Taifuunin keskellä

Shanghaihin oli kesäksi luvattu kaksi Taifuunia. Ensimmäinen niistä iski Shanghaihin tänään. Super taifuuniksi kutsuttu Chan-Hom toi mukanaan kovia sateita ja taifuunin keskellä tulee 58 metriä sekunnissa. Meillä ei sentään kovin pahalta taida tuo taifuuni olla, vaikka asummekin vain seitsemän kilometriä mereltä ja korkeita rakennuksia ei ole edessä, niin ei täällä pahemmin tuullut, kun että ainoastaan ikkunat paukkuvat ja roskikset lentävät piahalla. Täälläpäin on tuullut vain 11 metriä sekunnissa. En itse aamupäivällä ulos mennyt, mutta illalla tuuli tyyntyi sen verran, että kävin kaupassa ostamassa maitoa. Sähköt olivat menneet kaupasta, mutta saimme silti ostaa. Metrot taitavat kulkea ihan normaalisti, mutta toisaalla ei tiedä onko mitkään paikat tänään auki. Ihmisiä varoitettiin mm. tveessä ulos menemisen vaaroista, mutta olen netissä nähnyt videoija, jossa näkee miten Shanghailaiset kaupungissa kaatuilevat sinne tänne kovien tuulien takia. Lentoja on peruttu ja monet nopeammat junat saavat odottaa että taifuuni laantuisi. Yöksi on luvattu vielä kovempia tuulia, että saapa nähdä jos taifuuni on vielä takaisin tulossa. Samoihin aikoihin etelä Kiinaan on osumassa toinenkin taifuuni, että vaikuttaa ihan taifuuni vuoden ajalta.

                                                                                                                                                                 

During my stay in Finland I read from my news feed that two typhoons will hit Shanghai during the summer. I wasn’t too impressed, but now the first one actually arrived. The super typhoon Chan-Hom which passed some Japanese islands and Taiwan on the way reached stage four which means that is pretty strong. Some say it is the strongest typhoon in Shanghai in the past 60 years. The wind of the center of the typhoon was estimated to be at 58 meters per second, but here we only had around 11 meters per second. The wind is strong and it is raining a lot, but people are still going outside even though there have been warnings to stay inside just to be on the safe side. Planes have been cancelled and trains have stopped. The metro however is still in action, but I’m unsure if any places are open today, so I rather stay at home for the day. We ventured out in the evening as the wind had stopped to go and get some milk from the shop nearby. The power was out in the shop but we were still able to buy. During the day we had only problem with the Wifi. The strong winds should continue during the night, but at the moment it isn't that catastrophic outside. 

Lentokentillä

Kova stressi tuli Helsingin lentokentällä, kun saavuin paikalle ennen lentoa. En ollut etukäteen pystynyt tekemään lähtöselvitystä, mutta jostain syystä pystyin sen silti tekemään vaivatta lentokentän koneella. Minulla oli kaksi laukkua, jotka menivät ruumaan, joista toisen maksoin voucherilla. Tämän jälkeen matka jatkui turvatarkastukseen, mutta siellä oli niin pitkät jonot, että oli pakko kävellä seuraavaan pisteeseen. Siellä ei onneksi ollut jonoa ollenkaan, ja pääsin melko nopeasti läpi. Kentän puolella oli aivan valtava ryysis. En ole aikaisemmin nähnyt näin paljon ihmisiä, ja suurimmaksi osaa matkailijat taisivat olla Aasiasta. Kävelin virtaa vasten mennessäni ensiksi tax free shoppiin ostamaan pari pulloa tuliaiseksi. Tämän jälkeen menin passintarkastuspisteeseen. Onneksi minulla oli biometrinen passi, joten en tarvinnut täälläkään jonottaa. Euroopan ulkopuolelle menevien lentojen terminaalissa oli valtavasti ihmisiä. Ennen kun menin portille, ehdin vielä ostaa aurinkovoiteen toisesta tax free shopista. Portilla oli jo melko paljon ihmisiä odottamassa, mutta minulla oli vielä vartti ennen boardausta, joten kävin vielä ostamassa ärrällä lehtiä. Boarding alkoi vartin myöhässä, mutta pääsin koneeseen nopeasti, sillä ykkösluokan lipuntarkastuksessa ei ollut ketään ja lipuntarkastaja päästi minut siihen jonoon.

