Peasant art shop

Keskustassa kävellessämme pikkukatua pitkin, huomasin pienessä liikkeessä kiinalaisia ”maalais”- maalauksia, joita itse maalasin yli vuosi sitten amerikkalaisten oppilaiden kanssa joissain pikku kylässä. Teemana on aina jotain kiinalaiseen elämään liittyvää.

While we walked along a road in the city I noticed a small shop window with peasant art. I had painted peasant paintings in a village with some American students some year ago, so I had to take look. The shop was in the yard of a larger house, and it seems like not many people actually goes there. The shopkeeper was nice and answered our questions in both Chinese and English. I bought cards and two A5 paper holders. I like the simple but yet colorful of design of the peasant art.

Framing pictures

Some handwork waiting to get frames
A somewhat chaotic work space

Different frame material to choose from
In the print shop waiting for our pictures

Viime vuonna kävimme Anqingissa teettämässä taulut parille käsityölle. Tänä vuonna päätimme käydä samassa paikassa teettämässä raamit valokuville. Valokuvat printattiin Shanghain kameramarkkinoilla.

We framed some of my handwork last year and during the New Year in Anqing we did it again. This time I had some pictures from Paris that I wanted to frame. In Shanghai, we got the Photography equipment market, where we printed out five four large pictures and about double the amount of smaller ones. The small ones we put into Ikea frames, but the larger ones needs something nicer. We took the pictures with us to Anqing, where we have a shop with handwork that we visit every time we go to the city. There is a nice lady that recognizes us, mainly since I’m her only foreign customer. Even though we came with the pictures for framing one day before New Year, she was willing to take them. She told us she was so busy that she didn’t even have time to sleep. She works by herself and during the holiday she had some fifty frames to make. She didn’t have time to finish them, but an uncle will bring them to Shanghai when he gets here next month. Framing four pictures, during a busy season, set us back by only 100rmb.

Bringing New Year's wishes

People playing mahjong in the front yard

Tullessamme perhe halusi tarjota meille ruokaa, mutta jätin tällä kertaa syömättä, sillä mikäli vähänkin syö, huomaamattakaan he täyttävät koko lautasen täyteen. Perhe yritti kaiken tavoin saada minut innostumaan heidän oudoista liharuoista, mutta sain lopuksi hedelmiä ja leipää. Kelpasi minulle paljon paremmin.

Here are some pictures from when we visited some friends of the family after the New Year. It is a tradition to go to family members and friends to wish them a happy New Year. The family would have liked us to join them for dinner. But CC and I rather played some mahjong. This didn’t work, however, and we had to join them at the table even though we didn’t eat. CC had food poisoning from the day before and I feel it is a bit uncomfortable to eat with a big group of Chinese people as they will fill up my plate with food I have a hard time eating. To give an example of food I have to eat at the relative’s house is meat and fish with lots of bones that you just casually spit onto the table or pieces of fat that makes you almost throw up as it is too hard to swallow. Yes, so therefore I didn’t participate in their dinner, but I was given fruit and bread that worked better for me.

We spent some six hours in the tiny village, where I had been twice before, once just some days earlier, so there wasn’t much to do. Luckily we came there with two cars, so I could leave with CC before the rest of them had dinner. Before we left I had the chance to wash my hair in their outdoor kitchen. We got some warm water in a large bowl and some shampoo and I got clean hair again. As I had written before, showering was extremely hard, as they only got cold water at home.

Hillside temple

----------------------

The second stop on our hike up the mountain in Anqing was this beautiful temple area. I have visited many temples, but this was among the best ones. Maybe since there were almost no people. Like most temples, they have an entrance where one of the goods is seated in the center and some grotesque looking figures protect it on along the walls. The main temple, which is usually much higher, had three large Buddha statues and some 18 smaller Chinese statues. In the back of the temple we could find the main God. The temple was beautifully decorated inside, better than most. And it is a mix of so many different types of religions. I wonder if Chinese people even are aware of how many religions they have gathered inside one temple: Buddhism, Hinduism, and some local Chinese religions.

Dalongshan Forest Park

-----------------------

During Spring Festival we visited a mountain nearby Anqing. It was the first day of the New Year, so not that many people were doing the same thing as we. The weather was great, a bit too windy, but sunny. We hiked up the mountain and visited a temple which I will post about next. After the temple visit we hiked even further up. At some points the stairs were narrow and it was quite uncomfortable to have Ugg boots and not sneakers on. My bad. Anyways, there were lots of different rock formations and the path led us to some interesting places. Sometimes we walked inside small tunnels under large rocks and sometimes we walked on small bridges made out of stone. The hike was much easier than Huangshan, one of the most famous mountains in China, which we visited in the summer, but it was still somewhat challenging. Once again it was interesting noticing the behavior of Chinese people. Some women wore high heels, while visiting the mountain, like I said; it was already though with boots on, so I can’t imagine any one going up there with heels on. The second thing is the habit of throwing trash into the wild. There was a trash can just next to a women who decided to throw her trash into a bush..

