Lento kotiin business-luokassa

                             ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Buying ticket for my flight back was a hassle, but we managed to get a ticket a couple a months before from a Chinese sight. Buying the ticket was hard as western credit cards couldn’t be used so I had to one who ordered it for me in cash, which was really complicated. I ended up with a low priced ticket but still on Finnair with direct route and no stop over. My flight was on the 29th of July as my visa ended a couple of days later. Even though we arrived at the airport the exact moment when the check-in and baggage drop was opened, there were still a lot of people queuing before me. I was a bit afraid of the check-in, as we had some problems with the way Finnair had spelled my name on their site and I knew that my luggage were over-weight. Even though I had managed to buy another luggage and a voucher that made the extra bag free, I still had to leave behind a lot of stuff.

The women behind the desk asked if I knew that Finnair had weight limitations? Of course I did, I had to leave out some heavy stuff so that the bags would have been even a little bit closer to the limit of 23kg. As she told me I had to pay for the overweight bags I started reading a paper on the desk. I found out that the plane was overbooked, and if somebody volunteered and took another plane later on in the day would receive 300 euros and if there wasn’t a flight the volunteer would be seated on the same flight the next day and receive 600 euros. Of course I wanted the money and volunteered to give my seat to somebody else. When I told her that I could volunteer, so that I could go back and back my luggage again, another man appeared by the desk and told me that they would forget about the overweight charges. I left my luggage at the desk and I was given a coupon to go and get a coffee until they knew if I could make it with this flight, or if I should take another one. After enjoying my free tea and muffin I had some time to go through the shops of the airport.

After the check-in was closed I went back to desk with two other men that seemed to be volunteers as well. The guy who had given me the voucher for the free coffee announced that there were still seats left in the plane, and they would arrange so that I would be seated in business class. I got a bit stressed as we were given our tickets at the same time as the gates for boarding had been open. Luckily the plane was on the other side of the airport with less people, so the security checks and pass control went quickly. People were still queuing to get to the plane. I just passed them all and went to the business line with no people. I got some free newspapers and headed over to my seat. I was probably the one who stood out the most in business class as most people where middle aged business men, and I was dressed in a shirt that looked like something you sleep in, and that's exactly the reason I had it on for the flight!

The business class was arranged so that on the left side there was every other row two seats and every other one. The middle, where I sat had two seats and the right side had one seat. The seat had lots of space and was comfortable. I had a console on my right, on which I could put small things onto. Shoes could be placed into their own locker on the floor. The best thing with the seat was that you could choose between lots of different positions. The foot rest could be lifted up and the seat could be made all the way into a bed. The bed was great, and I actually slept for a couple of hours with a real pillow and a thick blanket. The screen in front of me had probably the same shows as the ones in the economy class, so I watched two movies that were rater good: Snowpiercer and Divergent. Just to add to the lux feeling of the flight, the back of the chair gave a nice massage if needed.

Airplane food is something lots of people complain about, but there isn’t anything to complain if you fly business.  We were given food and wine list from which to choose what we wanted for lunch and light meal before landing. A white table cloth was places on our foldable dinner table and we had real glass as well as metallic knife and forks. For starters I took a mushroom cream soup, which was served with green salad and bread. We could choose from three mains and I took the beef tenderloin, which was great. Ad dessert I chose all what they got so a cheese plate, ice cream, chocolate and small cakes. Drinks were served a lot and we were even given water bottles. We could even go and get snacks during the flight so I had some cookies and tea, but there were also finger sandwiches and chips etc. The flight was so incredible and there where so many nice things that I could just keep on writing about all the small details such as bag with a eyepad, socks and earplugs. Just luxurious!

M on the Bund

M's very famous Pavolova was delicious
The view over the river was great from the restaurants terrace
They also had this great view over the Bund from the terrace as well as from the window
If the weather would have been better, then we definitely would have sat outside

Halusin viimeisinä päivinä Shanghaissa käydä syömässä, jossain hienomassa ravintolassa. Valinta oli M on the Bund ja Mr and Mrs Bundin välillä. Molemmat ovat kalliita ravintoloita, jotka sijaitsevat Bundilla. Lopulta varasin pöydän M on the Bund –ravintolasta, sillä heillä oli parempi viikonloppu brunssi menu.

