Pääkaupungin kaduilta kuvia

The main shopping street got busy in the evening
The hutong lane on which our hotel was located
It could get crowded on the lane if more than one car drove past
The shopping street was nicely decorated with fake-flowers

The tram seemed a bit weird as it only drove this street back and forth
I was surprised that even Beijing, known for its pollution, had a blue sky in the evening

Shanghai, jossa on enemmän moderneja rakennuksia. Pekingissä on paljon enemmän matalia taloja ja ns. hutong-katuja, jonka varrella on matalia taloja vierekkäin.

After all the day trips we made, we returned to the city center in the evening. In the city I could walk around and explore the shops and the surrounding streets. Beijing is more historical compared to Shanghai, which is more modern. Beijing has lots of Hutongs or lane houses that are pretty low as Shanghai is more known for its skyscrapers.

The Great Wall - Mutianyu

Viimeisenä päivänä Pekingissä lähdimme hotellin järjestämälle matkalle. Seitsemän aikaan aamulla minibussi tuli hakemaan meidät ja mukana oli englantia puhuva kiinalainen opas. Matkalla kyytiin tuli paljon erimaalaisia ihmisiä. Matka kesti noin kaksi – kolme tuntia.

Our hotel arranged a tour to the wall, so on the last day we woke up at seven to go to a minibus that would take us there. We had a Chinese guide, who spoke English with us and on the way to the wall the bus made some stops and picked up more people. The drive took about two-three hours as we went to the part of the wall that was less touristy, since it is further away from the city. As we arrived I realized I had to buy a ticket to a cable car to get up to wall. In case I didn’t want to take it, then the walk up would have taken too long. The cable car rise took five minutes and there weren’t too many people on the wall. We had three hours on us to explore the wall. I together with an American guy started walking pretty fast so we wouldn’t miss out on the 23rd tower and the view from there. In other words we started from the 14th tower, which means that it took about an hour to reach our destination.

The wall was pretty comfortable to walk at even though it was sunny and over thirty degrees. The hardest part was walking up the stairs to the tower with the best view. I had to take lots of breaks as I couldn’t manage to walk all the way up at once. The American stayed at that tower as I continued upwards. As I reached the next tower I had enough and turned back down. If I would have continued there wouldn’t have been a smooth path ahead as the rest of the wall hasn’t been updated. The walk back was also hard but I managed to catch up with the American and together we walked back to the cable cars. There were some sellers on the wall but as their prices were really high, I decided to buy water from the sellers that waited at the entrance. We had a meal together with the group and after that we had a weird drive back to the hotel. We stopped at some point and people started getting off and went to the subway and then we had to meet up with some other bus and so forth. But we got home and the trip was worth it.

Beijing Opera

Applying make-up before the actual show started
When the make-up was done the next step was to put on the costume

The final look
From the first part: The actor is sleeping in "the dark"
A combat sceen in "the dark" was well made and humorous

Scene from the second part: The princess having a discussion with her husband
Scene from third part: The concubine waiting for the emperor to arrive
The size of the screen as well as people sitting in the fron having dinner
The concubine had some good facial expressions during the time she got drunk

The end of the show
Pictures outside the show hall

We hadn’t planned on going to see the Beijing Opera, but as our hotel arranged tickets there every night to the show, we decided to go. The show was inside a large hotel and half of the guests were seated in the front enjoying dinner as the rest sat in the back. Most of the guests were Western, mostly Swedish. When we arrived there was a man on stage preparing his make-up. After he finished that another man came and helped him get dressed in a traditional costume. I thought he would be the main actor, but I was wrong since he didn’t appear after this. The opera was divided into three parts and the first one was an acrobatic show with two men pretending to be fighting in the dark and not knowing where the other one was. This scene was accompanied with music but no singing. The second part was a dialog between a princess and her husband. They sang out the dialog, which was humorous e.g. the princess said “why are you disturbing us when your son is pissing”. She had a doll in her arms and that sentence didn’t fit in at all in the topic they were discussing. The third part was about a concubine, who believed that the emperor was on his way to meet with her, but in the end he didn’t come so she got “charmingly” drunk instead. The audience could follow the story line from two large screens. I found the opera relay entertaining and it was nothing like I had expected it to be. I was positively surprised by this.