Koneessa minulla oli loistava paikka, ja vieressä istui vain kiinalainen business mies. Kerrankin oli paljon tilaa sekä jaloille että tavaroille. Tällä kertaa tarjolla ei ollut pikkunaposteltavaa koneen takaosassa ja jopa juomavalikoimaa oli pienenetty, esim. limua ei saanut aamupalan kanssa. Leffaa ei tullut katsottua, vaan sen sijaan yritin nukkua.

Lento kesti vähän alle yhdeksän tuntia ja olimme perillä Shanghaissa seitsemän jälkeen. Lentokoneen laskeutettua, koneen eteen ei tullut keltaista autoa, joka opastaa parkkeerauspaikalle, joten kone seisoi kymmenisen minuuttia tätä odottamassa. Kentällä oli kuulemma aamuruuhka, mutta onneksi auto saapui paikalle ja pääsimme nopeasti ulos koneesta sen jälkeen. Kauhea ruuhka ilmestyi juuri ennen passintarkastuspisteitä, sillä kaikkien piti kulkea pienen karanteeni portin läpi. Onneksi suurin osa matkustajista oli kiinalaisia, ja he menivät omaan jonoonsa passintarkastuksessa. Vaikka jonossa oli varmaan parisataa ihmistä edessä, jonotus kesti vain parikymmentä minuuttia. Passintarkastaja ei mitään kysynyt. Matkalaukut olivat sillä aikaa jo tulleet, joten tunnissa olin jo kentältä valmis. Jouduin kumminkin vielä tunnin odottamaan kyytiä, sillä olin CCn kanssa kuvitellut, että kentältä voisi kestää jopa kaksi tuntia päästä ulos. Koneessa oli tullut huonosti nukuttua, joten kotiin päästyä ehdin nukkua kolmisen tuntia ennen kun lähdimme ulos syömään lounasta. Lounaan lähdimme vielä tunniksi puntille. Illalla pelasimme korttia ja menin ajoissa nukkumaan.  

                                                                                                                                                                 

It was a bit stressful at the airport. There were lots of people and queues everywhere. I didn’t go to the main security check but instead to one in the other end of the terminal. There were less people and I came quickly through without problems. Lots of Asian people were stopped in front of me because they had ipads in their bags that they hadn’t taken out from their bags. I had to walk all the way to the other end to buy some Finnish alcohol from the tax free, even though I could have bought the same stuff from the tax free shop on the international flight side. After going through the passport control I bought some sunscreen from the other tax free shop. Before going to the gate I still had some time to buy magazines. People were queuing from two different directions at the magazine shop so I was kind enough to let a women with a stroller pass me, even though I believe she had been queuing longer than most people.

The boarding started fifteen minutes later than originally announced. After everybody in first class had boarded, the person checking tickets in that line let me board the plane. I had a nice seat with lots of space to my legs and bags. I slept most of the flight and didn’t watch any movies.

The flight took almost nine hours and we landed after seven in the morning in Shanghai. However the plane wasn’t able to park before a yellow car would guide it to its parking space. We waited for the car for some fifteen minutes due to the morning rush hour. At the airport, the passport control took only some twenty minutes, as I am used for it to last up to one hour. The bags had already arrived after I had passed the passport control. I still had to wait outside for one hour before I was picked up from the airport by CC, his sister and a friend.

I had slept poorly during the flight, so I had to take a three hour nap at home. After this we had some lunch in a Chinese restaurant and I also managed to work out at the gym for one hour. In the evening we played some card with a friend and I tried to go early to bed.

