By Empty Plane

Arriving in south-east Shanghai

I flew from Helsinki to Shanghai on Tuesday in the evening with Finnair. My parents travelled on the same day to Gran Canary, so we had some company of each other in the airport. There were almost no people when I checked in my bag and went through the security control. The first time it become somewhat crowded was when we came to the other side of the security check. I suspect that there were lots of transit passengers travelling that day and that’s why there weren’t any people checking-in.

My gate was in a new area, which I’ve never been to before. It was like a large bus terminal, since there were no planes. When we started “boarding”, we were separated based on our ticket into two waiting areas. The business class people got on the first buss as we had to wait for the second one to arrive. I overheard that the plane was quite far away, so I managed to get a seat in the bus. Walking from the bus to the airplane wasn’t that fun as it was freezing cold and snowy. I can imagine that most people weren’t prepared for a walk outside with no coats on, etc.

Due to the heavy snow fall some of the other flights from Europe were delayed and it caused our plane to wait for their cargo. I could follow the loading of the cargo into our plane through the monitor’s video cam on top of the plane. The flight ended up being delayed by some 40-50 minutes. On the positive side, there were some one hundred empty seats, so I could move to an empty row and take all three seats for myself. However, I couldn’t get much sleep during the flight, so having two extra seats didn’t help that much.

Due to the delay, there were just a few people before me in the passport control in Shanghai. Usually it takes anywhere between 20 to 45 minutes to get through it, but now it was done in less than 10 minutes. My bag also arrived quite fast and my husband and his mother waited for me in the arrivals hall. We took the car home and I got straight to bed to catch up on the sleep I had lost during the flight.

Seurasin omasta monitoristani koneen videokameraa, joten siinä näki kun he lastasivat tavaroita koneen sisään.

Matkan varrella on siis monta tietullia, jossa maksetaan noin eurosta kahteenkymmeneen euroon.

---------------------

On Monday we woke up at five o’clock to early start driving towards a city in northern Anhui province. The following day was the wedding of one of CCs best friends, so we thought it would be good to arrive there early. The city was just some 450km away from Shanghai, so CC guessed it would take five hours and I estimated the trip to take at least eight hours. We were both wrong, as the trip took just fourteen hours! The reason for this were lots of traffic jams along the way. Especially as we got closer to Nanjing, the traffic was the most horrible thing that I have ever witnessed. We were at some point stuck in traffic for over an hour and couldn’t move anywhere. People started getting out of their cars, peeing in the bushes, walking along the highway and cooking some instant noodles on the road..

In addition to these traffic jams we saw lots of road accidents, which I think lead to most traffic jams. it had snowed the day before, and as most Chinese people here in the south/west part don’t have winter tires, I’m not surprised at all of they crashed into each other, as crazily as Chinese people drive! The highway had just two lanes, which was bad as millions of people had chosen the same path as we had. I don’t think driving to the city would otherwise have been a problem, if it wasn’t for Chinese Spring Festival, the time of the year when everyone has to go home. After this trip I think I will avoid any further road trips in China.

Seitsemän tunnin odottelua

First one on the airplane
I liked the way the ceiling looks like the sky
I could keep an eye on what the workers on the ground were doing during our 4 hours wait
Using the voucher Finnair gave due to the delay on some Starbucks food

--------------------------------------------------------------

Once again I had an interesting experience when taking the plane from Helsinki to Shanghai. The plane was delayed for about seven hours due to some technical problems with the brakes. Now I’m talking about the new Airbus plane, which has been used just over a month and already they got into some serious problems with it. Finnair sent a text message when I was on my way to the airport that the plane would be delayed for one hour. It wasn’t that bad as I had time to go shopping and go to a café with my family before going to the security check.

When I arrived at the gate it seemed like many travelers didn’t know about the one hour delay. Some Chinese people came running to the gate at five o’clock since the original time would have been 17:10. At that time I was glad it was delayed since these people would have delayed it anyways by coming in the last minute.

