Siiderikauppa

We were walking around our town in the weekend, and found a place selling draft beer. I wanted to show CC what cider is and when inside the store to look for some. I did find some cider, which is quite remarkable, as no Chinese people drink it. Quite expensive at it was some 30-40rmb, but that’s what you have to pay if you want imported alcohol. The shop also had some Swedish granola and other interesting imported food that I didn’t think could be found in our town, which is  one hours away from Puxi with all its western chains.

The seller told us that they were opening a western style pizza place later in the year. I find the place we live in slowly becoming better and better. I used to not like living here at all, but due to Disney opening up nearby, the place has transformed quite a lot. If we get back to the beer store I found, I wanted to add that I got the shops chat number and added it to Wechat, the owner of the shop was so happy to hear that someone was buying cider from his shop that he asked if there was any brand I wanted him to find for me. Let’s see if in the future he can find any Finnish products for me. Anyways, it is nice to find a shopkeeper in my town, who is able to communicate fluently in English.

Jonottamisen puute

Huomaa, kuinka samanlaista monen ulkomaalaisen elämä Shanghaissa on. Etenkin se, miten he käyttäytyvät.

I have been reading many blogs about expats living in Shanghai. I found most of the other blogs amusing and I feel related as many of the things they have done or experienced are closely related to what I have seen and done. People, who have never lived or maybe not even travel in China, might think some of the things expats say or do, seem rude. As someone living here, almost nothing is rude in China. The culture is so different, and even though I am quite calm and peaceful, sometimes things that happen just in China make me almost furious. One of these things is cutting in line. The latest experience was yesterday, when I was standing in line to pay in Marks and Spencer’s food section. There was one guy in front of me paying when an older Chinese woman came next to me and put her two bags of peanuts or something on the counter. CC stood a bit further away so he didn’t notice anything, so I told him in Chinese that the woman is trying to get in front of me. At first she tried not to notice, but then she told us that the bags where so heavy that she had to put them down. It seemed like the most made up lie ever, as older Chinese and people from the countryside don’t ever wait in line, and she seemed to be one of those that don’t follow the common rules. In China, people cut in line and stand really close to you when you are e.g. paying. So here was a small insight to the culture of China. Don’t expect them to stand in line, as usually one line ends up being a group of people coming from every direction.

Jinke Lu pizzaa

Last week, CC and I went to Jinke Lu mall to eat dinner. We looked around and decided to try a pizza place we haven’t been to before. There are so many new restaurants to try, but since CC likes pizza, we opted for this one. We had the couples menu, something many places have. So one starter, one main and one dessert with two drinks cost some 170rmb. Not the cheapest option, but the restaurant was quite popular. The pizzas were good, but not so excellent that we would go there again.

Syksyn ostoksia

Liila reppu sopii paremmin retkirepuksi. Tälläistä täällä Kiinassa voi ostaa yhteensä viidelläkymmenellä eurolla.

Here are my latest buys from Autumn. We found a new sneaker guy, as the last one quit, and from this one I bought some Vans sneakers. The come straight from the factory with a lower price than what you get from the stores. I wanted to buy some Nike sneakers with a similar flower motive, but maybe I should stick with this as long as possible.

I also wanted to buy a Maison Michel hat for quite some time. I just found expensive ones in shops, so ended up buying a cheaper one from Taobao instead. The quality is not good, but I like the style and fit. These hats are really popular in Shanghai right now.

Another thing that is getting more popular is Fjällräven backpacks. I bought a light blue one some months ago, which I have used as my gym bag. The bag was so good that I bought a second one in lila. I have started to notice lots of Chinese people using the Fjällräven bag, but not nearly as much as I have seen in Finland. All of these things together cost less than 400rmb.

KTV treffit

During the week we had a karaoke date with CC after work. I have wanted to go for a long time, but we managed to do it last week for the first time. There are many songs I’d like to sing, but not in front of other people. Now I could choose anything and sing for a longer time, compared to those times when you have a share with more than five people. The mini room that is meant for max five people cost under 100rmb for two hours. The nearest KTV is located just five minutes from our home, so easy and convenient entertainment during the week.

Baobao laukku

Here again is a bag that I didn’t like when I first saw it. These were fashionable in Singapore a year ago, but not until I found it in this color combination, did I realize that I wanted it. Not all stalls in the market had it, so it was hard to get it for a cheap price. At first some of them had the price as high as 600rmb. Some stalls sold plastic ones in different colors, but only those selling the better quality ones, with smooth finish, looked good. I didn’t buy the bag during the first trip, but the second time, when I was hunting for some other things in the market. In the end one of the sellers followed me for a good five minutes until she realized I wouldn’t change my price, and I got it for 140rmb. Still not what I wanted to pay, but one of the other sellers was genuinely surprised I could buy it so cheaply.

My German friend gave me as a gift this watch as a thank you for giving her a ride to the airport today. I didn’t recognize the brand, but she told me it was popular at the moment. The watch is great, but I will see how long it will last.

DG sini-valkoinen takki

I bought this jacket back in October, but since I haven’t worn it that much, I have forgotten to post about it. I bought it for a wedding, but since it was hot in September, I could not wear it. I liked the color and print, I wasn’t sure about the fit, but it looks good. It is somewhat small at the shoulders, but there weren’t bigger sizes, so it will do. The jacket was quite expensive, costing 600rmb after haggling for a while with one of my Science and Technology sellers. She send the better products with delivery, so I could not see it in advance.

Syksyisä sää

Sun behind the skyscrapers of Pudong

The weather here in Shanghai has now completely changed. Autumn has started and winter is getting closer. Some weeks ago, I could still walk bare legged outside, but now jacket and pants is a must. It gets darker earlier than six o’clock but it is still quite dark during the days when we have rain. I know it is already November, and after a month I will need to start wearing my winter jacket, a hat and gloves, but it still feels like summer ended too quickly. Maybe it is because the best time in Shanghai is before and after the summer months, as those months are too hot. 20-28 degrees are more comfortable and as soon as the temperature drops under 20, it feels cold. Otherwise I have been quite happy with the weather during the last two months. The air has been clean most of the time, and now the bad times will come, when they start heating and the air will become polluted.

Työpaikkaruokaa

Dish from Family Mart that I have eaten once almost every week at work

A normal set of food in the canteen

Some food I ordered together with other colleges

Rice mixed with vegetables is quite good

Cucumber with egg, noodles, seaweed soup and rice costs 7rmb

One of the places to eat at in the company

Sometimes the skyscrapers in Lujiazui can be seen from the the dining room

The food in the canteen at work is something most of the Chinese don’t like. I, however, find it quite ok. I usually go to the canteen some two times a week. If I don’t get there exactly at 12 o’clock when the break starts, there might not be many dishes left. The building complex has so many companies, that when I get down from the seventh floor, there might already be a queue of 100 people in front of me. When I’m lucky, there is nobody queuing.

There are always 3-4 meat dishes ranging from fish to chicken and beef. I avoid these, as they look too suspicious and opt for two of the eight vegetable dishes instead. If there is any rice mixed with meat or vegetables, I will choose it, but otherwise I ate plain rice. I also take a bowl of soup and the flavors differ somewhat. Overall the food doesn’t change a lot, so that is why I don’t go there every day.

Instead I go twice every week to Family Mart and buy some dishes before going to work. The dishes in Family Mart cost double the price of what I pay in the canteen and I have eaten their chicken and curry dishes way too often now.  Sometimes I order together with colleges food, but it isn’t that good, so I stick to Family Mart or the canteen.
