Joulukuusimarkkinoilla

Joulu oli saapunut Hongqiaon kukkamarkkinoille. Paikan päältä saisi ostettua joulukuuset ja kaikki tarvittavat koristeet. Sääli, että meillä ei ole omaa pihaa, sillä muuten voisin koristella sen poroille ja muilla hauskoilla valokoristeilla. Löysin jopa lumi-sprayn, kun Shanghaissa ei paljon lunta löydy. Vähän palloja kuuseen tuli ostettua, mutta muuten joulutarvikkeet eivät mukaan tulleet. Kuusetkin olivat melko kalliit, sillä kuulimme jonkun sanoneen kuusen maksavan lähemmäs 200 euroa. Lisäksi markkinoilta löytyi puhuva lintu. Harakan tapainen kiinalainen lintu istui häkissä ja sanoi Ni hao kun lähestyi kauppaa. Puhuvan linnin saa omakseen kun maksaa noin 150 euroa.

                                                                                                                                                                

Christmas had arrived at Hongqiao flower market. There were lots of decorations as well as Christmas trees and flowers on sale. I wonder if it is only foreign people who buy these things or if Chinese people actually celebrate this as well? Anyways, I bought some decoration balls for our three in Finland. I would have loved to buy so much more, but most of the decoration would be hard to ship. We also found a talking bird at the market. The bird said Ni hao to everyone who entered the shop. The bird cost some 1000rmb and we were told it takes about two months to teach the bird to speak.    

Teehetki

Viimeisenä viikkona Shanghaissa kävimme saksalaisen pariskunnan kanssa teehuoneella. Teetä tuli myös nautittua sitä edellisenä viikonloppuna, kun lähdimme Tianshan teekaupunkiin. Kävelimme ympäri parisen tuntia ja ostelimme tarvikkeita kunnes vastaan tuli pieni liike, jossa myyjä osasi Englantia hyvin. Tutustuimme hänen valikoimaan vähän paremmin, ja antoi meidän maistaa noin kymmentä eri teelajiketta. Hänellä oli kattava lista teestään, ja aloitimme pu’er teellä. Kokeilimme yhtä, joka oli sticky riceilla maustettu, ja maistui todella voimakkaalta riisiltä. Pari oolongia tuli kokeiltua, ja ne ovat aina hyviä, mutta musta tee oli pahaa. Tässä huomaa, kuinka normaali musta tee ei enää maistu niin hyvälle kun on kokeillut monta eri raikasta viherteetä. Taisin ostaa neljää eri sorttia teehetken jälkeen ja matkalla tuli vielä mukaan erilaisia kukkateitä. Markkinat ovat todella kattavat, mutta joskus siellä on liikaa valinnanvaraa, ja on vaikea valita missä kaupassa teet käy loppujen lopuksi ostamassa.

                                                                                                                                                                  

During our last week in Shanghai we went out to the tea house we have been to before and drank some tea and ate some snacks with the German couple. The weekend before that we visited Tianshan tea city in the city center. We walked around for a couple of hours and bought some small items until we found a shop were the seller spoke good English. She introduced her teas and had a comprehensive list to look at. We were given maybe ten different teas to taste before making the decision on which one to buy. I bought some four different sort including oolong and pu’er. It was funny to see how horrible the black tea was compared to the green ones, as my taste has changed quite a lot. The tea city is great, but sometimes there is too much to choose from. 

Ompelutarvikemarkkinoilla

Kävin lauantain Saksalaisen kanssa ompelutarvikemarkkinoilla. Onneksi meillä on samat harrastukset, joten voimme molemmat monta tuntia katsella vetoketjuja, naruja, timantteja jne. Olen CCn kanssa parisen kertaa käynyt, mutta se ei oikein toiminut, joten hyvä sain seuraa. Tällä kertaa kävimme siellä hakemassa vähän tarvikkeita kotiin vietäväksi. Halvimmillaan saa vetoketjuja parillakymmenellä sentillä ja niitit sun muut pienet tavarat maksavat viisi senttiä kappale. Markkinoilta löytyy paljon tavaraa, jotka voivat hienomassa kaupassa maksaa tuplasti enemmän.

                                                                                                                                                                 

On Saturday I went together with my German friend to the sewing accessories market near the Yu yuan garden. I’m happy we have the same hobbies as both can stare at zippers, buttons, and other small things for ages. We both needed to go there and stock up on all the cheap stuff that costs a fortune back in Europe. Even the same things bough in nicer shops in Shanghai might be double the price to what they cost in the market.