We could not get straight to the plane from the gate, but instead we had to take the bus. I was one of the first ones on the bus and the first one to board the plane. At this time they didn’t seem to care if you had a first class seat or not as everyone boarded at the same time. The plane was so packed that many people could not find empty spaces for their carry-on luggage. Even though the plane was full, there was an empty seat between me and a Finnish man. This was great as I would not have liked sleeping while being afraid to sleep on the person next to me shoulder.

The captain already announced that the flight time would be 8 hours and 40 minutes and then we were told that there still were some technical problems that they had to fix before takeoff. The captain announced later again that it seemed to be more problematic than they had expected and he was unaware how long it would take. After some time he announced that we had to wait for an hour… and then and hour again. In the end we had been in the plane since about 18, until he finally announced that all the passengers would be escorted by bus back to the terminal. At this point we had been waiting inside the plane four about 4 hours.

In the terminal we got a 17 euros voucher to go to a café or restaurant to eat. Most people went straight to the nearest Burger King as I walked further away to Starbucks. We were told that new information would come at 11. I was waiting at the gate around that time and no information came. The display changed the time to 12, so it meant that we had to stick around even longer to know if we could leave today or the following day. Even the ground personnel were unsure about what would happen.

After 11:40 we were driven back to the plane as the brakes had been changed and tested. Now the captain ensured that we would be on our way to Shanghai. As the food was served after midnight I felt somewhat sick but fortunately I didn’t throw up. I was also able to sleep better since it was in the middle of the night and not in the evening. We landed in Shanghai at 15:30, some 7 hours and 20 minutes later than usually. I’m glad I didn’t have any connecting flights as I’m sure everyone missed theirs. The baggage claim had lots of people and it took a while to get out from the airport. Luckily CC picked me up by car and we drove home in gray, cold and rainy weather.

Uudessa A350 koneessa

Lensimme sunnuntaina Shanghaista kotiin Suomeen uudella Airbus A350 koneessa. Jopa oma tuuletus puuttui, joten paikoin olikin melko kuumaa. Palvelu toimi ja ruoka maistui. Tänään taas takaisin kentälle ja matka jatkuu Eurooppaan.

On Sunday we flew from Shanghai to Helsinki with the new Finnair Airbus A350 plane. The flight went well and we landed more than 30 minutes earlier even though the boarding started late. The plane was not full, but we still got some one seated next to us. I don’t like the new seating arrangements, with three people seated next to each other. The older planes with two people seats were much better. On the bright side the space is bigger for your feet and bags and it was easier to sleep. The sleeping position of the chair is also more comfortable and the table can be folded in half so it doesn’t take up too much space. Not too many bumps on the road and good food made the flight better than usually.

Changan auto

As I have mentioned in many blogposts before, CC bought a car. The main reason for this is to drive me home from work. So in other words he acts as my personal driver. In the beginning he also drove me to work, but due to the heavy traffic, the drive takes the same amount of time as the bus ride. This means that in the morning I take the bus to work and in the evening he will pick me up. The drive home time depends on if there is traffic or not. If end work before four or after six, usually there is no traffic, and we are home in about 35 minutes. But if I end work between five and six, there might be more traffic, and the ride takes more than 50 minutes.

The car that he bought is a Changan Chinese car. It looks similar to western car brands, but is a fraction of the price. The car is quite nice both inside and out. We decided on a SUV, since a smaller car wouldn’t work well on longer trips and if there is lots of people. Lots of Chinese people have SUVs or bigger cars, since these are in most cases more expensive. On the other hand some people cannot show their wealth through cars, and have to buy a less expensive one than what they actually would afford. This is true for people working for the government. It is not a good sign if they drive around in expensive cars.

Kuvaus liikenteestä

Olen keksinyt kaksi lausetta, jotka kuuvavat Kiinan liikennettä aivan loistavasti:

Jalankulkijat kävelevät ajotiellä, autot ajavat polkupyöräkaistalla ja mopot ajavat jalkakäytävällä.

Punaisella ajetaan ja vihreällä odotetaan.

Tälläinen siis Shanghain liikenne suurimaksi osaksi on.

I have come up with two sentences that describe the traffic of China:

People walk on the main road, cars drive on the bike lane and moped drive on the sidewalk.

During red light you drive and during green light you stop.

