Halusin viimeisinä päivinä Shanghaissa käydä syömässä, jossain hienomassa ravintolassa. Valinta oli M on the Bund ja Mr and Mrs Bundin välillä. Molemmat ovat kalliita ravintoloita, jotka sijaitsevat Bundilla. Lopulta varasin pöydän M on the Bund –ravintolasta, sillä heillä oli parempi viikonloppu brunssi menu. Brunssiin sisältyi joko kaksi tai kolme ateriaa ja juoma. Valitsimme kolmen ruoka-annoksenmenun, sillä halusin kerralla kokeilla niin paljon annoksia, kuin vain mahdollista. Poikaystävän kanssa vaihdamme annoksia, jotta molemmat saavat kokeilla erilaisia ruokia. Olin varannut pöydän jo pari viikkoa etukäteen, sillä en tiennyt miten helpolla pöytiä sitten saa samana päivänä. Varaaminen oli virhe, sillä minulla oli kuumetta sinä päivänä ja matkalla sinne olimme kääntymässä kotiinpäin, kun en tiennyt pystynkö mennä syömään. Emme kuitenkaan saaneet puhelimitse ravintolaa kiinni, joten päätimme lopulta mennä sinne, kun ei varausta saanut peruttua.

Saavuttuamme ravintolaan, se ei ollut vielä ovia avannut, joten jouduimme odottamaan odotustilassa monen länsimaalaisen kanssa. Ravintola ei taida olla kovin suosittu kiinalaisten kesken, sillä paikka tarjoaa eurooppalaista ja Lähi-idän ruokia. Brunssi menu oli kattava, ja sisälsi alkupaloja, pääruoan ja jälkiruokia. Lisäksi otin hintaan kuuluvan Bloody Maryn, joka jäi juomatta, sillä tabascoo oli lisätty sen verran paljon, että tulista juomaa kukaan meistä ei saanut juotua. Saimme ensiksi korillisen lämpimiä leipiä, jonka jälkeen alkupalat saapuivat. Sain tilata meidän molempien annokset, sillä minä sentään kaiken maksoin, ja kokeilimme mustikka pannukakkuja ja graavilohta, jonka alle oli kasattu kermaiset tilliperunat. Annosten koot olivat juuri sopivat, eli eivät liian pienet, vaikka ehkä jonkin verran simppelit annokset, joten paljon kuvia ei tullut otettua. Pääruoaksi otin jauhettupihvi, joka oli kasattu kahvikupin muotoiseksi keskelle lautasta. Paljon siis pihviä ei ollut, ja ranskalaiset olivat erikseen lisukkeina. Oma pääruokani oli kolme erilaista Tanskalaista voileipää. Yhdessä oli katkarapua, toisessa kaviaaria ja kolmannessa pihviä. Eivät sinänsä mitään erikoisia, mutta raaka-aineiden laatu oli varmasti loistava. Varmasti poikaystävän suureksi iloksi en pystynyt paljon syömään, joten hän sai melkein koko pääruoan itselleen.

Jälkiruoka oli brunssin kohokohta. Tilasin jonkin piirakan ja itselleni ravintolan kuuluisan marenkikakun. Oma jälkiruokani ole sen verran hyvä, että sinne kannattaa vain mennä jälkiruokaa syömään jatkossa. Jälkiruoan mukana tarjottiin teetä, ja saimme molemmat omat kannumme ja todella ihanat teekupit. Olisin varmasti kupit ostanut itselleni, mikäli hinta ei olisi ollut yli neljäkymmentä euroa, sillä ne olivat sen verran hienot. Suosittelen viikonloppubrunssia, sillä siinä sai kokeiltua niin monta annosta paljon halvemmalla, kun mitä tulisi maksamaan, jos niitä söisi illallisena.

I had in advance planned on going somewhere nice to eat during the last days of my stay in Shanghai. My decision on where to go came between M on the Bund and Mr & Mrs Bund. Both ones are good as well as have pricey menus and are located on the Bund. I ended up reserving a table at M on the Bund as they had a better brunch menu. Going to the restaurant for a lunch or dinner would have been way over my budget, but the weekend brunch seemed like the best option. The brunch included two or three courses and a drink. We went for the three course menu, since I wanted to try as many dishes as possible, and we use to switch dishes with my boyfriend. I had booked a table in advance as I wasn’t sure on how easy it would be to get a table on the same day. The decision to book a table wasn’t the best, as I got sick the day before and had a fever when we went there to eat. On the way there we were almost on our way to go back home, since I didn’t feel well, but as we didn’t reach the restaurant by phone, we decided to go there as we couldn’t back out the reservation.

As we arrived at the restaurant, which was closed until the brunch started, we had to wait together with lots of westerners for the doors to open. Not that many Chinese came to the brunch, which consisted mostly of European and Middle Eastern dishes. The brunch menu had a good range of starters, main courses and desserts to choose from. As a drink was included I chose I Bloody Mary that we couldn’t finish as it was so spicy. The brunch started off with a basket of bread. I was given the honor to choose all of our dishes, which meant that we had as a starter Salmon Gravlax with creamy dill potatoes and a sweet mustard sauce and a Blueberry Pancakes served with maple syrup and red berry compote. The dishes were just the perfect size, even though at first they might have looked small and simple. Our main a Steak Tartare - hand chopped best fillet of beef, with all the classic seasonings, crowned with an egg, was really small and didn’t look like anything. It was just a cup sized piece of grounded meet, with some fries on the side. The main I chose for myself was Danish Smørrebrød. The three pieces of bread included Rejemad - A tower of plump shrimps with mayonnaise & fresh dill, Æg & Kaviar - Soft boiled Eggs heaped with Lumpfish Roe and fresh dill and Roastbeef Med Peberrod Creme - Roast Beef and Horseradish Cream served with aspic, potato salad and crispy roasted onions. As I was sick I didn’t taste too much of the food and my boyfriend had to finish it all.  

The dessert was the highlight of the brunch. I ordered a pie to my boyfriend and chose the famous Pavlova. The merengue dessert was delicious and it would have been worth going there just for the sake of that dessert. We were also given two cans of tea and the cups that we drank from where so beautiful that I would have bought some if they weren’t priced at about forty euros each. I will at least go back for the Pavlova and maybe buy the cups, but since it is an expensive restaurant I’m sure I won’t be able to eat there again in a while.