                             ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

I had in advance planned on going somewhere nice to eat during the last days of my stay in Shanghai. My decision on where to go came between M on the Bund and Mr & Mrs Bund. Both ones are good as well as have pricey menus and are located on the Bund. I ended up reserving a table at M on the Bund as they had a better brunch menu. Going to the restaurant for a lunch or dinner would have been way over my budget, but the weekend brunch seemed like the best option. The brunch included two or three courses and a drink. We went for the three course menu, since I wanted to try as many dishes as possible, and we use to switch dishes with my boyfriend. I had booked a table in advance as I wasn’t sure on how easy it would be to get a table on the same day. The decision to book a table wasn’t the best, as I got sick the day before and had a fever when we went there to eat. On the way there we were almost on our way to go back home, since I didn’t feel well, but as we didn’t reach the restaurant by phone, we decided to go there as we couldn’t back out the reservation.

As we arrived at the restaurant, which was closed until the brunch started, we had to wait together with lots of westerners for the doors to open. Not that many Chinese came to the brunch, which consisted mostly of European and Middle Eastern dishes. The brunch menu had a good range of starters, main courses and desserts to choose from. As a drink was included I chose I Bloody Mary that we couldn’t finish as it was so spicy. The brunch started off with a basket of bread. I was given the honor to choose all of our dishes, which meant that we had as a starter Salmon Gravlax with creamy dill potatoes and a sweet mustard sauce and a Blueberry Pancakes served with maple syrup and red berry compote. The dishes were just the perfect size, even though at first they might have looked small and simple. Our main a Steak Tartare - hand chopped best fillet of beef, with all the classic seasonings, crowned with an egg, was really small and didn’t look like anything. It was just a cup sized piece of grounded meet, with some fries on the side. The main I chose for myself was Danish Smørrebrød. The three pieces of bread included Rejemad - A tower of plump shrimps with mayonnaise & fresh dill, Æg & Kaviar - Soft boiled Eggs heaped with Lumpfish Roe and fresh dill and Roastbeef Med Peberrod Creme - Roast Beef and Horseradish Cream served with aspic, potato salad and crispy roasted onions. As I was sick I didn’t taste too much of the food and my boyfriend had to finish it all.

The dessert was the highlight of the brunch. I ordered a pie to my boyfriend and chose the famous Pavlova. The merengue dessert was delicious and it would have been worth going there just for the sake of that dessert. We were also given two cans of tea and the cups that we drank from where so beautiful that I would have bought some if they weren’t priced at about forty euros each. I will at least go back for the Pavlova and maybe buy the cups, but since it is an expensive restaurant I’m sure I won’t be able to eat there again in a while.

ERA - Shanghai Circus World

All pictures below from Era:s sight:  http://www.era-shanghai.com/era/en/photos/

 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

I had heard a lot about the performance by ERA at the Circus World. After a friend went and saw it she told me I had to see it too, so together with my boyfriend we went to see the show. Show is performed every night from half past seven until nine o'clock. We didn't book any tickets in advance so I was a bit nervous in case it would have been sold out. Thirty minutes before the show started we bought our tickets from the shop underneath the building. We got the cheapest one costing 200rmb, but there are also tickets in price classes 300, 400 and 600. The more you pay the better seats you get, but we could see just fine from our seats as well. We bought some caramel popcorn and got seated. No pictures were allowed to be taken, which means that only the pictures taken in during the half time and in the end were mine, and the rest are from the official site.

