Tailored for Me

I had planned that on the first week in Shanghai, I would go and make some clothes at Lujiabang tailor market. This didn’t happen, however, until this rainy weekend. I went first the jeans tailor that I know from before, but the seller that I used to talk to wasn’t there. Regardless, I still managed to keep the price down as it normally is, even though he tried to say that it is more expensive since the fabric is better.. I ended up making three pair of pants; black, rose and beige. I had two pairs of jeans that I wanted to copy, since I like having things made out of my own clothes. That way I can be more certain that the style will fit me.

Next I looked for a place to copy my Zara jersey dress. The dress in itself was never expensive, but the style is great. Here again I ended up making two copies of the dress at an older Chinese ladies jersey store. She asked me first how much I have paid for the dress before saying how much I should pay for the copies. The copies and the real one ended up costing about the same amount, meaning some 150rmb. The lady told me not to tell my friends about the price, as she was not willing to make more jersey dresses for a price this low. I seem to be quite lucky with the prices, since this time I didn’t even start by haggling the price down, instead she gave me the exact price I was willing to pay. She told me dresses would be ready in ten days, which is quite long, as they usually make simple clothes in seven days. I said eight days, she said ok and wanted me to come in the afternoon. It will be interesting picking up the dresses, as I have no idea how well this place makes their clothes.

Heti alussa, kun tulin Shanghaihin, oli tarkoitus mennä teettämään vaatteita. Se jostain syystä jäi tekemättä, kunnes nyt sateisena viikonloppuna lähdimme autolla keskustaan. Menin ensiksi tutulle farkku-räätälille, mutta myyjänä ei tällä kertaa ollut sama kuin aikaisempina kertoina. Tästä huolimatta sain hinnan pidettyä samana, vaikka myyjä yrittikin nostaa hintaa sanomalla, että valitsin hyvän kankaan. Nyt sitä odotellaan kolmea farkkua: Mustat, roosat ja beiget. Malleina oli kaksi omaa housuani, sillä siten takaa, että malli istuu.

Toiseksi halusin kopioida Zaran trikoo mekon. Mekko jo itessään ei maksanut paljoa, mutta malli on sen verran hyvä, että pakko sellainenkin kahtena kappaleena teettää. Trikoo-kaupassa en ole aikaisemmin käynyt, joten lopputuloksesta ei ole hajuakaan. Myyjänä oli vanhempi kiinalainen rouva, joka uteli mitä olin mekosta alun perin maksanut, ennen kun hän halusi antaa minulle hinnan. Eiköhän aito ja kopiot aika samanhintaisia tule olemaan, eli vähän yli parikymmentä euroa. Myyjä korosti vielä lopussa, että älä kerro tätä hintaa kavereilleni, sillä hän ei jatkossa aio tehdä näin halvalla hinnalla mekkoja. No kävipäs minulla sitten hyvä tuuri. Tässä liikkeessä oli kuulema ruuhka, joten hän yritti, että tulisin vasta kymmenen päivän päästä hakemaan. Normaalisti kaikki ei niin erikoiset vaatteet ovat viikon kuluessa valmiita. Sain hänet suostumaan kahdeksaan päivään, jos tulen vasta iltapäivällä ne noutamassa. Tekisi mieli teettää vaikka mitä vaatteita, mutta kun en tiedä miten hyvän tuotteen saa, jos valitsee mallin vain kuvien perusteella. Siksi käynkin mielummin lähiseudun kaupat läpi, jossa heti kokeillessa tietää, toimiiko vaate vai ei.

Face Masks

Face masks are in great demand in China. They have been in most stores since I came to China in 2013. I didn’t try them in the beginning, but now I have become more interested in finding a good one for myself. I started by buying some cheap ones from Mannings, but they aren’t that good. Therefore I will have to look for better ones, maybe even buy some more expensive ones from Sephora? My sister-in-law used to buy really cheap and great silk masks, which made the skin moist and smelled really nice from the internet, but  I don’t think I will find any good ones on my own from Taobao.

