Shanghai First Foodhall

Nanjing Roadin kuuluisasta First Foodhall ruokamarketista kävin ostamassa pari tuliaista kotiin vietäväksi. Paikka on sen verran kiinnostava, että vähän kuviakin tuli otettua. Olen vain käynyt alimassa kerroksessa, jossa makeiset ja länsimaalaiset tuotteet löytyvät, mutta kerroksia taitaa olla viisi tai kuusi. Hinnat ovat suhteellisen kalliit, mutta en ole tainnut muualla näitä pakkauksia nähnyt ja muutenkin asiakaskunta on suurimmaksi osaksi turisteja.

                                                                                                                                                                 

From the famous Nanjing Road I bought some souvenirs to take home. I bought some sweets from the First Foodhall and I only visited the first floor, where they have Western food and Chinese sweets. The place is pretty interesting with lots of people. On the other hand the place isn’t cheap, but they have lots of fun Shanghai sweets.

Mikäli minulla koskaan tekee mieli länsimaalaista perus ruokaa, käyn aina Wagas kahvilassa lounaalla. Tällä kertaa kokeilin jotain uutta, eli kävin Wagas Limited kahvilassa, joka sijaitsee Jinganissa. Täällä erikoisuutena voi saada käsin tehtyä pastaa, joten tilasin annoksen spagetti carbonaaraa. Olin yllättynyt, ettei henkilökunta puhunut yhtään englantia, vaikka kahvila sijaitsee aivan keskustassa, ja muissa Wagas ketjun paikoissa englanti sujuu hyvin. Lisäksi palvelu ei oikein pelannut, tai sitten se täällä ”limited” kahvilassa on sanan mukaisesti rajoitettu palvelu. Juoma pitää itse baarista noutaa, vaikka muissa kahviloissa tarjoilija tuo pöytään juoman, ja useassa paikassa he ovat jopa tulleet ottamaan tilauksia vastaan. Mutta ei siis täällä. Tilasin siis juomaksi Shiseidon punajuuri-päärynä juoman, joka koostui suurimmaksi osaksi ainoastaan vaahdosta. Hyi kauheaa, kun vielä olisin vain halunnut oikean vetisen mehun. Toiseksi ns. käsintehty pasta ei ollut mitään herkkua. Itse jopa voin tehdä paremman annoksen. piti jopa jättää syömättä kun annoksesta tuli sen verran paha olo! Ja minä kun tykkään kaikista Wagasin annoksista. Onneksi päivän pelasti sisar kahvila Baker and Spice, josta tuli ostettua kanelipulla. Siellä he sentään puhuvat englantia. Ei tämä englannin puute nyt muuten haittaisi, sillä tilaanhan kotosalla aina kiinaksi, mutta kun nyt keskustassa on sen verran paljon länsimaalaisia, odottaisin Tanskalaisten omistaman kahvilan henkilökunnan osaavan puhua edes jotain englanniksi!

                                                                                                                                                                

If I need western food I always went to Wagas to eat. This time I tried the Wagas Limited cafe in Jingan. I was actually pretty disappointed with this café. I’m used to the staff speaking English, but here nobody spoke English. In the other Wagas stores staff might come with the menu to the table and take your orders and also bring you the stuff to the table after you have ordered, but not in this café. Maybe they have got the name limited from the fact that service is quite limited. You have to get the drink from the bar and as I didn’t know this, someone from the staff came and looked for me and told me to go to the bar instead of just handing over the drink. Since I was in the limited shop I ordered their hand made spaghetti carbonara , which more expensive than the normal ones. I also ordered the Shiseido beetroot and pear drink for fun. Both were horrible. The spaghetti was worse than what I’m able to do. I almost felt sick after eating half of it, not sure why… The drink wasn’t any better, as half of it was just foam. I was hoping for a refreshing juice, but no, I only got dry and warm foam. I had better luck with Baker and Spice café, which also is owned by the same team as Wagas. There the staff speaks English and are happy to serve you. Just like last time, I only got a cinnamon roll, since it is hard to find a decent bun anywhere else in the city. 