Kolmannet häät Kiinassa

Bedroom decorated for the couple
Poster of babies in the newly weds room to bring "baby luck"

No uudestaan koputtamaan, ja lisään rahaa hänen kavereilleen.

-------------------

In the beginning of February, CCs good friend got married. That is the reason why we had to drive some 14 hours. The wedding was quite similar to the two weddings I had attended before in China. In the morning, or around ten o’clock, the groom goes and picks up the bride from her home, or in this case from the hotel room. The groom, with his friends, needs to bribe the bride’s friends to let him in. In my opinion, they had planned it quite cleverly, and the bride was actually in another room, on another floor. When they finally found her, they had some games before they could take her with them and drive to the couple’s new home. About eight cars drove after each other to the nearby condo. We didn’t spend much time there, but the couple seemed to have some traditional meal before we all left for the wedding banquet.

There were already some 100 people in the wedding reception. We followed the bride and groom do some westernized customs, such as light a candle, exchange rings etc. There was a speaker, who talked so loud my ears hurt. After some music and light effects the couple’s parent entered the stage and gave a speech. The thing I like the least is the shouting the couple has to do. When they say “I do”, it isn’t peaceful or romantic, it is more like a competition on who’s louder. After this we were ushered into a private room to have dinner. We had actually been to the same place the day before when we arrived in the evening, and had the exact same food. Now I know what rehearsal dinner stands for.. We didn’t stay after the dinner, but rather leave straight away and drive 8h to get to CCs hometown. Once again we got stuck in traffic for ages and it was one of the worst drives in my life!

Kiinalainen pesula

People sleeping or watching movies on their personal TV screen in the bath house relaxing area

-----------------------

CC didn’t dare take me to visit relatives, so we ended up one evening going to a bath house. As we went there at ten o’clock I was told that there wouldn’t be many women, since usually more men go there. Men and women have their separate shower and change rooms, so after getting slippers I had to make it by myself. When I got to the locker, which one of the workers helped opening up (turned out later on that you need both your own electric key as well as the workers key to open up lockers), I was chocked to not find any towels. I sent some messages to CC and figured out later that you just have to walk naked into the washing area.

As I got to the washing area, there were about five people waiting for the showers. I have noticed that Chinese women wash for ages. It might take over thirty minutes for them to wash in public showers such as at the gym, and I have no idea how they can use that much time. Anyways, I had to wait for a while until one woman in one of the ten showers asked if I wanted to share the shower with her. Of course she just spoke Chinese, but I nicely declined her offer. After a while another woman looked at me, went back to the shower and came out again, the second time she told me I could use the shower and left. All things needed, such as shampoo and other necessary things were available in every shower. The washing area also included a steam room that wasn’t working, a small pool for five people, two Chinese style tubs, a massage area and some showers in a row with chairs, where you can wash yourself without needing to stand up.

After the shower I went back to the changing room where a worker handed me a tiny towel. After getting somewhat dry, I was handed a two piece pyjama like set to put on. I dried my hair and went to the second floor where both men and women can hang out. When CC also had finished washing we went to a large room with rows of seats with private TV screens. We took two seats and you could basically sleep in them. The sound came from the head rest, so you could barely hear what others were watching. There were some movies, but we didn’t like spending too much time there. In addition, people could get massages there and some where smoking so it wasn’t the most comfortable place, even though they had provided us with water and blankets.

We moved on to another room, which was almost like a sauna. In the heated room, you could either sit or lay down, with a stone pillow to rest your head on. It was actually really comfortable in the hot room with the hard pillow and the pyjamas on, but if you’d like to stay in the bath house over the night you have to pay extra. So after the washing, resting and relaxing we went back downstairs and changed. The bath house also had some other entertainment like KTV, but for most things you need to pay extra. Jus the washing and the things were included and cost 59rmb for one person. So not the cheapest place for common Chinese people who needs to wash, but rather a place where they like to spend time with their friends and family.