Kasvonaamiot ovat Kiinassa kova hitti. Niitä on ollut tarjolla monessa kaupassa jo siitä lähtien kun tulin Kiinaan vuonna 2013. En alussa käyttänyt niitä ollenkaan, mutta nyt pikkuhiljaa olen alkanut kokeilemaan niitäkin. Laadussa huomaa eroja, mutta hinta ei aina takaa parempaa laatua. Ostin nämä kasvonaamiot Mannings kaupasta, jossa oli vaikka kuinka monta eri merkkiä tarjolla. En kokenut, että nämä olisivat erikoisen hyvät, joten metsästys jatkuu. 

Eslite bookstore

CC keksi, että menisimme jonnekin, jossa emme aikaisemmin ole olleet. Suuntasimme siis kohti Suzhoun kaupunkia, jossa minulle entuudestaan tuntematon kohde sijaitsi. Matka sinne kesti noin pari tuntia, ja suuntasimme Suzhoun teollisuusalueelle. Päädyimme Expo-alueelle, ja luulin jo että menemme katsomaan jotain messuja. Selvisikin, että pääkohteena oli Eslite niminen kirjakauppa. CC tiesi, että tykkään katsella ja ostella kirjoja, joten hän päätti yllättää viemällä minut suuren kirjakauppaan. Eslite kirjakauppa on aivan omaa luokkaansa, kun vertaa Kiinan kirjakauppoihin. Todella suuri, siististi sisustettu ja paljon kiinnostavia kirjoja. Englanninkielisiä kirjoja oli aseteltu vähän mihin sattuu, mutta minua kiinnostivat halvemmat kiinankieliset ruokakirjat enemmän. Monet kirjat maksavat vain viitisen euroa, kun vertaa länsimaalaisiin kirjoihin, jotka olivat halvimmillaan yli kymmenen euroa. Monet design kirjat olivat lähemmäs 70euroa, mikäli ne olivat englanniksi. Kirjakaupassa oli myös paljon muita tarvikkeita myynnissä ja jopa design tuotteita. Suurin yllätys oli kyllä ruokatarvikkeet, jotka olivat esillä ruoka-kirja osastolla. Olin myös innoissani löytäessäni pohjoismaisia dekkareita kiinaksi. Olisin mielelläni antanut Liza Marlundin kirjan CClle, mutta se oli vain kantoninkiinaksi, eli toisin sanonen vaikeammilla merkeillä, ja teksti luetaan oikealta vasemmalle. Onneksi vastaan tuli Stieg Larssonin kaksi ensimmäistä teosta, joten saapa nähdä mitä CC sanoo pohjoismaisesta kirjallisuudesta.

CC came up with the idea to take me to some place I have never been to before. Therefore we drove to Suzhou during the week to a destination I had no clue about. We arrived in a large shopping mall with a book store named Eslite. It is a famous bookstore chain from Taiwan, and it was much better than any of the stores I have been to before in China. It was modern, clean, and there was a lot of room. It is also funny how people are allowed to sit down and read the books, so need to buy them, just like a library. However, a large part of the books are in plastic, to prevent people from destroying them while reading them without buying. There were some English books here and there, but I was more interested in Chinese cook books. We actually got one for making salads and one for baking, both cost just some 30rmb. The prices are so low when comparing to what western books usually cost. I was also fascinated by the Nordic detective books section. I found a Liza Marklund book I wanted CC to read, but it was in Cantonese.. Instead I bought Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series first two books, as they were written in the more simple Mandarin Chinese. I also had to add that the bookstore was in a way quite interesting, as they had placed food items next to the cookbook section! 

Peasant art shop

Keskustassa kävellessämme pikkukatua pitkin, huomasin pienessä liikkeessä kiinalaisia ”maalais”- maalauksia, joita itse maalasin yli vuosi sitten amerikkalaisten oppilaiden kanssa joissain pikku kylässä. Teemana on aina jotain kiinalaiseen elämään liittyvää. Maalaukset ovat todella simppeleitä, niin simppeleitä, että varmaan lapsetkin osaavat. Liike sijaitsi jonkin suuremman talon sisäpihalla, joten eipä varmaan moni sinne eksy. Kauppias datasi samalla kuunnelleessaan musiikkia, ja vastasi mielellään sekä kiinaksi että englanniksi meidän kysymyksiin. Ostin kasan kortteja ja kaksi A5 kantta, jonne voi kerätä tärkeitä papereita.

