Hillside temple

Vuoriretkellä löysimme aivan mielettömän paikan. Todella kaunis temppeli sijaitsi puolivälissä, ja kävimme katsomassa miltä se sisältä näyttää. Niin kuin monet temppelit Kiinassa, tämäkin oli jaettu kahteen osaan. Sisäänkäynnissä oli ensimmäinen jumalapatsas, jota isot, rumannäköiset patsaat vartioivat. Päätemppeli, joka sijaitsi paljon korkeammalla, sisälsi kolme valtavaa Buddha patsasta ja kahdeksantoista kiinalaista patsasta. Temppeli oli todella värikäs ja hienosti koristeltu. Löysimme temppelin takaosasta tärkeimmän patsaan, jonka edessä suurin osa kävi rukoilemassa. Temppeleissä löytyy tyynyjä patsaiden edestä, sillä kiinalaiset rukoilevat menemällä alas polvilleen, ja kumartumalla usein kolmesti patsaan eteen samalla kun he mumisevat jotain. Usein vielä kädet pistetään vastakkain katsoessaan ylös, ja alas kumartuessa kädet koskettavat lattiaa. Paljon muitakin rukoustekniikoita olen myös nähnyt.

The second stop on our hike up the mountain in Anqing was this beautiful temple area. I have visited many temples, but this was among the best ones. Maybe since there were almost no people. Like most temples, they have an entrance where one of the goods is seated in the center and some grotesque looking figures protect it on along the walls. The main temple, which is usually much higher, had three large Buddha statues and some 18 smaller Chinese statues. In the back of the temple we could find the main God. The temple was beautifully decorated inside, better than most. And it is a mix of so many different types of religions. I wonder if Chinese people even are aware of how many religions they have gathered inside one temple: Buddhism, Hinduism, and some local Chinese religions.   

Dalongshan Forest Park

Kiinalaisen uuden vuoden aikana kävimme päiväretkellä lähistön vuoripuistossa. Menimme vuorelle vuoden ensimmäisenä päivänä, eli silloin kuin suurin osa kiinalaisista pysyy kotosalla. Sää oli todella loistava, oli aurinkoista, mutta tuuli oli melko kova. Lähdimme siis koko perhe, eli kuusihenkeä kohti huippua. Matkalla näimme temppelin, josta lisään seuraavassa postauksessa. Matkan varrella oli kapeita portaita, kivimuodostelmia, ahtaita käytäviä, kivisiltoja, ja jopa vuoreen hakattuja rappusia. Retki ei ollut läheskään niin vaativa kuin Huangshan vuori, jossa kävimme CCn kanssa viime kesänä, mutta muuten ihan kiva. Meille kesti vähän yli tunnin kävellä ylös ja alas. Matkalla sai sitten ihmetellä kiinalaisten käyttäytymistä. Näkyi naisia, jolla oli korkeat korkokengät päällä, ja ihmettelen miten he selvisivät retkestä. Lisäksi näin naisen, joka heitti roskaa luontoon, vaikka metrin päässä olisi ollut roskis..

During Spring Festival we visited a mountain nearby Anqing. It was the first day of the New Year, so not that many people were doing the same thing as we. The weather was great, a bit too windy, but sunny. We hiked up the mountain and visited a temple which I will post about next. After the temple visit we hiked even further up. At some points the stairs were narrow and it was quite uncomfortable to have Ugg boots and not sneakers on. My bad. Anyways, there were lots of different rock formations and the path led us to some interesting places. Sometimes we walked inside small tunnels under large rocks and sometimes we walked on small bridges made out of stone. The hike was much easier than Huangshan, one of the most famous mountains in China, which we visited in the summer, but it was still somewhat challenging. Once again it was interesting noticing the behavior of Chinese people. Some women wore high heels, while visiting the mountain, like I said; it was already though with boots on, so I can’t imagine any one going up there with heels on. The second thing is the habit of throwing trash into the wild. There was a trash can just next to a women who decided to throw her trash into a bush..