Happy Chinese New Year! This year will be the year of the monkey and it will start on the 8th of February. The new year has started with what sounds like war. The fireworks and firecrackers that they use here have really loud explosion sounds. I really wonder how this common practice of setting of these explosions is really liked by everyone. Of course the reason behind this is to attract the fortune gods attention and so on, but some of the firecrackers they use are so loud that your ears hurt if you accidentally walk too nearby. In addition I have heard that there are lots of accidents in China, as nothing is done to prevent fires etc. Fireworks are set of straight next to high rise building, so don’t wonder at all when one of the fireworks crashes into an apartment and sets it on fire. Regarding fire safety I will have another interesting moment I will share more about in another post about New Year’s celebration here in Anqing. Another thing good mentioning is that in Shanghai it is forbidden to set off fireworks and firecrackers in the city. The police will fine people some 500rmb as well as sellers of fireworks will get really high fines. Many Chinese citizens are not happy they restrict their traditions, but it is one of the best ways to prevent pollutions, as the air in Shanghai has been better this winter than it has been the past two years.

Update: I added the picture from the day after New Year’s Eve with all the paper and trash left behind from the fireworks and firecrackers. The paper cannot be cleaned on the day of New Year, because that means that all the money you will earn during the year will swept away as well! The same thing regarding cleaning and washing during the first day of New Year, it is strictly forbidden.

Matkan varrella on siis monta tietullia, jossa maksetaan noin eurosta kahteenkymmeneen euroon.

---------------------

On Monday we woke up at five o’clock to early start driving towards a city in northern Anhui province. The following day was the wedding of one of CCs best friends, so we thought it would be good to arrive there early. The city was just some 450km away from Shanghai, so CC guessed it would take five hours and I estimated the trip to take at least eight hours. We were both wrong, as the trip took just fourteen hours! The reason for this were lots of traffic jams along the way. Especially as we got closer to Nanjing, the traffic was the most horrible thing that I have ever witnessed. We were at some point stuck in traffic for over an hour and couldn’t move anywhere. People started getting out of their cars, peeing in the bushes, walking along the highway and cooking some instant noodles on the road..

In addition to these traffic jams we saw lots of road accidents, which I think lead to most traffic jams. it had snowed the day before, and as most Chinese people here in the south/west part don’t have winter tires, I’m not surprised at all of they crashed into each other, as crazily as Chinese people drive! The highway had just two lanes, which was bad as millions of people had chosen the same path as we had. I don’t think driving to the city would otherwise have been a problem, if it wasn’t for Chinese Spring Festival, the time of the year when everyone has to go home. After this trip I think I will avoid any further road trips in China.

Zhaojialou -ruokakaupunki

Lots of people on the narrow street buying food
Here are some Chinese sweets
Salted meat
Three ducks for 100rmb (15euros)
Chinese like to travel during the holidays, so no wonder this place was full
Map over the ancient city

Sukulaiset pyysivät meidät mukaan pienelle päiväretkelle. Autolla ajoimme noin puolisen tuntia kunnes saavuimme tähän kaupunkiin.

Some relatives invited us to join them on a day trip to Zhaojialou ancient city. The city was a thirty minute drive away and when we arrived finding a parking spot wasn't an easy task to do. The city's streets were full of people. They street sellers offered all kinds of food so we looked around for a while a bought some snack that we ate together with some noodles in a restaurant. The city wasn't as authentic and old as others I have been to, and the main attraction was just the food, so nothing special to see.

Uuden vuoden rukoukset

In front of the temple with the candles on the right and the bonfire on the left
Here are some paper money, candles and incense sticks that we used during the preying outside the temple
Emme oikeata rahaa käyttäneet, vaan ostamamme paperikasan.

We arrived early at the temple, which was great since most people came around twelve. We bought the following things before entering the temple area: incense, large candles, money and about two meter tall sticks. I actually thought that we were buying fireworks since the incenses were so tall. Outside the temple we set the candles on fire and with the candles in hand bowed three times in four directions. We repeated this with the oversized incenses as well as with the regular ones one at a time. When doing our bowing in all four directions we were also supposed to make wishes of health, happiness, wealth etc. After every step we put them at their designated spot or threw the used ones into the fire. The last act was to burn some money. Chinese people like given their ancestors all kinds of things so “fake money” is really popular. It probably signifies wealth to the one throwing the money into the fire. I wanted to enter the temple as well, so we had to pay 5rmb per person to enter. I didn’t need or maybe wasn’t allowed to pray in front of the god statues, so I just followed my boyfriend around the temple as he made his way from one statue to the next one. The temple was making lots of money as most people added some coins to every statues collection box. I actually don’t know if it was a Buddhist temple or not, as some statues looked more like Hindu or Chinese folk gods. As we made our way back home a bit before twelve, the temple ground was filled with people waiving their sticks and candles in all directions. After experiencing this smoke filled celebration I would not like to visit a larger temple such as Jing An where there is even more people.