Pari viikkoa sitten sunnuntaina Shanghaissa juostiin maratonia. Itse emme kuitenkaan siellä olleet, sillä juoksu alkoi jo kuuden aikoihin, jotta keskustassa ei syntyisi ruuhkia. Puolita päivin ajoimme keskustaan, ja siellä ei mitään jälkiä maratonista näkynyt. Kävimme Bundilla pidetyissä Euroopan ruokamarkkinoilla. Paikalla oli noin kaksikymmentä kojua ja sekä ulkomaalaiset että kiinalaiset olivat maistelemassa eri ruokia harmaassa säässä. Ostimme ensiksi palan toffee-omenapiirakkaa Alankomaista. Sitten kokeiltiin Puolalaista makkaraa, joka maistui paljon paremmalta kun kaikki kiinan ihme makkarat, joita olen aikaisemmin maistanut. Lopuksi vielä vähän lihaa ja perunaa Ranskalaisessa paikassa. Loppuun vielä ostettiin vähän suklaata Itävallasta. 

                                                                                                                                                               

Shanghai marathon was held a couple of weeks ago on Sunday. On the same day we decided to go to the city. Luckily the marathon had ended early, so that there wouldn’t be problems with the traffic. We parked in one of the only free places we know of that is always free and walked to the southern part of the Bund. The European Food Market was located on the boardwalk. We started by eating some Dutch pie. After this we ate a Polish sausage. We still had space for some French beef and potatoes. In the end we bought some chocolate from Austria. The market was quite empty, but on the other hand it wasn’t the best weather and it had already been open for some weeks so no wonder it wasn’t packed with people. Quite a good mix of both Chinese and foreign people could be seen in the place. 

Baobao laukku

Tässä taas laukku, josta en aluksi pitänyt, mutta löytäessäni sen tässä kuosissa, olihan se pakko saada. Normaalisti baobao laukut löytyvät eri värissä, ja halvimmat ovat muovisia ja kiiltäviä kun taas parempi laatuiset ovat sileämpiä. Jälleen kerran hinta markkinoilla oli lähemmäs sataa euroa alkaessani tinkimissodan. En ensimmäisellä kerralla halvalla saanut, joten seuraavalla kerralla, kun minulla oli asiaa markkinoilla, kävin toisessa liikkeessä vähän korkeammalla hinnalla. Lopputulos oli, että laukun sain vähän yli 20 eurolla. Olisin halunnut isomman, mutta sellaista ei mistään löytynyt. Laukku mahtuu hyvin isomman laukun sisään ostoskassiksi, tai sitten siitä tulee uusi työlaukku. Monella kiinalaisella näkyy tämä laukku käytössä, mutta onneksi ei ole sanan värinen.

                                                                                                                                                                   

Here again is a bag that I didn’t like when I first saw it. These were fashionable in Singapore a year ago, but not until I found it in this color combination, did I realize that I wanted it. Not all stalls in the market had it, so it was hard to get it for a cheap price. At first some of them had the price as high as 600rmb. Some stalls sold plastic ones in different colors, but only those selling the better quality ones, with smooth finish, looked good. I didn’t buy the bag during the first trip, but the second time, when I was hunting for some other things in the market. In the end one of the sellers followed me for a good five minutes until she realized I wouldn’t change my price, and I got it for 140rmb. Still not what I wanted to pay, but one of the other sellers was genuinely surprised I could buy it so cheaply.

Perjantaina suunnittelin, mitä me voisimme viikonloppuna tehdä. Ajattelin, että voisimme lähteä Hongqiaon kukkamarkkinoille, sillä se on niin pitkällä, ja metrolla sinne ei oikein halua lähteä. No enpä tätä idea CClle sanonut, mutta lauantaina CC heräsi päiväunilta ja sanoi, että lähdetäänkö kukkamarkkinoille? Kysyin, että mistä hän tällaisen idean keksi, ja hän sanoi, että minä olin sen hänen unessaan sanonut. Noniin eli telepatia täälläpäin ainakin toimii!

Matka autolla kesti noin tunnin, ja käytimme auton gpsn sijaan kännykkäni navigaattoria. Tämä toimi yllättävän hyvin, sillä se varoitti edessä olevista ruuhkista. Emme olleet paikkaa ensin löytää, mutta lopulta olimme perillä. Hongqiaon kukkamarkkinoilla oli paljon muutakin tavaraa. Kukkakimppujen, sisä-, ulko- ja tekokukkien lisäksi paikan päältä pystyi ostamaan paljon astioita ja keittiötarvikkeita. Löysimme myös paljon sisutusliikkeitä. Olisin halunnut ostaa vaikka mitä, mutta mukaan tuli vain jokunen astia ja orkidea kotiin. Kukan valinta oli vaikea, sillä markkinoilla oli ainakin viisi paikkaa, jotka möivät vain orkideoita. Värejä ja kokoja oli aivan liikaa, joten lopulta päädyin simppeliin valkoiseen. Orkideat eivät pidä Shanghain lämmöstä, joten saapa nähdä kuinka kauan se pysyy hengissä.