Nyt on kesä Suomessa vietetty ja matka jatkuu takaisin Kiinaan. Onneksi sää oli mökillä ollessani loistava, joten eipä harmita nyt lähteä sateiseen Shanghaihin kun vähän auringonvaloa on nähnyt. Kaikki tavarat on pakattu ja joudun ottamaan ylimääräisen matkatavaran mukaan, sillä muuten en olisi saanut painavampia juttuja, kuten kirjoja ja leipomiseen tarkoitettuja jauhoja mukaan. Jostain syystä paikan varaaminen ei Finnairin sivuilla oikein toiminut, joten saapa nähä minne joudun istumaan.

                                                                                                                                                              

My last days in Finland for this summer have come to an end. Today I will take a flight back to Shanghai. I’m happy that the weather turned out so good during my time on our summer cottage, so hopefully I will survive the rainy weather in Shanghai that will be ahead of me.

Viisumi käytiin hakemassa ja muutenkin suurin piirtein kaikki hakemukset on saatu valmiiksi. Nyt olisi siis edessä hetken hengähdystauko Sipoon saaristossa.

                                                                                                                                                                  

Now I have the Chinese Visa and all other applications should be finished. I will head over to our summer cabin in Sipoo and spend some time there before coming back to the city and prepare for the trip back to China.

Meillä oli ikivanha sänky Shanghaissa, joka nyt onneksi lopulta hajosi. Ihan vahingossa se siis hajosi, vaikka olin jo pitkään yrittänyt houkutella ostamaan uutta sänkyä. Samana päivänä suuntasimme Ikeaan sänkyostoksille. Viikonloppuna Ikeaan ei oikein kannata mennä, mutta ei se menoa haitannut. Pitkän jonottelun jälkeen saimme syötyä lounaan ja sen jälkeen suuntasimme katsomaan esittelytiloja. Katselimme kahta sänkyä, jossa molemmissa oli säilytyslaatikot alla. Korkeampi sänky voitti, sillä siihen kuului vielä sängyn päätyyn pystytettävä hyllykkö. Matkalla otimme vielä kirjoituspöydän mukaan ja muuta sälää. Olin kirjoittanut alas väärän koodin, joten emme alussa olleet millään löytämässä mistä sängyn osat varasto-osassa oli. Info piste antoi meille ohjeet ja keräsimme sänkyä varten kolme isoa pahvilaatikkoa ja kaksi osaa runkoa varten. Vaikka olimme autolla, isot pahvilaatikot, jotka olivat noin kahden metrin pituisia, ei autoon mahtunut. Otimme siis kotiinkuljetuksen, joka maksoi vähän alle viisitoista euroa.

Sänky osien oli tarkoitus tulla seuraavana päivänä yhden ja viiden välillä, mutta mitään ei kuulunut. Lopulta jouduimme soittamaan, ja kysellä kuljetuksen perään. Vasta seitsemän aikaan paketit viimeinkin saapuivat, vaikka olimme olleet kotona odottamassa koko päivän. Ikean miehet toivat paljon painavat laatikot viidenteen kerrokseen kantamalla paketit selällään. Huomaa kyllä, että he tekevät tätä joka päivä, sillä minä en millään olisi saanut noin hankalaa pakettia rappusia ylös. Voi lisästä, että kuljettajat eivät olleet suurikokoisia, vaan pieniä kiinalaismiehiä.

Tästä alkoi siis kokoaminen. Aloitin pöydästä, eli helpoin, ja sen jälkeen aloitin päätyhylyllä. Meillä oli vaikeuksia saada yksi levy oikealle kohdalle. Jäimme jumiin, mutta hetken kuluttua hyllykkö oli valmis. Sitten vain sänkyä rakentamaan. Helpommin sanottu kuin tehty. Ohjeiden mukaanhan se helposti menee, mutta minulla ei ollut sähköporakonetta, joten jokaisen ruuvin vääntäminen käsin kesti aikansa. Sanoisinko, että runko kesti sen kolmisen tuntia tehdä, ja laatikot kokosin seuraavaan aamuna. Valmis sänky oli edellistä pidempi, joten sen ohi käveleminen on vähän haastavaa. Toisaalla sänky on hyvä ja laatikot alla todella tilavia, joten olen tyytyväinen ostokseemme.

