Even though it hasn’t been widely marketed, the observatory of Shanghai Tower has been open for a while. Shanghai Tower is the newest and highest skyscraper in Lujiazui, and on top of that the second tallest in the world. Regardless, the observatory is the highest in the world, so that has to count for something, right? I thought we had picked the perfect day; sunny weather. It turned out sunny weather at 546 meters isn’t that ideal. The observatory was quite hot and the air wasn’t clear enough to see to the other side of the river even. In other words the visibility was poor and we could only see the skyscrapers next to us.

Compared to the SWFC, which is the second tallest tower next door, the Shanghai Tower observatory felt safer for people like me, who are afraid of heights, since it doesn’t have any glass floor. In addition, the building has a 360 degree view, while from the SWFC you can only look two ways. Overall the experience of going to the observatory is quite similar in both skyscrapers. Both start from the cellar, where there is some sort of exhibition. Then there is an elevator that speeds up to the top without making any stops in less than a minute. This means that the Shanghai Tower elevator’s fastest speed was 18 m/s. You don’t feel the speed in any other way than the pressure building in your ears.

I have to say that the Shanghai Tower was in that way much more boring, since it only offered a small shop and café, and only had one floor of access at the top. The SWFC had two or three floors that you could access and quite a large shop upstairs. Shanghai Tower did have a gift shop at the bottom, but it didn’t offer anything interesting. In the end a good reminder for anyone interested in going to the tower; take your passport or ID, since they will check it before letting you buy tickets. We had a Chinese woman in front who barely made it in, because she didn’t take any valid ID with her. 

Nyt on maailman korkein näköalapaikka koettu. Näköalapaikka sijaitsee 118. kerroksessa uudessa Shanghai Towerissa. Pilvenpiirtäjä on kuulemma todella ekologisesti rakennettu, sillä se mm. kerää sadevettä ja tuplalasien takia ei tuhlaa lämmitystä. Kyttäsin pitkään, että milloin meillä olisi aurinkoinen päivä täällä Shanghaissa. Sää ei kuitenkaan loppujenlopuksi ollut se paras, sillä yli 500 metrin korkeudessa oli melko pilvistä. Emme siis nähneet paljon muuta kuin viereiset pilvenpiirtäjät.

Näköalakerrokseen pääsi huippunopealla hissillä, joka kulkee nopeimmillaan 18 m/s. Matka huipulle kestää alle minuutin! Hissi on sen verran vakaa, ettei muuten kuin korvien ilmanpaineessa eroa huomaa. Shanghai Tower on SWFC verrattuna turvallisemman oloinen, sillä täällä ei ollut lasitettua lattiaa. Lisäksi tornissa oli 360-asteen näkymät, kun taas SWFCssä näki vain kahteen suuntaan. Muuten siellä ei oikeastaan ollut mitään sen kummallisempaa. Vähän kyllä harmitti näkyvyyden puute, mutta eipäs sille oikeastaan mitään voi tehdä. 

Changes in Chuansha

I wonder if our street is completely dark because they use all power to light up this part of town? For some reason our street lights haven’t worked in a while, when the street a couple of blocks away has lots of colorful street lightning on. The walkway in the pictures is new and I find it quite nice. They started building on it when I was still doing my internship. The authorities of Chuansha, where I have lived most of the time in China, have made some upgrades to the town since Disney opened up nearby. This is the best of their attempts to make the area more “tourist appropriate”, as in the past it has been quite left out of Shanghai’s development. In addition, lots of hotels have been renewed and streets are also getting a makeover. This means that most roads are closed near our home, making it quite complicated to drive out from the town. More things will change around this part of town in the near future. 

Kuvissa taitaa olla syy siihen, miksi meidän kadulla ei enää iltaisin ole valoja päällä. Parin korttelin päässä olevalle kadulle on tehty melkoinen muodonmuutos, kun siihen lisättiin jouluvaloja, jotka syttyvät vuoden jokaisena iltana. Valot vaihtavat väriä ja tuovat tunnelmaa kadulle, mutta kun se katu jatkuu monta kilometriä eteenpäin, niin ihmettelen jos se oikeasti on vienyt meidän kadun sähköt. Olen asunut Chuanshan ”kaupungissa” viimeiset pari vuotta, ja tähän paikkaan ei siinä aikana ole oikeastaan kauheasti satsattu jos vertaa muuhun Shanghaihin. Nyt kun Disney avattiin ihan kulman taakse, niin tulikin kiire uusia kaikki, jotta turistit viihtyisivät täällä sen sijaan, että he lähtisivät keskustaan asti. Tämä kävelykatu/rakentelma taitaa olla parhaimmasta päästä. Paljon muutakin on uusittu täällä, kuten esim. hotellit ja kadut. Lisäksi muitakin muutoksia on tulossa, joten niistä sitten lisää myöhemmin. 