While we walked along a road in the city I noticed a small shop window with peasant art. I had painted peasant paintings in a village with some American students some year ago, so I had to take look. The shop was in the yard of a larger house, and it seems like not many people actually goes there. The shopkeeper was nice and answered our questions in both Chinese and English. I bought cards and two A5 paper holders. I like the simple but yet colorful of design of the peasant art.

Olen monen suomalaisen blogista nähnyt, että he käyvät DTL nimisessä liikkeessä ostamassa huonekaluja. Liike, tai paremmin sanottuna varastorakennus, sijaitsee Pudongissa, ja vain noin 20 min ajomatkan päässä kotoa. En kumminkaan ole sinne mennyt, kunnes CC kävi etsimässä töitä lähistöltä. Suurin osa asiakkaista taitaa olla länsimaalaisia, mutta silti varasto sijaitsee sen verran syrjäisessä paikassa, että ihmettelen kuka sinne menee. Varastohalli oli valtava ja kaiken maailman kiinalaistyylisiä modernilla tvisitillä löytyi. Hinnat ovat todella kovat, mutta toisaalla Kiinassa kaikki huonekalut taitavat olla kalliita, mikäli haluaa edes jotenkin hyvän näköisen. Olen pitkään haaveillut ostavani pienen kiinalaisen pallin. Haave kävi toteen, kun muistin heillä olevan 200rmb eli 30 euron voucheri niille, jotka jakavat kaupan mainoksen kavereilleen Wechatissä. Alkuperäinen hinta pallilla oli siis yli 50 euroa, mutta voucherilla ja alennuksilla loppusuma oli noin 17 euroa. Cc sai myös alennusta, sillä meillä on eri kaverit chättissä, joten saimme myös ihanan ruukun noin 6 eurolla. Kaikki muut varmasti ostavat jotain paljon kalliimpaa, sillä suurin osa tuotteista maksaa siinä 450 euron kohdilla, mutta me kyllä saimme tehtyä sellaiset kaupat, ai että! Nyt vaan pitää selvittää miten paljon pallin kuljetus Suomeen maksaa..

I have noticed from some of the Finns blogs that I follow that they like going furniture shopping to a place called DTL. The shop, or more like a warehouse, is located in Pudong in a weird place. There is no metro nearby, it isn’t even in a place where western people normally go. That is probably the reason I never went there in the start. Fortunately, CC went to look for a job nearby, so I headed there with him. The only customers in the shop were western. How they get there I don’t know, as getting a taxi might be hard. The warehouse is enormous with lots of nice Chinese style furniture. Most of them have been made more modern with some details or colors. The prices, of course, are high, but that’s how it generally is if you don’t want to buy Ikea here. I had remembered seeing an advert where the shop would give 200rmb vouchers for anyone who posted the shops adverts to their friends in Wechat. I saw a stool that I had wanted to buy. Now with the 200 rmb discount it cost only 150rmb. They also had a New Year’s Sale, so in the end the stool only cost 115rmb! In addition, we found a nice pot and since Cc and I have different friends, he was also able to get the discount, and the pot cost only some 40rmb! Never been so happy about getting this much discounts for decoration items and furniture. Most of the furniture cost around 3000rmb, and most people use the discounts for those products. Therefore, I might be one of the only ones actually getting this kind of great benefit from the Wechat voucher.

Oneplus X

CC tarvitsi uuden puhelimen, mutta monet tunnetut merkit ovat liian kalliita tai muuten vain turhia, joten suosittelin hänen ostavan Oneplus merkkisen puhelimen. Sain kuulla tästä merkistä ensimmäistä kertaa vuosi sitten ystävältä, joka oli sen hankkinut. Tämän jälkeen olen silloin tällöin huomioinut, mikäli merkistä kirjoitetaan uutisissa. Vastaan tuli mm. että Oneplus piti kampanjan, jossa innokkaiden ostajien piti kuvata rikkoessaan Iphonensa ja tämän jälkeen he saisivat tilaisuuden tilata Oneplus kännykän. Sanottiin, että vain rajattu määrä ihmisiä saisi tilata puhelimen, mutta näitä videoita tuli vain lisään ja lisään, sillä ihmisien oli pakko saada Oneplus.

