1933

The former slaughter, the 1933 building, is located on the left side of the picture

We ate lunch in the Ferrari owners' club

Lots of magazines to read in the restaurant
Apparently there was a real Ferrari owners club in the building...
The nearby building were also quite interesting
Paikka on tuttu Running Man nimisestä tv-sarjasta, mutta muuta en paikasta tiennytkään.

On Saturday morning CC had to drive his mother with some friends to Hongkou, so we seized the moment and went to a place called 1933 during the same trip. 1933 is a former slaughter house that has been transformed into a shopping, dining and entertainment complex. The building is most famous for its unique style and lots of people wandered around taking pictures. We were quite hungry so we looked what some of the restaurants had to offer. Two places had almost the same menu, but the Ferrari owners’ club was more interesting, so I chose to eat there. The restaurant followed the Formula 1 theme with a car in the middle of the space and some other car related stuff on display and for sale. We had some spaghetti, hamburger, onion rings and mushroom soup for 90rmb. After lunch we walked around the place. Actually there was not much to see, but still it is an interesting place, when all the other major sights have been seen too many times. Outside the building lots of Ferraris and Lamborghinis, and other expensive cars were parked, so maybe there really was a club devoted to the owners, or then they were just there for display?

Kuvaus liikenteestä

Olen keksinyt kaksi lausetta, jotka kuuvavat Kiinan liikennettä aivan loistavasti:

Jalankulkijat kävelevät ajotiellä, autot ajavat polkupyöräkaistalla ja mopot ajavat jalkakäytävällä.

Punaisella ajetaan ja vihreällä odotetaan.

Tälläinen siis Shanghain liikenne suurimaksi osaksi on.

I have come up with two sentences that describe the traffic of China:

People walk on the main road, cars drive on the bike lane and moped drive on the sidewalk.

During red light you drive and during green light you stop.

Kiinalaiset häät maaseudulla

The bride and groom at the make up studio
An expensive wedding blanket and pillows that are part of Chinese wedding tradition
There were lots of pictures of the couple, I wonder it they will use each picture
Wedding decoration
Decoration of the house looked more like a birthday than a wedding
The Chinese symbol for marriage
Me watching the military parade for the second time

I thought it was snake, but turned out it was just the snakeish fish
Yes, just stack the dishes on top of each other...
This was what was inside our goodie bag

Ajoimme itsekin meikkauspaikkaan, jossa minulle tehtiin kampaus.

During our time in Anhui, we went to a wedding. The groom is the brother of CCs good friend, so we participated to give a “good face” for the friend. The wedding was nothing like I had expected, and quite frankly I’m glad we will attend another wedding next month, since this wedding wasn’t in anyway well-organized or even slightly interesting. Summarizing the event, we ate three times and that was it.

We arrived in the city that was an hour away from Anqing, one day before the wedding. We ate dinner with the family the night before. During that day CC was the chauffeur for the groom, who in last minute realized he still needed to buy e.g. a tie. The next day CC again got up early and drove the groom and bride to hair and make up. Moments later, he came back to pick me up, even though I rather would have continued sleeping. No time to do make up as I was rushed to get my hair done next to the bride.

After this we drove the bride back to her home, as the groom drove off with his six or eight Audis that were rented for this day. A Chinese wedding tradition is to have lots of expensive cars, so that the family looks wealthy to the outside. We dropped the bride off and headed back to the groom’s apartment, where there were some relatives gathered to watch the military parade in Beijing. At about eleven o’clock, most of the men left to drive to the brides home to have dinner. I was left behind and together with Chinese relatives that I had never met before went out to have lunch at the same restaurant as the day before. It wasn’t a too pleasant experience with the host and an aunt trying to get me to try every dish and people toasting with me when I had no idea for what. The toast is also a tradition that I had luckily studied somewhat to know what I was supposed to do.

After lunch we went back to the apartment where people decorated the place. Some hours later the men came back with the bride. We left for the hotel to have a rest, as at five o’clock we would have dinner at the hotel. Now there were more people, and we were sitting at three tables. The food was quite similar to what we had had before.

After dinner it was it, so no cake and nothing else. We drove the camera man back home and played some mahjong with the groom’s brother and fried before going to sleep. We also received a goodie bag after the dinner, but on the other hand everybody should give a red envelope containing at least 500rmb, although me and CC gave it together.