Shanghai - Hefei

Kiinassa vietetään pyhiä ja minä lähden lomalle. En lähde sentään mihinkään pitkälle, vaan ajamme viereiseen provinssiin, jossa mm. CCn kotikaupunki Anqing sijaitsee. Sunnuntaiaamuna lähdimme ajamaan kohti Hefein kaupunkia, jonne matka kuulemma on viisi tuntia, mutta lopputuloksena oli 7 tuntia. Siihen kyllä sisältyi meidän viisi taukoa, jolloin kävimme vessassa tai söimme autossa olleita snackeja. Olemme Anhuin provinssissa viikon ja sitten palaamme takaisin Shanghaihin ja minulla jatkuu taas työt.

China will celebrate and I will go on a holiday. Not too far away, just to the neighbor province of Anhui. We will drive there and our first stop is the city of Hefei. I have been told the drive takes five hours but in reality it took us some 7 hours. This included our five toilet and snack brakes. We will stay in Anhui for about a week and after that we will return to Shanghai and I have to go back to work.

Kaupunkiajelua

On the weekend we drove to the Science and Technology market to return a bag. The museum next to the market was packed with people, so good that we didn’t need to go there. After this we drove to the other side of the river and went to the tailor market to pick up my dress. The dress was a disaster and another story I will tell later. We drove to the Cool Docks to have dinner in the same Thai place as last time. Delicious food, including my new favorite pineapple rice! After this we took the longer way home, meaning we drove through the Bund and through Hongkou back to Pudong.

Polkupyörä ostettu

My new bike that I will take better pictures of some other day!
The warehouse was dark and filled with all sorts of bikes
The worker assembling my bike inside the warehouse

Some while ago I was thinking about buying a moped, but instead we bought a car, so there was no need for me to get one. But in most cases, I do not need to go by car to some nearby place such as the store or to the gym, so we decided to get me a bicycle. My German friend has tried to get me to buy a bicycle from the very beginning, but I think it is quite unsafe to use bicycle in China. The traffic is horrible, to say the least, and the roads aren’t always in the best condition. On the other hand most roads have separate street for bicycles and moped, but people might walk there and cars usually park on these streets, so it doesn’t make it any better from the rest of the roads.

We found a place nearby our home that sells bicycles and mopeds to shops. The place was a warehouse filled with bicycles still in packages and plastic, and the bicycles had to be assembled. I needed to decide on which color I wanted. I would have wanted a blue and pink one, but this color was only found on a more expensive model. I ended up choosing a turquoise and lilac bike. A man assembled the bike in just a couple of minutes and then I could test drive it inside the warehouse. Unfortunately he didn’t make the screws tight enough, so CC had to return there and get the screws tightened later on.

The bike doesn’t have a hand brake, so it means that I brake by pedaling backwards. I think it is quite simple compared to the usual hand brake. All kinds of extra things such as a bell, lock and lights were missing. I ordered these from Taobao, and including a helmet, the price was just about 160rmb. The bike itself cost 300rmb, after we had haggled it down from 350rmb. Quite cheap if you compare to the bike that the German bought for 600rmb. After receiving and installing a panda bell, back and front light and a lock that doesn’t seem to keep any thieves away, my bike was ready for a test drive. On Monday we drove around our nearby streets. The bike is so light, weighing just some kilos, that I am able to carry it up to our fifth floor apartment.

It was a bit stressful at the airport. There were lots of people and queues everywhere. I didn’t go to the main security check but instead to one in the other end of the terminal. There were less people and I came quickly through without problems. Lots of Asian people were stopped in front of me because they had ipads in their bags that they hadn’t taken out from their bags. I had to walk all the way to the other end to buy some Finnish alcohol from the tax free, even though I could have bought the same stuff from the tax free shop on the international flight side. After going through the passport control I bought some sunscreen from the other tax free shop. Before going to the gate I still had some time to buy magazines. People were queuing from two different directions at the magazine shop so I was kind enough to let a women with a stroller pass me, even though I believe she had been queuing longer than most people.