Ostoksilla vanhassa kaupungissa

Lähdin heti kuntosalin jälkeen kaupunkiin ostoksille. Tarkoituksena oli käydä yksin vaatemateriaali markkinoilla, sillä olen aikaisemmin käynyt CCn kanssa yhdessä, ja hän ei kovin pitkään jaksa seurailla minun kävellessäni kojusta kojuun katsomassa mitä on tarjolla, kun jokainen koju myy melkeinpä samaa tavaraa. Tällä kertaa minulla oli siis aikaa kierrellä niin pitkään kuin vain halusin. Olin jo viime kerralla etsinyt niittejä, mutta niitä ei sillä kertaa ollut tullut vatsaan. Ja ei sinänsä ihme, etten löytänyt, sillä ne olivat kojujen näytepöytien alimmalla tasolla. Eli mikäli ei kyykkisi, niittejä ei löytäisi. Kappale hinnat eivät ole edes sentin arvoisia, joten ostin niittejä sadoittain. Niitä sitten käytän esim. takkien koristamiseen. Markkinoilla on myös paljon turkiskappoja, joita en aikaisemmin ole katsellut, mutta huomasin yhdessä liikkeessä turkispalloja, ja ostin yhden ison kolmella eurolla ja kaksi pientä 1,5 eurolla. En tiedä olivatko aitoja tai ei, sillä en muutenkaan uskoisi myyjää, joten ei tullut kysyttyä. Markkinoilla on yllättävän paljon tarvikkeita joita voisi käyttää tehdessään vaatteita, mutta jotenkin on vaikeata tietää mitä ostaa, kun en tällä hetkellä ole valmistamassa mitään.

Ulkona alkoi tihkuttamaan, mutta kävelin silti Yu Yuan basaarien poikki. Paljon ihmisiä oli paikalla, joten en jäänyt pidemmäksi aikaa, vaan jatkoin kävellen eteenpäin. Huomasin yhdellä kadulla taas kerran pienen liikkeen, joka möi länsimaalaisia ruokatarvikkeita. En olisi ostanut mitään, jollen olisi huomannut heidän tarjoukset. 1,5 eurolla sai kolme pussia vohvelikeksejä ja 3 eurolla sai kolme pakettia super hyviä marenkikeksejä. Hyvä näitä keksejä varastoon ostaa, sillä tiedossa olisi taas kerran kahdeksan tunnin bussimatkat Anqingiin.

                                                                                                                                                                 

After my gym session I headed off to the city center. I have gone twice to the clothing accessories market, but both times CC was with me, so I didn’t have time to go through every stall slowly. hehe. So this time I went alone and looked for some studs that I could use for clothes. They were hard to find and I actually had to walk here and there to find a seller. Most sellers had the studs on the lowest level of their display tables, so I had to bend down and look for them. One stud cost some 0,1rmb, so I bought hundreds. Nobody actually sold the size that I was looking for, so I took some smaller ones in gold, black and metallic grey. I also looked in the fur shops that I had just walked past when I had visited the market in the past. They had cute balls of fur and a big ball cost 20rmb and small ones 5rmb. No idea what I’m going to use them for, but they were so soft that I had to buy some.

After finishing with browsing the stalls I walked over to the bazaars of Yu Yuan Garden. There were lots of people as always, so I didn’t stay for long. On my way to my next destination I came across a small store selling western food. Like always I just looked inside and didn’t find anything interesting, but on my way out I saw their discount items at the entrance. I bought three bags of waffle cookies for 10rmb and three packs of those delicious merengue cookies for 20rmb.

