How about not looking at the view points when being 474 m above the ground
I bought some souvenirs for myself from the 94th floor
I got a free macaroon, but I also bought three more as well as a cupcake
Walking along the skywalk to IFC Mall for lunch

Sight three: The Bund Sightseeing Tunnel
Syntymäpäiväni kunniaksi vietin oikean kunnon turisti-päivät menemällä kolmeen turistikohteeseen, jossa en ole aikaisemmin käynyt, ja samalla tuli myös kokeiltua kolme uutta ruoka nautintoa. Kirjoitan päivästäni ensiksi lyhyesti mitä tuli koettua, nähtyä ja maistettua, jonka jälkeen teen vielä lisään postauksia, jossa tulee olemaan vähän lisään tietoa kohteista.

Lähdin aamulla yhdentoista aikaan matkaan ja ensimmäinen kohde oli Shanghai World Financial Center. Olen aikaisemmin käynyt viereisessä pilvenpiirtäjässä, eli Jin Mao Towerissa syömässä, mutta en ole aikaisemmin käynyt näköala-tasanteilla. Sisäänpääsy on syntymäpäivänä ilmainen, joten siinä lienee syy miksi juuri tänään tuli mentyä sinne.

I celebrated my 22nd birthday by going to three tourist attractions that I haven’t visited before. I will first write about my day as a whole and after that post some more about some of the highlights of the day. I started off by going to the first attraction, which was the Shanghai World Financial Center located in Lujiazui. From the four skyscrapers in the area, I have only been to Jin Mao Tower, and that was also just for dinner, not for looking at the sights. Since I had my birthday, the entrance to the three highest floors was free, otherwise it costs 180rmb. The 97th floor wasn’t too bad and I was relieved it didn’t feel is high as it actually was. When I continued up to the 100th floor, my hands started sweating and I leaned against the wall to take pictures. There were quite a lot of people, but I still managed to find free spots to take pictures from. However, I tried to not go too near the windows, as they had placed smaller windows in the floor as well. Avoiding the floor windows was a hard task but I managed it. I went down to the 94th floor where I bought some cards and a key-ring for myself as a souvenir.

The bottom floors of the building are filled with shops, cafes and restaurants, to which I had received some coupons to when entering the observatory. With one of the coupons I received a free macaroon from Miss Ma. I also bought some other macaroons and a cupcake before I continued onwards. I walked over to IFC Mall where I ate lunch at Paradise Dynasty. I had some delicious rainbow dumplings that I had read about in another blog. I did one more stop in the mall and bought some cinnamon rolls from Baker and Spice.

I went to the Shanghai Ferry Station and took the ferry over to the Puxi side of the river. The crossing is pretty fast and convenient, but I haven’t done it before. I ended up on the Bund promenade, where I found myself an empty spot. I was just about to eat my cinnamon roll when I noticed two Chinese getting closer and closer. They sat right beside me even though there was plenty of space to go further away. One of them took some pictures of himself with a selfie-stick and now and then tried to take pictures of me without me “noticing”. After a while he got the courage to ask if I could join him in a picture. I said it is okay and with a shaking hand he snapped some pictures of the two of us. We had a nice chat in Chinese and as we had become so good “friends” during this chat, he wanted some more pictures. The two of them moved on and I was left with my cinnamon roll, but not for a long time, since a group of middle aged Chinese women surrounded me and wanted one by one sit by me and have pictures taken. I moved on after a while even though I suspect that the women still would have liked to continue taking pictures.

I walked over to the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, which was the third tourist attraction I hadn’t tried before. It is known to be the tackiest thing ever with some flashing lights in a tunnel. That was true, and I would not recommend anybody to pay 50rmb for that ride, but at least now I know what they were talking about. The ride ended on the other side of the river, back in Lujiazui, so I took the metro back home. We had dinner at home after which we continued out to a KTV where we sang for two hours before going back home.

This park is located about fifteen minutes from our home and we decided to go there during the weekend. It was a warm and sunny day and lots of people spent their free time in the park by dancing, singing, playing card games or badminton, renting a boat or just walking around. The park is nice with lots of seats and the style varies a lot. Maybe someday, if I ever will like it, I could imagine go running in the park, as going for a run out on the streets might be a bit of a hazard with all the quite mopeds that can run you over.

