outside. The Shaolin temple wasn’t what I had expected. There were massive tourist groups and even the monks where selling overpriced touristy stuff in small shops. I didn’t see that many children training, which I had been looking forward to, but instead we attended two of their shows. The shows were actually pretty good and they gave an introduction to the skills that they learn in the school. The temple was a disappointment, and looked like all the temples I have seen before. There were lots of people which made taking pictures a nightmare as everybody was in front. We also visited the Pagoda forest, which is the burial site of past monks. It was nice to visit the site, but I’m more interested in seeing an authentic school, and not as touristy as this one.

Temppeli oli osa Longmen Grottoes kokonaisuutta ja sijaitsi itäisellä kukkulalla. Pääsy temppeliin oli hankalaa, sillä se oli niin korkealla, että moni käveli takaisin alas, kun ei jaksanut ylös asti kiivetä.

The temple was part of the Longmen Grottoes and was located on the East Hill. Lots of people didn’t go to see it as it was high up on the hill and walking up all those stairs was horrible. On the other hand this made the area pretty peaceful when no groups of tourists went there.

Oli taas aika karsia kolmestasadasta kuvasta vain ne näyttämisen arvoiset blogiin, mutta tänne jäikin aika suuri määrä näkemästämme Longmen Grottoes –alueella. Paikka sijaitsi bussilla noin viidentoista minuutin päässä hostellista. Koska menimme iltapäivällä, paikalla ei ollut suuria määriä turisteja, mutta ei paikka sentään hiljainenkaan ollut. Esillä on kymmenentuhansia Buddha veistoksia, joista suurin osa omissa pienissä tai isoissa luolissa. Pienimmät olivat parikymmentä milliä kun taas isoin on seitsemäntoista metrinen. Oppaiden mukaan piti ensin kiertää Länsikukkula, jossa myös suurin Buddha on nähtävissä. Seuraavaksi joki ylitetään siltaa pitkin ja päädytään etelän puoleiselle kukkulalle, jossa oli myös luolia, mutta monet veistokset oli hävinnyt paikalta. Tästä matka jatkui vielä temppeliin ja lopuksi emme ehtineet viimeiseen nähtävyyteen, joka oli jonkun tunnetun henkilön hautapaikka.

Monet veistokset oli hajotettu, eli pää oli irrotettu, tai jos patsas oli noin metrin korkuinen, niin sitten se oli kokonaan irrotettu. Myös isoimman Buddha patsaan kädet on varastettu. Jäljellä oli kuitenkin suuri määrä hyvälaatuisia patsaita, joten paikka oli näkemisen arvoinen. Joen toiselta puolelta sai hyvän vaikutelman alueen ja luolien koosta, kun kokonaisuus näkyi kerralla. Olin lukenut, että kannatta odottaa, että iltavalot syttyvät. Tämä siis tarkoitti, että noin kahden tai kolmen tunnin kävelyn jälkeen jäimme iltapäivällä odottamaan, että alaksi hämärtää. Tämä ei tapahtunut yhtäkkiä, vaan istuimme odottamassa valo-showta melkein kaksi tuntia. En voi sanoa, että valot tekivät paikasta mitenkään paremman. Valoilla valaistutut patsaat saivat väriä, ja näyttivät siltä, miltä ne ennen vanhaan olivat, mutta olin kai odottanut jotain hienompaa. Sillä odotimme valoja sen verran pitkään, pääsimme alueelta pois vasta yhdeksän aikaan, tämä tarkoitti, että ehdimme viimeisellä bussilla, ja kaikki liikkeet olivat ehtineet mennä kiinni. Onneksi löysimme matkalla avoimen ravintolan, jossa söimme melko hyvää ruokaa ennen kun palasimme hostellille.

I had a bit of a challenge to limit down from 300 pictures to only some that are worth putting in the blog. I still ended up with quite a lot, but this gives a better picture of the Longmen Grottoes that we visited in Luoyang. The scenic area was only a fifteen minute bus ride away from our hostel. We visited the place in the afternoon, as we hoped there would be less people and anyways the day was so hot that we wouldn’t have liked to walk around in sunny thirty degrees weather. Longmen Grottoes have ten thousands of Buddha statues of various sized located in caves. The smallest ones are just 25mm, when the largest was up to seventeen meters. As the map at the entrance showed us, we started our roundtrip from the West Hill, where most of the caves and largest Buddha is located. There were some tourist groups in front of us that made it hard to get great pictures. After we had explores the better sights we crossed the river by a bridge and went looking at the Eastern Hill and its caves. Most of the statues on this side had been stolen, so there wasn’t much to see. Also the West Hill had had some damaged or stolen statues. For most part the head seemed to be missing, but e.g. the largest Buddha’s hands were missing.

We also visited a temple I write more about in the next post and the last sight we didn’t made it to. I had read that there would be a light show in the end of the evening, so we decided to stay. This was kind of a mistake as we had to wait for almost two hours before it got dark and the lights weren’t that spectacular. Some of the lights showcased colors of the statues in the past. As we waited for the light for such a long time it had become late and all shops were closed on our way back. We caught the last bus and got off on the wrong station. It wasn’t too bad, as we found a restaurant and had a great meal before we made our way back to the hostel.

Hostelli sijaitsi noin kolmenkymmenenminuutin matkanpäässä juna-asemalta, joten otimme taxin. Taxikaan ei perille ensiksi löytänyt, sillä sisäänkäynti oli sen verran piilossa. Hostellin olin etukäteen netistä varannut, sillä se sijaitsi lähellä Longmen Grottoes, eli nähtävyyttä, jonne olimme Luoyangissa ollessamme menossa katsomaan. Lisäksi hostelli oli bussi pysäkin vieressä, joten matkat sujuivat helposti. Hostelliin tullessamme virkailija kyseli, että olemmehan naimisissa, kun poikaystävän kanssa varasimme vain yhden huoneen.. Aika outo kysymys ollakseen hostelli, jossa monet matkustelevat pariskunnat asuvat. Emme huonetta heti saaneet, joten menimme ravintolan puolelle syömään. Paikalle ilmestyi kissanpentu, joka oli todella suloinen. Vessa käynnin jälkeen, poikaystävä tuli ilmoittamaan, että vessassa makaa valtava kissa, jota hän ensiksi ei luullut aidoksi. Hetken kuluttua paksu kissa tuli luoksemme löntystellen. Paksu kissa oli ihmeen ketterä ja nopea, ja aina tilanteen tullessa, yritti päästä pennusta eroon. Henkilökunta joutui aina menemään kissojen väliin, ettei pikkuiselle menisi huonosti. Kissoja oli hostellissa kiva seurata ja muutenkin paikka oli kaikin puolin mukava ja hintansa arvoinen yöpymispaikka, vaikka ei huoneessa ollut edes saippuaa.

Our hostel was located a thirty minute taxi ride from the train station. Is it wasn’t located in the city center, we were much nearer to the sight we had planned to visit that day, namely the Longmen Grottoes. The hostel wasn’t easy to find at first, but it was located next to a bus stop, which was convenient for us. At the reception I was asked if we were married, since they couldn’t understand how a couple in any other relationship could be able to share a room? After this question, the receptionist continued speaking only mandarin with my boyfriend. We didn’t get the room straight away so we went to the restaurant first to have some lunch. There was really cute kitten that sat in a weird way and looked at us with its large sad eyes all the time. My boyfriend also found a fat cat in the bathroom which he at first thought wasn’t real. The fat cat was really fast and tried to assumingly get rid of the kitten, when nobody was watching. The staff had to interrupt the fights whenever the fat cat attacked.