Lampaan vuosi alkakoon

Hyvää kiinalaista uutta vuotta! Onkohan nyt sitten lampaan vai vuohen vuosi, sillä kiinalaiset eivät kauheasti erota näitä kahta. Kiinalaista uutta vuotta odotellessa katsomme kotona uuden vuoden gaalaa tveestä. Jostain syystä aikataulut eivät oikein toimineet, joten uuden vuoden illallinen jäi syömättä ja sen sijaan sain kokata lihaa ja perunaa illalliseksi. Nyt olisi tarkoituksena askarella vähän paperikoristeita ennen kuin me kello kahdeltatoista menemme temppeliin. Saa nähdä onko myös kaikki muut alueen ihmiset päättäneet samaan aikaan käydä temppelissä siunautumassa  uutta vuotta varten?

Happy Chinese New Year! I’m not sure if this year is the year of the lamb, sheep or goat, as Chinese people don’t separate between these three and just uses one of them when speaking about the new year. For now we do as the rest of the population and look at the new year gala on TV. I should also do some paper cutting before we head over to the nearby temple to receive some new year’s blessings. Let’s see how many people have decided to do the same thing as we are at twelve o’clock?

In China I have seen lots of couples wearing the same clothing or shoes. The couple-shoe is more popular and this means that both the girl and the boy has the same brand, style and colored shoes on at the same time. This was taken to an extreme as I was given a pair of New Balance shoes as a present, so that I would be part of a group of four people having the exact same shoes. NB shoes as well as red color isn’t my favorites, but as both of them are really popular in China, I better get used to them both. The shoes I got are part of NB limited edition collection for the Year of the Horse, so I won’t be getting these anywhere later on. The shoes are comfortable, and as I just threw away my NB shoes I bought in a market, I will have some use of these, even though the color only goes with black and not that much else.

Punaviiniaamupalasta karaokeen

Some of the houses in the area have their own backyards

One of the many rivers that isn't too clean

                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

On the third day together with the Chinese family all days started to look the same. All dinners had been together with the family and relatives and the food had basically been the same or pretty similar dishes been served. In the days we had been a lot to the daughters place to hang out. I had also been used to watch them play card games every day. The rules had started to become clearer to me, but as they play with money I hadn’t participated. On Saturday morning I was told we were going out to eat. I supposed we were going to a restaurant, but no, I was wrong. We went to a Chinese mans home, where the mother and daughter with her boyfriend were already eating. I tried to stick to a meet tasting like roast beef, but as always the family gave me all the weird stuff to try. Some of the things looked and tasted a bit like some sort of inner organs. I also tried to decline the offer of red wine with the meal, but the host was really trying to make me have a good breakfast, so I had to accept. After we had eaten, we went to the daughters place, where they started to play the card game once again.

I had in the morning said that today I needed to go back to my hotel, so I could have a shower. I was told I could do it at their house, but as I kindly refused they told me that after dinner I could go. Dinner was once again with family and relatives, and as we were more than ten persons, everybody couldn't eat at the same time. For the first time I was offered rice in the beginning of the meal. Before this rice had been eaten in the end, if it was offered at all during the meal. After I had finished I went to take a nap, as it didn't seem like I would have the chance to go and take a shower. I had before seen as family members vanished during dinners to bedrooms for a quick nap, so I did the same. I was woken up thirty minutes later, as everybody was going to KTV.

We got to the KTV-place by car, moped and bicycle as we were so many persons. The one cycling was even before us there as the driver was a newbie and had problems finding a parking spot in the garage. We ended up being thirteen people in the karaoke room as even the daughters boyfriends brother and girlfriend joined us. All the men sang really well, and no one needed to use the song to be played, just the music, so just their voice could be heard. Even the women were great singers, and as one of the aunts was a singer-actor, she could sing with a great opera voice. She ended up singing most of the songs, as her voice was so great. I sang two songs, just to please the audience, but as the other ones had so great singing voices I decided not to sing more in that group even though they had wanted me to sing more. It was also challenging to find a song to sing as most of the artists were hip-hoppers or had music videos that I didn't want the children and older people to see. Most of the Chinese songs music videos are non existing and instead the video is from a concert. After two hours our time ended in the KTV and I could finally go to my own hotel room and have a shower and take a rest after spending three days with the Chinese family for Spring Festival celebrations.
