520 -päivä

CC made this out of three bills; 50,20 and 10 yuan bills

Yesterday China celebrated the 520 –day. The number comes from the date 20th of May which in China is written as 5.20. When the numbers are pronounced it is wu er ling, which Chinese people thinks sounds the same as wo ai ni, which means I love you. Therefore that day is similar to maybe Valentine’s day, even though they celebrate that day as well in February.

On the Top Party

Lauantaina lähdimme vielä illalla ulos juhlimaan. Tällä kertaa kohteena oli vähän jännempi juhlapaikka, sillä baari jonne olimme menossa, sijaitsi Shanghai World Finance Centerin Park Hyatt hotelissa. Aivan oikein. Vessat olivat automatisoituja, joten avatessani oven, vessa itse nosti kannen ylös. Lisäksi se pesi ja kuivasi tarvittaessa. Eli eipäs mikään huippu paikka kun vessa on illan kohokohta!

On Saturday we also went out to party in the evening. Our destination was the SWFC skyscrapers Park Hyatt Hotel club that was located on the 92nd floor. We got in for free as I had RSVP to the organizers but otherwise the entrance cost 100rmb. This was called the highest party in the world, but I wasn’t that impressed. The place wasn’t big at all and pretty full when we arrived some thirty minutes after opening. The drinks were expensive and the one I got tasted horrible. The view was nonexistent and the DJ played tracks that weren’t danceable. The highlight of the night has to be the toilet. I have seen a pretty spectacular golden toilet in the Cirque de Soil bar, but this toilet was fully automatic and opened up when I entered the room. It also had some washing and drying functions. I had people queuing outside so no time to try it for too long.

M on the Bund Afternoon Tea

The famous Pavlova dessert
The teacups are beautiful but for me too expensive to buy for myself
The modern Pudong meets historical Puxi
The outside terrace was pretty full
A picture of inside the restaurant
I love the decoration of the restaurant
The view from the terrace
M on the Bund is located at the Bund, just like the name indicates
M on the Bund –ravintolassa tuli käytyä viimeksi noin vuosi sitten.

It has been almost a year since I last time went to M on the Bund. I have longed after the famous Pavlova dessert and finally got it. As of now this might be my favorite dessert. Instead of going to the brunch, I saved some 300rmb and went to the Afternoon tea. The tea is served during the weekends from three to maybe five. We had the afternoon tea set with some Pu’er tea and some Shanghai dream fruit and flower tea. The tea set came with some sweet and savory treats. There were three breads with different fillings and two pieces of pie. Of course we shared everything so there wasn’t much to eat, just a mouthful of everything. The best part was two scones that could be filled with whipped cream, raspberry jam or some sort of passion fruit compote. The last two desserts on top weren’t that interesting. The view from the terrace is great and we got some nice shots of the skyscrapers on the opposite side. Luckily the weather outside was warm and sunny so the afternoon tea was a pleasant experience.

Teetetyt vaatteet

Both bottoms were perfect on the first time, so no need for alterations
My t-shirts were made out of the fabric I had bought in another shop with a Zara t-shirt as the model
I'm pretty happy with my shorts that look almost the same as the ones that I had in mind
This was the jeans shop that I made my jeans in
Lots of jeans fabric colors to choose from
Outside the South Bund Fabric market people sell jewelry
Most sellers are from Tibet
People sell fabric out in the streets nearby the tailor market

Last Saturday, we went back to the fabric markets to pick up our tailor made clothes. All of them were finished and only one pair of pants needed to be altered. The alteration was quick, since we received the pants in the post two days later. We started off by going to the South Bund tailor market. I went first to the shop that made my t-shirts, but after not finding them in the shop, the seller asked me to return in ten minutes. I headed to the third floor were my jeans were. There was another person in the shop arguing over some jeans that should have been ready today, but the tailor hadn’t finished them. After the customer left empty handed, I also had to wait for the seller to run and fetch my jeans from an unknown location. I was able to try the new jeans on in a small dressing room. The jeans were great copies of my original ones, but the fabric wasn’t as super soft. I should also change the button and add some metal pieces to make them even better. When I went back down stairs, the seller had managed to find my t-shirts. The black one was pretty good, but the beige one was maybe 2cm shorter than I had asked for. The seam isn’t the straightest one, but both shirts are wearable and super soft as I had bought the fabric from another store.