                                                                                                                                                                     

Our century old bed finally gave up and broke. I had been trying to convince the family to buy a new bed from the beginning but now I finally had a reason to really get a new one. The same day we headed over to the nearest Ikea. The place was packed with people, but we still ate some lunch before going to the showroom to look at beds. From the showroom we chose two beds that we liked. Both had four storages under the bed, but we chose the higher one that also had a back board/book storage space. We didn’t find the bed from the warehouse section at first, but in the end we had all the right packages. Even though we came to Ikea by car, there was no chance of us taking home with us a two meter long package.

We left the large packages at the home delivery desk and paid 90rmb for them to deliver to our home. We were told the delivery was being made the next day between one and five. Even though we waited at home for most of the day, no delivery showed up. At five we gave Ikea a call and at about seven they finally turned up. The delivery men took the heavy packages all the way up to the fifth floor by carrying the packages on their backs.

I started by putting the easiest furniture together, namely a table we also bought. After this I made the headboard that we had some problems with. Some of the boards didn’t match correctly, but after a while I didn’t care anymore. The last one was the bed and by hand it took some three hours to put it together. The next morning I made the storage boxes and after that I had got everything finished. The new bed is a bit longer than the previous one and going past it is a bit hard. But no worries, since now we can reorganize the rest of the room as well. 

Gourmet Week & Blue Frog

Shanghaissa vietettiin kuukauden alussa Gourmet Week -ruokaviikkoa. Luulin jo että kyseessä oli vain ravintola viikot, mutta mukana oli siis ainoastaan vähän kalliimmat ja hienommat ravintolat keskustassa. Netin kautta piti varata pöytä, sillä mikäli ilman varausta menee, ei saa menusta halvempaa hintaa. Syy siis siihen, että oli pakko mennä edes yhteen ravintolaan tällä viikolla oli hinnat. Hinnat lounaasta tai illallisesta oli todella edulliset verrattuna normaaleihin hintoighin. Me kävimme Blue Frog –jenkkiravintolassa. Lounaaseen kuului salaatti tai keitto, juoma ja hampurilainen. Hampurilaiset jo maksoivat melkeinpä yksinään viisitoista euroa, mutta ennakkoon varatessa maksoin yhden hengen lounas setistä vähän yli kympin. Tarkoituksena oli vielä käydä MoCa –ravintolassa, mutta työhaastattelun takia en sinne ennättänyt mennä. Gourmet viikolla oli mukana kolmen eri luokan ravintoloita, ja lounaan ja illallisten hinnat olivat sen mukaan jaettu kolmeen hintaluokkaan. Blue Frog kuului siihen halvimpaan kategoriaan, mutta olisi ollut myös kiva kokeilla esim. Jade on the 36th, nyt kun halvemmalla olisi ollut lounas tarjolla.

                                                                                                                                                                  

In the beginning of June, Shanghai celebrated Gourmet Week. I thought it was just a restaurant week, but as the name says, only expensive and popular restaurants were part of this week. There was a list of about hundred restaurants that were divided into three categories depending on their price. I had to book in advance on their net page since otherwise you can’t get the cheaper price at the restaurant. I wanted to try at least one place, so we went to the Blue Frog, an American bar and restaurant. We got a soup and salad, two drinks and two gigantic hamburgers for 154rmb. Just one hamburger on the menu can cost over 80rmb. I would also have wanted to go to Moca, but my job interview was at the same time as I had the reservation to the restaurant, so in the end I had to skip it. The gourmet week had some great restaurants on their lists that I will try some other time. 

