| An introduction to the Forbidden City |
Vaikka olimme jo ajoissa
lähteneet hotellista kohti Kiellettyä Kaupunkia, olin yllättyä kuinka paljon
ihmisiä paikan päällä jo oli. Olin myös suunnitellut, että käynti kestäisi
varmasti noin kolme tuntia, mutta reippaasti kävelimme kaupungin läpi tunnissa.
Kävelimme kaupungin läpi eteläisestä portista melko suoraa akselia pitkin
pohjoiseen, eli läntiset ja itäiset osat jäivät näkemättä. Suosituimmat
rakennukset ovat keskellä kaupunkia ja niissä sijaitsi kaikki huoneet, jossa
keisari oli ollut, ja esillä oli keisarin istuimet. Kaupunki oli valtava ja
käveleminen kolmenkymmenen asteen auringonpaisteessa oli haasteellista kaikkien
turistien kanssa, kun jokainen rakennus oli ison aukion päässä. Periaatteessa Kielletyssä
Kaupungissa kävellään yhdestä rakennuksesta toiseen, ja melkeinpä kaikki
näyttivät samalta. Toisin sanoen paikka ei ollut niin hieno kun olin
kuvitellut, mutta ehkä olenkin katsonut liika elokuvia paikasta. Ainoa yllätys
tuli lopussa, sillä siellä sai kävellä keisarin puutarhan läpi. En ollut
tietoinen, että siellä on puutarha, joten se oli positiivinen yllätys, vaikka
olen kyllä hienompia puutarhoja nähnyt aikaisemmin Kiinassa.

Even though we had gotten up early for our visit
to the Forbidden City, I was still surprised how many people were there before
us. I had also planned that the visit would probably take up to three hours,
but we did it in only one hour! We started from the southern entrance and
walked through the city to the northern exit. In other words we didn’t visit
the building on the eastern and western sides, only looked at the most
important ones in the middle. The building we saw had the emperor’s throne in
each of the buildings. The buildings on the main road were separated by large
open grounds, so it took forever to walk to the next one in the sun as it was
thirty degrees outside. The palace wasn’t as fantastic as I had hoped for, but
maybe all the movies I had seen had given me unrealistic expectations, and of
course the amount of tourists made the place less spectacular. I was surprised
in the end as we got into the emperors garden, as I had no idea that there was
a garden in the palace.