Next we headed over to the Shi Liu Pu market where we had two linen pants. My shorts were great, even though the belt I had asked for was missing. No big deal, since they had provided my shorts with some strings to tighten them up if needed. On the other hand the pants CC wanted had a problem. Instead of making the front of the pants normal with a button and a zipper, the zipper had been used, but not all the way up and an elastic band waist made opening up the pants completely impossible. To finish of the tailor had sewn the button on top of the elastic waist line. After some five minutes of arguing, with the seller saying that this is what you ordered and us saying why would we provide you with a button if you don’t use it. In the end we won and the changes were made without any extra payments. From the same market I bought three different colored suede fabrics to make some jackets in the future. Over all I’m happy with all of my tailor made items and this was kind of a soft start to see what they make and how much it costs.

Kiinalainen pankkikortti

Today I finally managed to go and get myself a Chinese bank card. It would have been useful for let’s say all the time I have been in China, but I never went and did it. I assume getting a card in China is easy, you just need a passport, but I live in an area where nobody speaks English, so it got a bit complicated. We went to the nearest bank at about half past three, as I assumed they would close at five. There were 46 people ahead of us in line and the medium sized bank was pretty crowded. We got a queuing ticket and a woman assisted us and gave us a form to fill out. Not long after this our number came up, but the clerk couldn’t help us, and told us to get a new ticket for queuing for two other counters on the side. For these desks there was only one person ahead, so no need to queue for a long time.

The bank actually closed it main doors at four o’clock, which meant that everybody who was inside were served. I think this was a great tactic, since it would be horrible to queue in line for hours and then they tell you they have already closed and come back tomorrow or something like that. After it was our turn, the first problem arose when the woman behind the desk tried to figure out if my surname or first name comes first. They even had problems with the length of my name as well as knowing which is which. Not a big surprise, but weird that they haven’t had a single western customer before me. The second problem was knowing where my passport was issued as it is written in Finnish and Swedish with just police and the place of issue. After getting all the information correct I got a text message with a code to fill in in a machine in front of me. After this I could come up with my own password, consisting of six numbers. I signed my name on maybe ten papers. I gave the woman a 100 bill and she put 85rmb into my account and took 15 as some sort of charge. She advised me to believe if somebody called me and told me they were from the bank, in an attempt to scam me, but I assured her that I never understand when people call me, so no worries! I got my card and we were led out from a side door as the main one was locked. Getting a card took maybe 45 – 60 minutes, but a lot quicker than waiting for 46 people in front of you.

All in a sudden a bunch of shops selling western food have opened up all around the city. I wonder if there really is a demand for these products, as they mostly sell cookies and drinks. I have visited some shops but they stock things that I’m not that familiar with. In the city we walked past another shop and since CC wanted to take a rest I had time to take a closer look at all the products. I found a New Zeeland ice tea that cost only 3rmb. The price was ridiculously low to be an import product and the taste wasn’t bad either. Next time I want to try the blueberry one. I also found two cookies that I wanted to try and I actually found some great cookies. One was a Belgian waffle cookie and the other one Swiss merengue-chocolate cookie. These also cost some 9-12rmb per packet, in other words almost the same as what Chinese cookies cost.

Update: I went to a nearby western store to get something to drink and bought a bag full of other cheap food items. For example I bought olive oil that costs 70rmb in Carrefour for some 18 rmb here. The seller was quite chatty and was so proud of his prices that he told us he gets the stuff cheap by buying it from the Free Trade Zone. The area has been running for a couple of years now and seems like it is working if you can buy and still sell for half the price of even less than supermarkets do. He showed us an app which compares prices for eg. beer and we could see that other places charge a lot more than this small store.