Pyhät juhlittu

Kone joutui joksikin aikaa huoltoon, joten bloggailusta olen saanut pidettyä jälleen vähän pidemmän tauon. Suomessa on aikaa kulunut viisumin hoitamisessa, ja samalla myös kaiken maailman muita paperihommia koulun ja työharjoittelupaikan kanssa. Viisumihakemus sentään meni läpi ensimmäisellä kerralla, me kun olemme tottuneet siihen, että viisumi papereista aina puuttuu jokin osa. Lento takaisin Shanghaihin on jo ostettu, joten sain vähän lisäpäiviä Suomessa, verrattuna aikaisempaan suunnitelmaan, jonka mukaan olisin jo seuraavalla viikolla palannut kiinaan.

Suomessa on tullut koettu nyt kaikki pyhät jotka jäivät välistä. Aamupalaksi olen syönyt mämmiä, ja äiti osti pussillisen minion munia. Juhannuskin jäi pääsisäisen lisäksi juhlimatta, joten silliä ja lohta on kyllä monesti ollut ruokana. Jopa synttärikakkukin piti ottaa hetki alkuun, kun sekin jäi Shanghaissa saamatta.

Nyt kun taas koneella ollaan, voisin julkaista postauksia Shanghain tapahtumista, jotka jäivät kiireen vuoksi julkaisematta kuun alussa.

                                                                                                                                                                    

My computer had to be repaired, and therefore I had some time off the blog. During my time in Finland, I have been busy preparing visa, school and internship papers. Luckily my visa application was accepted on the first try. We are used to having to go the embassy more than a few times, as there are papers always missing. I have also booked my flight back to Shanghai a couple of days later than planned, so I will have more time to spend at our summer house.

Back at home, I have celebrated those holidays that I couldn't attend when I wasn’t in Finland. I started by eating a traditional Eastern dish that I have in the pictures. We have also eaten lots of fish, since we usually have lots of fish dishes during midsummer. Midsummer was celebrated just some days before I came to Finland. As a bonus we ate my birthday cake as I never got one in Shanghai.

As soon as I have time I will add some posts that I was supposed to publish in the beginning of the month, but since I was so busy during the last two weeks in Shanghai, I didn’t have time to finish any posts. 

Finnairilla kotiin

Where is everybody?

The plane was on time but delayed when the heavy rains started 

Lensin maanantaina Shanghaista Finnairin suoralla lennolla kotiin. CCn tuttava kyyditti minut kentälle, ja hänen tulessaan hakemaan meitä puolituntia aikaisemmin sovitusta ajasta, olin hieman turhan aikaisin kentällä. Ei se sinänsä haitannut, sillä ei tarvinnut jonottaa baggae drop pisteelle. Passintarkastukseen jonotin noin kymmenen minuuttia ja turvatarkastus meni nopeasti. Kentällä oli melko hiljaista, ei paljon ihmisiä. Tämä ehkä johtuu siitä, että kovien sateiden takia monet lennot on peruttu ja siirretty. Olin neljäs henkilö, joka pääsi koneeseen, sillä kukaan ei ollut jonottamassa boardingin alkaessa. Kone oli silti loppujen lopuksi aivan täynnä. Kovan sateen takia ja varmasti myös huonon näkyvyyden takia, kone myöhästyi viisikymmentä minuuttia. Monet olivat hämmillään, mikäli kuulutuksessa oli sanuttu viisikymmentä vai viisitoista minuuttia. Olin valinnut oman paikkani, mutta käytävän toisella puolella olisi ollut vielä parempi paikka, leveällä jalkatilalla. Vieressäni istui kiinalainen liikemies, joka koko yhdeksäntuntisen lennon aikana nousi vain kerran ylös. Toisin sanoen lento meni hyvin katsoessani leffoja koko lennon ajan ja ahmiessani kaiken ruoan, jota lennolla tarjottiin. Kaksoisolentoni näyttelijä Krista Kosonen oli kuulemma samalla lennolla, mutta häneen en törmännyt.