Dog House hodareita

I get some news about what’s up in shanghai, and one of the new places they recommended was Dog House. Dog House doesn’t sell regular hot dogs, even though that is pretty hard to find in Shanghai, but instead they offer 13 weird combinations including Mexican, Japanese, Russian and Korean flavors.  It wasn’t easy to find, as it is located beside the metro in Soho Fuxing Plaza, a mall that hasn’t officially opened. The place only has seats for some six people, but luckily there wasn’t too many people when I arrived. As I was checking the menu, one of the workers came and guided me through and told me that the Philly hot dog is their best seller. Of course I ordered that one, as well as a portion of waffle fries that were served in a dogs bowl. The Philly consisted of beef, cheese sauce, mushrooms, jalapenos and crispy onion. As I was eating one of the workers, I assume it was the manager, asked how the hotdog was and we had some small talk about how the business was going. Seems like they really found a great market gap to fill in. I also bought a Pizza hot dog with some pepperoni and other pizza spices that I ate back home. Some of the hot dogs that I might try in the future include the Peking one with Peking duck and the tropical one with fruit.

Oksia sahaamassa

A man standing on a branch cutting off other branches by hand in the wind and rain

Toisin sanoen he eivät olisi voineet huonompaa päivää valita, sillä oksien leikkaajaa seisoo ihan oksien varassa, eikä ole kiinnitettynä mihinkään.

I heard some loud motor chain sounds outside our window and when I looked outside there were some men cutting off branches of the trees on pavement. The person doing the work was just standing on a branch without any harness or anything else protecting him in case he would fall. What made this even more dangerous was the fast that the weather wasn’t the most ideal with some showers and an extreamly hard wind.

Kellarista luksusta

Walking down the Shaanxi Road, I came across a shop that from the outside looked like a second hand store. When I ventured inside I found out that the store in fact sold new, not used, brand clothes. This store had some better brand names, than the one near my home, but the prices where ten times more expensive. For example a BCBG Max Azria dress can cost some 200rmb at the store nearby, but here they cost about 800rmb. On the other hand the brands I saw here included Saint Laurent, Louise Vuitton, Tory Burch and so on, and most were prices above 800rmb. I found some great pieces such as an Alexander McQueen dress, but the way they have put the clothes on display is just awful. Everything looks so old and dirty, even though they are pretty new and clean. The floor boards were broken and the overall it felt like stepping into some ones basement. Who will seriously come here to buy some lux clothing? Even the seller was a middle aged man smoking heavily making the shop even more weirder.

Nordic Thoughts on Fashion

During my time here I haven’t been following up on what the Finnish Business Councils group in Shanghai called Young Professionals has been up to, until recently. I found on their website that there would be an event called Nordic Thoughts on Fashion, with three speakers from the Nordic countries, so I signed up for it. The event was held in Kartel, a wine bar in the city center. When I arrived at the bar, located on the fifth floor, I paid the fifty rmb for the entrance and was guided to have a seat on the fourth floor. The fifth floor, or the actual bar, had a British event going on. People arrived in a steady pace and the room got packed pretty quickly. Actually many people had problems finding seats, since it was more like a lounge with large sofas, not a place to have events like this. I think that there were more than fifty people in the room in the end. The event started about forty-five minutes late and they had problems with showing videos and the microphone did some echo in the beginning. So not too well prepared if you ask me.

The first speaker was Sarah Chu, head of marketing for Ecco, who talked about what Ecco has changed about themselves after entering the Chinese market, in other words a bit about market strategies and brand image. For example Ecco makes different colors and models of shoes in China that aren’t on sale in the Scandinavian countries. Also the advertisement is more luxurious in China, with some well-known celebrities as their face, as in other countries Ecco is seen as a pretty normal brand compared to Clarks.

The second speaker was Swedish fashion designer Victoria Chan, who talked about the challenges of entering the Chines market with a well-established brand in Sweden. After arriving six months ago in China, she thought launching her brand in Shanghai would be easy, just to find out that the market doesn’t work in the same way as in Sweden. Shanghai has a boutique culture, and getting her brand into a mixed brand store is hard, since there aren’t too many of them in the city. She also talked about problems with people copying her dresses, and selling them for a cheaper price as well as how expensive it is to get your clothes on show in a magazine. In China designers pay for all the exposure in magazines and also editors attending events get paid. All in all magazines are just product placements and something a new brand can’t afford.