The Grey Ocean

Together with some of my husband’s football friends and their kids, we went to have a look at the ocean. The ocean is not that far away, just about some 15 minutes’ drive from our home. The weather had turned grey and the ocean was kind of depressing to look at. We had to take an electric bus to the shore, since otherwise we would have needed to walk some 10 km. The area will drastically change next year, as there are plans to change the place to some sort of beach resort. There were already lots of building sites, so it will be interesting to see what they will make of the place.

Kävimme mieheni jalkapallokavereiden ja heidän lasten kanssa katsomassa merta. Aamupäivällä oli ollut ihan hyvä sää, mutta iltapäivällä oli jo niin pilvistä, että meri oli kyllä melko masentava. Hyppäsimme sähköbussin kyytiin, sillä matka parkkipaikasta meren ääreen oli noin 10km. Ensi vuonna kuulemma kaikki tulee muuttumaan, kun alueelle rakennetaan jonkin sortin rantahotellialue. Jo nyt alueella oli paljon rakennustyömaita.

Shanghain lähettyvillä on usea vanhanajan vesikaupunkia. Olen käynyt kahdessa, mutta päätimme ajaa Zhujiajiao-kaupunkiin, sillä se on tunnetuin. Vaikka kaupunki sijaitsee vain noin puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä, matka kesti ruuhkien takia paljon pidempään. Sisäänpääsy kaupunkiin on kuulemma parisen euroa, mutta sillä emme tulleet portin kautta, vaan parkkipaikalta, emme tarvinneet maksaa mitään. Kaupunki visiitti ei oikein mennyt niin kuin olin ajatellut, sillä itse käyn mielelläni katsomassa pari turistinähtävyyttä, vähän ostoksilla ja ehkä vielä syömässä jotain paikallista, tai vain nauttimassa teen. Reissu tehtiin CCn, hänen siskonsa ja siskon miehen kanssa, ja he eivät jaa samaa näkemystä hyvästä kaupunkikierroksesta. Toisin sanonen kävelimme vain kaupungin päästä päähän, ja siihen kului noin tunti. Eli käytimme tulo- ja paluumatkaan yli kolme tuntia ja kaupunki käytiin läpi tunnissa. Onneksi sentään yhtä ohutta leipää tuli sentään maistettua. Minua erityisesti viehätti talot, jotka oli maalattu värikkäästi tai muokattu uudemmaksi pilaamatta vanhaa tunnelmaa. Myös kukka asetelmat kaduilla ja pienten liikkeiden sisustukset olivat hienot.

There are quite a few ancient water towns nearby Shanghai. I have been to two of them, and now we chose Zhujiajiao, the most famous one as our next destination. The town was an hour and half away by car, but the trip lasted somewhat longer due to horrific traffic jams along the way. As we finally arrived the town was not crowded as winter and middle of the week is not the high season. The perfect city trip for me would be to see some sights, do some shopping and have lunch or a drink. But not with these people.. I made the trip together with CC, his sister, and the sister’s husband. They preferred just walking through the town as quickly as possible and that was it. The town was quite nice, especially the houses that were painted in some cool colors or in other ways had been made modern without losing the traditional Chinese style. 

Pariisin matkalla

Lähdimme joulukuussa Pariisiin kolmeksi yöksi. Olimme varanneet jo ajoissa lentoliput Norwegianilata, ja lento meni melko hyvin. Löysimme lentokenttäbussin, joka vei meidät metroasemalle, josta jatkoimme metrolla asunnollemme. Olin löytänyt pienen yksiön läheltä Eiffel tornia Airbnb sovelluksen kautta. Emännän sisko otti meidät vastaan ja asunto oli juuri meille sopiva, keittiöineen ja suihkuineen, ja kaikki nähtävyydet olivat kävelyetäisyydellä. Metrokin oli aivan oven ulkopuolella, joka teki matkustamisesta helppoa.

