Keraton Resort & Spa

Hotel swimming-pool overlooking the ocean in the back

Assorted Balinese deserts
Hotel sunbeds on the beach

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

For the last night we moved to Keraton Resort and Spa located on the Jimbara beach. At the hotel gate our van was searched for bombs and at the entrance a gong was hit to indicate new guests had arrived. We got welcome drinks and were showed to our room. The room was much bigger when compared to our cabin at Puri Tempo Doeloe. The hotel had a large pool and was also located right beside the beach. In the evening we ate at the hotel restaurant pizza, bananasplit and some assorted Balinese desserts. In the morning we could go to the buffet to have breakfast. This wasn’t too special at all, even though at the reception they asked everybody how the breakfast had been. It was raining the next day, so we just packed, took a taxi to the airport, from where we flew to Australia.

Ilmainen jalkahieronta

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Our hotel offered one free hot yoga lesson and one free foot massage session. We skipped the yoga and one morning we went to the reception to book the foot massage for later. The hotel receptionist asked at the same time if we would be able to move for one night to their second hotel, as they would like to start reconstructions on our cabin. As all expenses were taken care of we were happy to move to Keraton resort and spa, since it was a more expensive hotel at the Jimbaran beach. We still needed to do some shopping in Sanur so we walked to the beach to shop in the small beach shops.

After shopping for a couple of hours we returned to the hotel to have our massage. The spa was next to our cabin, and the we got the massage in front of open windows with a garden view. The massage was great and really relaxing, not painful as I'm used to when having foot massage. The spa was full of statues and small decoration objects so it was really nice.

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Our hotel consisted of a little over ten cabins for guest to live in. All of the cabins looked different and had different interior. As the cabins were traditional Indonesian houses gathered from different places the hotel area looked more authentic, and not so commercial. All the cabins had antique furniture mixed up with new electronics such as TVs. Two of the villas had their own pool but the rest of the hotel-guests could relax at a shared-pool. The pool was a bit small, but as most of the guests weren’t at the pool all the time, we could have it by ourselves a couple of times. The hotel garden was full of statues and other details that I discovered every day. It was at first a bit chaotic but in the end the garden was made into an interesting mix of styles. The hotel area also had a open-aired space were you could read magazines or books, a yoga-studio, a restaurant, as well as the reception and internet-room in their own separate cabins.

Eat Here, Diet at Home

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

We went a few times to eat dinner at our hotels restaurant. The first time I tried some French style mashed potato with beef, but already the next time I went for a more traditional nasi goreng dish. Also the deserts were excellent and after trying two sorts of chocolate cake and one lemon tart pie, we found the Love Cake to be the best of them all. The cake consisted of meringue topped with whipped cream, strawberries and some strawberry sauce. Fantastic. The restaurant was on its own pretty spectacular with so many details that it was fun to go there more than once. We even followed the restaurant motto: Eat here, diet at home.

Pura Tanah Lot

Ubudista matka taas jatkui noin puolitoistatuntia pienteitä pitkin ajellen. Oltuamme alueella jonkin aikaa palasimme kuljettajan luokse. Menimme vielä kolmiasteen syömään Sanurissa olevassa ravintolassa kalaa, ennen kuin palasimme myöhään illalla hotelille.

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

From Ubud we continued driving on small roads for one and a half hour more. The driver put on some really relaxing music, so I slept most of the way. Included in our trip was a visit to one of the holiest temples in Bali called Tanah Lot. The temple is built on an island or rock just outside the shore. So when the tide is low it is possible to walk to the temple. As we arrived to the site we only made it to a smaller temple out on a cliff before rain started pouring down. This time we had our umbrellas with us, but as they didn’t help much in the storm, we went under a roof together with all the other tourists on the site, until the rain ended. We were able to walk along the beach to the temple island, as the tide was low. However, tourists weren’t allowed into the temple. For us to be able to walk up the stairs for a little bit, we had to get blessed first, before the entrance guard let us up. First we washed our hands and face with some holy water. I almost drowned my mobile and money in the water as everything happened so suddenly. After this was done a priest gave us his blessing, but some rice on our forehead and a flower behind our ear, and then we were able to climb up the stairs a little bit higher than the rest of the crowd. After being on the temple site for a while we returned to our driver and started driving back to the hotel in rush-hour. It took forever to get back to Sanur, where we ate together with the driver in one of the restaurants some fish, before we returned to the hotel.