Olen monesta Shanghain oppaasta lukenut lintu ja ötökkä markkinoista, mutta en ole vaivautunut menemään sinne aikaisemmin. Paikka oli loppujen lopuksi ihan käynnin arvoinen, sillä muualla ei tule vastaan markkinoita, jossa heinäsirkat ja linnut laulavat kovaan ääneen. Vaikka markkinat nyt suurimmaksi osaksi möi sekä lintuja ja häkkejä, että heinäsirkkoja tappeluita varten, paikalla oli myös paljon paikkoja jotka möivät eläimiä, kaloja, kukkia, eläintarvikkeita ja vanhoja kiinalaisia koruja. Kiersin ympäri ja huomasin naisen, joka syötti heinäsirkkoja pistämällä pienen pavun jokaisen heinäsirkan häkkiin. Meillähän on nyt kotona ollut koira jonkin aikaa, joten ostin sille shampoota, harjan ja pureskelutikkuja noin seitsemällä eurolla.

                                                                                                                                                                

The bird and insect market can be found in lots of guide books if you want to experience the real Shanghai market, but I haven’t gone there until now. The market wasn’t as big as I had imagined but still pretty cool. The sound might be a bit overwhelming with thousands of crickets and birds singing. As the name of the market already explains, most sellers sold birds and bird cages or crickets to use in cricket fights. The rest of the shops had some other small animals, animal products, fish, flowers or old Chinese jewelry. As I walked around I saw a woman feeding the crickets by putting a bean inside their cage. I wasn’t looking to buy any cricket fighter, but I stumbled upon a shop selling pretty cheap dog products, so I bought shampoo for 30rmb, a comb for 10rmb and some snack for 9rmb.

Tutustuin kuntosalilla Puolalaiseen, joka asuu Saksassa, mutta on nyt vuodeksi muuttanut miehensä kanssa asumaan samalle alueelle, kuin minäkin. Kovasta rankkasateesta huolimatta tapasimme eilen illalla ja kävelimme ympäri kunnes löysimme kivan baarin, jossa kumpikaan ei ollut aikaisemmin käynyt. Parin tunnin juttelun jälkeen lähdimme kotia päin ja onneksi siinä vaiheessa sade oli loppunut. Tällä alueella ei siis muita länkkäreitä paljon näe, joten olimme molemmat ajatelleet olleemme ainoat, joten onneksi tapasimme sattumalta kuntosalilla.

                                                                                                                                                                         

I met a Polish girl at the gym a week ago. She lives in Germany, but moved to the same area as I live in with her husband for one year. We both thought we were the only western people living here, but luckily we were wrong. Good that we meet up in the gym, since yesterday we went out for a beer in the evening. It was raining heavily but we managed to find a bar no one had been to before. After a couple of hours the rain stopped and we returned home. It is nice to have somebody live close by with whom I can go to all the places in this area that CC isn’t that interested in.

Tässä joitain kuvia kotiruoasta. Suurimmaksi osaksi ruoan valmistaa isäpuoli, joka tekee nämä annokset noin puolessatoista tunnissa. Normaalisti pöydässä on enemmän kuin viisi eri annosta, ja omaan riisikulhoon voi syömäpuikoilla noukkia mitä itse haluaa syödä. Annoksista suurin osa on vihanneksia, mutta pöydässä on aina jotain liha- tai kala-annoksia. Myös tofu, kananmuna ja sieniannoksia on paljon tarjolla joka viikko. Aina silloin tällöin löytyy myös näitä kiinana ihmeellisyyksiä kuten kanan jalkoja. Annokset vaihtelevat melko hyvin, joten ainoastaan riisin syönti on alkanut tökkiä viime aikoina. Olen siis alkanut itse valmistamaan perunamuusia lounaaksi, jotta riisiä jaksaa syödä edes kerran päivässä.

                                                                                                                                                                 

Here are some pics from our dinner table at home. The dinner is prepared almost every day by the stepfather who buys most food products fresh from the market every day. Then it takes about one and a half hour for him to prepare more than five different dishes that are served at about five pm. Most of the dishes are some sort of vegetable dishes and the rest are meat. We also eat a lot of mushrooms and tofu every week. I have also stumbled upon Chinese delicacies such as chicken feet, but usually the rest of the dishes are somewhat eatable.