Heti ensimmäisenä päivänä lähdimme kävelemään kohti Eiffel tornia, joka oli parin korttelin päässä. Eiffel tornissa kävimme vain ensimmäisessä ja toisessa kerroksessa, sillä kolmas olisi jo ollut liikaa. Tämän lisäksi ehdimme nähdä Arc de Triomphe –riemukaarin sekä päivällä että illalla, Louvren museossa vietimme kolmisen tuntia ja kaikki suosituimmat taideteokset näimme hyvin, Notre-Dame kirkon ja Sacre Couer basilikan katoilla saimme ihastella maisemia.

Hyvin ehdimme nähdä kaikki nähtävyydet, joista olimme kiinnostuneita, kahdella kokonaisella päivällä ja kahdella puolikkaalla. Tämän lisäksi ehdimme shoppaila, etenkin Pariisin halvoissa apteekeissa, josta ostimme kassillisen Ranskalaisia ihonhoitotuotteita ja vitamiineja. Ruokailla ehdimme myös, ja vaikka oli vaikeata löytää tyypillinen Ranskalainen ravintola, pääsimme maistamaan mm. crepsejä, etanoja, juustoja. Heräsimme aina siinä viiden aikaan aamulla, ja seitsemältä, kun kahvilat avasivat ovensa, lähdimme liikkeelle. Otimme croisantin mukaan ja istahdimme kahville jossain keskustan pikku kahviloissa. Leivoksia tuli syötyä aivan tarpeeksi, ja herkullisia macaroon-leivoksia veimme kotiin asti.

                                                                                                                                          

We went to Paris for three nights in December. We had booked airplane tickets early from Norwegian and the flight went quite well. We found the airport bus, which took us to the nearest metro station, and from there we continued by metro to our apartment. We had booked an apartment near the Eiffel tower from Airbnb. The hostess sister was waiting for us at the apartment which was perfect for us. It had a small kitchen and bathroom, but its location was great. We could walk to all sights, and the metro was just outside the door, so traveling was convenient.

As soon as we had settled in we took a stroll around the neighborhood and found the Eiffel Tower just around a couple of blocks. It was sunny on our first day so we went to the first and second floor of the tower. During our trip we had plenty of time to visit all the sights that we wanted. We went to the Arc de Triomphe twice, to see it both during day and night. In the Louvre museum we spent three hours to see all the most important pieces. We could get a great view over the city from both Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur.

In addition to all the sightseeing we had time to do some shopping in the area. I especially liked the cheap pharmacies in the city from which we bought a bag full of French brand products and vitamins. Normally we got up at five in the morning but left the apartment at about seven when the cafes opened up. We had some croissants for breakfast and stopped at some small place to drink coffee. As we were up early, we could in most cases avoid queues and the days went on quite smoothly. Even though I was always looking for a typical French restaurant, we were out of luck, but we did taste some creep’s, snails and cheese, so at least some French food! 

Bar Rouge cocktaililla

Illallisen jälkeen Lost Heaven ravintolassa päätimme mennä Bar Rouge baariin cocktailille. Baari kuitenkin avaa ovensa vasta kymmeneltä, joten jouduimme etsimään toisen paikan tunnin odottelua varten. Eipä paljon paikkoja lähistöllä ollut, joten menimme Press ravintolaan. Yläkerrassa on baari, josta tilasimme drinkit, mutta ne olivat niin alkoholilla pilattuja, että oli jo vaikeata juoda. Bar Rougissa sentään saimme kunnon cocktailit, jotka maistuivat aivan loistavalta. Olisin halunnut kardemummalla ja vaahtokarkilla maustetun drinkin, mutta sillä se oli loppu tyydyin vadelma ja mustikka cocktailiin. Näkymät baarista ovat aina upeat, ja 15 euron sisäänpääsyhinta ja samanhintaiset cocktailit pitävät suurimman osan ihmisistä poissa. Paikan päällä on siis paljon firmoja ja keski-ikäisiä. Lähdimme kotia päin sen verran myöhään että emme voineet ottaa metroa. Toisin sanonen jouduimme turvautumaan taksiin, joka ei tiennyt minne oli matkalla tai sitten yritti huijata, sillä hän ajoi määränpään ohi. Onneksi kaupungissa olen asunut sen verran pitkään että tunnistan tiet ja tiedän mistä pitäisi ajaa, joten minua ei kyllä enää pysty huijaamaan.