Menimme kuun alussa Bengbu nimisen kaupungin lähettyvillä olevaan kaupunkiin seuraamaan CCn ystävän häitä. CC sai niin kuin aina hoitaa paljon kuljetuksia aamulla, ja itse osallistuin menoihin vasta siinä kymmenen aikaan aamulla. Tuttuun tapaan, sulhasen pitää hake morsian tämän kotoota, tai tässä tapauksessa hotellihuoneesta. Sulhanen ystävineen pyytää morsianta avaamaan oven ja hänen ystävänsä eivät salli tätä, mikäli heille ei ensin anneta punaisia kuoria, jotka sisältävät rahaa. Kovan työn tuloksena ja monen kuoren jälkeen ovi vattiin ja kappas vaan, morsian ei ollutkaan huoneessa. Jännä käänne olikin se, että hän oli mennyt piiloon toiseen kerrokseen, ystävän huoneeseen. No uudestaan koputtamaan, ja lisään rahaa hänen kavereilleen. Leikkien jälkeen, juhlakulkue hyppäsivät autoihinsa, ja noin kahdeksan auton letkassa ajoimme jokunen kortteli, kunnes saavuimme pariskunnan uuteen asuntoon. Saimme pienen lahjakassin saapuessamme perille, josta löytyi tupakkaa, karkkia, ja pyyhe, eli normaalit lahjat.

Asunnolla emme kauan olleet, vaan ajoimme lähistön ravintolaan, jossa olimme jo edellispäivänä syöneet illallisen. Juhlasalissa oli lähemmäs sata vierasta istumassa pöydissä. Länsimaalaiseen tapaan, morsian ja sulhanen kävelivät lavalle, sytyttivät kynttilöitä, kaatoivat samppanjaa laseihin, sormukset käteen ja pussailua jne. Tämän aikana kovalla äänellä ”speakeri” selosti miten he ovat täydellisiä toisilleen ja sen sellaista. Suurin ero suomalaisten ja kiinalaisten häiden välillä on se, että suomessa tunnelmä on rauhallisempi ja kiinassa taas huudetaan mikrofooniin täysillä ”tahdon” ja monesti jos ei huuda tarpeeksi kovaan, speakeri pyytää toistamaan. Vähän valoshowta ja musiikkia, ja loppuun vielä pariskunnan vanhemmat lavalle pitämään puheet. Tämän jälkeen meidät vietiin omaan yksityiseen huoneeseen, jossa sulhasen lähimmät ystävät olivat syömässä. Meitä oli huoneessa noin kymmenen henkeä, ja tarjolla oli suurimmaksi osaa samaa ruokaa kun päivä aikaisemmin. Toisin sanonen ymmärrän nyt ”rehearsal dinnerin” tarkoituksen, sillä olimme jo maistaneet ruoat päivän aikaisemmin. Pariskunta perheineen oli itsekin omassa, yksityishuoneessaan syömässä, mikä vaikutti jotenkin oudolta, sillä kuka ei omissa häissään halua nähdä vieraitaan? Jatkoimme ruokailun jälkeen kohti CCn kotikaupunkia, joten enpä tiedä mitä luvassa oli sen jälkeen. Ajomatka oli taas aivan kauheata, ja mikä olisi pitänyt olla noin 5h matka, olikin 8h tukkeutuneilla motareilla.

In the beginning of February, CCs good friend got married. That is the reason why we had to drive some 14 hours. The wedding was quite similar to the two weddings I had attended before in China. In the morning, or around ten o’clock, the groom goes and picks up the bride from her home, or in this case from the hotel room. The groom, with his friends, needs to bribe the bride’s friends to let him in. In my opinion, they had planned it quite cleverly, and the bride was actually in another room, on another floor. When they finally found her, they had some games before they could take her with them and drive to the couple’s new home. About eight cars drove after each other to the nearby condo. We didn’t spend much time there, but the couple seemed to have some traditional meal before we all left for the wedding banquet.

There were already some 100 people in the wedding reception. We followed the bride and groom do some westernized customs, such as light a candle, exchange rings etc. There was a speaker, who talked so loud my ears hurt. After some music and light effects the couple’s parent entered the stage and gave a speech. The thing I like the least is the shouting the couple has to do. When they say “I do”, it isn’t peaceful or romantic, it is more like a competition on who’s louder. After this we were ushered into a private room to have dinner. We had actually been to the same place the day before when we arrived in the evening, and had the exact same food. Now I know what rehearsal dinner stands for.. We didn’t stay after the dinner, but rather leave straight away and drive 8h to get to CCs hometown. Once again we got stuck in traffic for ages and it was one of the worst drives in my life! 

