Kakadu

Lauantaina meidän oli tarkoitus mennä eläintarhaan, mutta en jaksanut herätä seitsemän aikaan, joten eläintarha sai jäädä toiselle päivälle. Sen sijaan kävimme syömässä vähän eksoottisempia lihoja keskustan aussi ravintolassa. Itse tilasin suositun emu hampurilaisen, ja CC otti krokotiili hampurilaisen. Oma purilainen oli erinomainen, sillä mausteena käytetty punajuuri maistui loistavalta pihvin kanssa. Krokotiilipihvi maistui kalalle, eikä niin hyvältä, kun mielestäni krokotiili oli Australiassa maistunut. Otimme vielä jälkkärit perään, mutta ne eivät oikein olleetkaan niin herkullisia, kuin miltä ne menulla vaikutti. Suklaakakku oli huonoin mutakakku, jonka koskaan olen syönyt, ja syötyäni Pavlova annoksen M on the Bundilla, yhtä hyvää en usko muualta löytävänikään. Paikka oli kalliimpi kuin mihin olen tottunut, mutta kun ei pitkään aikaan ole käynyt yhdessä keskustassa syömässä, oli pakko kokeilla jotain uutta, mutta enpä usko jatkossa ostavani yli 15 euroa maksavia hampurilaisia. 

                                                                                                                                                                   

On Saturday we were supposed to go to the zoo, but I was too lazy to get up at seven in the morning, so we decided to take the trip another day instead. Instead we went to an Australian restaurant to have some more exotic meat for lunch. I had the Emu burger, which I had read about before, and CC chose the crocodile one. My emu burger was excellent with some beetroot, but the crocodile one was a disappointment and tasted like fish. Not at all as good as I remembered crocodile meat to taste like back in Australia. We also got some dessert that didn’t quite taste that awesome as I had imagined based on the description in the menu. The chocolate mud cake was probably the worst mud cake I have ever tried and the Pavlova wasn’t even near the goodness back in M on the Bund. Altogether our lunch cost a bit under 400rmb, but it was okey for tasting something more exotic once in a while.  

Kengurut ja sen sukulaiset

Crocodylus Parkissa oli krokotiilien ja muiden matelijoiden lisäksi myös muita eläimiä sekä Australiasta että muista maista. Olimme tulleet tänne katsoaksemme kenguruja, mutta matkan varrella löytyi kengurun tapainen pieni hyppivä otus. Wallaby niminen eläin oli todella utelias ja tuli ihan aitauksen viereen seisomaan. Seuraavassa aitauksessa oli kengurun bodattu sukulainen, eli wallaroo ja viimeiseksi löysimme kengurun. Kenguru oli kaikista laiskin ja yksin se nukkui samalla kun samassa häkissä ollut Emu kierteli aluetta. Kenguru ei tehnyt mitään eikä hyppinyt ympäriinsä, joten menimme katsomaan muita eläimiä. Tarhassa oli mm. paljon apinoita ja lintuja kuten strutseja. Kissaeläimet kuten esim. leijonat ja tiikerit nukkuivat sikeästi, kun taas Timorin ponit ja vesipuhvelit eivät helteestä välittäneet. Mennessämme takaisin kenguru aitauksen ohi pudotin vesi pullon vahingossa saadakseni paremman kuvan, tämä ääni sai kengurun liikkeelle ja saimme ainakin nähdä että se on elossa.

The Crocodylus Park had a lot of other animals as well as crocodiles. We had come here to see kangaroos but on the way we saw some smaller kangaroo like animals called wallabies. One of them was quite curious and came standing next to the fence. We also saw some wallaroos, with really large arm muscles. As we finally arrived to the kangaroo, it just laid on the ground doing nothing. All of its cousins had been interesting, but this one was just boring. We went on to see monkeys and birds. The park had animals from both Australia and other parts of the world such as tigers and lions. As we walked back and passed the kangaroo, I dropped my waterbottle by mistake when I tried to get a better picture. the sound made the kangaroo rice up, so at least we knew it was alive.