                                                                                                                                                                    

After the dinner at Lost Heaven we wanted to go to Bar Rouge. The bar opened at ten, so we had about one hour to spend somewhere else before going there. We ended up in the Press, as there aren’t many other bars nearby that aren’t extremely expensive. The Press’s cocktails tasted too much of alcohol and I could barely drink it. Luckily we got better drinks at Bar Rouge. Their raspberry and blueberry cocktail was exactly as I like it, even though my first choice with cardamom and marshmallow was not available. Bar Rouge is quite expensive and that can be seen from the crowd, which consist of only middle aged people or some company groups. But the view is one of the best, so that’s why we chose this bar as the last part of our last day together in Shanghai. 

Lost Heaven

Perjantaina menimme saksalaisen pariskunnan kanssa syömässä Bundilla. Valitsin Lost Heaven ravintolan, joka on suosittu Yunnanilaisesta ruoastaan. Ruoka oli todella hyvää, mutta samalla kallista. Kaikki mitä söimme oli maukasta, mutta teelehdistä tehty salaatti ja uunipossu olivat erittäin herkullisia. Ravintolassa on kolme kerrosta, ja istuimme alimmassa kerroksessa, jossa oli nojatuolit. Toisessa kerroksessa oli aivan liikaa ihmisiä ja kova melu, joten olen iloinen, että saimme istua alhaalla. Ravintola on tunnettu hämärästä tunnelmasta, sillä siellä ei ole paljon valoja. Tunnelma oli siitä huolimatta hyvä.

                                                                                                                                                               

On Friday we went out for our last dinner with our German friends. We ate at Lost Heaven at the Bund. I had never been there before, but I had seen many good reviews of the place. It is quite expensive, but not as expensive as other restaurants nearby. The atmosphere in the restaurant is interesting as it is quite dark. However, the food was awesome. Everything we had we finished and the salad made from tea leaves and roasted pork were some of the best food I have tried. The restaurant served mostly Yunnan cousin and the decoration is according to this surrounding. We were seated on the first floor with sofas, as the upper floor was more formal, but noisy and filled with people. 

Suzhoun kaupunkimuuri

Viikon mittaisen loman aikana ehdimme käydä Suzhoun kaupungissa, joka sijaitsee noin puolen tunnin junamatkan päässä Shanghaista. Vietimme siellä yhden yön ja tarkoituksena oli aamulla jatkaa Moganshan-vuorelle, mutta siihen meillä ei ollutkaan aikaa. Automatka kaupunkiin oli kauhea. Matkan piti kestää noin tunti ja neljäkymmentäviisi minuuttia, mutta meillä kesti paljon yli 3 tuntia saapua kaupunkiin. Syy tähän oli ruuhkat Shanghaissa ja kolarit ym. jotka hidastivat ajoa motarilla.

Saavuttuamme kaupunkiin navigaattori ohjasi väärin ja jouduimme puolen tunnin ruuhkaan jälleen kerran. Päästyämme täältä pois saimme taas odottaa tukittuamme pikkutien, jolla halusimme tehdä U-käännöksen. Tässä ei vielä kaikki, vaan etsiessämme parkkipaikkaa, jouduimme pikkukujalle, jolla oli melkein mahdotonta tehdä U-käännös, sillä tie päätyi kävelytiehen. Vekslattua sinne tänne saimme viimein parkki paikan. Tapasimme CCn ja hänen siskon kaverin, ja yhdessä menimme syömään.

Ruokailun jälkeen menimme vanhalle kaupungin muurille. Kävelimme sitä pitkin hetken ennen kun siirryimme kaupunkiin. Olisin halunnut käydä jossain Suzhoun tunnetuissa puistoissa, mutta ketään muuta ei kiinnostanut siellä käynti. Onneksi olen jo kerran aikaisemmin kaupungissa käynyt noin pari vuotta sitten.

                                                                                                                                                                   

During my week long holiday, I had time to go to Suzhou, which is just some 30-minutes away by train. However, we took the car, and it took more than 3 hours due to heavy traffic and traffic accidents along the way that slowed down motorway. When we finally arrived in the city we drove to the wrong place and had to sit in a queue for a long time. Finding a parking spot in the crowded city wasn’t easy either. It took about an hour to navigate a tiny road since making U-turns were nearly impossible.

CCs and his sister’s friend also came to the city, so we ate together and spend the rest of the time together in Suzhou. We went to the old city wall, which wasn't too spectacular. We didn’t visit any of the gardens nearby, which I would have liked to see. But it doesn’t matter, as I have been in the city once before two years ago.