Pariisin matkalla

Lähdimme joulukuussa Pariisiin kolmeksi yöksi. Olimme varanneet jo ajoissa lentoliput Norwegianilata, ja lento meni melko hyvin. Löysimme lentokenttäbussin, joka vei meidät metroasemalle, josta jatkoimme metrolla asunnollemme. Olin löytänyt pienen yksiön läheltä Eiffel tornia Airbnb sovelluksen kautta. Emännän sisko otti meidät vastaan ja asunto oli juuri meille sopiva, keittiöineen ja suihkuineen, ja kaikki nähtävyydet olivat kävelyetäisyydellä. Metrokin oli aivan oven ulkopuolella, joka teki matkustamisesta helppoa.

Heti ensimmäisenä päivänä lähdimme kävelemään kohti Eiffel tornia, joka oli parin korttelin päässä. Eiffel tornissa kävimme vain ensimmäisessä ja toisessa kerroksessa, sillä kolmas olisi jo ollut liikaa. Tämän lisäksi ehdimme nähdä Arc de Triomphe –riemukaarin sekä päivällä että illalla, Louvren museossa vietimme kolmisen tuntia ja kaikki suosituimmat taideteokset näimme hyvin, Notre-Dame kirkon ja Sacre Couer basilikan katoilla saimme ihastella maisemia.

Hyvin ehdimme nähdä kaikki nähtävyydet, joista olimme kiinnostuneita, kahdella kokonaisella päivällä ja kahdella puolikkaalla. Tämän lisäksi ehdimme shoppaila, etenkin Pariisin halvoissa apteekeissa, josta ostimme kassillisen Ranskalaisia ihonhoitotuotteita ja vitamiineja. Ruokailla ehdimme myös, ja vaikka oli vaikeata löytää tyypillinen Ranskalainen ravintola, pääsimme maistamaan mm. crepsejä, etanoja, juustoja. Heräsimme aina siinä viiden aikaan aamulla, ja seitsemältä, kun kahvilat avasivat ovensa, lähdimme liikkeelle. Otimme croisantin mukaan ja istahdimme kahville jossain keskustan pikku kahviloissa. Leivoksia tuli syötyä aivan tarpeeksi, ja herkullisia macaroon-leivoksia veimme kotiin asti.

                                                                                                                                          

We went to Paris for three nights in December. We had booked airplane tickets early from Norwegian and the flight went quite well. We found the airport bus, which took us to the nearest metro station, and from there we continued by metro to our apartment. We had booked an apartment near the Eiffel tower from Airbnb. The hostess sister was waiting for us at the apartment which was perfect for us. It had a small kitchen and bathroom, but its location was great. We could walk to all sights, and the metro was just outside the door, so traveling was convenient.

As soon as we had settled in we took a stroll around the neighborhood and found the Eiffel Tower just around a couple of blocks. It was sunny on our first day so we went to the first and second floor of the tower. During our trip we had plenty of time to visit all the sights that we wanted. We went to the Arc de Triomphe twice, to see it both during day and night. In the Louvre museum we spent three hours to see all the most important pieces. We could get a great view over the city from both Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.

In addition to all the sightseeing we had time to do some shopping in the area. I especially liked the cheap pharmacies in the city from which we bought a bag full of French brand products and vitamins. Normally we got up at five in the morning but left the apartment at about seven when the cafes opened up. We had some croissants for breakfast and stopped at some small place to drink coffee. As we were up early, we could in most cases avoid queues and the days went on quite smoothly. Even though I was always looking for a typical French restaurant, we were out of luck, but we did taste some creep’s, snails and cheese, so at least some French food!

Suzhoussa, Tiger Hillin vieressä on isot häämarkkinat. Itse asiassa koko lähialue on täynnä kauppoja, jotka myyvät hääasuja, mekkoja, asusteita jne. Pari vuotta sitten kävin Tiger Hillin pagodaa katsomassa, mutta silloin en huomannut näitä liikkeitä. Liikkeitä on satoja, jos ei jopa enemmän, joten jos sinne oikeasti menee metsästämään asua, tarvitsee enemmän aikaa kun vain päivän. Asuja löytyy joka hintaluokasta. Kalliimmissa paikoissa mekot maksoivat 200-500 euron paikkeilla, kun taas muista paikoista sai hyvän asun 30 euron hintaan. Hääpukujen hintoja en katsonut, mutta olen lukenut että niitä saa kaikissa hintaluokissa.

Olin kuvitellut, että täältä ei länsimaalaiseen makuun mitään löydy, mutta olin iloisesti yllättynyt, että monessa kaupassa oli hienoja pukuja. Olisin ostanut paljon hiuskoristeita, mikäli olisin varautunut paremmin tähän matkaan. Kävimme sekä hienommissa liikkeissä, että rähjäisten kujien varrella olevissa paikoissa. Hääpukujen lisäksi täältä löytyisi vaikka mitä pukuja naamiaisia varten.