Kun ensimmäinen osa oli suoritettu meidän Australian to-do-listalta, eli krokotiilia ja kengurua oli maistettu, päätimme lähteä eläintarhaan näitä eläimiä näkemään. Menimme aamupäivällä kolmeen eri turisti-info- ja matkanjärjestyspisteeseen kysymään miten pääsemme Wildlife Centeriin. Meille kerrottiin, että sinne pääsee vain omalla kulkuneuvolla, eli periaatteessa meidän olisi pitänyt vuokrata auto. Olisihan tämäkin sujunut, mutta yhdessä paikkaa kerrottiin, että onhan toinenkin paikka jossa kenguruja voi nähdä, nimittäin Crocodylos Park. Sinne päästäkseen otimme bussin isoon kauppakeskukseen, jossa menimme nopealle tunnin kierrokselle, ennen kun otimme toisen bussin. Bussista jäimme pois poliisin päämajan ulkopuolella ja jonkin matkan kävelyn jälkeen helteisenä päivänä pääsimme perille puistoon.

Sisällä puistossa meille ilmoitettiin, että opastettu kierros alkaa tunnin päästä, joten kävimme itse kiertelemässä paikkoja. Ensimmäisessä lammessa oli Australian krokotiilejä. Puisen sillan päällä kävellen pystyi katsomaan alhaalla pienemmissä aitauksissa olevia isoja krokotiilejä. Monesti krokotiilit olivat veden alle piiloutuneet. Yhdessä aitauksessa oli myös albiino-krokotiili. Puistossa oli myös paljon makeanveden alligaattoreita. Niitä oli yhdessä altaassa varmasti lähemmäs viisikymmentä. Opastettukierros alkoi krokotiilien syöttämisestä. Opas pisti palan kananlihaa koukkuun kiinni, joka oli kiinni lammen yli menevään köyteen. Liha jäi siis roikkumaan lammen ylle noin parin metrin korkeuteen, ja sitten jäimme katsomaan miten krokotiili ponnistaa vedestä ja syö lihan. Opas kertoi että melko suuressa lammessa oli kaksi urosta ja loput kaksikymmentä oli naaraita, sillä urokset tappelevat reviiristä.

Jatkoimme matkaan puusillalle, jossa yleisö sai kokeilla syöttää krokotiilejä roikuttamalla kepin varassa olevaa lihan palaa krokotiilin aitauksen sisään. Siinä taas katseltiin kun krokotiilit yrittivät ponnistaa itsenä ylös saadakseen ilmasta lihan. Opas myös varoitti, ettei kaiteeseen kannattanut nojata, sillä krokotiilit olisivat myös siihen korkeuteen pysyneet nousta. Krokotiili syöttelyn jälkeen saimme pitää käsissä vauvakrokotiiliä. Meille sanottiin, että pitäkää nyt kunnolla siitä kiinni, ettei se putoa ja kuole. Kuristaen pikkuista saimme silittää sen pehmeää mahaa ja kovaa selkää. Lopuksi kävimme vielä puiston krokotiili-museossa. Siellä oli esillä kaiken maailman faktaa ja kuvia esim. miten kovaa krokotiilit juoksevat. Kiinnostava osio oli lehtiartikkeleista koottu osio jossa kerrottiin ihmisiä syönneistä krokotiileistä. Puisto oli periaatteessa krokotiilien tutkimuskeskus, ja maksamalla sisäänpääsymaksun sponsoroimme heidän tutkimustyötään.

After we had completed the first part of our to-do-list in Australia, which was eating crocodile and kangaroo, the next part was to see live ones. We went to three different tourist information and tour guide places to ask how we could get to the NT wildlife center, but only by an own vehicle could we make it there. Only one of the tour guides told us we could also try another zoo with both crocodiles and kangaroos called Crocodylus Park. To get there we had to take two buses, walk through the police HQ parking yard and cross an big road and finally we found the "nearby" park after about one hours adventures. As we arrived to the park we were told that an guided tour would be held after one hour, so we would have time to look around by ourselves first. 