Ei mitkään parhaimmat kuvat viime viikonlopun ravintola illallisesta. CC oli koko lauantain pelannut työporukan kanssa sulkapalloa, ja pelien loputtua porukka siirtyi ravintolaan syömään. Tulin sattumalta samaan aikaan kotiin keskustasta, joten menin itsekin syömään. Työporukalla oli oma huone ravintolan yläkerrassa ja työntekijät oli jaettu kolmeen pöytään. Paikalla oli noin neljäkymmentä henkeä ja ruokaa tuli niin paljon, että lopuksi jotkut täyttivät muovikipot ja veivät loput ruoasta kotiin. Annoksia oli siis lähemmäs parikymmentä per pöytä ja niitä tuotiin pöytään sitä mukaan kun ne keittiössä valmistui. Eipä mitään erikoista ruokaa, vaan melko perus kiinalaista, jota olen muuallakin syönyt. Ainoastaan loppuun tuli sammakkoa, jota kukaan ei syönyt, joten en minäkään kehdannut koskea. Ruokailun loputtua pöytä oli todella sotkuinen normaaliin tapaan, sillä kaikki mitä ei voi syödä, kuten esim. luut syljetään pöytäliinalle!

Kiinalaiset ovat kovia juomaan, ja etenkin skoolaaminen kuuluu jokaiseen illalliseen. Varsinkin työntekijät käyvät skoolaamassa esimiesten kanssa, ja sehän tarkoittaa, että esimiehet saavat juoda melko paljon. Tällä kertaa juotiin vain olutta, mutta riisiviinaakin juodaan kiinalaisissa tapahtumissa. Parin tunnin skoolaamisen jälkeen jotkut alkoivat maksamaan muille, jotta he joisivat heidän lasinsa. Täällä siis usein skoolataan juomalla koko lasi kerralla. Monelle raha ja olut olivat liikaa, ja monet juoksivat vessaan useasti voidakseen jatkaa juomista.. CC joi yhden lasillisen olutta toisen henkilön puolesta ja sai käteen viisi euroa. Jotkut taisivat tarjoutua juomaan enemmän kuin kolme lasillista. Jotenkin todella outo kulttuuri juottaa johtajat känniin ja kierrellä pöydästä toisiin skoolatakseen muittenkin kanssa. 

                                                                                                                                                                  

Not the best pictures of last weekend’s restaurant meal. CC had been playing badminton with some colleges, and after playing for four hours they went together to eat dinner at a restaurant. I was just on my way home from the city, so I joined them at the restaurant. Since there were some forty people, they had gotten a private room. We had so much food that in the end some girls took some plastic containers and took the leftovers back home. We had about twenty different Chinese dishes, from which most I had eaten before. Only the last dish, frog meat, was something nobody in my table touched. In the end the table looked like a mess, mostly because Chinese people spit things they don’t want to eat, such as bones, on the table. 

Chinese people love toasting during dinner. Especially employees go from table to table and toast with their superiors. In other words the bosses end up drinking quite a lot during one dinner and I’m amazed that they can take so much alcohol. During this dinner we only drank beer, but Chinese people also like the stronger drinks such as rice wine. At some point people started paying others to take a toast instead of themselves, meaning somebody else drank their glass empty. I just find it weird trying to make your boss drink lots of lots of “shots” during a dinner, but maybe this is the most fun part when the office goes out together? 