                                                                                                                                                             

In Suzhou, next to Tiger Hill, there is a large wedding market. I had been to the Tiger Hill pagoda some years ago, but at that time I had not noticed all the stores selling wedding related stuff. There were more than hundred stores selling dresses and accessories, and if I would have been seriously looking for something, I would have needed more than just a couple of hours. Some shops sold high-end looking dresses, as others looked quite cheap. The good ones cost something like 2000-3000rmb and the cheaper ones you could get for just some 100-200 rmb. I didn’t check the prices of the wedding dresses, but I’m sure there will be some in any price category.

I had imagined that there would only be dresses for the Chinese consumers taste, but I was surprised that there were many things that I liked. Especially all the hair decorations were something that I would have bought a lot of, if I would have prepared better for the trip. Some of the shops were more mall like, and other were located on small side streets. You could even find costumes for Halloween, as everything you could imagine was on sale here. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures in any of the high-end shops, as they were quite beautiful. 

Pingjiang -kävelykatu

Suzhoun matkalla kävimme Pingjiang kadulla. Katu on vanha ja sitä reunustaa monet kaupat ja joki, jota pitkin turisti veneet kulkivat. Katu oli paikoin todella ruuhkainen, vaikka se olikin ainoastaan kävelykatu. kaupoista ei tullut mitään ostettua, vaikka ne olivatkin todella kiinnostavia.

                                                                                                                                                          

During out time in Suzhou, we took a stroll on the Pingjiang street. It is next to a river, so tourists could hire a boat. Lots of shops were lined along the road, but we didn’t buy anything. The road was at points too crowded, but this how it is when you go to a tourist destination in the middle of the national holiday.

Mid-Autumn juhlan kunniaksi kävimme meren rannalla ottamassa aurinkoa ja uimassa jopa merivedessä! Ranta on maksullinen, ja sisäänpääsy maksu on noin yhdeksän euroa. Ranta oli suurempi, kun mitä olin kuvitellut, ja ihmisiä ei ollut oikeastaan kovin paljon. Itse makoilin hiekalla ihanan lämpimässä, aurinkoisessa ja tuulisessa säässä, sillä välin kun CC ui edes takaisin vedessä. Vesi on puhdistettu, ja on erillisessä altaassa, sillä oikea meri vesi on sen verran saasteista, ettei kukaan siellä voisi uida. Vesi oli lämmintä, uskoisin, että noin 24 astetta. Paikoin oli lämpimämpää vedessä, koska tuuli oli sen verran kova. Uimisen jälkeen kiersimme aluetta, ja hintaan kuului jalkakylpy kalojen kanssa. En pidä näistä ”kissing fish” altaista ollenkaan, joten CC sai kokea sen yksin. Päivä rannalla oli huikea, sillä nyt tuntuu, että kaikki löytyy Shanghaista! Ei ole enää tarvetta mennä mihinkään rantakohteeseen, kun oma ranta löytyy noin 15 minuutin ajomatkan päästä.

                                                                                                                                                            

On the Mid-Autumn Holiday, we decided to go to the beach next to the sea. The entrance is some 60rmb and the place was bigger than I had imagined. The beach was long and not that many people were there, since it is already autumn. I laid in the sun for most of the time as it wasn’t too hot or too cold in the sunny and windy weather. CC went swimming straight away and didn’t want to come out from the water as it was too cold in the wind. The water was pleasantly warm, and I think it was about 24 degrees. The water seemed to be purified sea water that was in a separate pool. The real sea is too polluted to swim in. 

Kiireiset viikot

Tuntuu, ettei minulla ole moneen viikkoon ollut aikaa kirjoitella blogissa. En itse asiassa ole avannut koko tietokonetta moneen päivään. Töissä on ollut kiire, ja vaikka en muitten työntekijöiden tapaan joudu tekemään ylitöitä, minulla ei kumminkaan ole paljon aikaa illalla. Iltasin kokkaan, käyn salilla tai muuten vain laiskottelen. Viime sunnuntaina täällä Kiinassa vietettiin keski-syksy-päivää, eli Mid-Autumn Day juhlaa. Sinä päivänä syödään kuu-kakkuja, mutta en itse kokeillut ainuttakaan sinä päivänä. Ajoimme yli puolituntia päästäkseen Haagen-Dazsin kahvilaan ostaakseen jäätelö kuu-kakun, mutta heillä ei ihme kyllä niitä ollut, vaikka menussa oli kyllä kuvat ja kaikki! Tänään olen istunut kotosalla, sillä meillä on viikon mittainen loma. Lokakuun ensimmäinen viikko on kansallisviikko, eli silloin kiinalaiset matkustavat jne. Mekin voisimme jonnekin matkustaa, mutta nyt ei vain ole fiilistä lähteä mihinkään. Ensi viikon puolella CCn sisko menee naimisiin, joten häitä vietetään kolmisen päivää ja siihen vielä päälle kaikki valmistelut.