The show consisted of sixteen acts from which some were smaller and not that extraordinary, like juggling, hoop diving and spinning plates. But then there were some acts I never seen before. All in all I need to say that the show was extremely good and I have never seen anything like that. Most of the acts were accompanied by a band playing live either with traditional instruments or western ones. There was also a great opera singer, who sang really well, and made the atmosphere surreal. The show started of by a large mirror wall put up in a circle around the arena. The mirror turned into glass and a performance was made inside the mirror mirage. After this a large man appeared and threw big bowls into the air and caught them on the way down with his arm or head or feet. He also kicked them up in the air and caught them without breaking anything. The first half of the show ended with a wheel of life. Looking at them perform ten meters up in the air on a wheel spinning made my hand sweaty of fear. In the large wheel there were tree smaller ones, in which they did various acrobatic tricks. To add to this they stood outside the small wheels and for example started skipping rope or juggling with burning sticks.

There was a ten minute break after which the show continued. In the second part they did more acrobatic tricks in the air. In one act boy jumped ten meters up in the air and landed on a chair that was held up in air. In another act a women and a man just hanging from a strip of fabric did some tricks in the air and flew around the arena. It was a bit terrifying to watch since they didn't hold on to much and if their grip would slip they would fall right into the audience. The last performance was called the space motorcycle and inside a metallic doom, six or seven motorcycles drove inside. Every time one more was added into the doom I was amazed by how precious their driving was, so that they never drove into each other. They could switch directions many times and no accidents happened. I think it was worth seeing the show, since it incorporated lots of different visual effects from the acrobats to the light and lots of videos were projected onto screens.

Shanghai Zoo

Emergency Stuff: Firecrackers and some rope

A good picture showcasing what's in the enclosure
Trying to get rid of child in the bear cage..
Or just give your girlfriend a push..
Feeding animals wasn't allowed
Luckily the kangaroo was just resting and not dead

Shanghain eläintarha sijaitsee Hongqiao alueella, eli periaatteessa toisella puolella kaupunkia, kun lähdimme sinne Pudongin puolelta. Matkahan kesti yli tunnin ja huomasin jo matkalla, että olimme valinneet väärän päivän mennäkseen tutustumaan eläimiin, sillä viikonloppuisin perheet lähtevät puistoihin viettämään päivää. Eläintarha on siis todella iso puisto, jossa on nurmikoita, jonne ihmiset pystyttävät telttansa. Puolet alueesta on sitten eläimille varattu, ja monet eläimistä jäikin näkemättä, sillä alue on sen verran suuri. Aloitimme kierroksen linnuista.

                                                                 ☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

The Zoo of Shanghai is located in Hongqiao, which is over one hour away from the place I lived at in Pudong. We went there on the weekend, which in a way was a mistake as I knew families go to parks during their free time. The zoo is a kind of gigantic leisure park and maybe only half of the area has animals. People put up on tents on the area and just spent the day there. The park was actually so big that we missed some of the animals completely. We started off from the birds. From there we passed a lake with birds roaming around freely. It was a bit scary to be able to go so near a large pelican. The lake had swans and other large birds. From there we saw some small and medium sized mammals. Some had poor spaces to live in as others had pretty nice and green enclosures. We saw the normal tigers and lions, but getting near the panda was impossible as so many people wanted to catch a glimpse of the national creature. The pandas didn’t do much so we moved on to the herbivores. We passed the monkey house, but there were too many people wanting to see gorillas and it was a bit disturbing watching them trying to get the animals attention by hitting the glass and so on. People also ignored the signs and fed the animals. I was also amused to see how near the cages people held their children. One push and the next moment somebody’s child is together with a bear in a small enclosure. The park was anyways worth a visit and next time I will go on a day when there aren’t too many people.

Juna-matkat

Hongqiao train station in Shanghai was one of the better ones I visited
The seats of the lower level bullet train taken home from Hangzhou

Entering our train in Beijing

The first regular train I had entered on our way to Anging
Love the view from Luoyang to Xian
It's good to know which train station to go to, as many cities have lots of them

Matkustimme suurimman ajan junalla reissatessamme ympäri kiinassa.

