Kävelykierroksen aikana
kiersimme korttelin, jossa juutalaiset olivat asuneet toisen maailman sodan
aikana. Rakennukset on rakennettu 1920-luvulla ja juutalaisten siirrettyä
alueelle asumaan, paikkaa kutsuttiin pieneksi Viennaksi. Aikaisemmin
rakennuksissa oli paljon eurooppalaisia kahviloita, mutta mikään niistä ei enää
ollut pystyssä. Kävelimme myös vanhan Broadway teatterin ohi. Korttelin
lähistöllä oli jopa vankila. Todella outoa nähdä vankila melko keskustassa,
joka oli siis ihan toiminnassa. Takaportin edessä oli ihmisiä, luultavasti
perheenjäseniä, odottamassa, jotta he pääsisivät tervehtimään vankeja.
During
our walk around the former Jewish ghetto we saw some pretty nice buildings
built in the late 1920s. These were the houses that Jewish refugees stayed in
during world war two. When the community started to bloom, they opened up cafes,
and the place was called little Vienna. We also passed an old Broadway theater
and some other interesting architecture. Also a working prison was on the way.
It was weird seeing it in the middle of the city with people outside waiting to
go inside to visit some of the prisoners.