Kenzo aurinkolasit

Löysin jonkin aikaa sitten kaupan Science and Technology markkinoilta, joka myy vaatteita ja kenkiä. Ostin sieltä ensimmäisellä kerralla bikinit ja sain samalla liikkeen omistajan wechat tiedot. Wechat toimii kuin whats up ja pystyn sieltä seuraamaan mitä uusia tuotteita liikkeeseen tulee ja mitä hänen kautta voi tilata. Olen jo viikon ajan seuraillut mm. kenkiä ja aurinkolaseja ja tilasin viime viikolla kahdet kengät. Niistä sitten myöhemmin ehkä lisään. Ostaisin kaiken mitä vastaan tulee, mikäli hinnat eivät olisi sen verran korkeat verrattuna muihin markkinoiden liikkeisiin, mutta toisaalla laatu on parhaimmasta päästä täällä. Uusin ostos oli sitten Kenzon aurinkolasit. En edes tiennyt merkin valmistavan laseja. Myyjä oli tilannut liikkeeseen kaksi eri mallia, ja ilmoitti minulle milloin pääsisin kokeilemaan niitä, sillä minusta on vaikea ostaa kokeilematta. Pienempi malli ei ollut hullumpi, mutta halusin nimenomaan suuremmat. Olisin lisäksi halunnut eriväriset linssit, mutta ne saa vaan tilaamalla. Rahaa ei ollut maksaa molempia samalla, joten toinen pitää tilatessa maksaa sitten erikseen. No tällä hetkellä voin ihailla ensimmäistä paria. Voin lisätä, että lasien mukana tuli kotelo, liina ja pieni ruuvimeisseli ruuvien kiristämiseen, jotain mitä en ole muualla saanut aurinkolaeja ostaessani.

                                                                                                                                                                     

In the Science and Technology market I found a great shop with clothes and shoes that I bought my triangl bikini from. I added the owner on wechat, an app just like whats up, and I can follow her feed on what she has in the shop and what she can order for you. I have been looking at lots of shoes and sunglasses that she has to offer and it has been complicated to choose what I really want to buy. Namely the prices aren’t cheap compared to the other shops around, but not expensive either when you get a pretty well made product, not a cheap knockoff that will break at any time. I ordered some shoes from the shop and I might write about them later but now I will show the latest buy, a pair of Kenzo sunglasses. I didn’t know Kenzo had sunglasses before I saw them on her news feed. I actually wanted them in another color, but she got these in the shop so that I could come and try them on! She even sent me a message, telling me when they would arrive at her shop, as she usually sells them pretty quickly. She had two different styles for me to try on, but I liked the bigger one more. I didn’t have cash to buy two at once so the other pair will be ordered later on. I like her sunglasses better as they have UV protection and not like the copies that just are good looking but are useless when it is sunny outside.

Kiinassa ei syödä herkkuja samaan tapaan kuin länsimaissa. Keksejä löytyy kyllä kaikkialta, mutta esim. karkki ja jäätelövalikoima ovat pienempiä. Kiinalaiset herkuttelevat muulla, kuten hedelmillä ja vihanneksilla. Ravintoloista olen jo monesti tilannut maissia, joka on kuorrutettu sokerilla ja makealla majoneesilla. Toinen herkku on kuumaan sokeriin upotetut bataatit. Tulikuumana tarjoiltava bataattipalaset jäähdytetään vesikulhossa ennen kun ne syödään. Länkkäri herkkuja kyllä löytyy, mutta korkeaan hintaan. Kotimaiset jäätelöt ovat usein mehujäitä, joten jos haluaa kunnon kermajäätelön, joutuu menemään länkkäriruokakauppaan ja maksaa kympin yhdestä kiposta. Toisaalla aina silloin tällöin on pakko kokeilla Ben and Jerrys jäätelöiden uusia makuja. Kuten kuvassa oleva Cinnamon Bun oli aivan taivaallinen kun ei kanelipullia ole syönyt pitkään aikaan. Muitakin jänniä makuja on tullut vastaan, mutta ostohimoa pitää hillitä, ettei kaikkia rahoja jätskiin pistä.

                                                                                                                                                                    

Chinese people don’t eat sweets and desserts in the same way as most western countries do. Cookies can be found everywhere, but e.g. the ice cream selection is limited. Instead the Chinese chefs have become more creative and use vegetables as desserts. Ever since I tried corn and sugar I haven’t got tired of it and it is just great with some mayonnaise on top. Another goodness is sweet potato dipped in boiling sugar. The dish is so hot that the sweet potato pieces have to be first dipped in cold water. This is still a risky food to enjoy as it is so easy to burn your mouth. I still enjoy eating western ice cream, even though it comes with an expensive price tag and is hard to find. Ben and Jerry can be bought from Times Groceries for some 70rmb. But who can resist Cinnamon Bun ice cream, when you haven’t had decent bun in a long time?