Mikä tekee Oneplus merkistä niin erikoisen, on se, että sitä sai ennen ostaa vain, mikäli jokin ystävä oli jo ostanut ja hän jakoi linkin jonka avulla seuraava henkilö pystyi tämän puhelimen netistä ostamaan. Eli toisin sanoen, mikäli et tunne henkilöä jolla on Oneplus, mahdollisuudet ostaa puhelin on aika pieni, mikäli et osallistu merkin eri arvontoihin tai ”iphone-rikkomistapahtumiin”.

Olin siis tämän kaiken lukenut, että puhelinta on todella vaikea ostaa jne., kunnes löysin Oneplus liikkeen Shanghaista. Kyllä helpotti, kun sai mennä puhelimia katsomaan, eikä tarvitse monta kuukautta odotella jollain jonotuslistalla. Halvin malli oli loppuunmyyty, joten CC valitsi Oneplus X mallisen puhelimen, joka valkoisella kuorella ja punakultaisella sivuillaan muistuttaa Iphonea melko paljon. Puhelin maksoi noin 240euroa, eli ei mitään verrattuna suosituimpiin merkkeihin.

CC needed a new phone and as I find the popular phone brands too expensive, I recommended him to buy an Oneplus phone. I heard about this brand a year ago from a friend who had bought it. However, buying the phone is not a simple task as you have to get an invite from someone already having the phone. I didn’t look forward on buying online and being on some waiting list. Therefore, I got somewhat surprised when I found an Oneplus store in the center on Shanghai.

We went to the store twice and looked at the phones and on the second time made a purchase. The cheapest model was sold out so we took the Oneplus X model costing 1599rmb. In other words the phone is as good as some bigger brand but costs just one third of what they cost. Of course the newest Oneplus 2 would have cost some 2499rmb, so still cheaper than the most well-known ones.

Oneplus is a Chinese brand and getting more and more popular. What makes it so popular is the limited access. In many countries, such as Finland, you have to either get an invitation or then take part in some contest to get the chance to buy the phone. They even had a campaign where people who filmed when they broke their Iphones would have the chance to buy an Oneplus. People were so desperate to get the Oneplus that they continued sending in videos even after the amount of people getting the phone was overdue. In other words the exclusivity and the cheaper price compared to competitors makes the Oneplus a great phone in my opinion. Unfortunately my Samsung is going strong after being in use for just 2,5 years, so no need for me to get a new phone for now. 

Ompelutarvikemarkkinoilla

Kävin lauantain Saksalaisen kanssa ompelutarvikemarkkinoilla. Onneksi meillä on samat harrastukset, joten voimme molemmat monta tuntia katsella vetoketjuja, naruja, timantteja jne. Olen CCn kanssa parisen kertaa käynyt, mutta se ei oikein toiminut, joten hyvä sain seuraa. Tällä kertaa kävimme siellä hakemassa vähän tarvikkeita kotiin vietäväksi. Halvimmillaan saa vetoketjuja parillakymmenellä sentillä ja niitit sun muut pienet tavarat maksavat viisi senttiä kappale. Markkinoilta löytyy paljon tavaraa, jotka voivat hienomassa kaupassa maksaa tuplasti enemmän.

                                                                                                                                                                 

On Saturday I went together with my German friend to the sewing accessories market near the Yu yuan garden. I’m happy we have the same hobbies as both can stare at zippers, buttons, and other small things for ages. We both needed to go there and stock up on all the cheap stuff that costs a fortune back in Europe. Even the same things bough in nicer shops in Shanghai might be double the price to what they cost in the market. 

