Työpaikkaruokaa

Dish from Family Mart that I have eaten once almost every week at work

A normal set of food in the canteen

Some food I ordered together with other colleges

Rice mixed with vegetables is quite good

Cucumber with egg, noodles, seaweed soup and rice costs 7rmb

One of the places to eat at in the company

Sometimes the skyscrapers in Lujiazui can be seen from the the dining room

The food in the canteen at work is something most of the Chinese don’t like. I, however, find it quite ok. I usually go to the canteen some two times a week. If I don’t get there exactly at 12 o’clock when the break starts, there might not be many dishes left. The building complex has so many companies, that when I get down from the seventh floor, there might already be a queue of 100 people in front of me. When I’m lucky, there is nobody queuing.

There are always 3-4 meat dishes ranging from fish to chicken and beef. I avoid these, as they look too suspicious and opt for two of the eight vegetable dishes instead. If there is any rice mixed with meat or vegetables, I will choose it, but otherwise I ate plain rice. I also take a bowl of soup and the flavors differ somewhat. Overall the food doesn’t change a lot, so that is why I don’t go there every day.

Instead I go twice every week to Family Mart and buy some dishes before going to work. The dishes in Family Mart cost double the price of what I pay in the canteen and I have eaten their chicken and curry dishes way too often now.  Sometimes I order together with colleges food, but it isn’t that good, so I stick to Family Mart or the canteen.

Jiangnan kampus rekrytointi

Campus map from the university web site
The campus was built next to a lake

I really liked the plates in the restaurant at campus
This restaurant was nothing like the ones I had in Shanghai back when I studied at university

Parisen viikkoa sitten HR pomo kyseli olisinko kiinnostunut menemään kampus rekrytointi tapahtumaan.

Saavuttuamme kampukselle, menimme suoraan syömään vaihto-oppilaiden ruokalaan.

Videon loputtua, HR pomo lyhyesti kertoi työpaikasta ja mitä he työharjoittelijoina oppisivat.

Kokeen palauttamisen yhteydessä, he antoivat CVnsä ja muita papereita, joista olisi rekrytoinnin kannalta hyötyä, kuten arvosanoja. Siivottuamme kaikki kamat kasaan, ajoimme kampuksen ravintolaan syömään illallista.

Kotona olin sitten vasta puoli kymmenen aikaan.

Some weeks ago my HR boss asked if I would be interested in going to a campus recruitment event. I said no, but he just laughed and told me I had to come. Last Saturday we went to a university in Wuxi. You might wonder why on Saturday, but in China holidays are worked in on the weekends to compensate for the work time lost. I got to work at ten o’clock and together with the HR boss and his assistant we drove to Wuxi. The trip took some two hours and we made one break on the way.

When we arrived at the campus, we had lunch in the exchange student canteen. There were lots of Chinese dishes to choose from and the company paid for the meal. The campus was huge and they had their own bank and other shops that made it feel like a small town. There were at least 70 buildings, which isn’t weird as they had 30000 students!

The university has 17 schools and offers 48 undergraduate programs with 10 disciplines including engineering, science, literature, economics, management, law, medicine, agriculture, education and arts. We were here to recruit just technology engineers. We met with some teachers, walked around campus for a short while and then had a presentation for some 66 students that showed up. I presented myself and the English training program.

After the presentation, the students had one hour to answer an exam. The first part was logical thinking and the second part coding. The test was in English. When the finished they also handed in their CV and some additional material such as grades and if they had some recommendation letters. We ended at about half past four, and then we went to eat dinner.

The restaurant we went to was really nice and the food was great. We had some unusual tofu, salty noodles, sweet rice soup and some bread with meat. After we finished dinner we drove back to Shanghai which took about two hours again. The HR girl was dropped off on the way and I was driven to the bus station nearby the company. Luckily, the bus was behind us when I got off the car. I was home at half past nine, so quite late.

Häät Shanghaissa

The entrance to the couples home
Pictures taken for the wedding
The pictures were displayed everywhere in the house
Some snacks served at the grooms house
The car taking the couple from one place to another
The stage in the wedding reception
The couple entering the stage

Change of dress and throwing the bouquet to a selected group of people
We had already stopped eating when more food was brought to the table

Lopulta saavuimme sulhasen kodille, jossa morsian itse asiassa on asunut parisen vuotta.