                                                                                                                                                            

On Saturday we headed over to the Hongqiao flower market. It is quite far away from our home, so I have never gone there before. Imagine buying flowers and taking them back by metro, it would not work at all. It took about one hour by car. The place was hard to find, but finally we came to the right place. Even though it is called a flower market, the place has so much more. In addition to all sorts of bouquets, home and outdoor plants, even plastic flowers, the market has also a wide selection of kitchenware and home decoration. I found so many things that I wanted to buy, but at this point there is no need for those things. One of these items included an old Chinese style sofa for two people.. hehe. Now maybe I can’t fit it in anywhere. I had also a problem with selecting an orchid. There were five shops specialized in selling just orchids and finding the right style and color took ages. I ended up taking a simple white one, as there were too many colors to choose just one. On the other hand orchids do not like the heat in Shanghai so let’s see how long it stays alive.

Ennen kun palasin kesällä Suomeen, ehdin poiketa tee-markkinoilla. Olin paikasta lukenut, mutta en oikein osannut kuvitella, miltä teemarkkinat oikeasti näyttävät. Kolme kerrosta ja kolme rakennusta. Ensimmäisessä kerroksessa myytiin perus vihreää teetä ja muita pieniä sekoituspakkauksia. Toisessa kerroksessa oli Pu´er teetä, eli vihreän ja mustan teen välimuoto. Toisessa ja ylimmässä kerroksessa oli myös tarvikkeita, kuten kuppeja ja kannuja. Kävimme kahdessa liikkeessä ostamassa teetä, ja molemmissa tarjottiin teetä juotavaksi. Ensimmäisessä kokeilimme eri kukka- ja hedelmä- tee makuja, mutta toisessa istuimme jo yli tunnin juomassa. Myyjä piti meille pienimuotoisen tee seremonian ja kokeilimme kahta tai kolme eri Puer teetä ja yhtä Oolong teetä. Puer teissä hinta vaihteli iän mukaan. Kuusi vuotta vanha pakkaus maksoi yli viisitoista euroa, kun taas yli kymmenen vuotta vanha maksoi jo lähemmäs sata euroa. Näitä teekakku-pakkauksia kannattaisi siis ostaa säilytykseen, ja ottaa esiin sitten viiden vuoden kuluttua.

                                                                                                                                                            

Before going back to Finland in the summer, I had some time to visit the tianshan tea city. It was quite far away, on the other side of the city. I didn’t know what to expect from the city, but it consisted of three buildings with different stuff on three floors. The first floor had some basic green tea and some cute gift sets. On this floor we tried some flower and fruit tea. I also bought some nice tea, which are flowers, that open up when put into hot water. On the second floor we drank Puer tea for a couple of hours. Most shops conduct tea ceremonies for potential customers, but after drinking a lot, you are obliged to buy. Puer tea gets better with age, so the six year old package that I bought cost some 100rmb where as a package that is over ten years old cost closer to 800rmb. The third floor had cups and other tea accessories. The place is quite good, but you have to know wht kind of tea you are looking for before heading this way.

Jo toinen viikonloppu tuli vietettyä samaan malliin, kuin viimeviikonloppunakin. Lauantaina käytiin räätälimarkkinoilla ja sunnuntaina S&T markkinoilla. Minun vakioliikkeellä oi jotain vaatteita poistohinnoin, joten varasin itselleni Dolce and Gabbanan hameen. Liikkeessä ei kuitenkaan ollut paikan pomo, vaan jotkut muut myyjät, joita en aikaisemmin ollut nähnyt. Sanoin, että olin jo pomon kanssa jutellut hinnasta, mutta myyjä halusi varmistaa asian, ja pyysi minun näyttävän hinnan kirjoitettuna. Puhelimen netti ei kuitenkaan toiminut, joten sanoin, että soita itse pomollesi ja kysele. Ei tarvinnut soittaa, vaan sain hameen siihen hintaan kun sen piti ollakin. Olen aika varma, että pomo juhlii yöt pitkät ja saapuu itse liikkeeseen vasta iltapäivällä, joten muut alaiset eivät uskalla häiritä häntä.