Triangl bikinit

Both bikinis are same model Milly
This color is called the Arizona Sunset
Miami Mint

I was browsing Taobao when I came across Triangl bikinis. I found them really interesting looking due to the colors and black edges that make them look cartoonish. Taobao had some really cheap ones costing just some 30 rmb and some more expensive ones costing from 300rmb upwards. I was unsure from where to buy, as I assume that the inexpensive ones aren’t using neoprene material and the model and fit might be bad. On the other hand the expensive ones might also not be the real ones. Buying bikinis without knowing if they are properly made and what size you should have is a bit complicated. Luckily I didn’t buy from Taobao, as I found a shop at the Science and Technology market selling the bikinis. The seller had lots of colors and sizes and I was somewhat able to try the top on and see if it even looked good or not. I had to haggle for a while and ended up buying two pieces as the price for two was 200rmb together, even though she started off from like 180rmb for one.

Laukkuostoksilla

Inside a bag store in Science and Technology market
Pretty bold move to have Channels on display like this
My new gym bag

Kävin viime perjantaina Science and Technology markkinoilla katsomassa mitä siellä on tarjolla.

Last Friday I went to the Science and Technology market to see what they have on sale now. I was supposed to buy a Mulberry bag, but I forgot how much I paid for it a year ago, so I didn’t come to an agreement on the price with the seller. I was also looking for a Celine bag, but after making one sales person run around and try to find it for me, I decided not to buy it, as it wasn’t as I had expected it to be like. I went to a lot of bag stores but ended up buying only a Longchamp bag in a bigger size than a similar one that I have bought earlier from the market. I have a smaller pink one, but the bigger brown one is great as a gym bag. The long and short handles make the bag easy to carry around. I bought the bag for 120rmb, which was just 20rmb more expensive than the smaller one I bought last year.

No ensi kerralla sitten sitä ostamaan.

I have spent the last few days looking up on google what to make in the tailor markets, what to avoid and how much it costs. Saturday was spent going from one tailor market to another one and ordering five pieces of clothing. We started off by going to the less known Shi Liu Pu Cloth Market that is nearby Yuyuan Garden. The market wasn’t crowded, which suited me just fine. The basement floor had lots of fabric and I regret not buying a great suede fabric that cost only 40rmb per meter. The basement also had some great leather, mostly faux leather on sale, that I should take closer look at next time.

The upper floors had tailors but also fabrics could be found and I bought some cotton for two t-shirts.
We were looking for a tailor that made clothes out of linen. I had made a sketch of a pair of shorts that I wanted that would help the tailor understand what I wanted, but CC wanted to order pants without any picture. The first shops would have done the shorts and the pants for 450rmb, even though you can haggle here, I didn’t feel satisfied with the price, so we moved on. We found another place that took our order for 300rmb. We chose the fabric, a black thin linen fabric for both bottoms. The shopkeeper took our measurements and I provided her with the buttons and zippers I had bought earlier that day from the material market. I paid 200rmb first and 100rmb will be paid next time. The clothes we ordered should be finished next week and I will rather go there and try them on and see if they fit, than just ask them to send them in the post.

After this we walked for a while until we reached South Bund Fabric Market. This market had a lot of people, especially western tourists. I have been to this market once before, but that time I didn’t order anything as there were too much to choose from. Three floors provide a tailor for any material. This time I had with me the t-shirt and jeans that I wanted to copy, so I just needed to find a jersey and jeans tailor to make my orders.  Finding a stall that could make good seems on stretch material was hard to find and those that I eventually did find told me that copying my not-so-expensive and not-so-hard-to-make shirt would cost 180rmb. Unbelievable. Finally I found a place that would copy the t-shirt and make two shirts out of the material I provided for 100rmb. A lot more expensive than I had imagined, but hopefully the result is good.

I also found a tailor specialized in jeans, that didn’t have the super soft jeans material that I was looking for, but pretty close. The seller was nice and after choosing a black jeans fabric she took my measurements. I provided her with my old jeans that the tailor would copy. She didn’t start off with some really expensive start price, but instead gave me direct the price of 160rmb, that I accepted. Also this one would take a week before I could come and pick it up. I hope the result is great, because I would really like to continue doing business with this seller. Next weekend I can go and pickup my items and I hope they are even somewhat near the original one.

Nuudelilounas vanhassa kaupungissa

Today’s lunch was eaten outside the walls of Yuyuan Garden. We were on our way from the clothing material market to the tailor market when hunger hit and we had to get food fast. We ordered two noodle dishes and ate them on the street overlooking the masses of people that passed us on the street.