There was first on display a large pound with crocodiles. Later on we were told that there were only two male and the rest were female crocodiles, as fights break out over territory if there are too many male. We continued to the breading captions, which was a wooden walkway over the crocodiles captions. It didn't feel too safe to walk there as I was afraid they would jump underneath us and break through the wood. The park had also a large group of freshwater alligators. One of the pools had probably around fifty alligators in it. As the guided tour started we walked over to the first pound with crocodiles. The guide fed some crocodiles by putting meet on a hook and wiring it out hanging from a rope in the air into the middle of the pound. Then we looked at as the crocodiles jumped to get the meat hanging a couple meters in the air. The guide was enthusiastic about his work and talked about lots of things. We continued over to the breading captions were visitors were allowed to feed the crocodiles with meat hanging on the end of a stick. 

After the feeding was over we were given the chance to hold a baby crocodile and pat its soft belly and hard back. We were advised to hold on tightly as it might fall and die. We also went to the crocodile museum inside the park. In the museum we could read a lot of interesting facts about crocodiles such as the speed they run and about crocodiles that have eaten humans. Crocodile body parts such as the heart was on the display. As the park is a research center we contributed to their work by paying the entrance fee.     

Australian herkkuja

Australiassa oli tarkoituksena sekä syödä että nähdä krokotiili ja kenguru. Aloitimme syömisellä, ja ihme kyllä melkein jokaisesta ruokalistasta löytyi jotain ruokia sisältäen näitä lihoja. Menimme sateelta suojaan urheilu-baarin katetulle terassille istumaan ja tilasimme tasteing platterin, jossa oli krokotiilia ja muita mereneläviä. Lisukkeeksi otimme sitten paistettua kengurua. Kenguru ei ollut mitään parasta, sillä liha oli mediumia, mutta toisaalla krokotiili oli ihan hyvää. Olisin krokotiilia halunnut vielä jälkeenpäinkin syödä lisään, mutta silloin emme enää löytäneet paikkaa joka olisi auki ennen yhtätoista, jossa olisi tarjolla krokotiilia. Ostimme myös lentokentältä krokotiili ja kenguru jerkyä, eli kuivattua lihaa, mikäli nälkä tulisi myöhemmin.

We had on our to-do-list in Australia to both see and eat crocodile and kangaroo, as they are the national animals of the country. A lot of places had dishes containing these ingredients, so as it started raining we took cover in one of the main-streets eateries. The sports-bar like place served crocodile on a tasting platter with some other creatures from the sea. We also took a side plate with kangaroo meat, but as it was only medium done it didn’t taste too great. The crocodile on the other hand was good, and I wanted to eat some more the next day. We also ended up buying some crocodile and kangaroo jerky on the airport, in case we want it later on. 

Luma Luma Holiday Apartments

Australiassa olimme pohjoisimmassa kaupungissa nimeltä Darwin ja yövyimme Luma Luma lomahuoneistoissa. Huoneessamme oli keittiö, joka oli kovassa käytössä, sillä ruoka oli ihan todella kallista Australiassa. Eli periaatteessa lounaaksi oli joka päivä spagettia eri kastikkeiden kanssa. Ihan hyvää kaikkien riisi ja nuudeli annosten jälkeen. Kolmen päivän aikana satoi yli puolet ajasta, joten hotellin uima-altaalla olimme vain parisen kertaa. Hotelli sijaitsi keskellä keskustaa, joten kävelimme joka päivä ympäri keskustaa.

In Australia we stayed in the most northern city named Darwin. Our Luma Luma hotel was a holiday apartment, so we had our own kitchen, which was great since the food was really expensive in Australia. Basically we ate for lunch spaghetti every single day. During our three day stay it rained most of the time, but since our hotel was located in the city center we could still walk around the nearby area every day.