Samasta liikkeestä oli tarkoitus ostaa ballerinaa tossut, jotka joustavat. Emme päässeet hinnasta yhteisymmärrykseen, joten markkinoilla lähdin metsästämään vastaavia. Ekasta liikkeestä löytyi, mutta ei oikeata kokoa. Viidennessä kenkäliikkeessä tuli vastaan samanmalliset, ja sain ne viidellätoista eurolla. Myyjä yritti saada minua maksamaan kolme euroa lisään, sillä selityksellä, että hän voisi syödä. Muut myyjät olivat siis liikkeessä lounaalla. Olen tietoinen, etteivät myyjät myy, mikäli hinta menee liian alas, joten vastasin vain että myy nyt äkkiä ne kengät niin pääset syömään itsekin. Hehe. Toimi hyvin.

Olen etsinyt hyvää työlaukkua, ja ohi mennessä huomasin kivan värisen MK laukun. Myyjälle sanoin tuttuun tapaan, että maksan laukusta viisitoista euroa ja olin jo matkalla ulos kun hän sanoi perääni että sopii. Sinisen laukun sisällä oli pienempi laukku, johon voi kiinnittää pitkän olkahihnan, mutta se sopii myös sisä pussina, sillä isoa laukkua ei voi sulkee vetoketjulla.

Loppuun voi lisätä, että kävin vielä kaupassa ostamassa suurimaksi osaa länsimaalaisia tuotteita, kuten jauhelihaa, muroja ja tonnikalaa, ja kassillinen ruokaa maksoi enemmän kun nämä tuotteet yhteensä. Eli kalleimmat tuotteet Shanghaissa ovat usein ruokatuotteet.

                                                                                                                                                                   

This weekend was almost the same as last weekend. On Saturday we went to the tailor market and on Sunday we went to the S&T market. I had reserved a skirt in my favourite shop, as the seller had it on sale. When I arrived at her shop, she wasn’t there. Instead there were a couple of other sellers that I didn’t know. I told them that I had already discussed the price, but they wanted proof. Unfortunately my mobile data didn’t work, so I couldn’t show them, and asked them to call her instead. I believe the owner is partying all the time and only shows up in the shop in the afternoon, so they didn’t call her, and gave the skirt to me for the price that I said.

I had wanted to buy ballerina flats from the same shop, but they were too expensive. I looked around and found the similar one that I wanted, but they didn’t have size 39! So I continued looking and in the fifth store they had the same model and perfect size. I didn’t bargain a lot but the seller still tried to get me to pay 20rmb more, so that she could also “afford eating” like the rest of the sellers in the store. I know they would never sell if they don’t make a profit, so I stuck to my original price of 100rmb and got the pair.

I also waked past a bag shop and found this color that I like a lot. I asked the price but as usually I told the seller I would buy it for 100rmb and walked out. In 3 seconds he was ready to sell it for that price. I got two bags, one large and one in side that also has a long strap. Since the large bag can’t be closed, the small one comes in handy to keep valuables safer.

Olen monesta Shanghain oppaasta lukenut lintu ja ötökkä markkinoista, mutta en ole vaivautunut menemään sinne aikaisemmin. Paikka oli loppujen lopuksi ihan käynnin arvoinen, sillä muualla ei tule vastaan markkinoita, jossa heinäsirkat ja linnut laulavat kovaan ääneen. Vaikka markkinat nyt suurimmaksi osaksi möi sekä lintuja ja häkkejä, että heinäsirkkoja tappeluita varten, paikalla oli myös paljon paikkoja jotka möivät eläimiä, kaloja, kukkia, eläintarvikkeita ja vanhoja kiinalaisia koruja. Kiersin ympäri ja huomasin naisen, joka syötti heinäsirkkoja pistämällä pienen pavun jokaisen heinäsirkan häkkiin. Meillähän on nyt kotona ollut koira jonkin aikaa, joten ostin sille shampoota, harjan ja pureskelutikkuja noin seitsemällä eurolla.

                                                                                                                                                                

The bird and insect market can be found in lots of guide books if you want to experience the real Shanghai market, but I haven’t gone there until now. The market wasn’t as big as I had imagined but still pretty cool. The sound might be a bit overwhelming with thousands of crickets and birds singing. As the name of the market already explains, most sellers sold birds and bird cages or crickets to use in cricket fights. The rest of the shops had some other small animals, animal products, fish, flowers or old Chinese jewelry. As I walked around I saw a woman feeding the crickets by putting a bean inside their cage. I wasn’t looking to buy any cricket fighter, but I stumbled upon a shop selling pretty cheap dog products, so I bought shampoo for 30rmb, a comb for 10rmb and some snack for 9rmb.