Harrastuksena Ikea

Olemme viimeisen kuukauden aikana käyneet kolmesti Ikeassa. Ruoka on hyvää ja halpaa, jos haluaa syödä lohta ja muita länsimaalaisia ruokia Kiinassa. Toiseksi täältä löytää hyviä ja ei niin kalliita huonekaluja. Cckin on nyt tottunut siihen, että huonekalut ja keittiötarvikkeet ostetaan Ikeasta, ja hän innoissaan kiertelee paikkoja. Kerran otimme hänen äitinsä ja isäpuolensa mukaan ostoksille.

Olemme kahdesti olleet viikonloppuna, jolloin paikalla on aivan liikaa porukkaa. Ruokajonossa voi olla jopa sata ihmistä edessä. Kävimme viimeksi tiistaina töitten jälkeen, ja silloin oli melkeinpä tyhjää. Jonossa ei ollut paljon ihmisiä ja ruoka oli kello kuuden jälkeen puoleen hintaan. Tiistaina ruokaosaston ruoat ovat -15%, joten keksejä ja muita herkkuja tuli ostettua. Myöhemmin sitten lisään siitä, mitä on tullut ostettua.

                                                                                                                                                                

We have been to Ikea three times during the last month. Twice during weekend and once during the week. It is extremely crowded during the weekend, and almost empty in the evening on Tuesday. We go there both because of the good and cheap food, but also because we need new furniture. Cc had got used to the idea that we buy furniture and kitchenware from Ikea. It is quite nice to walk around and look at the display rooms to give an insight on what Nordic homes look like.  

On Tuesday the food was -50% after 18 o’clock, so we had quite a feast! The food in the shop was also on sale during that day, so I stocked up some cookies and other sweets. It is nice to have a car, so we can easily buy furniture without having to pay for delivery. Ikea is just some 20 minutes away, so it is quite convenient to drive there. I will later post what I have bought from Ikea during the last shopping trips. 

Syksyn ostoksia

Tässä viimeisimmät ostokset tältä erää. Löysimme taas kenkä myyjän, jolta saa halvalla merkki kengät suoraan tehtaalta. Vanhat Vans kengät ovat olleet käytössä lähemmäs viisi vuotta, joten eiköhän ole aika vaihtaa uusiin. Teki mieli myös ostaa samantapaisella kukkakuosilla varustetut Niken lenkkarit, mutta tyydyn näihin niin kauan kun ulkona pystyy kävelemään kangaskengillä.

Netistä tilasin Maison Michelin hatun, sillä se on nyt todella suosittu Shanghaissa. Tälläisiä hattuja löytyy monesta kaupasta, mutta usein melko kalliita. Netistä, eli Taobaosta, löytyy eri hintaluokissa, ja tämä oli siitä halvimmasta päästä. Ei mitään parasta laatua, mutta malliltaan näyttää hyvältä.

Sitten vielä viimeiseksi Fjällräven reppu tuli ostettua markkinoilta. Ostin vaalean sinisen repun jo pari kuukautta sitten, ja se on ollut ahkerassa käytössä jumppalaukkuna. Liila reppu sopii paremmin retkirepuksi. Tälläistä täällä Kiinassa voi ostaa yhteensä viidelläkymmenellä eurolla.

                                                                                                                                                                    

Here are my latest buys from Autumn. We found a new sneaker guy, as the last one quit, and from this one I bought some Vans sneakers. The come straight from the factory with a lower price than what you get from the stores. I wanted to buy some Nike sneakers with a similar flower motive, but maybe I should stick with this as long as possible.

I also wanted to buy a Maison Michel hat for quite some time. I just found expensive ones in shops, so ended up buying a cheaper one from Taobao instead. The quality is not good, but I like the style and fit. These hats are really popular in Shanghai right now.

Another thing that is getting more popular is Fjällräven backpacks. I bought a light blue one some months ago, which I have used as my gym bag. The bag was so good that I bought a second one in lila. I have started to notice lots of Chinese people using the Fjällräven bag, but not nearly as much as I have seen in Finland. All of these things together cost less than 400rmb. 