                                                                                                                                                             

On Monday I flew from Shanghai to Helsinki with Finnair. CCs friend gave me a ride to the airport and since he had come and picked us up thirty minutes too early, I had too much time to spend on the airport. On the other hand it wasn’t too bad to be early, since there was no queue to the baggage drop. Only the passport check had a long queue, but I got through it in some ten minutes or so. The security check was quick as well. After this I walked around the airport and I couldn’t believe how little people there were. Maybe all flights were moved or cancelled because of the heavy rains? I was the fourth person going into the plane as nobody was queuing when the boarding started. The plane ended up being full, even though I had hoped for there to be less people. The start was delayed by 50 minutes due to the rains and poor visibility. The flight time was nine hours and thirty minutes and I spent that time watching movies and eating everything that was served on the flight. In other words the flight went well.

Lähialueella avattiin uusi, hienompi kiinalainen ravintola. Saksalaisen ystävän kanssa tuli käytyä ensimmäisen kerran, ja paikka oli melko mahtava. Hinnat eivät olleet korkeat, sillä tilasimme juomien lisäksi viisi annosta, ja hinta oli vähän yli kympin. Menu on meille ulkomaalaisille loistava, sillä kaikista annoksista löytyy kuvat, ja itse ruksaa paperille, mitkä haluaa tilata. Paikka on hyvin suosittu, mutta ei silti huomaa ihmismäärää, koska ravintola on jaettu huoneisiin, jossa on yhdestä kymmeneen pöytää.

                                                                                                                                                                    

A new restaurant opened up not far from our home. It is a Chinese restaurant that looks really modern and fancy, but the prices are cheap compared to other places. I tried the restaurant for the first time with my German friend and we ordered drinks and five dishes for just 80rmb. The menu in this place is great for people who can’t read Chinese. All the dishes have pictures and you order by putting a x in the box under the dishes you want. The place is popular and I have visited it with CC as well. The great thing about it is that the restaurant has been divided into smaller rooms with one to ten tables in every room. This way you don’t have to listen to other customers screaming, I mean talking really loud with each other.

Meidän lähin ostari ei ole samanlainen kuin mitä Suomesta löytyy. Täällä ei esim. ole baaria eikä edes ruokakauppaa. Sen sijaan ostarissa on meidän kuntosali, jonne kävelen melkein päivittäin, ja paljon ravintoloita, kauppoja, leipomoita ja mehubaareja. Ostarista löytyy myös elokuvateatteri. Sanoisin että yksi neljäsosa, jos ei jopa puolet, liiketiloista on suljettu. Luulisin syyn tähän olevan se, että ostari on hieman syrjässä ja monet kaupat eivät saaneet asiakkaita. Parin vuoden päästä paikka varmasti on paremmassa kunnossa, sillä ympärillä rakennetaan kovaan vauhtiin uusia rakennuksia. Ostari sijaitsee ihan metropysäkin lähettyvillä, joten ei se kovin huonossa paikassa ole. Vieressä on myös kaksi hotellia, josta toinen on neljän tähden Qube hotelli. Länsimaalaisia ei muuten kotikulmillani kauheasti näy, mutta ostarissa sen sijaan heitä voi bongata. Syy tähän on siis hotelli, josta on lyhyt matka lentokentälle. Ostarissa on paljon ravintoloita, mutta en voi sanoa, että olisin kokeillut montaa paikkaa.

                                                                                                                                                                    

Our nearest mall isn’t in any way like the ones found in Finland. To start off there is no bar or supermarket in this mall, but instead there is lots of restaurants, shops, bakers, juice bars, a cinema and the gym I go to almost every day. I think that one quarter or maybe even half of the shop and restaurant spaces are unoccupied. Most have probably closed due to lack of customers or then they haven't opened up yet. Maybe in the near future the mall will get more popular when the construction works nearby is completed. The mall is next to a metro station, so the location isn’t that bad. There is also a four star hotel next to the mall that attracts some western tourists since otherwise it is hard to find western people in this part of Shanghai. Even though the mall is filled with all kinds of restaurants, I have only tried a few.