Hefein monumentti

Hefei is a city with not so much to see or do. We have once before been to the city and during that trip we went to the city centers shopping street and amusement park. This time we went to a mountain nearby the hotel together with one of Ccs friends. We climbed lots of stairs until we reached a war monument. I think it was a monument of the Japan and China war. Chinese people like to talk and remember the war a lot, I think they do it too often. Behind the monument there were some tomb stones of people that died in the war or maybe had participated in the war. This graveyard was much more westerner than the ones I have seen in the past. After this we continued climbing up the mountain along a small path. We came about half way before we turned back down, since the peak wasn’t anything special. Before we reached the parking lot we went to a place that looked like a park, but in fact it was the tomb of some important person from long time ago. When we finally left, a big group of government workers started climbing the stairs towards the monument.

Kakkukupit

CC täytti vuosia ja ostin synttärikakuksi kaksi kakkukuppia. Tiramisu ja banaani kakut maksoivat noin kuusi euroa kappale. Todella hauska idea, ja helppo kuljettaa mukanaan. Kakkuja kyllä kiinassa saa halvemmallakin, mutta tällaiset tuli vastaan Crystal Galleriassa Jinganissa.

CC had his birthday during this week, so I prepared by buying some cute cake cups. I found the cakes in Crystal Gallery in Jingan and they cost some 38rmb. Good idea, as these were easier to transport than a normal cake. On the other hand you can find cheaper and better cakes from all over China.

Huonepalvelua

I ordered room service, as I was too lazy to go outside to find a restaurant after my swim. I ordered some Nasi Goreng, Indonesian rice with chicken, and Indian curry. The woman taking my order told that the dishes would be served in my room at two o’clock, so 40 minutes later. The food arrived some 10 minutes earlier and the woman coming with the dishes didn’t have change, or even a card machine for that matter, so she had to run and get some change for me. While I was waiting for some five minutes I got really hungry and my food was just waiting there and getting cold. When she came back she handed over the change and left. She did not even remove the covers from the dishes. The food was not as good as I had hoped and the curry included pieces of meat, that western people do not eat, but Chinese people like.

We had some cake in the hotel lobby to celebrate CCs birthday. After six o’clock the cakes were discounted by 50% so this cake cost just some 15rmb. The lobby had live music with a man playing piano and a woman singing in Chinese.

Hotelliliikuntaa

The swimming pool and gym was located next to each other on the second floor. We needed to sign in at a counter and get a towel and an electronic key to the locker. The changing room was quite fantastic, with large showers with curtains, a steam room and a small sauna. Everything was provided, except for your own bath suite. There were sandals, towels, shampoo, hair dryer, even a plastic bag for your wet swim wear to be put in. Like in every swimming pool in China, you have to wear a swim cap. CC didn’t have any, but this was also provided by the hotel.

The swimming pool was bigger than expected and just one person was swimming with us in the beginning and later on it was just us two with guard on duty. In addition to the large pool, there was one small cold pool, which was not exactly cold on my standard, one small hot pool and one baby pool. I really liked the pool area with lots of sun beds and chairs to relax on.

We also went to the gym that had all the equipment you could need. It was even better than the gym back home, since the equipment was newer and better. Most people were running on the treadmill, but some were also lifting weights. Here you could also get a small towel and drinks including two different teas and water. The gym was quite large and there was lots of space, so no need to go too close to each other.

Crowne Plaza

Picture of outside from hotel website
Picture of room from hotel wesite

Vietimme kaksi yötä Hefein Crowne Plaza hotelissa.

We spent two nights in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Hefei. The hotel was good, but the service not as excellent as I would imagine a place like this would have. Even though there were western people staying there in addition to me, the staff wasn’t always able to communicate in English. The room we had was quite nice and big. We had a large bedroom with a bathroom that had separate toilet, shower and bathtub. The wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom could be slide to the side and this made adding water to the boiler much easier. The hotel had also an indoor swimming pool and gym that we had time to go to.

Actually I didn’t feel like we had enough time to use all the commodities of the hotel, as we were most of the time outside. In other words the amount of time spent in the hotel was so little, that we could have just as well got a cheaper hotel. We arrived late on the day of check in and the first day we went out for dinner and only came back late in the evening. The second day we had time in the hotel, but not as much as I would have liked. The last day and check out day we didn’t have any time to spend in the hotel and I was barely able to come back in time to pack up before we had to check out at two o’clock.