Baobao laukku

Tässä taas laukku, josta en aluksi pitänyt, mutta löytäessäni sen tässä kuosissa, olihan se pakko saada. Normaalisti baobao laukut löytyvät eri värissä, ja halvimmat ovat muovisia ja kiiltäviä kun taas parempi laatuiset ovat sileämpiä. Jälleen kerran hinta markkinoilla oli lähemmäs sataa euroa alkaessani tinkimissodan. En ensimmäisellä kerralla halvalla saanut, joten seuraavalla kerralla, kun minulla oli asiaa markkinoilla, kävin toisessa liikkeessä vähän korkeammalla hinnalla. Lopputulos oli, että laukun sain vähän yli 20 eurolla. Olisin halunnut isomman, mutta sellaista ei mistään löytynyt. Laukku mahtuu hyvin isomman laukun sisään ostoskassiksi, tai sitten siitä tulee uusi työlaukku. Monella kiinalaisella näkyy tämä laukku käytössä, mutta onneksi ei ole sanan värinen.

                                                                                                                                                                   

Here again is a bag that I didn’t like when I first saw it. These were fashionable in Singapore a year ago, but not until I found it in this color combination, did I realize that I wanted it. Not all stalls in the market had it, so it was hard to get it for a cheap price. At first some of them had the price as high as 600rmb. Some stalls sold plastic ones in different colors, but only those selling the better quality ones, with smooth finish, looked good. I didn’t buy the bag during the first trip, but the second time, when I was hunting for some other things in the market. In the end one of the sellers followed me for a good five minutes until she realized I wouldn’t change my price, and I got it for 140rmb. Still not what I wanted to pay, but one of the other sellers was genuinely surprised I could buy it so cheaply.  

DG sini-valkoinen takki

Tämä takki tuli ostettua jo elokuussa, mutta sillä en ole sitä yhtä kertaa enempää käyttänyt, en ole oikein ehtinyt siitä kirjoittaakaan. Ostin sen häitä varten, mutta sillä syyskuussa oli liian kuuma, en sitä silloin tarvinnut. Sen sijaan käytin sitä CCn siskon häitten harjoitteluillallisilla. Takki oli väriltään ja malliltaan niin erikoinen, että pakko se oli ostaa, vaikka maksoikin lähemmäs 90euroa. Ostin takin Science and Technology markkinoilla olevalta myyjältä, jolta olen aikaisemmin ostanut mm. kenkiä ja laukkuja. Takki olisi voinut olla hieman isompi, mutta isompia kokoja ei ollut, ja muutenkin kaikki erikoisemmat merkit pitää aina tilata postitse.

                                                                                                                                                                     

I bought this jacket back in October, but since I haven’t worn it that much, I have forgotten to post about it. I bought it for a wedding, but since it was hot in September, I could not wear it. I liked the color and print, I wasn’t sure about the fit, but it looks good. It is somewhat small at the shoulders, but there weren’t bigger sizes, so it will do. The jacket was quite expensive, costing 600rmb after haggling for a while with one of my Science and Technology sellers. She send the better products with delivery, so I could not see it in advance. 

Häissä Qipaossa

Suzhoun häämarkkinoilta tuli ostettua punainen lyhyt Qipao –mekko häitä varten. Olin jo ostanut mustan mokkamekon Shanghaista, mutta häissä kuuluu olla punainen mekko kuulemma. Onneksi löysimme pienen kaupan, jonka ulkopuolella oli kyltti, että Qipaot maksavat vain 7euroa. Tietenkin mekot sisällä maksoivat enemmän, mutta löysin yhden, jonka hinta oli 23euroa. Olisin itse asiassa halunnut sinisen, mutta kokoa ei löytynyt, joten kokeilin punaista. Kaupassa oli vaikka mitä malleja ja eri kankaista tehtyjä Qipaota ja muita perinteisiä hääasuja.

                                                                                                                                                                 

I bought a Qipao from the wedding market in Suzhou. We found a store with a sing that Qiapos cost only 35rmb, so we went inside to have a look. I liked one of the blue Qiapos, but they didn’t have it in my size, so I was given the same one in red. Traditionally, you should wear red to a Chinese wedding, so CC and his sister thought I should buy it, even though I had already bought a black dress. The Qipao was of good quality, with soft lace and some glitter, and cost 150rmb.