As we did our trip around China we used trains a lot. I had travelled with train tree times before, when I went to Suzhou, Hangzhou and Beijing. To these places I took the bullet train, which meant that the trip only took thirty minutes, one hour and a bit over five hours to each place. I really enjoy travelling with the bullet train since it is clean, spacious and the toilets are nice. The staff is well dressed and announcements are made in English as well as Chinese. The bullet train is more expensive compared to regular ones, but they are so fast that the money can well be spent on comfort and the time saved. We also used a bullet train when we travelled between Luoyang and Xian as well as between Chengdu and Chongqing. The seat are all turned the right way and every row has two seats on one side and three on the other side. There a lot of space and I have even had my backpack by my seat, and not up on the luggage rack. The back of the seat can be changed and this means that at least I can sleep really well when the ride is so smooth.

Therefore nothing prepared me for the ride in a regular train. One word to describe it is horrible. The regular train waiting halls are hot and dirty, and there are so many people waiting for the same train or another. When the gates are opened and people can go the train platform, most people run, because they want to get their stuff up on the luggage rack, because if you don’t fit your stuff up there, then you have to have it in your limited space under your seat. Seats vary from hard seat to soft one and beds are also categorized into hard and soft. We only tried the hard seats, which are 2x2 or 3x3 seats with a table in the middle. The seats only have one position, but I still managed to sleep on two benches during the tree train trips we took in these horrible regular trains. Some people buy tickets, which doesn’t include a seat if the train is full. This means that they have to stand the whole way if they aren’t lucky enough to find an empty seat. I actually travelled like this from Suzhou back to Shanghai. Luckily the trip was only thirty minutes in the bullet train which is pretty spacious.

All the trains we used had a restaurant, but we never visited it. Instead we bought some rice from a cart. We wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t the only possibility to have food on an eighteen hour trip. The food was good and we also bought some fruit from a snack cart, since we couldn’t survive on only snacks and water. As I said I really liked the toilets of the bullet trains since they are really big compared to the ones in the slow train. It’s just a hole in the floor and guess if it’s hard to squat when the train is making so many turns? I really tried to avoid the toilets as much as possible, since nobody cleaned them and there were about hundred persons in one cart with one toilet to share.

I always bought my train tickets in advance in some ticket shop or travelling agency. I didn’t want to go and queue at the station with lots of people and anyways some trains are so full that we couldn’t get any tickets to them. We have changed tickets a couple of times. This means that we wanted to get on a train leaving earlier and it worked every time without having to pay any extra. Ticket prices vary depending on which train you want to take, the slow or fast one, there at least four different kinds of trains. Also the seats and beds are priced differently depending on if they are hard or soft. Bullet trains are sometimes five times more expensive than regular ones, but in the future I prefer paying a bit extra just to get one the bullet train. Hopefully China will just continue building these tracks between some of the bigger main cities in the city!

Chengdu Panda Sanctuary

During our road trip around China we visited a Panda Park in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan. This is the area where pandas naturally live. This was also the last major sight we had planned to visit, as the rest of the trip we just walked around Chengdu and in Chongqing we didn’t leave the hotel much, as it was so hot outside. Finding the park wasn’t easy, as we couldn’t find the bus going there as the bus station wasn’t written on the bus stop. We arrived later than I had hoped for, at around nine o’clock. Pandas are only active during a couple of hours in the morning when it is feeding time. The rest of the time the panda will be chewing bamboo or sleeping. Even though we arrived late we still managed to see some action. Three or four pandas tried together push down a fifth one from the tree platform they were playing at.  All of them ended up falling down and vanishing into the forest in the end.  In other words pandas seem to be playful creatures when they don’t sleep or eat.

We also caught a glimpse of a baby panda, even though they should be born in autumn, not summer. The park was huge and we walked long distances to see pandas in different enclosures. Most of the pandas were inside as they don’t like the hot weather, and outside was over thirty degrees in the sun. We walked to lots of enclosures and not seeing any pandas, so I was a bit disappointed with the park. We also passed some red pandas and ate ice cream next to a swan lake before returning to the city center.