                                                                                                                                                                

I feel like I haven’t had the time to write in my blog in weeks. Work has been stressful and when coming home late in the evening, I never feel like opening up my computer. I usually cook or go to the gym, and after this there is not much time to do anything else. Last Sunday, China celebrated Mid-Autumn Holiday with come moon cakes. Unfortunately, I didn’t eat any moon cakes, as Haagen-Dazs didn’t have any ice cream ones in their shop, even though they have them on the menu! Today I have been just at home, as I have a week long holiday. In the beginning of October is the National Holiday or Golden Week, when Chinese people travel around the country. We should also go somewhere, but I don’t know where exactly. Next week CCs sister will get married, so half of the holiday will be spent at the wedding, which takes up some three days.

Crowne Plaza

Vietimme kaksi yötä Hefein Crowne Plaza hotelissa. Hotelli oli hyvä ja kaikki tarvittava löytyi, mutta mielestäni palvelu ei ollut ehkä niin ensiluokkaista kun mitä olisi voinut kuvitella, esim. englannin kielen taito vaihteli suuresti. Hotellin hyvät puolet oli suuri huone, jossa oli erikseen suihku ja kylpyamme. Kylpyhuoneen ja makuhuoneen välisen seinän pystyi liuottamaan sivuun, ja esim. vedenkeittimen veden lisääminen sujui helposti. Huoneemme sijaitsi kahdeksannessa kerroksessa, ja maisemat olivat huonot. Näkymään kuului autokoulun harjoittelupiha ja junarata.

Harmitti kovasti, että olin varannut hieman kalliimman hotellin, sillä emme viettäneet hotelissa kovin paljon aikaa. Ensimmäisenä päivänä saavuimme hotelliin vasta kolmen jälkeen. Lähdimme melkein heti heittämään kaveri, joka oli ollut kyydissä mukana Shanghaista asti, kämpilleen. Jäimme sinne sitten odottamaan noin tunnin, että voisimme mennä ulos syömään. Syömiseenkin kului parisen tuntia ja hotellissa olimme taas vasta yhdeksän aikoihin. Seuraavana päivänä meillä oli aamupäivällä hommia, mutta sen jälkeen oli aikaa käydä uimassa. Kaveri tuli pelaamaan korttia huoneeseemme ja tilasin huonepalvelun. Iltapäivällä lähdimme ulos ja takaisin tulimme sitten taas joskus kahdeksan aikoihin. Nopeasti kävimme kuntosalilla ennen kun alkoi nukuttaa liikaa. Seuraavana ja viimeisenä aamuna lähdimme jo ennen kahdeksaa ulos ja tulimme vasta vähän ennen kello kahta takaisin. Ehdin juuri ja juuri pakata tavarat kasaan ennen kun piti tsekata ulos. Aamupala ei kuulunut hintaan ja emme edes ehtineet mennä sinne, vaikka olisin ollut valmis maksamaan 15 euroa per henkilö.

                                                                                                                                                                   

We spent two nights in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hefei. The hotel was good, but the service not as excellent as I would imagine a place like this would have. Even though there were western people staying there in addition to me, the staff wasn’t always able to communicate in English. The room we had was quite nice and big. We had a large bedroom with a bathroom that had separate toilet, shower and bathtub. The wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom could be slide to the side and this made adding water to the boiler much easier. The hotel had also an indoor swimming pool and gym that we had time to go to.

Actually I didn’t feel like we had enough time to use all the commodities of the hotel, as we were most of the time outside. In other words the amount of time spent in the hotel was so little, that we could have just as well got a cheaper hotel. We arrived late on the day of check in and the first day we went out for dinner and only came back late in the evening. The second day we had time in the hotel, but not as much as I would have liked. The last day and check out day we didn’t have any time to spend in the hotel and I was barely able to come back in time to pack up before we had to check out at two o’clock.
