Emme olleet suunnitelleet menevämme katsomaan oopperaa, mutta hotelimme järjesti kuljetuksen sinne ja liputkaan eivät paljon maksaneet päätimme mennä. Ooppera pidettiin ison hotellin juhlasalissa, jossa puolet vieraista oli syömässä illallista ja loput istuivat katsomossa. Monet vieraista olivat länsimaalaisia, ja vaikutti olevan ruotsalaisten suosima paikka. Ennen kuin show alkoi, lavalla oli mies, joka teki itselleen ooppera meikkauksen. Avustaja tuli pistämään hänelle asun päälle ja lopuksi hän poseerasi valmis meikki ja vaatetus päällä. Olin varma, että hän esiintyisi meille, mutta ei nyt sentään. Ooppera oli jaettu kolmeen eri osaan. Esiintyjät eivät vaan laulaneet, vaan näyttelivät ja tekivät akrobatiaa samalla. Ohjelman kulkua pystyi seuraamaan kahdesta näytöstä, sillä kaikki oli kiinaksi, ja ilman näyttöjen englanninkielen käännöstä olisin ollut aivan hukassa. Ensimmäinen osa oli akrobaattinen. Eli se oli hauska tappelu-näytelmä kahden miehen keskellä, jotka ns. tappelivat pimeässä. Toinen osa oli keskustelu prinsessan ja hänen miehensä välillä. Itse asiassa he lauloivat kaiken, ja välillä oli lisätty humoristisia kommentteja. Kolmas ja viimeinen osa oli näytelmä hovinaisesta, joka luuli keisarin tulevan hänen luokseen illaksi, mutta jäi lopulta yksinäiseksi ja joi itsenä känniin. Tämäkin näytelmä oli humoristinen ja kahden hovimiehen keskustelut olivat hauskoja.  Toisin sanonen Pekingin Ooppera ei ollut vaan laulua, vaan se oli minusta todella viihdyttävä show, mikä oli onni, sillä en olisi yli tunnin jaksanut kuunnella mitään ooppera laulua.

We hadn’t planned on going to see the Beijing Opera, but as our hotel arranged tickets there every night to the show, we decided to go. The show was inside a large hotel and half of the guests were seated in the front enjoying dinner as the rest sat in the back. Most of the guests were Western, mostly Swedish. When we arrived there was a man on stage preparing his make-up. After he finished that another man came and helped him get dressed in a traditional costume. I thought he would be the main actor, but I was wrong since he didn’t appear after this. The opera was divided into three parts and the first one was an acrobatic show with two men pretending to be fighting in the dark and not knowing where the other one was. This scene was accompanied with music but no singing. The second part was a dialog between a princess and her husband. They sang out the dialog, which was humorous e.g. the princess said “why are you disturbing us when your son is pissing”. She had a doll in her arms and that sentence didn’t fit in at all in the topic they were discussing. The third part was about a concubine, who believed that the emperor was on his way to meet with her, but in the end he didn’t come so she got “charmingly” drunk instead. The audience could follow the story line from two large screens. I found the opera relay entertaining and it was nothing like I had expected it to be. I was positively surprised by this.