The third speaker was Finnish Kirsi Rauhala, who talked about Lindex and her career. She has worked previously in China and Asia, so she let us know how the markets and business has changed over the years and how she feels it will be in the future. Overall the presentations were great, but the place was too small for that many people and waiting for the event to start was big negative experience. The event should have ended at ten, but as the organizer announced a bit after nine, that now was the time to move over to the roof and mingle, I decided to leave. The last metro going from Guanglan lu towards my home stop leaves after ten, so I hurried over to the metro line two and made it to one of the last metros.

Moller Villa

I have wondering for quite some time where this mansion is located and now I found it by mistake. I was on my way to the Garden Book Store when I had to cross over one large road and under Yan an elevated high way. The mansion is pretty spectacular and so out of place in the middle of the cities high rise buildings and old Chinese lane houses. I had read some reviews of the place, and there they said that it is hard to take pictures of the house, or maybe inside the house, because the staff will ask you to leave. I just snapped some shots at the entrance gate instead. The house was built in 1936 by a Swede and now it has been turned into a hotel.

Kotiinkuljetukset

Packages are tide onto the sides of the scooter

I got my new detox pack today and after drinking the first nut milk, I can say that probably all of the drinks in the previous pack were spoilt, since this tasted nothing like the one before. I’m really glad they were able to send a new pack and this time the driver called when he arrived, instead of just guessing that nobody might not be at home. The driver delivered the pack with a car, but I’m more used to delivery men driving a scooter. I have ordered lots of things from the internet, but most items have been dropped off at CCs sisters’ home, since we use her boyfriend’s account when ordering from Taobao.

Lately I have ordered lots of things for the kitchen, as some basic things are missing from a Chinese kitchen. The first thing was an oven that I use a lot when preparing food. It is large, in fact so large that it doesn’t fit in the kitchen, but luckily easy to move around. I also bought lots of bowls, a peeler and a slicer. The newest item is an electric mixer, since beating eggs with a chopstick became a bit tiresome.

Most packages are delivered with a scooter that has a large basket in the back. When having lots of packages, the driver sometimes things them with ropes onto the side of the basket, and some packages might fall of. I have seen this happen a few times and ones I even show one driver that he dropped his package when he didn’t notice. During a rainy day, the package will arrive most certainly really wet. Or maybe they have just dropped my package in a puddle on the way.

On Saturday I started my first day of detox. I had five drinks per day that I consumed together with some food, as we were advised not to do the detox without eating. In the morning I replaced milk with nut milk that I had with my cereal. For lunch I had some pie I made yesterday and a green juice that tasted really bad in the beginning since I have never had a green juice before. You get used to the taste, but still it isn’t anywhere near delicious. On the second day I had a beetroot juice with my lunch, which tasted a lot better. I replaced my dinner with two juices, one matcha nut milk and another slimming green juice. In between juices I ate nuts and fruits to stay as clean as possible. During the first day I thought I was able to go and work out at the gym, but after getting a headache, feeling nausea and my stomach getting filled with gas, I wasn’t able to work out more than thirty minutes. In other words my body didn’t quite understand why I hadn’t eaten as much as I used to, but on the other hand the next day I was already used to the juices and the day went on a bit better. I don’t feel like the detox cleaned anything, but instead I learned how I should balance my meals in the future.

I also bought a work out set for CC, including five juices and two sets of snack to divide during two sessions of training. One green juice should be consumed one hour before training, one during exercise and one nut milk in the end. The juice taken during training tasted like alcohol and had been spoilt even before the 72 hours were up, so I sent an email to the company and asked what happened to my juices as other ones started to spoil on the second day. I got a reply where they told me they would send me a new pack for free, so now there will be a second detox during this week.

Sataa tai paistaa

On my way home from the gym on a sunny and warm spring day

We didn’t go out much during the Qingming holiday that lasted for three days. The reason for this was the weather. It started raining a day before the holiday and it is currently still raining. The rain is sometimes really heavy and this makes the streets look like a river. We have also experienced some lightning and thunder storms during the last couple of days. Before the rain started, we had a day that was maybe a bit too hot and sunny, when the temperature rose to a +31 degrees Celsius. Nowadays it feels like you can’t go out since it is either raining or being too hot. I’m waiting for those perfect days that had clear skies and temperature around 20 in the beginning of this month.