Ubudin keskustassa

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Our driver stopped in the center of Ubud next to a market. We only walked for a good five minute before it started raining heavily. We got stuck inside a small shop but we ran across the street to a small restaurant and had our dinner there as it continued to rain. The rain didn’t stop so we got pretty wet as we made our way back to the driver. We made it to some stalls, but we didn’t buy too much. Ubud is a village known by its artists in Bali, so paintings could be found everywhere.

Monkey Forest

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

After an hour’s drive we arrived in Ubud, were a monkey forest is located. It is not wise to bring any food, jewelry or other shiny things into the park as the monkeys might snatch it and run into the forest. Inside the park some workers gave out bananas and other fruits to tourists to feed the monkeys. We were also adviced not to hide any food as the monkeys will find it anyways. A woman hadn’t read this part as she hold on to her banana tightly as a monkey hold on to her bag to get the banana. The monkeys were really used to people, as they didn’t bother us, as we didn’t had any food to give. They also posed naturally and looked into the camera nicely. The forest had a temple that we went to, but before we entered we had to put sarongs on. After seeing the monkeys bathing place and graveyard we went back to our driver who was waiting for us and drove us into the village center.

Käsityöpajoja

Keskiviikkona tilasimme kuljetuksen päiväksi ja päätimme lähteä Balin keskiosissa sijaitsevaan Ubud kylään. Ubud on mm. Eat pray love elokuvasta tuttu.

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

On Wednesday we ordered a car to drive us around Bali for one day as we wanted to go to a village named Ubud, known from the movie Eat Pray Love. On the way our driver who spoke good English, wanted to know if we wanted to stop on the way to buy some local handicrafts. At first we weren’t too interested, but he stopped by a place making silver jewelry and a place, were eggs were painted. We also drove past villages making fabrics, kites and a lot of stalls on the way sold paintings.

Sanur -rannalla

Onnistuin kumminkin polttamaan koko kyljen lopulta.

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

We had ordered the hotel service to give us a free ride to the Sanur beach the day before, so at ten o’clock the next day our ride was waiting for us. We got in to the pink car, which had to take the long way to get to the beach. The beach was really nice with a well-made sidewalk that separated the beach from the small shops, restaurants and hotels on the other side. There along the way a lot of sunbeds for rent. They were different quality and different priced. In the beginning we were offered beds for about twenty euro together, but after walking a while we got them much cheaper. On the other hand we chose the bad kind of sunbeds with leather covers that made them extremely hot in the sun. It was anyways really hot outside, so I had to take sun underneath sun cover. Even though I did this I managed to burn one side of my body.. Luckily the sea was great to swim in as the coral reef broke down all the big waves. I also managed to burn my feet as I was walking on the sand barefoot to go for a swim, so that’s how hot it was on the beach.

Puri Tempo Doeloen aamupala

Aamupalan sai valita menuusta, eli ensiksi sai valita haluuko munakkaan, pekonia munan kera, tartine of the day, nasi goreng paistettua riisiä tai paistettua nuudelia.

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Our hotel had breakfast in one of its building that was styled in the same way as the rest of the hotel, which means it was full of details. I will make another post with more pictures later on. Before we went to breakfast we had to get a breakfast card from the reception. Every day we were handed the right card as we passed by so we never had to ask for our card. For breakfast we could choose every morning one of the following dishes scrambled eggs with tomato, bacon and egg, tartine of the day, nasi goring or mi goreng. All dishes were served with toast, and we could also add a croissant, chocolatine, pancake or more toast. Also coffee and tea was served and a glass of juice with fruit pieces in a bowl. We are more used to eating buffet-breakfast, but I found this serving style better and more colorful.

Lilla Warung

Some dogs barking outside their gate

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

The hotel was said to be a ten fifteen minute walk from the beach, so we took a map with us and headed for the beach. It wasn’t easy to find the right way as the streets were small and didn’t go straight to the beach. Instead the straight road went on forever before you could make a turn to the right. There were a lot of dogs outside gates, moped coming from all directions that made the short walk very interesting. But the locals were nice and greeted us in English as we passed by. We never made it to the beach and instead stopped by a restaurant named Lilla Warung. We ate some really good satay sticks with nasi goreng. As we came to the restaurant there was only one western man eating, but as we left the place was completely full with retirees from Europe.

Puri Tempo Doeloe

In Bali we stayed in a hotel named Puri Tempo Doeloe, which was located on the east costs Sanur area. At first I didn’t quite like the hotels small houses and the surrounding with so many details, but I got used to it during our stay. We were given the option to look at three cabins, before we chose which one we wanted to stay in. All of the cabins were different, and the one we chose had both separate beds and a bathtub, but on the other hand we got a smaller terrace. The great thing about the cabin was that shower and bathtub were separately, and not all in one, as it usually is.