The boarding started fifteen minutes later than originally announced. After everybody in first class had boarded, the person checking tickets in that line let me board the plane. I had a nice seat with lots of space to my legs and bags. I slept most of the flight and didn’t watch any movies.
The flight took almost nine hours and we landed after seven in the morning in Shanghai. However the plane wasn’t able to park before a yellow car would guide it to its parking space. We waited for the car for some fifteen minutes due to the morning rush hour. At the airport, the passport control took only some twenty minutes, as I am used for it to last up to one hour. The bags had already arrived after I had passed the passport control. I still had to wait outside for one hour before I was picked up from the airport by CC, his sister and a friend.

I had slept poorly during the flight, so I had to take a three hour nap at home. After this we had some lunch in a Chinese restaurant and I also managed to work out at the gym for one hour. In the evening we played some card with a friend and I tried to go early to bed.

Finnairilla kotiin

Where is everybody?
The plane was on time but delayed when the heavy rains started

Lensin maanantaina Shanghaista Finnairin suoralla lennolla kotiin.

On Monday I flew from Shanghai to Helsinki with Finnair. CCs friend gave me a ride to the airport and since he had come and picked us up thirty minutes too early, I had too much time to spend on the airport. On the other hand it wasn’t too bad to be early, since there was no queue to the baggage drop. Only the passport check had a long queue, but I got through it in some ten minutes or so. The security check was quick as well. After this I walked around the airport and I couldn’t believe how little people there were. Maybe all flights were moved or cancelled because of the heavy rains? I was the fourth person going into the plane as nobody was queuing when the boarding started. The plane ended up being full, even though I had hoped for there to be less people. The start was delayed by 50 minutes due to the rains and poor visibility. The flight time was nine hours and thirty minutes and I spent that time watching movies and eating everything that was served on the flight. In other words the flight went well.

Bund Sightseeing Tunnel

Most places describe this tourist attraction as tacky, and I won’t argue with that. The sightseeing tunnel, which crosses under the Huangpu river, might in fact, be even worse than I expected. The entrance at the Bund side is located in a pretty good spot and easy to find. Getting from the entrance to the ticket office takes some time, and there are some food places next to the ticket office that you might not know about, if you don’t plan on taking the tour. One way cost 50rmb, which is really expensive, after you have seen what you paid for. There wasn’t that many people taking the tour, and just four people entered the same car with me. I together with another tourist stood in the front of the car to take video and pictures as the three others weren’t even interested in the ride. The trip took maybe some five minutes, and there were just some lights and decorated walls on the way. A voice from a speaker announced in Chinese and English what we were supposed to see. The only part I remember was the volcanic part, were there were some red lights. Even though many places say this is a must try even though they say it is bad, I have to disagree as it isn’t worth it. You could rather spend some coins on the metro, ferry or taxi.

Pudongista Puxiin lautalla

This what the ferry looks like. Picture taken from Puxi side of the river
People waiting for the ferry
The inner deck was almost empty as everybody wanted to be outside

Olen kerran aikaisemmin käynyt Huangpu jokiristeilyllä, mutta tällä kertaa otin ainoastaan lautan joen yli päästäkseen Pudongin puolelta Puxin puolelle. Lautta maksoi noin 0,30euroa, ja käytin ihan metrokorttia. Tullessani paikalle, laiturilla odotti jo jonkin verran ihmisiä, joten menin itsekin sinne odottamaan, vaikka sisällä terminaalissakin pystyi olemaan.

I have once before gone on a river cruise on Huangpu river, but this time I did as the locals do, and took the ferry across the river. The ferry takes you from Pudong to Puxi pretty fast, but the terminal on Pudong side is located pretty far away from Lujiazui metro station. On the other hand the terminal on Puxi side isn’t convenient either, regarding the distance to the metro station, but it is on the Bund, and therefore the locations isn’t as bad as on the other side. The ferry across the river cost only 2rmb, and I was able to use my metro card.

When I arrived at the ferry terminal at Pudong, there were some people already waiting for the ferry, so I joined the crowd. In the end there were quite a crowd waiting. I’m lucky I was in the front as people ran to the ferry when the doors were opened, just to get a seat on the upper deck. I stayed inside, just to avoid the masses. Actually the inside of the ferry was pretty empty. I think taking the ferry across is both a great method of transportation and sightseeing.