CCs sister got married during the Golden Week. A day before the wedding we picked up some of CCs friends that came out of town. Together with them we went to the rehearsal dinner, where we just ate together with some of the guests, but there was no program. After dinner we took them back to their hotel, where we spent the evening in the bride’s room playing cards and mahjong.

The next day we got up at about eight and had breakfast together. CC was quite busy as he had to arrange a lot of things in the morning. At nine I went to the bride’s room where she was getting ready. After a while the room was full of friends and relatives. It is a Chinese tradition for the groom to come and pick up the bride in the morning. I, the bride, and some of her friends locked us inside the bedroom. The groom should bribe the girls to open the door. Unfortunately, he didn’t need to bribe too much as they got the door open.

The bride and groom took part in a ceremony where they handed some tea to the bride’s parents and the parents handed them some red envelops with money. After this, CC carried the sister on his back, out from the hotel. Six expensive cars were waiting outside, and I was seated in the third one. Those that were not as close to the couple, had to take themselves to the wedding reception. The cars drove around the small center until they reached the home of the groom.

The sister has been living with the groom’s family for some years already. Inside their new home, the ceremony of handing tea and envelops was repeated with the groom’s parents. After this we went to the groom’s parents’ home and ate some sweets. The groom’s mother handed out red envelops to the guests and I got one with 100rmb.

After this we took the cars back to the reception. There we had some dumplings for lunch before we drove off to a park to take pictures. Weirdly enough non of the parents took part in the pictures. The park had at least two other groups of people from weddings. After the pictures we drove back and played mahjong for a couple of hours with some of the guests.

The dinner started at five and some two hundred guests attended the ceremony. Lots of food was served and there was some entertainment while we were eating. The couple exchanged the rings, threw the bouquet, cut the cake and did some other western things. An aunt of CC sang and the sister as well preformed with some singing and acting. There was a speaker all the time talking and asking questions.

We were sitting with CCs friends in a separate table from the couple and the rest of the family. The couple went on a round and toasted with each table. Before the dinner ended I went together with CC and toasted with some relatives. In the end most people, like me, went home, as other continued to go to a KTV bar.

I bought a Qipao from the wedding market in Suzhou. We found a store with a sing that Qiapos cost only 35rmb, so we went inside to have a look. I liked one of the blue Qiapos, but they didn’t have it in my size, so I was given the same one in red. Traditionally, you should wear red to a Chinese wedding, so CC and his sister thought I should buy it, even though I had already bought a black dress. The Qipao was of good quality, with soft lace and some glitter, and cost 150rmb.

Häämarkkinat

One of the smaller wedding dress shops
Red is the color in Chinese weddings, even though they are getting more westernized
More costume than something I would wear to a wedding
A cheaper dress store
A shop for Chinese women's taste

This was one of the side streets with wedding shops

Suzhoussa, Tiger Hillin vieressä on isot häämarkkinat.

In Suzhou, next to Tiger Hill, there is a large wedding market. I had been to the Tiger Hill pagoda some years ago, but at that time I had not noticed all the stores selling wedding related stuff. There were more than hundred stores selling dresses and accessories, and if I would have been seriously looking for something, I would have needed more than just a couple of hours. Some shops sold high-end looking dresses, as others looked quite cheap. The good ones cost something like 2000-3000rmb and the cheaper ones you could get for just some 100-200 rmb. I didn’t check the prices of the wedding dresses, but I’m sure there will be some in any price category.

I had imagined that there would only be dresses for the Chinese consumers taste, but I was surprised that there were many things that I liked. Especially all the hair decorations were something that I would have bought a lot of, if I would have prepared better for the trip. Some of the shops were more mall like, and other were located on small side streets. You could even find costumes for Halloween, as everything you could imagine was on sale here. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures in any of the high-end shops, as they were quite beautiful.

During out time in Suzhou, we took a stroll on the Pingjiang street. It is next to a river, so tourists could hire a boat. Lots of shops were lined along the road, but we didn’t buy anything. The road was at points too crowded, but this how it is when you go to a tourist destination in the middle of the national holiday.

In Suzhou we witnessed a traditional wedding. The couple was standing in the boat and some priests and musicians walked along the road beside the river. They were all wearing red, which is the traditional color for a wedding.
